For some, 2008 may have been no different than current world affairs, but it was anything but that, Twilight had just been released and wars began happening everywhere, installing the Jacob vs Edward factions. If wrestling had a hometown, Osage, Iowa would be in contention for that honor. The town of about 3500 has produced two Olympic wrestlers and perhaps the first-family of Iowa wrestling. With 6 state titles, 3 Big Ten Championships, 6 All Americans, a national championship, international success, and an Olympian, it is safe a safe bet that the mantle on the Schwab family fireplace has had to be reinforced a few times. Episode 122 brings the youngest Schwab brother, UNI Panther head coach Doug Schwab, to the podcast to tell his stories from on the mat. Mike and Mark Schwab were two very successful wrestlers. Mike was a state champion and Mark was a 4-time state champ, only losing 1 match in high school. Both Mike and Mark were All Americans at UNI. Little brother Doug followed in their footsteps and added one more state title to the family trophy case before going on to wrestle at the University of Iowa. Doug's career as a Hawkeye included 130 wins, 3 Big Ten titles, a national title and 3 time All American honors. Doug continued his career earning a Pan American Games gold, US National Championship, and a trip to the 2008 Bejing Olympics. Schwab's career is now in its second phase as he is the head wrestling coach for the UNI Panthers. After serving as an assistant at Virginia Tech and the University of Iowa under Tom Brands, Schwab took the reins in Cedar Falls in 2010. Since that time, he has helped rebuild the Panther program, with the help of brother Mark, and restore it to one of the top 15 programs in the country. Schwab and his UNI Panthers are now in the Big 12 Conference and UNI had its first national champion, Drew Foster, since 2000.
Following an in-depth production tour at GU Energy, BJ and I met with Magda Boulet to record this episode in her office. Magda is Vice President of Innovation, Research, and Development at GU and it all started many years ago when she knocked on the door and asked for help. At the time, Magda was a roadrunner looking to up her game and she knew that sports nutrition was an important piece for her to learn. That day she met the legendary Dr. Vaughan, who created the first energy gel to aid his daughter to reach her peak performance in ultrarunning. Never did Magda think that day, that she would also someday become an ultramarathoner and a GU executive. Magda grew up in Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1991. She barely spoke English and started her career at Taco Bell in Southern California. She became a US Citizen on September 11, 2001. She attended Cal Berkeley and loved it so much that she never left. It is the town that she still calls home. She ran for Cal Berkeley where she met her husband and fellow runner Richie. A professional marathoner for many years, Magda trained under the guidance of Jack Daniels for over a decade. In 2008, she placed 2nd to Deena Kastor at the Olympic Trials in Boston and earned herself the honor of representing the United States at the Bejing Olympics. An experience that she describes as her biggest disappointment but also the experience that led to a rebirth of her career and her fastest times. Magda has generously shared her backstory on several podcasts and we've linked to a few of those below in the show notes so definitely check those out. For this episode, we wanted to tap into her knowledge bank and dive right into sports nutrition. We talk about the biggest mistake that she sees athletes make when it comes to nutrition and her perspective on low carb diets for athletes. We also talk about the importance of longevity in the sport, her relationship with Jack Daniels and her transition from road to trail. If you've heard Magda before or met her in person then you know that she is genuinely kind and holds a contagious passion for life. She is committed to pulling the best out of herself every day whether that is on the trail, at home or in the office. Although she dreams of sleeping in until 10 am and going on vacation to do nothing, she knows that an active, full life is the only choice for her. We are so grateful to have recorded this episode with her and excited to share it with the YT community. Namaste -Jess

Prominence is besieged. The Wraith and Ghost teamed up to take down one of Irish’s top lieutenants, and recovered critical information about the personal history of their foe. The final pieces of the puzzle are falling into place. The mob is preparing for its final blow against the masked vigilantes. The Olympian’s quest for vengeance is drawing to a head. The revolution that Wraith promised is coming. The cracks are widening. No matter how it comes out, Prominence will not be the same. Side Chatter PLAYERS Sam – Clarence Young (The Olympian). Primed to be one of the most-winning medalists of the 2008 Bejing Olympics. His body was in peak physical condition, his mind was ready: but his entire career was about to come crashing down. A victim of Mob scheming and violence, his family was hurt, and he went out for vengeance. Matt – The Wraith. Got his Masters in Electrical Engineering with a minor in acoustic design. 10 years back, shortly after beginning employment, his father was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease. He got himself checked out and found out that he’s also positive for Hereditary Huntington’s. With nothing to live for and nothing to lose, he decided to take down the mob before he died. Manda – The Ghost. A quiet mask with unknown intentions. Agile and good with a gun, terrifying to lay your eyes on in a dark alleyway. The mob stands victorious over the vigilantes of Prominence, SC. The Olympian, defeated, fled the city. Reverb went out in a blaze of glory, slipping quietly into the underworld in the chaos. A new vigilante is skulking in the shadows. Ghost, an agile robber in a horrific mask, is looking into the sudden disappearances of Prominence’s very visible defenders. Clarence Young receives a visitor, and an offer. A man without a name leaves warnings to the masters of industry, predicting a revolution. Heroes are hard to kill in this city. They don’t stay down. The unlikely team of The Olympian and Reverb are throwing their best efforts at the criminals attempting to attain a stranglehold on the city. After surviving an ambush, they finally get a pair of names: ‘Irish’ and an assassin named ‘The Witch.’ Their only other lead, a Louis Hudson (who has apparent ties to the Irish Mob) is being coerced into a meeting. Prominence is besieged by the Irish Mob and vigilante justice is the only thing that is standing between them and control of the city. Can The Olympian and Reverb hold the line, or will the weight of corruption crush them where they stand? NOTE: This game was recorded live, and as such the recording quality is lower than our norm. We apologize. PLAYERS Sam – Clarence Young (The Olympian). Primed to be one of the most-winning medalists of the 2008 Bejing Olympics.
