Deep Story, One Objective: The Secret to BOLD Brands

Find out if your brand is built to last — or just chasing the next trend. Thinking with a longer horizon (even 20 years!) is the edge your business needs to withstand today's constant change. In this episode, Jess Dewell talks with Bob Rogers, Founder at BRC Imagination Arts and Author of "Deep Story A Masterclass in Experiential Story Making," about how practicing ruthless focus around one objective is what separates BOLD brands from the rest. There is an art to the discipline of editing and removing all except the most essential elements from a project. This includes planning for where you expect the future to be going, and recognizing that true hospitality is helping people find the magic within themselves. The emotional heart of your brand and the people you serve is a timeless element, and designing experiences that speak to that will perform better and last years to decades. In this episode, you will discover: Why the first step is determining your objective before any ideas or task lists are made (Don't skip this step. Ever!) How reciprocal kindness and emotional experience create meaningful brand experiences that endure Why lasting transformational experiences require a precise vision for your desired outcome How to avoid fuzzy language and instead articulate specific, observable outcomes Why people make decisions with their hearts first — and how storytelling is your primary lever How authentic hospitality places the focus on your guest's journey, not your expertise The power of designing experiences that empower participants to discover new capabilities Why building trust through partnership and collaboration is essential for transformational change How to claim your informed intuition and listen to it Why you must be focused to the point of ruthlessness — there can only be ONE objective It is BOLD to let go of linear planning and instead practice focused, ruthless clarity around one objective. The secret of bold brands is their ability to connect to a shared emotional truth with their customers. When you lead with that truth and edit everything else away, you create experiences that last. --------------------   If you want to identify business bottlenecks, the necessary skills, the initial actions to take, the expected milestones, and the priorities for achieving growth, try the "Growth Framework Reset" approach. This will help you keep learning and growing while working strategically on your business. --------------------   You can get in touch with Jess Dewell on Twitter,  LinkedIn or Red Direction website.

Customer Transformation: How Emotional Connections Create Lasting Brand Loyalty Featuring Bob Rogers

Creating the Emotional Resonance that Connects Customers and Brands Shep interviews Bob Rogers, a former Disney employee, founder of BRC Imagination Arts and author of DEEP STORY™. He talks about how businesses can build lasting customer relationships by starting with the heart, using storytelling to create emotional connections, and transforming customers' identities through memorable experiences.    This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more:    How does the Deep Story framework drive customer transformation? How can businesses change a customer's identity through brand experiences?  What is the role of emotional resonance in customer service?  How can companies turn brand engagement into measurable customer action?  How can companies identify the emotional connection between their brand and their customers?  Top Takeaways:    A customer should leave changed in some meaningful way after interacting with your brand. The biggest question isn't what you are selling, but the difference you want to make in your customers.   A purchase becomes more meaningful when it changes how customers see themselves. For example, customers entering a magic shop should have an experience that makes them feel like they can try the magic tricks themselves. Beyond the purchase, a stronger connection forms when customers can see what they can become through it.  Great experiences trigger action. Beyond attracting and impressing customers, a great experience should guide them toward an action (like a purchase, a download, or a subscription) that matters to your business.   Start with the end in mind because when the outcome is clear, every tool and strategy becomes more intentional. Start with what you are trying to do and what you want your customers to feel.   Lasting customer relationships are not built on features and products alone. They are created when a brand connects with something that they care about. Clever advertising may get customers to buy, but an emotional connection brings them back.   Go deep into your audience and, at the same time, into your subject, brand, or product. Look for the positive emotional trigger that exists in both. That emotional resonance connects the heart of your audience to the heart of your brand.  Plus, Shep and Bob talk about Deep Story and how it can transform customers and businesses. Tune in!  Quote:   "Your objective is not just to sell the idea. It's to create a slight change in the customer that causes them to identify with your product or your brand."     About:    Bob Rogers is the founder of BRC Imagination Arts and a former Disneyland Magic Shop magician who was fired from Disney three times and rehired each time. He is the author of DEEP STORY™: A Complete Guide to Creating Transformational Visitor Experiences.  Shep Hyken is a customer service and experience expert, New York Times bestselling author, award-winning keynote speaker, and host of Amazing Business Radio.    