Rockfish are very vulnerable to overfishing and don't have babies every year. Very rarely a "jackpot recruitment" happens and tons of rockfish babies are born (they give birth to live young, meaning no eggs!). The last time it happened in the San Juan Islands was decades ago. Our guest today are Adam Obaza and Olivia Carmack of Paua Marine Research Group. We work with Paua to collect data on young rockfish to aid in the recovery plan for the species. Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. This is Season 7, Games People Play. Games are about competition conducted according to rules with participants working toward a goal. Games are a part of every culture and are one of the oldest forms of social interaction and engagement. Games can be fun, challenging and exhilarating. They can also be intense, cutthroat, and lethal. This season, our authors have fashioned deadly games and unscrupulous villains to test your detection skills. This is Episode 18, that original LARP game War is the featured game. This is Did Not See That Coming by Ken HarrisTWO LISTENER NOTES before we get started. First, this is a two-part Mystery to Die For. Half the story was in last week's episode with the rest of the story, the deliberation, and the big reveal in this one. So, if you missed Part 1, please go to it first.Second, murder and solving it is our thing here at Mysteries to Die For but today's story includes some real life topics that some audience members may be sensitive to including violence against children, bullying, and antisemitism. DELIBERATIONJawnie stand-in Steve Rockfish and his sidekick Estelle are chipping away at Karen Lazar's cold case, but there's still some work for us to do. Here is a list of the people living and working in Ewan, NJ back in 1976:Gladys and George Lazar, Karen's parents, who had recently moved to the small farming townMikey Hardison, the boy who had a crush on Karen and worked for CarlßonScott and Tommy, schoolyard bullies who sent Karen into the woods on a scouting missionHarry Hardison, Mikey's father, a drinker who had issues with the Lazar's Jewish faith and his own lusting after Gladys.Vern Gicobe, a friend of Hardison and loner who discovered Karen's body while huntingManfred Carlßon, German owner of Carlßon Game Processing, who kept a poster of Karen in his shopHere is what Rockfish and Estelle (and Jawnie, too) have discovered:Karen's body was found five years after she disappeared. It had not decomposed. She was killed by strangulation. While there was little documentation on the body, photos showed cuts inflicted post mortem covered her. A single large, deep cut was on her back.No autopsy was performed but DNA samples were taken and preserved. No matches were found through CODIS.The older boys Karen was playing Army with—Mikey, Tommy & Scotty—were the last to see her alive. The local police cleared the last two boys at the time, noting they were seen in town.Mikey admitted going after Karen that day and finding her next to a creek, crying. When he tried to kiss her, she punched him, sending him into the creek. She ran off and he said he didn't see her again. Rumor had it the married couples of Ewan like to trade partners. Harry Hardison was reported to be very fond of Gladys Lazar, despite him being antisemitic and she being Jewish.Hardison disapproved of his son's crush on Karen and sent him to work with Carlßon, saying the hard man would straighten Mikey out.Vern Gicobe said Mikey would stare at the missing person picture of Karen that hung in Carlßon's. Mikey gave Vern “the creeps”.Adult Mikey told his “Meemaw” about the “two peas in a pod” and that when he found Karen, she was crying over a problem with her father but didn't say what it was; she never told him.Rockfish's theory is Gicobe...

Chris interviews Michael Schade of ROCKFISH Games and asks them about the design and development of their space exploration RPG, Everspace 2. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode457.mp3 The Sausage Factory 457 was edited by Chris O'Regan The Sausage Factory is an interview-based podcast that lifts the lid on the makers of videogames. It examines the way in which games are made by asking the very people who create them, though the questions asked aren't just about game design, they also cover how developers made their start and what inspires them as creators. Split into two halves, the first segment delves into what makes the developers tick by asking about how they started, what and who inspires them and what games they are currently playing, whereas the second part of the show covers the game that they are currently working on and the thought processes behind its development. So, if you really want to hear about a game's gestation in full and frank detail then you have found the right podcast.

