What's starting to interest me is stories of resilience for a post-carbon world. What are we going to need for our emotional well-being? It's going to be a different world, not long from now. If we do this, and we must do this, this transition has to happen and there's going to be a sense of loss and sacrifice and challenge, not just with what's happening externally from a climate point of view, but in how we're going to have to make changes to our lives and reorient our energies in terms of our advocacy. I feel like there's an opportunity for artists - I'm more connected to the film and television sector and the documentary community - but throughout the system, to be able to provide realistic and yet reassuring narratives about what the upside of all this might be.This bonus episode is dedicated to the memory of media producer, art and climate champion and cultural impact leader Tracey Friesen, who passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025 in Vancouver. I offer my deepest condolences to Tracey's family and her countless friends and colleagues. I'm still on break from producing new episodes of conscient. I'm mostly meditating these days but also taking courses such as Surviving the Future.I'm to think through how podcasts such as this one, can be most useful future forward. More on this later. For now, while I'm on break, I thought it would be interesting to publishing a series of ENCORE or replay episodes drawn from previous seasons of conscient.I actually got the idea my fellow podcaster Alice Irene Whittaker whose created a REPLAY series drawn from her Reseed podcast and it's a good listen. I recommend any episode but in particular Episode 8 - Reflecting Climate Grief Through Music with Tamara Lindeman. And I'm going to start on a sad note, but also one celebrating the life of Tracey Friesen. You'll hear, once again, e85 tracey friesen – narratives of resilience for a post carbon world which I recorded in 2021.For those of you who don't know Tracey, let me provide context this way. I'll read you an excerpt from a newsletterissued by the Story Money Impact organization in Vancouver that Tracey founded in 2019 and which is now run by Sue Biely. This excerpt will give you an idea of their appreciation of Tracey: Tracey was a gifted community-builder and mentor – equal parts fearless, wise, and energetic – with an insatiable curiosity. Her forthrightness left no doubt about where she stood when it came to fighting for social and environmental justice. She was a visionary tactician who recognized a gap in Canada's documentary sector, so she rolled up her sleeves and researched and published her 2016 book about impact producing,Story, Money, Impact: Funding Media for Social Change. Tracey's book became the catalyst that set this organization into motion.Thank you Sue and the team at Story, Money, Impact for that. I first met Tracey on September 21, 2021 at a event called Processing the federal election during a climate emergencyorganized by the Climate Emergency Unit. Stacey was impressive. Shortly after we collaborated on the mission circle of SCALE, the Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency network. We later became friends and often went for long walks in Ottawa or Vancouver to strategize about art and climate action but also the challenges of day-to-day life: supporting elders, being a parent, figuring out what to do… Tracey was a compassionate listener and a very wise advisor. I loved the way she understood and advocated for the power of storytelling, and I think her words will be important to us in the future. I hope we can continue her good work amplifying the voices of artists. Here's another excerpt:We do need the scientists, and we do need all of the work being done across all of the important social issues that are happening right now. And we really do need the storytellers and to validate that their story driven, narrative driven, emotionally driven pieces of work will help to touch people now to change their behavior or will help to soothe or reassure or be with them in the world post transition.Let's go back in time: 2021 with the COVID pandemic in full swing. Tracey and I are sitting, meditation style, in her living room in Vancouver. Heads up that in this episode you'll also hear excerpts from conscient podcast e26 klein – rallying through art and e54 garrett – empowering artists in between our conversation. Finally, for your convenience, I've also added a complete transcript of the episode on the episode web site including links to the events and organizations that Tracey mentions during our exchange. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, Thanks for your presence. Season 5 of this podcast is now completed. I'll be back with season 6 on art and culture in times of crisis, collapse and renewal (to be confirmed) sometime in 2025. Background on the conscient podcast I've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). It's my way to give back and be present. In parallel with the production of the conscient podcast and it's francophone counterpart, balado conscient, I publish a Substack newsletter called ‘a calm presence' which are 'short, practical essays for those in need of a calm presence'. To subscribe (free of charge) see https://acalmpresence.substack.com. You'll also find a podcast version of each a calm presence posting on Substack or one your favorite podcast player. Also, please note that a complete transcript of most conscient podcast and balado conscient episodes from season 1 to 5 is available on the web version of this site: https://conscient-podcast.simplecast.com/episodes.Your feedback is always welcome at claude@conscient.ca and/or on conscient podcast or my social