Good morn! Happy NFL Draft Eve, everyone. There's a ton at stake for all teams, but nobody needs to nail the draft quite like the New York Giants. To discuss, I recorded a Substack Live with noted comedian (and long-suffering Giants fan) Joe Praino. He runs his own Substack — “Miscellaneous” — and is the co-host of the “Dirty Sports” podcast. I first got to know Joe when he produced the Adam Carolla Show for about a year. Naturally, he's got many thoughts when it comes to these Giants. We both try to chart a logical quarterback journey forward for Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll and the Giants. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston give the organization some breathing room but these Giants are obviously still on the quarterback search. It's been a bear. Also, what happened to Daniel Jones? I wrote about his exit late last season, and explore more this conversation. We've been bullish on this regime at Go Long. This is a crucial moment for both Schoen and Daboll. Thanks to everyone who watched lived. Always a pleasure to have you on. To join future shows, be sure to download the Substack app:We'll have you covered all three days of the NFL Draft right here at Go Long.Bob McGinn's 41st annual draft series is also live. Here we go again. It's April and we're excited about the Atlanta Falcons. This organization has teased us all for years. But Michael Penix Jr. justifies optimism into 2025. Everything that preceded this shocking draft pick hasn't been ideal, but if Penix hits? Nothing else matters. (Although I suppose $100 mill is $100 mill.)Let's make sense of it all with our pal Justin Felder of Fox 5 Atlanta on the Go Long Pod. Against all conventional wisdom, at No. 8 overall the night of April 25, 2024, GM Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris selected the Washington bomber. Whether you're a fan of the Falcons or simply fascinated by the inexact science of finding a quarterback, you'll enjoy this conversation. What's next for Kirk Cousins? We offer thoughts. Finally, we get into the Georgia Bulldogs. Once again, they're sending blue-chippers to the pros. Felder covers the SEC power, too. One key defender makes a ton of sense for the Buffalo Bills in the first round.Video and audio is available above, as well as Apple and Spotify.Last week, icymi, I caught up with Matthew Coller of Purple Insider. Here's a column on Penix and these Falcons from the annual meetings. All links to Bob McGinn's 41st annual draft series below…* Part 1, WR: Tetairoa McMillan, and then... what?* Part 2, TE: Is Tyler Warren the next Great American NFL Tight End?* Part 3, OT: Inside the hunt for the next great left tackle* Part 4, G/C: Who let the dawgs out?* Part 5, QB: Do NFL scouts view Cam Ward & Shedeur Sanders as franchise quarterbacks?* Part 6, RB: 'Rare human being and a rare player,' but when to draft Ashton Jeanty?* Part 7, DL: Meet the Brawlers* Part 8, Edge: Herd of QB Hunters arrive with warnings...* Part 9, LB: Jihaad Campbell, Alabama's latest ass-kicker, leads class full of playmakers* Part 10, CB: The generational talent of Colorado's Travis Hunter* Part 11, S: Why Malaki Starks, 'A+ across the board,' can run your defense* Part 12, ST, Is it worth drafting a kicker anymore? There's also brain drain on the coaching staff. Green Bay didn't do much in free agency. (Shocker, I know.) The youngest team in the NFL is banking on its own players improving. These New England Patriots are swiftly becoming a reflection of their new head coach. Who knows when this team's ready to win, but all five signings the first 24 hours of NFL free agency should bring to life everything Mike Vrabel preaches to the team as a whole. On Substack Live, we continued the conversation with Andrew Callahan, Patriots beat reporter at The Boston Herald and host of the Pats Interference podcast. * Milton Williams broke the bank. What's his ceiling? * New England was spurned by Chris Godwin, and that's been a pattern at wide receiver. Without a doubt, this is the worst receiving corps in the NFL. There is one veteran available who makes sense.