Inside this Episode with your host, Mitch Hampton What is in one television show from the wayback machine of fifty years ago? Particular as we are deluged with so much to watch today? Well, you could say, a lot. I guess you might also say that I have been a fan of The Rockford Files and its star James Garner for as long as I have been conscious I never thought that one television show would be inspiring and meaningful enough to have its own podcast and come to think of it I never knew there would be anything like a podcast. One of the many things I appreciate about hosts Eppy ( Epidiah Ravachol) and Nathan's ( Nathan D. Paoletta ) show, "Two Hundred A Day, A Rockford Files Podcast" is that they essentially do a "close reading" of the show and as audiences of my podcast might know I hold that approach above practically everything. They also represent two different generational takes on the show. I very much enjoyed this episode. It inaugurates the first time on our podcast we have had more than two people in a single episode I can only hope there are many more like this one in the future. (Note: for those not in the know Rockfish was the name Rockford Files character Gandy Finch, as played by the great Isaac Hayes, called Rockford.) About the showTwo Hundred a Day is a podcast by Nathan D. Paoletta and Epidiah Ravachol. We are exploring the intensely weird and interesting world of the 70s TV detective show The Rockford Files. Both celebration and analysis, we break down episodes of the show and go deep into how they work as well-constructed narratives. In each episode of Two Hundred a Day, we watch an episode, recap and review it as fans of the show, and tease out specific elements that hold lessons for writers, gamers and anyone else interested in making better stories. Join us in this episode as we descend into the Graveyard of the Pacific with Matt McCauley, President of The Northwest Shipwreck Alliance and Sarah Haberstroh, Manager of Underwater Operations for Rockfish Inc. Matt's passion for deep-water marine salvage is intertwined with that of his friend Jeff Hummel. As scuba diving high schoolers on Mercer Island in the early 1980s, the two made headlines recovering World War II aircraft from the bottom of Lake Washington. In 2010 Matt returned from the East Coast to support Jeff's lifelong quest to find the SS Pacific, a nearly 300-ft long transatlantic sidewheel steamer that sunk off Cape Flattery in 1875. At the time it was laden with gold from the Cassiar Mining District of NW British Columbia, near Alaska. The shipwreck drowned all but two of those onboard, which may have totaled as many as 500. Sarah Haberstroh left a career in underwater warfare in the United States Navy last year to join the team searching for the SS Pacific. She maneuvers Rockfish's remotely operated vehicles for the current recovery phase of the operation. Matt and Sarah recount the ill-fated ship's history. They talk of the bootstrapped technology, the gumshoe detective work and the perseverance required to locate it in its resting place 1,000 feet beneath the sea. Animating their endeavor—and today's conversation—is a mission of recovering a complete collection of the vessel's artifacts: Relics honoring those who died in the calamity. "This tells a story. It is very rare that you can find a vessel from which you can extract all these artifacts and essentially have a time capsule from 1875." – Matt McCauley

Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. Some episodes are original stories, others will be classics that helped shape the mystery genre we know today. All are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. This is Season 5, Move It or Lose It. This season contains original stories paying homage to the vehicles that propel mysteries forward. A train was the setting for Agatha Christie's famed Murder on the Orient Express. A river boat then took center stage on Death on the Nile. Cars have been prominently featured in American crime stories with the glory of the get-a-way vehicle. Then there are the heists from carriages to trains to armored trucks. For Episode 8, a prized Percheron is the featured vehicle. (That's a horse.) In this episode of the podcast, the Water Colors team shares their thoughts on the worst aquarium advice they could find on the internet. You can share the worst advice you've ever seen online on the Water Colors Aquarium Gallery Podcast Listeners Facebook group. Addendums: - In this episode, we guesstimated that there are approximately 240 species of damselfishes. The family Pomacentridae is currently comprised of 31 genera and over 380 