It's not overstating it to say that I have cited Dr. Artemis Simopoulos' work in virtually every lecture I have ever given that included the topic of omega-3 fatty acids. She is an incredible human being, indomitable NIH researcher, and absolute legend in her field. In our conversation on New Frontiers, Dr. Simopoulos reviews those essential truths about the evolution of our dietary intake of omega-3 vs. omega-6 fatty acids, the increase in ultra-processed food consumption, and how these play into our health landscape today. She also pulls on some particularly interesting threads around genetic variability in our ability to metabolize fatty acids and the implications of this for inflammatory conditions (of course, almost all chronic diseases have an inflammatory component). This is especially relevant for “rapid metabolizer” populations that tend to over-produce prostaglandins and leukotrienes, compared to resolvins, when exposed to a standard American diet. I know her insights will inform how you personalize your recommendations. - DrKF Check out the show notes at https://www.drkarafitzgerald.com/fxmed-podcast/ for the full list of links and resources. His eighteenth novel was published in January 2024. His books have won the Dragon Award, the Whitney Award, and the Association for Mormon Letters Award for Novel. In early 2021, Dave co-curated “A Desolating Sickness,” a literary response to the Covid pandemic that was displayed in BYU's Harold B. Lee Library. This semester (Winter 2024) for the second time, his novel The Cunning Man (co-written with Aaron Michael Ritchey), which in July 2022 made the AML's list of 100 Works of Significant Mormon Literature, is being taught in a Mormon Lit class on BYU campus.Dave takes the position that the Book of Mormon is an ancient document, and also that the Book of Mormon is a work of temple literature. The Nephite prophets were members of an esoteric lineage that wrote for an audience that they expected to possess eyes to see and ears to hear, and the intended way to understand the meaning of their writings is to read through the lens of our own temple experience. He embodied his early thoughts in this vein in a pair of short books, Plain and Precious Things and The Goodness and the Mysteries, both self-published under the pen name D. John Butler.Dave is currently hard at work on his third book on this subject, entitled In the Language of Adam. He hopes to bring this book out in Spring 2024.Dave plays guitar and banjo whenever he can, and hangs out in Utah with his wife, their children, and the family dog. Help inspire the future of With & For! Click here to take our short survey! Four respondents will get a special box of goodies from the Thrive Center!“People who are patient are not less assertive, they are not passive, and if anything they actually achieve their goals more successfully. Anything worthwhile, you'll have to wait and you'll have to suffer. And so we need patience to be able to suffer well. Patience is not an eradication of emotions. It is the ability to feel those emotions, but to stay level headed to regulate through them. As a virtue, patience, I see as doing that for something beyond the self. So patience is really staying engaged continuing forward and pursuing the good.” (Sarah Schnitker)We live in a high-speed, high-efficiency, get-it-done-yesterday society. Why would we talk about patience? But the old adage, “Patience is a virtue” is true. A core ingredient to our spiritual health in our frenetic modern world is the ability to live fully in the moment, exercise control and stability through arduous or challenging (and even traumatic) circumstances—doing so with poise and style.Research psychologist Dr. Sarah Schnitker of Baylor University has pioneered the scientific study of patience among the virtues, exploring the physical, emotional, spiritual, and philosophical dimensions of this timeless and timely virtue. She defines patience as the ability to remain calm in the face of adversity and suffering—being able to wait well and not become inordinately overwhelmed by anxiety or sorrow.Patience makes us ask not just “What's worth waiting for?”, but “What's worth suffering for?” Our English word for suffering comes from the Latin word for “enduring suffering.” And Sarah Schnitker brings theologically rich dimensions to her psychological study of patience. In this conversation with Sarah Schnitker, we discuss:The definition of patience as a virtueThe essential role patience can play in our pursuit of meaning and purposeThe connections between waiting and suffering—and the theological and spiritual context for patienceHow patience is related to goal-setting and complementary to courageAnd Sarah offers guidance for how to cultivate patience in our own lives, using a research-backed strategy to identify, imagine, and think.Show NotesLearn about Sarah Schnitker's research on virtue and character development on Science of Virtues Lab.Pam King introduces Sarah Schnitker (Baylor University)Biblical concept of patience as “long-suffering”David Bailey Harned—eradicating problems and losing faith in patience“Anything worthwhile you'll have to wait and you'll have to suffer.”