It's been five years since Disney remade its animated classic The Lion King as a photorealistic blockbuster. This leads us to Mufasa: The Lion King, a new prequel telling the story of Mufasa's rise — as well as the origins of his rivalry with Scar. The film was directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) and features new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda. We're here to stuff your stocking (and stock your stuffing) with a lengthy, mid-week episode of Breakfast All Day. First, we review "Mufasa: The Lion King," a live-action prequel that traces the origin of the leader of the Pride Lands. Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins ("Moonlight") directs, and while we're looking all over for his artistic stamp, we're sadly not finding it. In theaters this weekend. Then, our great friend Tim Grierson helps out with an early review of "A Complete Unknown," James Mangold's Bob Dylan biopic. Timothée Chalamet is tremendous as the iconic folk singer, and he'll surely be in the conversation for the best-actor Oscar. In theaters Christmas Day. And speaking of the holiday, we wanted to share the audio from our annual Christmas Movie Livestream with the expert himself. This is always a great time, and Alonso loves answering your questions and hearing your thoughts about his favorite topic. Thanks to all the lovely folks who joined us live. Keep an eye (and an ear) out as we wrap up the year in the upcoming days. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us during this busy season!
Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) takes on the task of adapting Colson Whitehead's sprawling epic, Underground Railroad. Underground Railroad is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel centered around two slaves by the name of Cora and Ceasar. Although Underground Railroad was released all at once on Amazon Prime, we are doing two episodes at a time. We begin with the first two episodes entitled "Georgia" and "South Carolina". --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-kids-wear-crowns/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-kids-wear-crowns/support

Adapted from an unpublished play by Tarell Alvin McCraney, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight was a mesmerising three-part journey through the young adult life of Chiron, a boy grappling with his identity and sexuality, played by three different actors representing different stages of his adolescence. The movie was the first LGBTQ-themed film to win Best Picture, the first with an all-black cast to win Best Picture, and is regularly voted among the greatest films of the century so far.Barry wrote Moonlight’s first-draft on a solo trip to Europe, after discovering echoes of his own life in Tarell’s story. Like the playwright, he had grown up in Liberty City, raised by a mother with drug dependency issues. As he explains in our fascinating and at times emotional chat, Barry didn’t know where his life and career were leading before this screenplay spilled out of him on that trip, putting him on a path to Oscars glory. Here’s Barry – and an incredibly well-behaved puppy he adopted before lockdown – on the origins of Moonlight, the LGBTQ legacy of the film’s success, and why his original ending for the film might have resulted in the actor Alex R. Hibbert being eaten by sharks.Script Apart is a podcast about the first-draft secrets behind great movies. Each episode, the screenwriter behind a beloved film shares with us their initial screenplay for that movie. We then talk through what changed, what didn’t and why on its journey to the big screen. All proceeds go to Black Minds Matter UK, the NHS Charities Covid-19 Appeal and the Film and TV Charity.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek, with music from Stefan Bindley-Taylor. The Academy Award-winning If Beale Street Could Talk is based on the novel by distinguished writer James Baldwin. Directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight).