Learn more about your ad choices. Since founding the company in 1981, Bob has helped create award-winning museums, brand homes, visitor centers, and immersive experiences around the world, earning nearly 500 international awards for creative excellence. His new book, Deep Story, shares many of the principles that have guided his work over the past four and a half decades. In this interview, Bob talks about deep story, show business identity, and getting fired from Disney. Deep Story “You need to go deep, deep, deep into two things and find a common link. You need to go deep into the hearts of the audience... then you go deep into the subject or deep into the brand... and what you're looking for is the same emotional truth.” Bob explains that meaningful attractions are built by connecting the emotional core of an audience with the authentic emotional core of a brand or subject. Rather than relying on technology, clever ideas, or spectacle alone, he encourages creators to begin with the desired outcome and design experiences that inspire lasting change after guests leave. Using examples ranging from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Las Vegas Raiders, Bob demonstrates how emotional resonance creates memorable experiences that influence behavior long after the visit ends. These principles form the foundation of Deep Story and can be applied well beyond themed entertainment. Show business identity “Part of what I was doing there was show business identity.” Bob reflects on his first job demonstrating magic tricks at Disneyland, where he realized that the performance was only part of the experience. Beyond entertaining guests and selling magic tricks, he was helping visitors see themselves differently. Someone entered the shop as a Disneyland guest and left believing they might be a magician. That realization shaped the philosophy behind BRC Imagination Arts. Throughout his career, Bob has focused on creating experiences that do more than entertain. His goal has been to inspire positive changes in how people think, feel, and act, making transformation the true purpose behind the show. Getting fired from Disney “I've been fired by Disney three times. So if I can do it and just keep going, then so can they.” One of the interview's most memorable stories centers on Bob's curiosity as a young Disneyland Cast Member. Fascinated by how the park operated behind the scenes, he wandered into maintenance areas and asked countless questions about everything from Audio Animatronics to operations. That curiosity eventually led to his dismissal and a permanent "no rehire" designation. Rather than allowing those setbacks to define him, Bob used them as motivation. His entrepreneurial journey began after another opportunity led him to form BRC Imagination Arts, ultimately turning a career disappointment into the foundation of one of the industry's most respected creative firms. He shares this story to encourage young professionals to persevere through setbacks, recognizing that career obstacles often become turning points.   Bob can be reached on LinkedIn, and readers can learn more about Deep Story at www.bobrogers.com. Experience by Design

I have been talking quite a bit about this concept of The UN-WOW, a call to focus more of our attention on the everyday experiences that make up the bulk of our lives. Just because they are everyday and mundane doesn't mean they can't be designed with intentionality. It also means if everything is an experience, that means as experience designers, every moment is open for design. Or in other words, experience designs of all kinds. When talking about experience designs of all kinds, this includes metamorphic (or transformational) experiences. Sometimes transformation happens without any warning, such as with a life-changing event. Other times, we can create experiences meant to have a transformative impact on people. On this episode, I'm fortunate to have Bob Rogers in the Experience by Design studio. Bob has had a career of creating experiences that are meant to have a lasting impact. His work includes founding in 1981 BRC Imagination Arts, “a full-service, strategic design and production company that translates brand and cultural stories into transformative, human experiences.” During the last 40-plus years, they have created a range of transformational experiences for companies, museums, sporting events, entertainment, and more. I should mention that one of Bob's films is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest running daily screening of a film in the same theater. If that wasn't enough, he also has received the Thea Award for Lifetime Achievement, which is given to an individual for their key contributions to the evolution of themed design and entertainment. Finally, if that wasn't enough, he has served on the Academy Award Board of Governors. Bob talks about his new book “Deep Story: A Complete Guide to Creating Transformational Visitor Attractions,” set to be released on September 8th. We talk about his book, and how to create experiences that have a lasting impact on visitors. We talk about his entry into this kind of work, stemming from his desire to be a film director. He describes how his early interest in magic led to a broader interest in how to leave audiences with a sense of wonder. We also discuss how technology can be a helpful tool in creating these experiences, but you first need to work on the story that you are trying to tell and the transformation you are trying to achieve. Bob emphasizes the importance of creating emotional connections with audiences through storytelling and immersive experiences. Bob shares examples from his work, including projects at Space Center Houston, Knott's Berry Farm, the Holocaust Museum, and