“I think many people don't have that clarity about what it is in their life that they are willing to suffer for. In this episode, we delve into the remarkable journey of Ms. Renuka Kirpalani, a trailblazer in the automotive industry. She's currently the Consulting Editor for AutoCar India. We begin the conversation by discussing her passion for automobiles––which stems from her upbringing where her father introduced her to the world of car building, racing, and restoration. She shares with us the pivotal story of entering her first race; a nerve-wracking experience that ultimately propelled her into the competitive realm of motorsports. Through her experiences, she's become a symbol of empowerment for women in a traditionally male-dominated field. She advocates for inclusivity and recognition of women's contributions, highlighting initiatives like the Women's World Car of the Year. She actively challenges stereotypes and emphasizes the importance of diverse voices in both advertising and product design. She sheds light on the historical bias that exists in the crash test dummy design and discusses efforts to address gender disparities in car safety evaluation. She reveals insights from a Korean company's behind-the-scenes approach, which involved testing car accessibility for individuals wearing saris, reflecting a more inclusive design perspective. The episode also takes an interesting turn where we get her point of view on the infrastructure development in India and electric vehicles (EVs), as well as the evolving landscape of technology in the automotive industry. On India's infrastructure development:She applauds initiatives spearheaded by Mr. Gadkari, acknowledging significant improvements in road quality and maintenance, particularly on highways. However, she laments the inconsistent standards observed in urban areas like Mumbai, underscoring the need for sustained investment and maintenance for long-term benefits. On EVS:She acknowledges the transformative potential of EVs in shaping the future of automotive technology, emphasizing the need for enthusiasts and consumers alike to adapt to the changing automotive landscape. On F1:We also talk about the recent surge in interest in Formula 1 racing, attributed partly to the captivating documentary series "Drive to Survive" and American influence on the sport's marketing. In essence, she demonstrated to us what it really means to be driven, to just follow your dreams and be confident in what you do.More resources:https://youtu.be/sOw1ZvfB6dkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5G2z10BISUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm5KZJF4rX0

The psychology of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship is a fascinating area. Let's face it – it can sometimes seem completely bizarre that someone might leave a possibly well-paid and secure job in order to follow their entrepreneurial dream. Yet this is exactly what some people do, despite all the risks and challenges involved. So what is the “psychology of entrepreneurship”? And what is it that makes entrepreneurs so unique?About our guest…Ute Stephan is Professor of Entrepreneurship at King's Business School, King's College London, a Fellow of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) and a 21st Century Entrepreneurship Fellow. She serves as Associate Editor at the Journal of Management and at Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. From 2015-2019 she was Editor-in-Chief of Applied Psychology: An International Review and from 2019-2022 Consulting Editor at the Journal of International Business Studies. As an expert on the Psychology of Entrepreneurship, Ute explores how individuals and societies can thrive through entrepreneurship. Ute's research builds evidence on how contexts (culture and institutions) shape entrepreneurship and well-being, and how entrepreneurship, in turn, can help to build more inclusive societies. You can find out more about Ute's research here: https://sites.google.com/site/stephanute/home Some relevant articles co-authored by Ute on the psychology of entrepreneurship are as follows:Gorgievski, M. Israel's brutal bombardment of Gaza has killed over 20,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 50,000 others since the 7 October attack by Hamas. While India strongly condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with Israel, India recently voted in favour of several draft resolutions in the United Nations that criticised Israel's conduct in Gaza and supported aid for Palestinian civilians, after initially abstaining on a resolution that had called for an immediate humanitarian truce and unhindered humanitarian access in the Gaza strip. This signifies that deeper shifts have taken place in India's approach to Israel. For most of independent India's history, New Delhi had no diplomatic relations with Israel. Today, Indian and Israeli flags are displayed together at rallies demonstrating solidarity with Israel. India and Israel under Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu have developed a significant military partnership and growing economic