Clare is thought to be one of the county's worst affected by the disease which has already impacted over 16,000 hectares of forestry nationwide. Currently, Clare County Council will offer advice to those who have roadside trees at risk of falling, but the responsibility lies with the landowner to ensure they do not present a danger to the public. Whitegate Fine Gael Councillor Pat Burke says a common sense approach is urgently needed.

This week Tipp FM looked at ash dieback in the country and what we can do to reduce it's impact Did you know… Ash dieback is a serious disease of ash trees caused by the invasive fungal pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus The pathogen originates in Asia and was brought to Europe in the early 90s. Ash dieback was first detected in the Republic of Ireland in October 2012 on plants imported from continental Europe. The disease is now prevalent throughout most of the island of Ireland and is likely to cause the death of the majority of the ash trees over the next two decades.

Fishing is a very popular pastime. In England alone, the Environment Agency issued more than 900,000 fishing licenses between March 2022 and April 2023. But illegal fishing on rivers and watercourses is on the up, according to the police, who are stepping up patrols with other agencies. Angling clubs pay thousands of pounds every year to stock rivers with fish for members and taking fish without permission is theft. Better training of police in poaching laws has, however, led to a recent spate of convictions and a legal first for volunteer river bailiffs.A new housing development in Essex is welcoming some new arrivals, but they're not excited home-owners. That's because houses on the estate at Manningtree come complete with their own flock of sheep and a full-time shepherdess. We're talking about trees all this week and today it's the threat to our trees from pests, pathogens and disease. Climate change, pollution, land use change and invasive species are all making trees more vulnerable to pests and diseases, like ash dieback. It was first detected in the UK back in 2012, since then it's swept across the country with devastating effect on our third most common broad-leaved tree. According to the Woodland Trust, ash dieback will eventually kill up to 80% of ash trees across the UK. Dead trees are dangerous trees, so local authorities are spending millions of pounds managing trees that are deemed unsafe. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

The ash tree plays a huge role in Europe's culture and ecology. From Yggdrasill, the giant ash world tree of Norse Mythology to the Guardian trees of Ireland; the ash tree has been a central part of European folklore and mythology. It can be a prolific natural regenerator making it an excellent species for timber and its flexible, white wood is still in high demand today and is used in the manufacture of Morgan cars, Irish hurling sticks and numerous items of furniture and carpentry. However, the European ash tree is now facing the most significant modern threat to its survival. Ash Dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) was common in China and Asia (where native ash species have obtained tolerance over time). In a globalised world, where timber and plant material are constantly being transported; this has sped up the spread of infectious tree diseases and pests. Ash dieback has ripped through Europe and was identified in the UK in 2012. Many UK  ash woodlands have since been decimated by this disease which resulted in some very gloomy headlines:https://news.exeter.gov.uk/diseased-trees-to-come-down-amid-safety-concerns/https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/16/ash-tree-dieback-uk-woodlandsIt is unequivocally a monumental threat to our woodlands and will have major impacts for our ash trees and the species that associate with them.In this podcast, we take a closer look at ash and the effects of Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. We discuss the threat without hyperbole of some headlines and look at the ecology of ash and what will happen to our woodlands as we lose large numbers of these trees to disease. We also offer signs of hope, the living ash project from the Future Trees trust is working with nature to speed up the ash trees ability to fight back. While there's no doubt that ash dieback is a major economic and ecological threat and will dramatically change the nature of our woodlands; we try to take the longer view and understand the likelihood of the ash species to become tolerant over time and take a more nuanced look at the ecology. There is no 'good' or 'bad' only change. The more we can understand the science and the effects of tree diseases, the better placed we will be to manage the threats and identify strategies to resist threats or adapt our ecosystems to a rapidly changing future. This podcast was co-hosted by Dr Cecilia Dahlsjo who is studying the effects of ash dieback through her work at Oxford University and Dr. Jo Clark who is the head of research for the Future Trees Trust. They run the Living Ash Project which is leading the way in the UK in developing ash dieback tolerant species to help nature rebound from this new threat.

An ad campaign from Swedish oatmilk firm Oatly has prompted more than 100 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The campaign which is aimed at teenagers encourages them to 'talk to dad' about the reasons why they should stop drinking dairy milk. The ASA says complaints cover a range of issues including concerns about sexism, ageism, causing fear and being offensive to dairy farmers. What really seems to have annoyed the farming community is Oatly’s use of this statistic: ‘The dairy and meat industries emit more Co2 than all the world’s planes, trains, cars, boats etc combined.’ We bring the NFU together with Oatly to discuss the statistics used. A £5m project is underway in the Peak District aiming to increase the number and variety of trees as the area continues to be badly affected by Ash Dieback.