* And the most important person in the building is obviously Drake Maye. The Patriots would love it if receivers warm up to the idea playing with their young QB exactly as John Brown, Cole Beasley and Stefon Diggs flocked to Josh Allen in 2019 and 2020. To hear more, visit www.golongtd.comThe Detroit Lions lost far more than a football game to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Ford Field.Twenty-one players are now on injured reserve, and that number will likely grow to 22. It doesn't sound good for running back David Montgomery playing again this season. In a 48-42 loss, Montgomery (MCL), Carlton Davis (jaw) and Alim McNeill (knee) all went down. So… what now?The Lions found ways to keep winning when their best defensive player Aidan Hutchinson — a DPOY-level talent — was lost for the season. With three regular-season games left, they're grab-bagging like never before. McNeill (profiled here) and Montgomery (here) have been vital organs to Dan Campbell's team. In line for the No. 1 seed, these Lions are in danger of falling. Here on the Ty & Bob Pod, your NFC North-centric show each week, we examine everything in detail. Hall of Fame scribe Bob McGinn has been closely watching the film of all Lion replacement players all season long. He believes panic is warranted. Still, Campbell is already doing his best via an impassioned radio hit to rally his troops. Back to eating “molded bread,” these Lions face their greatest test yet in 2024. We've got a loaded episode for you. After plenty of Lions discussion/analysis, we transition into the Green Bay Packers thumping the Seattle Seahawks around the 53-minute mark. It was impressive. Jordan Love is playing mistake-free football, and his playmakers are stepping up. Defensively, the pass rush is coming alive.McGinn believes the Packers have the best shot at making the Super Bowl out of all three NFC North clubs, and explains why. You'll want to stick around for his weekly “McGinn Memory” segment. One decade later, we relive the most absurd football game of a generation: Green Bay's NFC Championship loss to the Seahawks. We all remember Brandon Bostick's flub — an unforgivable error to many teammates — but I pointed the finger at Mike McCarthy's passive approach then (and now) and McGinn puts that loss on the MVP Aaron Rodgers, whom he calls “the most overrated quarterback I've seen” on the pod. And of course, we recap the Minnesota Vikings' 30-12 thrashing the Bears. They've got an opening in the North and Brian Flores' defense has Caleb Williams coiling on the bench.Thank you for listening everyone.Go Long subscribers can access the FULL two hours of NFC North talk. After three crushing defeats, the Chicago Bears canned Matt Eberflus. It's a move they should've made a long time ago. But as we discuss here on the Ty & Bob Pod, the issues run deeper in Chicago. The ownership is much stronger elsewhere in the NFC North, and it's showing in the standings. So, what now? Should president Kevin Warren and GM Ryan Poles hire an offensive wiz who'll maximize Caleb Williams' talents or an old-school type who'll build a team capable of exchanging body blows with Dan Campbell's crew year-in and year-out? Contrary to Warren's sale's pitch, this is not the most coveted job on the market. Bears talk starts around the 22-minute mark.Sam Darnold and the Vikings were clutch. The Vikings are built the right way, and it's showing late in games. We review their 23-22 win over Arizona at the 43-minute mark.Bob McGinn sees a very encouraging development in Wisconsin. This Matt LaFleur-led team has the muscle that so many Packers edition past lacked. His full Packers-Dolphins film breakdown starts at 1:02:00.And… yes. We've got to give McGinn the floor at the top of the pod. What a win for his Michigan Wolverines. He said he's an “animal” during “The Game.” What does that look and sound like exactly? McGinn supplies the full play by play.As always, we cap with a McGinn Memory. It's hard to play in the cold and the snow, but those teams down south also have a distinct advantage each September. Good afternoon, readers! The goal is to take you beyond the press conference as much as possible. Sometimes, that means brokering a meeting over cheese curds. On our most recent trip to Wisconsin, Go Long brought LeRoy Butler and Evan Williams together for a first (football) date. Chicago Bears fans have descended from Cloud 9. The hype has subsided and the panic is here.Ah, now, this is familiar territory for the franchise. Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was fired on Tuesday and more changes could be on the horizon. The playcalling has been bad. The offensive line is battered and struggling. But how worried should the Bears be about No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams? Is starting Tyson Bagent a possibility? We get into everything here on the latest episode of the “Ty & Bob Pod” — your NFC North-centric podcast — with Hall of Fame scribe Bob McGinn. Chicago's depravity at the quarterback position was explored in our two-part series over the offseason. Williams was supposed to be different, and he still can be. What a fragile time for Chicago. Also on this episode, the Minnesota Vikings squeaked out an ugly 12-7 win over Jacksonville. This team has far exceeded expectations and enters the cupcake portion of its schedule, but Sam Darnold's three picks are a concern. The Detroit Lions found a way to win vs. Houston despite five interceptions from Jared Goff. We shouldn't be surprised. The real question is whether or not James Houston relieved himself during the game. We investigate. And, somehow, we meander into some Aaron Rodgers talk. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.golongtd.comThe NFC North has been high drama from the get-go this 2024 NFL season. All four teams quickly found hope through all four quarterbacks. Now, the weather's getting colder, the stakes are rising and we'll see who can separate. This Sunday, the Detroit Lions (6-1) head to Wisconsin for a date with the Green Bay Packers (6-2). Both clubs are feeling damn good after victories. Who has the edge? How did each team score victories this past Sunday? This week's episode of the Ty & Bod Pod — with Hall of Fame scribe Bob McGinn — explores in full. Josh Jacobs has become central to the Packers offense. Rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper continues to be a menace. Jordan Love is now battling a groin injury. Jaire Alexander's effort on a few plays left quite a bit to be desired. The Packers are a fascinating (and healthy) bunch right now. We get into everything. The Lions, meanwhile, are again coping with a Jameson Williams incident. Not ideal! Dan Campbell's search for a pass rush has led him to strange places, too.Elsewhere, the Chicago Bears lost in the most absurd fashion imaginable. Tyrique Stevenson, of course, was caught on camera taunting fans on the final Hail Mary. How did Caleb Williams play? It was an adventure for the No. 1 overall pick.Minnesota lost to the Rams in L.A., and now must replace its dancing-bear left tackle, Christian Darrisaw. While we recording this episode, GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah swung a trade for Cam Robinson. Finally, the “McGinn Memory” is a classic. Let's just say it involves quarterback Lynn Dickey and dog pee. The best game of the season, to date, was played at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday. Detroit took this heavyweight brawl vs. Minnesota, 31-29. Jared Goff was nearly perfect. Jahmyr Gibbs continues to prove Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell right. The Lions had a handle of Brian Flores' wacky pressures. And with so many pass rushers out, the Lions relied on pickle-lid tight coverage in the secondary. It was an impressive afternoon for a roste besieged by injury. Here on the Ty & Bob Pod with Hall of Fame sports writer Bob McGinn, we dissect the game in full.Maybe the Vikings lost, but they proved they're also ready to contend. Sam Darnold was damn good in his own right. Jonathan Greenard is worth every penny, too.Around the one hour-mark, we shift our conversation to the Green Bay Packers' 24-22 win over the Houston Texans. Minnesota (5-0), Detroit (4-1), Green Bay (4-2) and Chicago (4-2) occupy the best division in football. So, let's dive in.A loaded episode for you this week with co-host Bob McGinn. The Lions went full Tony Soprano on the Dallas Cowboys, but it came at a steep cost. We begin the show with a ton of Aidan Hutchinson talk. How will Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell replace the sole source of their pass rush? McGinn offers a few realistic trade options. Expect Detroit to be aggressive. It's Super Bowl or Bust for this team. How did the Lions dismantle the Cowboys, 47-9? McGinn dissects the film as only he can. The offensive line left a trail of bodies in its wake. Carlton Davis is starting to prove why he's a perfect fit in Campbell's defense, too… cleat to the face ‘n all. At the 48-minute mark, we shift to the Packers' blowout win over the Arizona Cardinals.More specifically, wide receiver Romeo Doubs. We got to know the wide receiver with a two-part feature:There's a lot to unpack. Is Doubs pissed? Where do the two sides go from here? Here's thinking the two parties are best together. Doubs is exactly what the Packers need on offense. McGinn uncovers a lot on film, too. Rookies Edgerrin Cooper and Evan Williams are heating up in a big way. Zach Tom's been excellent. Jaire Alexander is forever a topic of conversation. As for the Chicago Bears? Caleb Williams is getting better every single week. Across the pond, the No. 1 overall pick torched Jacksonville for four touchdown passes. We