ties. In a review essay on Azad Essa's Hostile Homelands: The New Alliance between India and Israel, for Himal Southasian, Rohan Venkat explores the ideological convergence of Hindutva and Zionism, and the consequences for Kashmir and Palestine – and argues there is much more driving India and Israel's deepening ties. Rohan Venkat is a Non-Resident Visiting Scholar and Consulting Editor at the Centre for the Advanced Study of India, University of Pennsylvania. He writes India Inside Out, a newsletter on Indian politics, foreign policy and history. In this edition of Himal Interviews, Rohan Venkat talks about how the most potent commonality between India and Israel isn't in the trade and defence ties they have been building over the past three decades. Instead, Rohan explores how the ideological movements that lie at the core of India and Israel's political leadership today serve to justify the excesses of both states, and the wider implications of this for Southasia. Discover the psychological secrets behind why people are leaving behind their faith and quietly quitting church as we sit down with esteemed guests, Dr. Aaron McLaughlin and Dr. Daryl Van Tongeren. In our eye-opening conversation, we dig into their recent study "Losing My Religion," funded by the John Templeton Foundation, which aimed to understand the characteristics, reasons, and mental health of the religious “dones” (individuals who once held religious beliefs but have since walked away from their faith). We explore the four primary reasons why people leave religion: intellectual issues, religious trauma, personal adversity, and social reasons. We also uncover the intriguing "brunch replacement hypothesis," where people who don't prioritize religion pair up with someone who also doesn't prioritize it, eventually opting for brunch over church. Don't miss our discussion on the practical implications of the "Losing My Religion" study for churches and individuals, delving into the need for genuine care and interest in people's stories and the importance of humbly loving our neighbors through their complex journeys. Tune in now for this enlightening and thought-provoking episode! Bios: Aaron McLaughlin, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral research associate at the Ken Matheny Center for the Study of Stress, Trauma, and Resilience at Georgia State University. "Subjectivity and consciousness are the two main mysteries that science is still faced with. I'm an optimist. I believe that in the next half a century we might make progress on understanding consciousness." - Stanley A. Klein, psychophysicist, professor of Vision Science and Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley and a member of the Berkeley Visual Processing Laboratory. Episode 21: The Duet of Physics & Psychology with Psychophysicist, Stanley Klein In episode 21 of our podcast “On Consciousness” we welcome psychophysicist Stanley Klein, Professor of Vision Science and Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley. Stan's major area of research is neuropsychology and neurotechnology, a field of science that studies the body and mind through the nervous system by electronics and mechanisms. Stan was a Consulting Editor for Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, a publication of the Psychonomic Society. In this conversation Bernie and Stanley discuss the links between physics & psychology, Galileo's contributions, and how science grows. Talking Points 0:00 – Intro 6:17 – Stan Klein's academic and professional journey 14:50 – Does the brain enable the conscious mind? 22:16 – How Galileo helped to found physics. 32:06 – How do we agree on the nature of nature? 39:15 – The growth of physics 45:38 – Science grows through honest conversations. 53:50 – Stan Klein on the future of science Summary How do you think about subjectivity? This friendly conversation is opened by Nat Geld, our podcast producer. She asks Stan how he thinks about subjectivity. Stan's optimistic view is that within the next 40 years or so, science might be able to understand subjectivity and consciousness. Bernie and Stan start a dialogue about his professional journey. As a physics undergraduate at Cal Tech, Stan had the honor of publishing a paper with Richard Feynman, the great physicist. After earning his PhD from Brandeis University in 1967, Stan taught at Claremont Colleges and finally arrived at the School of Optometry at UC Berkeley, where he has been since 1987. Consciousness and the Brain Stan asks, "Is consciousness located exclusively in the brain?" Bernie says, “Consciousness emerges in an enormous universe of nature, but only in a very small part of that universe. All the conscious species we know are animals living in the outer crust of planet earth. Empirically, we know nothing else. These days, this brutal fact tends to be forgotten because we have so many speculative ideas that tend to confuse us about the basics. But in science, we always need to start from what we know for sure. To the best of our knowledge today, the animal brain is the home of the conscious mind.” Scientific definitions change over time. For Galileo, gravity meant