media: Facebook, X, Instagram or Linkedin. I am grateful and accountable to the earth and the human labour that provided me with the privilege of producing this podcast, including the toxic materials and extractive processes behind the computers, recorders, transportation systems and infrastructure that made this production possible. Have you ever wondered why far left Gen Z activists idealize foreign cultures halfway across the planet while diminishing their own, to the point of holding beliefs that seem paradoxical or even delusional? Today's brilliant guest, Maral Salmassi, helps us explore the complex dynamics of the "Queers for Palestine" movement and the sadomasochistic interpersonal dynamics that can emerge within woke culture.Maral draws on the psychological frameworks of Erich Fromm to unpack the internal conflicts that fuel these behaviors. Are we witnessing a projection of powerlessness that leads to sadistic control over dissenting voices? As we navigate these intricate themes, we also touch on the implications of cluster B personality traits in social movements. In order to better understand ideologically captured youth, what do mature thinkers need to know about psychological phenomena such as splitting, projection, idealization and devaluation, and the Karpman Drama Triangle of victim, rescuer and persecutor? What role does social media play in amplifying these dynamics, and how does it contribute to identity fragmentation among vulnerable individuals?Join us as we dissect the paradoxes of ideological purity and the logical fallacies that can arise in the pursuit of social justice. Tune in to discover Maral's insights and my reflections on these pressing questions that resonate deeply in today's cultural landscape. Today's format deviates from the norm as Maral reads a thoughtfully scripted monologue prepared exclusively for my listeners, and I respond with my asynchronous reflections.Maral Salmassi was born in Tehran, Iran, and spent her early years in Iran, Jordan, and Israel, where her father was a diplomat under the Shah. Her mother, a literature teacher, nurtured her appreciation for culture and the arts. Following the fall of the Shah and the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war, her family fled Iran in 1986, settling in Germany. Salmassi pursued an education in Media Art in Cologne, which provided a foundation for her future endeavors. She is also a self-taught music producer and sound engineer. Since 1997, she has shaped culture as an artist, producer, and entrepreneur, initially in Cologne and later in Berlin. Her work is influenced by her diverse cultural background and a strong interest in sociopolitics and psychology. She also spent a brief period living in France, contributing to her multicultural perspective.Books mentioned in this episode:The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness by Erich FrommEscape from Freedom by Erich FrommThe Coddling of the American Mind by Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff00:00 Start[00:00:10] Ideological purity in woke culture.[00:05:06] Sadomasochism in Queers for Palestine.[00:08:07] Polarizing content and identity.[00:12:20] Gameable heuristics in society.[00:17:34] Victim mentality and self-interest.[00:20:10] Reaction formation and its implications.[00:24:46] Woke beliefs and self-interest.[00:27:25] Sadomasochism and entitlement dynamics.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community for Parents is available now! Recently, I was watching a comedy special featuring Matt Rife and he had this to say about social media:"Your social media is your art. You can create and share whatever you want to share.I post every f'ing day because it feels right to me.All I can ever hope to ever come from that is that it makes other people smile and makes them happy."This is what social media should be.In this episode I share how this message from Matt changed my views on my own content and how we can all take some peace of mind back from the world wide web through a simple mindset shift when posting or engaging content.

This week our host Am Johal is joined by NiNi Dongnier, an interdisciplinary choreographer and dancer, and Assistant Professor in Dance at SFU's School for the Contemporary Arts. Together they discuss NiNi's training and artistic experiences across Inner Mongolia, Beijing, New York, and now Vancouver. Am and NiNi also talk about interdisciplinary collaboration and pedagogy. Dongnier works through dance, performance, moving image, soft sculpture, and artistic uses of technology. Rooted in the northern trans-border nomadic philosophies and art, her art is continuous exploration of the metaphysics of body, motion, and its dynamic relation to the compound spatiotemporal, ecological, and technological contexts that shaping the moments. The process conveys her sincere perception in embodied memory, migration, ritual, landscape, and the structure and cultural entanglement behind them. She immerses herself in traditional art on one hand, and on the other hand, embraces the dissonance from various forms and philosophies, which is internalized into an independent perspective of art making. She is particularly good at finding connections and shared nature among seemingly opposite things, challenging dualistic thinking. She holds an MFA focus on Choreography and Media Art from New York University, having previously graduated Summa Cum Laude from Beijing Dance Academy with a bachelor's and a master's degrees in Chinese Ethnic and Folk Dance & Ethnography, also studied Contemporary Dance at SUNY Purchase College. She is the founder of Field Motion, and co-founder of New York based interdisciplinary artist collective NUUM. Canadian