species. - In this episode, we failed to mentioned that Green chromis (Chromis viridis) is technically a species of damselfish, as it is a member of the Pomacentridae family, despite the fact that it would have been relevant to the discussion. Corrections: - In this episode, we brought up the pixie hawkfish (Plectranthias inermis) and discussed how it is not a member of the hawkfish family, Cirrhitidae, but is in fact a member of the damselfish family. It is actually more closely related to anthias, being a member of the Anthiinae subfamily. We also failed to mention that there is an actual hawkfish species that is also called the "pixie hawkfish". Which would be Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus. The fact that two different fish from two entirely different familes could carry the same common name is a great example of why we don't like common names. Species Mentioned in this Episode: - Oscar cichlid (Astronotus ocellatus) - Goldfish (Carassius auratus) - Mbuna cichlids ("Rockfish" within the Tribe: Haplochromine) - Maroon clownfish (Amphiprion biaculeatus) - Damselfish (Family: Pomacentridae) - Green chromis (Chromis viridis) - Cardinalfish (Family: Apogonidae) - Bicolor blenny (Ecsenius bicolor) - Clown gobies (Gobiodon spp.) - Yellow watchman goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus) - Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica) - Hawkfish (Family: Cirrhitidae) - Arc-eye Hawkfish (Paracirrhites arcatus) - Pixie "hawkfish" (Plectranthias inermis) - Falco hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys falco) - Flame hawkfish (Neocirrhites armatus) - Diamond sleeper goby (Valenciennea puellaris) - Sixline wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia) - Royal gramma (Gramma loreto) - Ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) - Coral beauty angelfish (Centropyge bispinosa) - Blue-faced angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon) - Engineer goby (Pholidichthys leucotaenia) - Tangs (Family: Acanthuridae) - Bird wrasse (Gomphosus varius) - Ctenochaetus tangs (Ctenochaetus spp.) - Chocolate tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) - Tomini tang (Ctenochaetus tominiensis) - Kole tang (Ctenochaetus strigosus) - Bamboo shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis) - Bristlenose pleco (Ancistrus spp.) - Common pleco (Pterygoplichthys pardalis) - Oto catfish (Otocinclus spp.) - Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) - Rosy barb (Pethia conchonius) - Tridacna clams (Tridacna spp.) - Bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium spp.) - Gouramis (Family: Osphronemidae) - Honey gourami (Trichogaster chuna) - Betta (Betta spp.) - Three-spot gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus) - Dwarf gourami (Trichogaster lalius) - Pearl gourami (Trichopodus leerii) - Pelvicachromis kribensis "Moliwe" - Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) - Discus (Symphysodon spp.) - Sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumila) - Panda barb (Haludaria fasciata) - Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) - Danios (Subfamily: Danionin) - Tetras (Order: Characiformes) - Swordtails (Xiphophorus spp.) - Catfish (Order: Siluriformes)
In this episode we are joined by one of the leading minds for targeting striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay, Shawn Kimbro. Shawn is an acclaimed author of three books and countless articles focused on fishing the Chesapeake. Shawn dives right into the details of successfully targeting huge striped bass on light tackle. He talks about the birds you want to find, the bait you want to match, the areas holding fish TODAY and throughout the remainder of the season. We talk about the gear and the techniques that will get you on the trophy fish you want this season. If you have any interest in the fall striped bass fishery in the Chesapeake listen to all of the gems Shawn shares in the episode below. You do NOT want to miss out on this one!
Generally called long-leader fishing but perhaps more appropriately called long-dropper fishing, ODFW staff and partners created this fishery several years ago to take pressure off the nearshore reefs and specifically yelloweye rockfish. By going a bit farther out and using gear that keeps bait off the bottom, anglers are able to target new and sometimes much-larger rockfish like canary rockfish and bocaccio, and have a 10-fish bag limit. While it's mostly been a charter fishery, more and more sport anglers are starting to notice. Featuring ODFW's Lynn Mattes, Captains Shannon Hunter, Mike Sorenson and David Peterson.
