There are two distinct parts to this episode: first, more revelations about an early aviation legend. Then, we visit Ada (Sis) Mcrae, born 1889, who recalls the hardships and joys of life in a small Outback town.SIR NORMAN BREALEY really made the dust fly with his biplane-era airline in Western Australia, but the maverick way he ran his business also raised the ire of our early aviation authorities. In this final instalment on Sir Norman, we hear of more of his brazen business antics.SIS McRAE in Hawker, South Australia, was the big-bodied, big-hearted grandmother of Australian Country Music legends Peter Coad and the Coad Sisters. In this 1967 interview with Sis, she shared with me some of her swag-full of yarns about small-town life over a century ago.  And through the Coads' song, 'Sing Me That Old Song, Granny', we hear the ancient violin Sis would play all night at country dances in the Flinders Ranges.

Really Interesting Women - the Podcast Episode 123AMBER LAWRENCEAmber started her professional career as a Chartered Accountant but she left that to pursue a dream. After a very successful debut in the 2005 Tamworth Country Music Festival  - coming second in the major singing competition to Jessica Mauboy - Amber took that success and started her country music journey in earnest. She put in a lot of hard work and was constantly touring. It paid off as she became one of Australia's leading female country singers. But that's not just my opinion. She's won 6 Golden Guitars, including Female Artist of the Year at the 2023 Golden Guitar Awards. On the way to that success she has toured the world, entertained Australian troops overseas and even went to New York to play a song she wrote to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea - in front of the President of the United States and the Australian PM (and 800 others). In July 2022, she released her tenth studio album, Living for the Highlights, which reached number 1 on the ARIA charts and the Australian Country Music charts. Head to Amber's website for info on her touring dates and a link to her albums.www.amberlawrence.com.auHead to the link in my bio to have a listen to our conversation. Visit instagram @reallyinterestingwomen for further interviews and posts of interesting women in history. Heart of Indie's co host, Emme had a blast chatting with Pepper of Australia's own country rock band 'Hurricane Fall' don't miss out on the fun! Hurricane Fall - the fittest band in Australian Country Music (call them on it and you’ll be challenged to a “lift off”) - are back with a new single, on a new label with the modern country sound that is set to turn heads with a neck-snapping velocity in 2021. The success of their previous single ‘Aftertaste’ has seen them gaining national airplay across the country on stations including Triple M Country, Kix Country and Today’s Country 94.1. The single was also added to Spotify’s “Fresh Country” playlist, racking up over 120,000 streams. They have gathered their first Golden Guitar nomination and a new record deal, ensuring that this year is shaping up as a big one for the boys. Released today on Compass Bros via Universal Music, ‘Lost in Us’ was written by master hook writers Mitch Thompson and Tom Jordan (Seaforth) as well as Lachlan Mitchell and Phil Barton. The band says of the song: “Lost in us is about falling deeply in love with that special someone. Being so caught up in the moment – so in love - that all the other times you thought you were in love, were nothing, compared to the love you have now.” The genesis of ‘Lost in Us’ proved to be very challenging for the band. The song was produced in Melbourne by Michael Paynter and Michael Delorenzis at MSquared Studios, while the band were recording at home in Newcastle, NSW. The band says: “Having a Melbourne based producer presented a huge challenge as the song was completed during the COVID pandemic - right when Melbourne was forced into the harshest lockdown anywhere in the world. We recorded parts and sent them to the guys to keep things moving. The vocals were recorded in [Pepper] Deroy’s son’s bedroom – over Zoom. It truly was a monumental technological feat to bring the song to life!” Hurricane Fall have had a very colourful history for such a young band. They were given an exclusive televised gig to play a private show for Sophie Monk during her star turn on The Bachelorette. They have supported Billy Ray Cyrus on his 2018 Australian Tour, as well as playing alongside The Wolfe Brothers, Kasey Chambers, O’Shea and many more. They are regulars at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, New Zealand’s Top Paddock Music Festival, Deni Ute Muster, and they have plenty more gigs lined up for 2021. Oh, and singer Pepper Deroy has fully recovered from his injuries in that 2019 Air Canada turbulence episode! Hurricane Fall were nominated for their very first Golden Guitar this year in the category of “Group/Duo of the Year.” Fronted by two extraordinary lead singers - Jesse Vee and Pepper Deroy - Hurricane Fall are one of Australian country’s hardest working live bands.
