Diane Rehm: On My Mind
A conversation with folk legend Joan Baez

Diane Rehm: On My Mind

For years, legendary folk singer Joan Baez wrote poems and tucked them away in notebooks and on scraps of paper. She started this decades ago, around the time memories surfaced of childhood abuse at the hands of her father. Baez says poetry was a way to explore the reasons behind her lifelong phobias, insomnia and panic attacks – and to come to terms with a diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder, which for her meant she lived with several other voices in her head. Now 83, Baez has taken these musings about her life, her trauma, and her passions for nature and art, and is sharing them with the world. “When You See My Mother, Ask Her to Dance” reads like a diary in verse, and offers deep insight into the experiences and creativity of one of our nation's most beloved folk musicians.Diane spoke to Joan Baez on Zoom in front of a live audience as part of The Diane Rehm `Book Club in August of this year. They talked about the book, as well as the recent documentary about Baez's life, “Joan Baez: I Am a Noise.”Find out more about The Diane Rehm Book Club here: dianerehm.org/bookclub

She is known as the voice of a generation. The Queen of Folk. A legend. An icon, the one who sang “We Shall Overcome” alongside Martin Luther King Jr. at the 1963 March on Washington. As much as anyone, Joan Baez embodied the spirit of that decade of soaring dreams and songs and dramas set in motion that echo through this world of ours. Meanwhile, her love affair with a young Minnesota singer-songwriter calling himself Bob Dylan, whose career she pivotally helped launch, is also reentering the public imagination with a big new movie. And her classic heartbreak hit about him, “Diamonds and Rust,” is topping global charts anew. But Joan Baez at 83 is so much more intriguing than her projection as a legend. She grew up the daughter of a Mexican physicist father and a Scottish mother in a seemingly idyllic family. But even at the height of her fame, she was struggling mightily with mysterious interior demons. She and her beloved sisters finally reckoned in midlife with a truth of abuse they had buried, even in memory, at great cost. She has reckoned with fracture inside herself and been on an odyssey of wholeness. She is frank and funny, irreverent and wise. Among other gifts, she offers a refreshing way in to what it means to sing and live the reality of “overcoming,” personal and civilizational.Krista spoke with Joan on stage at the 2024 Chicago Humanities Festival.Joan Baez published her first (wonderful) book of poetry at the age of 83: When You See My Mother, Ask Her to Dance. She was one of the leading artists of the 1960s folk revival, and brought her voice to the Civil Rights and anti-war movements of that decade. She performed for over 60 years, releasing more than 30 albums. She has won scores of awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. In addition to her poetry, she has published a book of drawings, Am I Pretty When I Fly?: An Album of Upside Down Drawings, and painted a series of portraits called Mischief Makers. You can find the links for her books here.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.______Sign up for The Pause — a monthly Saturday morning companion to all things On Being, with heads-up on new episodes, special offerings, event invitations, recommendations, and reflections from Krista all year round.

Hey Mama,  I know when I was dealing with littles and had minimal help at home, I was so overwhelmed and just needed a break!  If you are shopping for a mom that is in this stage of overwhelmed and covered in children, here are some practical gifting ideas for her! What will be most helpful? Does this mama know where she could use a helper the most? ASK HER!!!! If she can't think of anywhere, and it seems obvious to you, suggest it and be compassionately persistent, but give her a few options. Remember, this is a mama that is likely sleep deprived, and needs a break. The last thing she needs is someone adding more stress to her life!  Maybe having someone clean her house is overwhelming, but someone cleaning her car makes her so excited she cries! Maybe she just wants a pretty yard, and doesn't have time/energy to put into making it pretty.  Maybe she just needs the kids to be away for a few hours so she can shower alone! Maybe you know someone that can take the kids and you can invite her bestie over to hang out.  Think about what she really needs. Maybe it's just the kitchen prep. Maybe she needs her pantry organized . Maybe she needs meal planning help. Maybe she just needs a "mommy's helper" (an older child that comes to help with tasks or kids) for an hour or so. Like that 4-5(or7) o'clock time when the kids are just cranky!  Where can you be the biggest blessing to this mama?  XOXO Jenn   WEBSITE: www.JMOrganizingSpaces.com EMAIL: OrganizedFabulousPodcast@gmail.com HOTLINE: call/text +1 (980)389-0399 FB Group: How to Declutter, Organize, Style, and Design for Overwhelmed Moms

Today we have someone I have known for two years, Mrs. Kerry Cundal. Kerry and I met each other in Slave Lake during her Leadership Bid for the Alberta Liberals. We sit down and talk about her duty to serve, the 2015 federal election, her running for the Alberta Liberal Party. Along with that we talk about an issue close to her heart. Kerry co-founded the non-profit organization “Ask Her”. Ask Her was formed around getting more women involved in politics during the 2017 Calgary Municipal Election. So sit back and relax and enjoy Cross Border Interviews Ft. Kerry Cundal.