both like what OC Shane Waldron's dialing up on offense. Bears talk starts at the 1:20 mark. This week's “McGinn Memory” is a classic, too. Bob brings us back to his quarterback days in the U.P., when a future NFL pro lined up on the other side of the ball. The Vikings' ability to pivot out of the sort of disaster that ruins organizations is impressive, though McGinn cites a few flaws in Darnold's performance that could come back to bite. Packers-Titans analysis kicks off around the 41-minute mark. Jaire Alexander's pick-six was a game-changer, we're both very high on running back Emmanuel Wilson and what about that pass rush? Brandon Beane played poker on Day 1, found his wide receiver on Day 2 and sure hopes the Buffalo Bills landed a few more long-term starters throughout the 2024 NFL Draft. It was an eventful weekend at One Bills Drive. Go Long has been tracking the direction of this team closely since last December's three-part series, and wanted to take a moment to assess the state of affairs with the draft now in the books. On Sunday, I examined why Beane's guts are a positive sign. Buffalo has lacked such cojones when it comes to those Kansas City Chiefs. Here on the podcast, let's welcome back Bills beat writer Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News. We analyze why Coleman was the pick at No. 33, how he'll fit into the offense and — mainly — why there should be some real optimism with the team despite losing so many starters this offseason. Free agency is one week away. Deals will be struck soon. The Atlanta Falcons may start the party, too. GM Terry Fontenot made it very clear they'll be aggressive — the time to find a quarterback is now. For a full state of the franchise, I chatted with good pal Justin Felder from Fox 5 Atlanta this podcast episode. Felder offers his thoughts on the team's quarterback shuffle, Desmond Ridder, Fontenot's free-agent decisions (past and future) and the hierarchy of this organization. Who's in charge on draft day? We both agree, too. Right now, all signs point toward Cousins heading south. If the goal truly is to win in 2024, Fontenot will try to make the veteran quarterback an offer he cannot refuse. Excellent analysis and insight from Felder. You can listen to the audio here and everywhere you pod, including Apple, Spotify and YouTube. GREEN BAY, Wisc. — Forty-eight hours ahead of wild-card weekend, make sure all chores are completed and your schedule is clear. There's a very good chance you won't be that interested in leaving your recliner. The NFL playoffs begin Saturday and I cannot remember a better slate to kick things off. It's a blend of future Hall of Famers, revenge games, inclement weather, brewing upsets and fan bases that've been dying to host a playoff game. Love from Hagemeister Park in downtown Green Bay, here's the latest Go Long Show. My co-host has worked in the front offices of these playoff teams, too.* Patrick Mahomes vs. Tua Tagovailoa, and the long-term implications. * What does Jim Schwartz have cookin' for rookie C.J. Stroud? The environment will be electric in Houston.* Packers-Cowboys. Does Monos see the same thing as Bob McGinn?* Why Monos is in on the Los Angeles Rams. He sees some damning numbers concerning the upstart Lions. * Weather could get funky in KC and Buffalo. Mike Tomlin finds ways to keep games close, too. But the Bills prepared for a game like this offense. * The Philadelphia Eagles are a disaster at the worst time. * Wink Martindale shows us all why the “mutual parting of ways” is never so eloquent. * Pete Carroll became the last man at the party dancing. No longer is it a foregone conclusion that the Detroit Lions will run away with the NFC North. With a convincing victory on Thanksgiving Day, the Green Bay Packers didn't only pull themselves back into the playoff race — they've got a shot to catch the Lions. Ahead, they'll host the Chiefs, Buccaneers and Bears and travel to the Giants, Panthers and Vikings. Starting, first, with the defending champs. However this 2023 season shakes out, Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst must love what they see in their new franchise quarterback. On the Ty & Bob Pod — with our resident Hall of Fame sports writer Bob McGinn — we again explore the NFC North in great detail. * How Jordan Love shredded the Lions secondary.* Dan Campbell isn't hitting the panic button. He always knows exactly what to say.* It'll be hard to pull Jonathan Owens off the field, regardless of who's healthy at safety.