Hoffman teacher and visual artist, Jamie MacRae, is our guest this week. Jamie has been teaching the Hoffman Process for 30 years. He taught middle and high school for 42 years, while also heading an art department. He knows about creativity as a way of life. Jamie did the Process in 1990 in Ontario. It was only the second Process to be held in Canada, Just two years later, he trained to become a Hoffman teacher, becoming the first Canadian Hoffman certified teacher. The gifts of the Process were many for Jamie. In doing the deep work that week, he found his truths. He also found the tools and practices he has used to live a life of authenticity, a life lived on his own terms. In this conversation with Drew, Jamie shares many wise words of experience about creativity he's learned from both teaching and making art. Listen in as Jamie shares what every child (and adult) needs. Knowing this one thing can fundamentally shift our human relationships. MORE ABOUT JAMIE MACRAE: My City: Impressions 103 For 41 years, Jamie was an Art Educator and Head of Visual and Media Art. Immersed in an environment implementing technology in the various teaching formats available to students, he became interested in digital photography and the ability to transform his images in a digital darkroom instead of a traditional darkroom. Jamie originally trained in printmaking. Therefore, keeping his design background within the framework of his pieces is important. Now retired from teaching, he is following his artistic path. Jamie's artwork attempts to make a connection between the vibrant urban energy of Toronto and its iconic symbols and locations. The images play with the juxtaposition of abstraction and urbanity, with a realistic undertone. Starting with the Hoffman Process 30 years ago, Jamie's journey has led him to where he finds himself today. In the trio of awareness, will, and action, Jamie finds action to be the most important step to take. Taking action truly has fostered his growth in the area of his creativity and personal life. In this episode, I fangirl over Deborah Roberts, mixed media artist living and working in Houston, Texas. This is not an interview with Deborah. But instead, I give a heartfelt goddess shoutout. And I share details about her work, and why she inspires me enough to devote an entire podcast episode to her!I also share about my own personal experiences with mixed media art-making, as I am also a mixed-media artist (sort of). And I offer information about how to find, follow, and fangirl this incredibly talented, dedicated, and phenomenal artist. Deborah Roberts' work has been exhibited internationally across the US and Europe; and is included in collections at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, NYC, and LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), among others. Her work has been published in Art in America, Vogue, New York Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and New York Times. Roberts received her MFA from Syracuse University, New York.“My process combines found and manipulated images with hand drawn and painted details to create hybrid figures. These figures often take the form of young girls and increasingly Black boys, whose well-being and futures are equally threatened because of the double standard of boyhood and criminality that is projected on them at such a young age. The boys and girls who populate my work, while subject to societal pressures and projected images, are still unfixed in their identity. Each child has character and agency to find their own way amidst the complicated narratives of American, African American and art history.” -Deborah RobertsAlso mentioned in this episode: Deborah Roberts website: http://www.deborahrobertsart.com/Follow Deborah Roberts on Instagram @rdeborah191: https://www.instagram.com/rdeborah191/ Art in America, “I Will Not Be Taught How To Behave” article by Joshua Bennett: https://www.artnews.com/art-in-america/features/deborah-roberts-collage-defiance-black-children-1234591645/ 4 Ways To Create Meaningful Art: https://thegoddessattainable.com/4-ways-to-create-meaningful-art/ Beauty Hurts In The Eyes Of An Artist: https://thegoddessattainable.com/beauty-hurts-in-the-eyes-of-an-artist/ Libby Saylor collages: https://www.libbysaylor.com/collages.htmlLibby Saylor mom collages: https://www.libbysaylor.com/mom.html Libby Saylor Urbanscapes (childhood memory paintings): https://www.libbysaylor.com/urbanscapes.htmlSupport the show
In this episode of Doing Diversity in Writing, we—Bethany and Mariëlle—talk about how representation actually works. We talk about: at representation is about who we make visible and who are rendered invisible because of those decisions why minority voices are automatically amplified when they are represented that representation is not just about who is present within works of fiction but also about HOW they are present why shoehorning diverse characters into your work isn't the answer Netflix's Bridgerton showing us how we can reinvent the world without erasing painful histories why it's so hard to go against existing stereotypes and tropes in our writing (which doesn't mean we shouldn't keep trying!) Some quotes from this week's episode: “When there's very little or no representation, or all the representations are the same, that one character, that one characterisation, can be all a reader knows for a long time.” “It's not just the case that certain groups of people are culturally absent or not as present, there's also the fact that those few representations of them out there tend to be stereotypical and potentially harmful.” “If we want to make a real effort, is it enough to sneak in a single homosexual character or someone