We pay our doctor very well by the day and not by production. So since she is getting paid, is it OK to ask her to do other tasks when she has openings? For example, should the doctor get on the phone to call patients? What may we ask her to do and what should we stay away from? Listen to how Dr. Richard Madow and Dr. David Madow answer this one. Then of course we do the call of the week. We call a dental office that is offering a “free dinner” on their website as a marketing technique for getting new patients. Easy, right? Well, not necessarily. Let’s listen in to see how this one was handled! If you have a question that you would like answered on our podcast, please send it in to podcast@madow.com. We will do our best to get yours answered!     The Doctor Gets Paid by the Day – Is it Fair to Ask Her to do THIS During Downtime?     Female Speaker 1: The Dental Practice Fixers Podcast is brought to you by The Madow Center for Dental Practice Success. To find out how we can help increase the success of your practice, checkout madow.com or call us at 1-800-258-0060. [Music] Dr. Dave Madow: An associate dentist is guaranteed a certain amount of money per day, whether he or she is busy or not. It can leave us some calls which we're going to talk about right now. This is The Dental Practice Fixers Episode 10. I am Dr. David Madow along with.  Dr. Rich Madow: Dr. Richard Madow, great to be here, everyone.  Dr. Dave Madow: Yeah, it's great to be back. We really appreciate you and we are the fixers as we say. Let's get right in to a great question we received and we're going to go and answer this as best as we can as we always do on these episodes.   Dr. Rich Madow: This question actually turns out to be multifaceted and even though it's maybe single-faceted when you hear it. I've got it on my phone here. So okay, well, here's the question and that is, hey guys, we recently hired an associate with a guarantee of $600 per day. But sometimes the schedule falls apart. Question, what can we have the associate dentist do to help out the office? Do you think it is weird to ask her to make phone calls and book her patients since our front office is short-staffed? So, that's a great question as it is and then it also leads to other questions like should you be paying a guarantee per day to an associate dentist? So, let's talk about all these issues. What do you think? Where do you want to start?Dr. Dave Madow: Maybe we should start with why that arrangement in the first place? I think that arrangement in itself can lead to a lot of problems but she sounds like it's leading to problems already. I mean, so this dentist signed an agreement and he or she is-  Dr. Rich Madow: She.  Dr. Dave Madow: She, okay, it's a she, she's making [crosstalk] $600 per day. Whether she's busy or not, she's guaranteed that amount of money. I mean, why would you want to have an agreement like that? Why wouldn't you want to have the dentist responsible for his or her production and working hard and knowing the more you, the more you work, the more cases you do, the more you're going to make. You know, you're investing in the craft.  Dr. Rich Madow: Well, I'll tell you exactly what. I think remember back to our day, I don't [inaudible 02:22] also [crosstalk]. Dr. Dave Madow: A long time ago.  Dr. Rich Madow: I graduated dental school 84, you graduated in 80. Then we both did our residencies. And then we both... we were looking for associateships before we had our own practices. It was a different time, I think we didn't have huge student debt, we didn't have corporate dentistry. In these days, just think of a student graduating, they've got a lot of debt and they're being made an offer by a corporate dental practice. Well, that's, you know, those practices are all guaranteeing a per day guarantee. So I think all corporate practices are doing [crosstalk].  Dr. Dave Madow: I can't speak for every [crosstalk] it's very typical.

After a long hiatus, the original co-host of DMP is back! Mike Sklens returns to the show to present one of his favorite bands: The Hold Steady. These guys not only rock hard but also flood your ears with quick-fire lyrics that are mysterious and often funny. Lead singer/guitarist Craig Finn has a very strange vocal method, but it becomes more familiar and more mature as the band's material evolves through time -- so stick with it! After just a few songs, it's easy to hear why Mike loves the band, and you will probably start to grow on The Hold Steady as well. Here's the setlist: 1. Most People are DJs (Almost Killed Me) 2. You Gotta Dance (Almost Killed Me) 3. Ask Her for Adderall (A Positive Rage -- Bonus Track) 4. Your Little Hoodrat Friend (A Positive Rage) 5. How a Ressurection Really Feels (Separation Sunday) 6. Same Kooks (Boys and Girls in America) 7. Party Pit (Boys and Girls in America) 8. One for the Cutters (Stay Positive) 9. Slapped Actress (Stay Positive) 10. The Weekenders (Heaven is Whenever) 11.
