I'm delighted to speak with Dr Phil Kearney in this week's episode. Phil is one of the world's leading skill acquisition specialists. He is Interim Course Director of the Masters and Applied Sports Coaching course at the University of Limerick. Phil completed his PhD at the University of Limerick, exploring the application of skill acquisition principles to children's learning of fundamental movement skills. He subsequently taught at the University of Chichester, England, where he was programme coordinator for the BSc Sport Science and Coaching, before returning to Ireland. A Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, Phil is passionate about skill acquisition, and inspiring the next generation of sport scientists and coaches to apply the core principles of skill acquisition in the development of athletes. Phil is also co-founder of Movement and Skill Acquisition Ireland. Phil and I speak about what skill is and how it can be developed through session design and coach behaviour.
Simone Kearney is a Dublin-born, Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist and writer. She is interested in tracking the daily embodied experience of emotional and intellectual life, which she traces through repetition and variation, metaphor and materiality. Her practice is an inquiry — as much visual as it is psychological — into how experience is a cobbled, fragile thing, shapeshifting, subject to time, configured and reconfigured through our bodies. In recent projects, she has been working with hand-carved stone sculpture, watercolor, and text, to reflect states of self and collective consciousness, where the work starts to gather like archaeological fragments of the psyche. Kearney currently has a solo show of sculptures and works on paper entitled DIGS at Guest Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, on view from September 20th – November 8th. She also will have sculptures in a group exhibition at Koki Arts in Tokyo, Japan, this October. Some previous solo exhibitions include Putty's Coronation, Brooklyn, NY; Undercurrent Gallery, Brooklyn New York; Artshack Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; and Annex Gallery, Lighthouse Works, Fisher's Island, NY. She is a NYFA grant recipient and is the author of Dim, Dahlia, Violet, Stone, (ITI Press, 2024), DAYS, (Belladonna Press, 2021), and My Ida (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2017). She teaches at Parsons School for Design and Rutgers University.
Melissa Kearney is the author of The Two-Parent Privilege: How Americans Stopped Getting Married and Started Falling Behind. Her book confronts the politically controversial fact that children raised in two-parent homes have better personal and professional outcomes (ON AVERAGE) than those raised in single-parent homes. Specifically, two-parent homes produce children who are more likely to graduate from high school and college, more likely to stay out of jail, to achieve stable employment, high earnings, and eventually to get married themselves, thus replicating the same advantages they had for their children. For pointing this out, Kearney was excoriated by academic colleagues who accused her of having a right-wing political agenda, which is preposterous considering that she had spent the 20 years prior to writing her book researching social policy, poverty, and inequality. Melissa is the Gilbert F. Schaefer Professor of Economics at the Unversity of NotreDame. She holds a BA in Economics from Princeton and a PhD in Economics from MIT. This is an encore episode from 2023. Follow Paul and read his work here. Learn more about Melissa Kearney here.

There's more h@te crimes legislation coming this week and Justice Minister Sean Fraser has promised that the Online Harms Act will be back this fall. How will Pierre Poilievere and the Conservative Official Opposition react to these bills? Is Canada on the brink of losing its foundational freedoms? In this episode of Stand on Guard, I tackle the latest political catastrophe threatening free speech in our country. The Kearney government's push for expanded hate crime laws and censorship is a direct attack on your rights. Who defines "hate"? How far will this government go to silence voices of dissent? From banning symbols to criminalizing thoughts, these new laws are nothing but a smokescreen for censorship. Meanwhile, farmers are under siege, and our economy is in tatters. This isn't just politics as usual—it's a systematic effort to control and divide Canadians. We must resist.Join me as I break down the lies, the overreach, and the dangerous trajectory our nation is heading towards. Independent journalism is crucial now more than ever.