belonging to an ethnic minority? Are we doing our bit to change the world by adding one black woman to our very white cast? Or one Muslim family to our otherwise Christian or secular world?” “Inclusion matters, but representation just for the sake of inclusion isn't really the answer.” “There's more to diversity than race and gender. Don't think you can't write diverse characters just because it doesn't make sense to include a cast of black or Asian or Hispanic characters in your world.” “Each society comes with its own set of stereotypes for those who are considered ‘other', and it's really difficult to counter or break down these different ‘types' and provide better alternatives.” “Representation is not only about who we make present, it's also about how we make them present. Doing representation right means we should think through both steps.” And here are the (re)sources we mentioned on the show: Doing Gender in Media, Art and Culture edited by Rosemarie Buikema, Lieke Plate, and Kathrin Thiele: https://www.routledge.com/Doing-Gender-in-Media--Art-and-Cu-lture-A-Comprehensive-Guide/Buikema-Plate-Thiele/p/book/9781138288263 “The blurred racial lines of famous families – Queen Charlotte”: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/secret/famous/royalfamily.html Bethany's developmental editing: https://theartandscienceofwords.com/developmental-editing This week's bonus material can be found here: https://representationmatters.art/2021/10/28/episode5/ To be the first to know when our next episode drops, subscribe to our newsletter here: https://landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/r3p6g8 As always, we'd love for you to join the conversation by filling out our questionnaires. Episode 48: This Friday's interview is the 25th installment in the Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy block of podcasts. It will focus on the theme Creating Mixed-Media Art to Move Culture Forward! Our guest for this Friday on @theliberatorspodcast is Andrea Mckenzie @andreas.heart. She is the founder of Andrea's heART. Andrea originates from one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world Trinidad and Tobago. Her natural touch for creativity was discovered and developed at an early age due to her family's active involvement in the world-famous Carnival. She attributes her extraordinary creative ability to her family's respected creative legacy. The art of painting quickly stroked its way into her identity making her a household name on the island by her mid-twenties. Andrea's fascination for contrast, textures, fabrics and materials made it's way into her jaw dropping kaleidoscopic pieces. Our guest uniquely infused glass, feathers, acrylic and other materials on canvas which propelled her into achieving a viable international clientele. Throughout her young career she has already exhibited works in multiple nations including Trinidad and Tobago, and neighboring Caribbean islands, New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia , Australia. Her work has also been featured at celebrity auctions such as (DICK GREGORY FOUNDATION) and The Mayors Foyer City Hall, in Atlanta. She is also the winner of the “Black I AM Power, Art and creativity Award” 2019 in Atlanta. Her story has inspired many young women to take ownership of their own creativity. She is now developing a mentorship system where she can assist and guide young women around the globe. She lives by the saying “I believe that every woman has a voice and her voice should never be silenced.” If you would like to support by purchasing original art or prints visit www.andreauniqueart.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theliberatorspodcast/support
In episode 110 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering the photographic image as proof of history, creating an archive, and the potential repetition of portrait photography. Plus this week photographer Witold Krassowski takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Born in 1956 Witold Krassowski studied linguistics at the University of Warsaw and the Sorbonne, he received his doctorate in photography in 2009 at the Radio and Television Faculty of the University of Silesia in Katowice and three years later he received his post-doctoral degree. After receiving his final diploma his photographic hobby became his career. The situation at the time in Poland at that time was in major transition as communism was crumbling, and the Solidarność movement was created. For several years Krassowski was busy running and learning, documenting a country in a state change and turmoil. Disgusted with the state of the Polish economy, he moved to London in 1988. There he became involved with the Independent Magazine, where the photo editor Colin Jacobson offered him some assignments and suggested he join the Network Photographers agency. Krassowski has worked as a photo-reporter in Afghanistan, the UK, Mongolia, and India, but most of his creative output comes from Poland. His work has been published in various titles including Liberation, Tempo, Stern, Der Spiegel, The Observer, The Independent, The New Yorker, Forbes and Fortune, among others. He was the recipient of the World Press Photo Award in 1991 and 2003. Since 2009, he has published four books including Powidoki Z Polski: After Images of Poland and exhibited at the Freightdoors Gallery, California, USA; The Photographers Gallery, London, UK; Noorderlicht Photofestival, Holland and Perpignan Photo Festival, France. He teaches, at the Faculty of Media Art at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. www.witoldkrassowski.com If you have enjoyed this podcast why not check out our A Photographic Life Podcast Plus.