the speed of wooden blocks sliding down angled planes. For Newton, gravity meant the attractive force of planets in orbit around the sun. Finally, for Einstein, gravity meant the influence of time and space on the apparent acceleration of objects in space. There is both great continuity between Galileo, Newton and Einstein, and at the same time, there is a constantly evolving concept of gravity. The concept of consciousness is also evolving with every new discovery. Stan suggests that the big revolution in physics occurred in the 1920s with the discovery that a photon can be a wave or a particle. Einstein passionately opposed this idea, and tried to disprove it for the rest of his life. That debate still continues today. Bernie then mentions that new ideas and discoveries are always hard to accept, and they usually require a period of debate and adaptation. The idea of the conscious brain is now going through just such a period. But of course both sides tell stories from their own points of view. One side explains how the Vatican unreasonably refused to accept Galileo, and the other side explains how Galileo unreasonably refused to accept the Vatican. This is a perfectly normal debate in the history of science. There are two sides, not just one. In the episode's final moments, Ilian talks with Stan about what he believes to be the future of science. "Science needs to focus on climate change," says Stan. "I believe that in the next half a century we might make progress on understanding consciousness." On Episode 13 of the Pursuit of Health podcast, Dr. Fethke invites his own most influential mentor, Dr. Welton M. Gersony - a pioneer and world-class Pediatric Cardiologist - to remind us all of the importance of maintaining the fundamentals of Patient-Physician Communication. Over the past 5 decades Dr. Gersony has been one of the most influential physician leaders in American Pediatrics and, specifically, Dr. Fethke's own field of Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Gersony received his medical degree at the State University of NY-Upstate Medical Center, completed his General pediatric training at Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland, Ohio and his fellowship training at The Boston Children's Hospital of Harvard Medical School. In 1968 he founded Columbia University's Division of Pediatric Cardiology where he served as the division chief and the Alexander Nadas Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University's College of P&S until 2007. Several landmark medical achievements occurred under his watch at Columbia including the first successful pediatric heart transplant in 1984, and the foundation of the Pulmonary Hypertension and Adult Congenital Heart Centers. His myriad distinguished services include being the past Chair of AHA Council of CVDY, the ABP Subboard of Cardiology and the Steering Committee of the World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. He is the 2003 recipient of the AHA's Distinguished Service Award and the 2007 Founder's Award of AAP. He has served on multiple editorial boards and was a Consulting Editor for Circulation medical journal. He is recognized as a pioneer in our understanding of the course of congenital heart defects through his work as a Principle Investigator for the 1st and 2nd studies of the Natural History of Congenital Heart Defects. He has authored more than 300 papers and chapters as well as one of the first major textbooks dealing with Congenital Heart Disease in the Adult. Amongst all of his successes he remains most proud of his recognition as a world-class teacher of future generations of pediatric cardiologists, having trained 120 Pediatric Cardiology fellows during his over 35 year tenure at Columbia University - consistently demonstrating an uncanny ability to know peoples' strengths and potential even before they see it in themselves. During part 1 of this episode, Dr. Gersony takes us through the mechanics of the all important first patient visit as he has personally demonstrated for so many of his students. He stresses that this visit lays the groundwork for the trust between a physician and patient family that is critical to the patient's future success. He urges us to “let them tell their story” without injecting our own assumptions and biases. He explains how important it is to be aware of harmful nonverbal cues that we send patients. He humbly advises that we never consider ourselves to be 100% infallible, but rather maintain open communication between our patients and their referring physicians. He finishes this first episode with an emphasis on maintaining Hope, even in the face of serious illness and bad news. Ultimately his message is that “Taking the time up front, saves time later”. Next time in Part 2 of Episode 13, Dr. Fethke picks up the conversation with Dr. Gersony as he discusses how to Humanely give Bad News to a patient and family while avoiding the family's natural feelings of Fear and Guilt. You can follow Dr. Eric Fethke on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok @drfethkemd(This episode will also available in video format on Youtube @drfethkemd).