* How the Packers' defensive front beat up the Lions' mighty O-Line. Penei Sewell allowed six pressures — unheard of. Campbell has pegged Sewell the best player on the entire roster. * There's still hope in Detroit to go the distance. Don't bail yet. McGinn explains.* Did the clock strike midnight on Joshua Dobbs? This was ugly. * You heard it here first: The Chicago Bears roster is better than most think — at least on defense. They got after Minnesota.* A look back at a 2007 Packers-Chiefs game at Arrowhead and, more specifically, why Tony Gonzalez doesn't get the love he deserves. Gosh, did I gain a whole new appreciation for the tight end working on “Blood and Guts.” He forced the sport to change, even if it meant a near-brawl with Mike Mularkey. You can listen to the show here at GoLongTD.com and everywhere you pod, including Apple and Spotify, by linking up your account. For decades, there's typically been nothing for Detroit Lions fans to get excited about on Thanksgiving Day. Dan Campbell has ushered in a new reality with an 8-2 club in pursuit of the NFC's top seed. What planet are we on again? The hype is real this season.Times have changed and Ford Field will be rocking on Thanksgiving Day.And yet — ever so steadily — the Green Bay Packers' offense has awoken from its slumber. This should be a different team with a different quarterback than the Lions faced at Lambeau Field earlier this season. Jordan Love had the finest game of his young career in the Packers' 23-20 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, completing 27 of 40 passes for 322 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Now, he'll enter his most hostile environment to date. That being said, as Bob McGinn details on this week's episode, there should be opportunities for Love in the secondary. There is too much happening in the NFC North to jam our weekly discussion into one post.Miss Part I? Here's a lengthy chat on the state of the stammering Green Bay Packers. For Part II, we begin with the Baltimore Ravens' throttling of the Detroit Lions. One week ago, we were crowning the Lions as contenders. Dan Campbell's crew, as co-host Bob McGinn eloquently puts it, had their brains handed to them by the Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. Was this a one-week fluke? A bad omen? It's complicated. We discuss. And, holy, did the Minnesota Vikings make an NFC statement by upsetting the mighty San Francisco 49ers, 22-17. Without his star receiver, Justin Jefferson, quarterback Kirk Cousins was exceptional in a primetime spot. Jordan Addison introduced himself to the country. And blitz-happy Brian Flores hinted that this is a new day for the Vikings defense. Go Long spent time around the Vikings in training camp. They were optimistic about 2023 — eager to prove that was substance to all those one-score wins a year ago. The life-saving K.J. Osborn is one player who brings this team's spirit to life, too. After a 1-4 start, the Vikes are now 3-4 and should be thinking about contending. This season. With Cousins. Finally, we wrap with Eagles-Dolphins talk and another “McGinn Memory.” Thanks, everyone. This is a public episode. The Detroit Lions — the Lions! — just may become this year's Super Bowl Champions. It's time for everyone to face that reality.Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes have spent three years building a mentally- and physically-tough powerhouse of a roster. So much has gone into this, too. From the Jared Goff trade to building an ass-kicking offensive line, to resetting the secondary to — above all — seeking a specific DNA in players. (Links to stories below.) The time is now for a franchise that's toiled in the NFC basement. Detroit's 20-6 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wasn't necessarily pretty. But, once again, the Lions proved to make the sort of hustle plays you won't see on other teams. Like, say, from Chicago Bears rookie Darnell Wright on a Vikings fumble recovery. On this episode of the “Ty & Bob Pod” with our resident Hall of Fame sports writer Bob McGinn, we analyze the Lions' win over Tampa Bay and what makes this a legitimate contender. We then try to make sense of that messy Vikings-Bears game, and think big picture on the Vikes. Where should GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O'Connell go from here? How the Vikings perform against the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday night could dictate the terms of their season. We cap with Cowboys-Chargers talk. Contrary to a media talking point this week, McGinn isn't impressed with quarterback Dak Prescott. Finally, this week's “McGinn Memory” turns the clock back to 1984, to a classic snow globe of a Packers game.
