Welcome to Episode 63 of Tablesetters! University of Delaware Head Baseball Coach Greg Mamula joins us for an in-depth conversation about the state of college baseball and the evolution of UD's program. Now in his third season leading the Fightin' Blue Hens, Coach Mamula reflects on his coaching journey, Delaware's recent success, and the transition from the CAA to Conference USA. Coach Mamula is just the fourth head coach in Fightin' Blue Hens baseball history. We discuss his path to the position, his previous stops, and what it means to lead this program. Delaware posted its best record since 2017 last season, finishing 31-26 overall and 15-9 in the CAA while making a deep run in the conference tournament. He shares what led to last year's success and how they plan to build on it. The Fightin' Blue Hens opened this season with a tough series at FAU, followed by a postponed matchup with Maryland. With another Florida series ahead against FIU, Coach Mamula explains how he's keeping his team focused and what excites him most about this year's roster. Delaware is set to leave the CAA at the end of the season and transition to Conference USA. Coach Mamula details how the move came about, what changes it will bring, and how it affects recruiting, scheduling, and competition. Recruiting is always a challenge, especially for a northern school competing against powerhouse programs in the South. We ask what Delaware's biggest selling points are for attracting top talent and how they navigate those challenges. Delaware has long been known for its offensive firepower, but Coach Mamula has emphasized pitching development since taking over. He shares his approach to building a more complete team on both sides of the ball. We also get his thoughts on the impact of NIL and the transfer portal, how those factors have reshaped college baseball, and whether mid-majors are at a growing disadvantage. If given the power to change anything about college baseball, what would he tweak? Whether it's rules, scheduling, recruiting, or the presentation of the game, we get his take on the sport's evolution. As a former pitching coach, he also weighs in on the rising number of arm injuries and how programs can better balance player development with long-term health. With MLB prospects making the jump to the big leagues faster than ever, does college baseball deserve more credit for preparing them? We discuss how the college game has influenced professional development and what trends could continue. We also take a look at the University of Delaware's deep connections to pro baseball. Blue Jays manager John Schneider is a former UD catcher, and alumni like Chad Kuhl, Ron Marinaccio, Brandon Walter, and James Meeker have made their mark in the pros. Coach Mamula shares his relationships with UD's MLB connections and his experience coaching future major leaguers like Ian Happ, Nolan Schanuel, and Joey Wendle. Finally, we wrap up with a Mount Rushmore of University of Delaware Athletics, where Coach Mamula gives his picks for the most influential figures in UD sports history. It's Week 1, which means the season is officially underway? And, of course, drama follows. The highlight is from Salt Lake City, where Delaware survived a stick check to their face-off guy with 2:00 remaining, which set up the most dramatic ending of the season. To talk about the Blue Hens' debut win, IL's Terry Foy and Nick Ossello are joined by former Delaware captain and assistant coach, who watched the game on a phone with 25 former teammates in the Wells Fargo Center as another fellow Hen, Mike Robinson, took on the Wings with the Halifax Thunderbirds. From there, Foy and Ossello talk about Maryland's OT win at Loyola, Carolina's impressive showing vs. Michigan, Hopkins' week-long marathon capper vs. Georgetown, plus Virginia and Duke wins. Oh, and we have a sponsor! This year, Inside Lacrosse is proud to partner with the NCAA to offer you, our loyal listeners, $5 off all single-day ticket options (men and women) by using the code ILPOD at checkout. Around this time every year, dozens of parents of high school prospects ask IL's Terry Foy some version of the question, "How does recruiting work?" In an effort to round out that answer, he's interviewing a series of DI men's lacrosse coaches about their process, concluding this year's series with Delaware coach Ben DeLuca. The Blue Hens sit at the intersection of several aspects of college athletics — geographically (north/south), academically (most selective/most prestigious), competitively (perennial tournament contender/perennial title contender) and, most pertinently as they transition from FCS to FBS football, high-major vs. low-major. It all manifests in how DeLuca builds out Delaware's roster, and he discusses how that informs his evaluation and recruiting strategies.
The University of Delaware football team is coming off a 9-4 (6-2 Colonial Athletic Association) 2023 season that saw them advance to the second round of the FCS playoffs. Delaware is in the process of transitioning up to FBS and this will be their final season in the CAA. Matt spoke with head coach Ryan Carty about his hopes for the 2024 campaign. “1-on-1 with Matt Leon” is a KYW Newsradio original podcast. In episode 103 of White Canes Connect, Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein speak with Kat Bottner, the First Vice President of the Keystone Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania, a along with PhD candidates Abigail Nolin and Kayla Hepler from the University of Delaware's Department of Material Science and Engineering. They delve into their groundbreaking research on tactile aids aimed at enhancing accessibility for the visually impaired. The project, initiated through Kat's network connection and supported by a grant from the National Institute of Health, seeks to innovate beyond traditional raised bumps and lines used in Braille. Abigail and Kayla explain their focus on the material properties that affect touch perception, like surface roughness and chemistry, to create more advanced tactile stimuli. This could potentially revolutionize the accessibility of spatial information such as graphs, maps, and diagnostic tests. Kat's role as a consultant involves recruiting participants for the research and ensuring that their work remains user-focused. She also helps make the project's communication accessible, including braille labeling and proofreading. The research has shown promising results, with tests indicating that certain chemical coatings can be distinguished by touch, paving the way for new tactile aids. The team is excited about the potential applications, including more intuitive touchscreens and enhanced Braille displays, which could significantly improve the daily lives of the visually impaired by providing more detailed and accessible tactile information.