This week on the podcast we discuss the long anticipated "If Beale Street Could Talk." Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In Episode 97 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. brings Kerri Jones onto the show to discuss Wong Kar-wai's acclaimed 2013 action drama The Grandmaster. Based on the life legendary martial arts master Ip Man, the film stars Tony Leung as the man who would ultimately change the course of history by training a young Bruce Lee. The Grandmaster explores the events that led Ip Man to this destiny as well as his complicated relationship with Gong Er (Zhang Ziyi of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame). Brimming with sumptuous visuals and heartbreaking themes, The Grandmaster is indicative of Wong Kar-wai's filmography as whole. This week's guest has particularly been interested in discussing her love for his work, and this selection certainly serves as a good starting point for both Rob and listeners who have a severe lack of Wong Kar-wai in their lives. Listen in as we dissect his most recent film. Along the way, we'll touch on how Wong Kar-wai's work — especially 2000's In the Mood for Love — has affected our guest and explore the ties that bind Wong Kar-wai to recent Oscar winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight). So find some time to sit back, relax and wade into the complex cinematic tapestry that is the hallmark of director Wong Kar-wai. SHOW NOTES Buy Kai's book, Becoming Version 2.0, on Amazon! Eliza Hittman to talk about Beach Rats, her sophomore feature which is currently in theaters. The friends discuss how they bonded while doing the Cinereach Fellowship (aka “filmmaker therapy”), the parallels between Moonlight and Beach Rats, the challenges of shooting on a beach at night, how they both feared overly muscular actors might “ruin” their films, and much more. In another multi-part extravaganza that begins with an uncharacteristically positive vibes-laden monologue and discussion, the boys took some extra time to discuss the masterpiece that was Logan, its relation to The Last of Us, and how it shows that if Marvel gave a shit and followed its example, they might stop producing crap that's meant for children and dorks. Stay tuned for Part 2 next week in which the boys wrap up their conversation by doing a deep dive with Frank Darabont's The Mist and Barry Jenkins' Moonlight. Thanks again to Creative Commons and the talents of these fine artists for allowing the use of their music: "Tainted Cloth" by Oelek, "The Cannery" and "Wagon Wheel" by Kevin MacLeod, and "The Troll of the Mountain Swing" by Underscore Orkestra. Extra special thanks to the additional track provided by Michael Hart with "Brutal Heart (Instrumental)."
Tyler and Josh discuss Barry Jenkins' MOONLIGHT, the Best Picture of 2016.
Barry Jenkins' MOONLIGHT just won the Oscar for Best Picture. We talk about why it deserves it, both over the only-okay La La Land, and completely on its own merits. From the cinematography, to the story, to the acting, everything about this movie was beautiful and moved us. We also talk about how important it is to see the stories of people who aren't you. Enjoy, and let us know what you thought about Moonlight on Twitter at @TTYLshow!
This week, discussion of the industry group and guild awards so far where "La La Land" has begun to run the table, as well as the right-on-schedule backlash to the Oscar frontrunner. Inspired by one of the year’s biggest indie sensations, Barry Jenkins’ MOONLIGHT, we’re looking at another highly romanticized tale of unrequited love: Wong Kar-wai’s beautiful 2000 film IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. In this half, we talk about how affecting LOVE’s central non-love-story is - and why - and consider how the film reflects Wong’s improvisational methods and his desire to create a dreamlike return to the Hong Kong of his childhood. Plus, feedback from our last episode on AMERICAN HONEY and MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO. Two Episodes within a week of each other! THATS RIGHT! This week we bring you a jam-packed episode with in-depth spoiler reviews of Denis Villeneuve's Arrival starring Amy Adams, and Barry Jenkins' Moonlight. This is one episode you don't want to miss!
Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight" is one of the best movies of the year, and we have a fantastic time discussing it this week. We also try to figure out what Tom Cruise is trying to do with his "Jack Reacher" franchise and break down the sisyphean task Ewan McGregor gave himself by trying to adapt a Philip Roth novel. But mostly we talk about "Moonlight." Then, in our reboot section, we discuss a movie that might be the polar opposite of "Moonlight:" It's 1989's "Weekend at Bernie's." He's dead ... but nobody seems to know it! Also, Leitch makes Grierson guess what the plot of the sequel is. Timestamps: 4:00 "Moonlight" 24:15 "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" 38:05 "American Pastoral" 47:50 "Weekend at Bernie's" We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@newrepublic.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast. Also, Grierson is dressing up as Bernie for Halloween this year. It's the perfect week to be joined by Tim Gordon, my homie and president of the Black Reel Awards. We'll have a chance to discuss Nate Parker's controversial The Birth of a Nation, a film we saw way back at Sundance in January. With that film's arrival and potential place as a Best Picture contender at the Academy Awards, we're going to look at the black movies that may give it some competition. We'll discuss Hidden Figures with Taraji P. Henson, Denzel Washington's Fences, Barry Jenkins' Moonlight, and Loving with Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton.