many more, emphasizing the power of personal connections and authentic storytelling. On this episode of People Solve Problems, host Jamie Flinchbaugh welcomes Bob Rogers, Founder and Chairman of BRC Imagination Arts and author of the new book Deep Story: A Complete Guide to Creating Transformational Visitor Attractions. Bob has spent five decades building visitor experiences for some of the world's best-known brands and museums, work that has earned more than five hundred international awards. It started somewhere smaller. At eighteen, he performed magic in the Magic Shop at Disneyland, where the job was to amaze people and then sell them the trick while they were still amazed. The lesson that stuck came after a customer bought a trick, read the instructions, and returned to expose him. A senior magician he admired told him the shop was not a temple built to display his skill. People came not to admire him, but hoping he would help them find some magic in themselves. Bob has treated that ever since as the foundation of selling, of hospitality, and of any attempt to communicate. This is where he believes most business communication goes wrong. Organizations decide what they want to say and build outward from the message, but wanting to say something does not create anyone's desire to hear it. Deep story runs the other direction. You look far into the audience for an emotional truth that already moves them, and far into the brand for the same thing, and the part people miss is that you are not looking for two triggers. You want the one that already exists in both. He frames it with a formula he admits sounds silly for creative work. An audience, A, enters a triangle, the delta symbol of change, and comes out as A prime. A prime minus A is the whole assignment, and that difference is almost always a change of heart, not a change in what people know. The Johnnie Walker experience in Edinburgh shows what that looks like in practice. It runs nine stories, and most guests arrive believing they do not like whiskey. Rather than teaching them the correct way to drink it, the experience asks what flavors they enjoy and builds a first cocktail to match. Bob reports net promoter scores in the low to mid eighties and a brand conversion score of ninety-one. Bartenders are trained never to push their own tastes. When the Milwaukee Brewers wanted an experience honoring founder Bud Selig, the team passed over his complicated public record for something smaller. Selig fell in love with baseball because his mother took him to games, which is how much of the crowd came to the sport too. That, Bob says, is the trigger you cannot manufacture, only find. For listeners whose reach extends to rearranging conference room chairs rather than commissioning a building, Bob suggests finding someone who will guide the process rather than decorate it, and starting with the heart rather than the technology. Fifty years have convinced him that people settle on emotion first and arrange the facts to fit afterward. What You Will Learn In this episode, you will discover how the most powerful experiences are engineered around a single shared emotional trigger that lives in both the audience and the brand simultaneously. You will learn why most corporate and museum experiences entertain without transforming, and what business leaders must do differently. Guest Bio Bob Rogers is the founder of BRC Imagination Arts, a globally recognized experience design firm with 44 years of work spanning presidential libraries, cultural institutions, and major brand homes. His projects include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Jameson Distillery experience in Dublin, and the nine-story Johnnie Walker Princes Street experience in Edinburgh. Rogers began his career in the magic shop at Disneyland, an experience that permanently shaped his philosophy on identity transformation. His forthcoming book, Deep Story, distills decades of award-winning methodology into a practical framework any leader can apply. Website: BobRogers.com | Company: BRCweb.com Episode Summary Bob Rogers joins Michael Levitt on the Breakfast Leadership Show to discuss his forthcoming book, Deep Story, releasing September 8th. Rogers traces the origins of his approach to his days in the Disneyland magic shop, where he discovered that the most meaningful part of a demonstration was not impressing the audience but shifting their perception of what they themselves were capable of. For 44 years, BRC Imagination Arts has been designing permanent experiences for iconic institutions and brands. The defining question his firm asks is not whether visitors were entertained, but whether the experience changed what they do next. The conversation explores the core mechanism of Deep Story: finding the same pre-existing emotional trigger in both the audience and the subject, then building the entire experience around that common thread. Rogers argues this is what separates experiences that permanently alter behavior from those that simply produce a pleasant afternoon. The most resonant experiences cause people to feel that their own inner life is being articulated more clearly than they could manage themselves. Rogers also reflects on why he wrote the book, citing mentors such as Marty Sklar and Buzz Price, Disney Imagineering giants who invested in him early. He describes the book as paying that generosity forward to the next generation of leaders. Key Insights Transformation requires a target. Most organizations spend enormous resources creating experiences without defining the specific behavioral change they want to produce. Deep Story begins with that definition and works backward. The shared emotional trigger is the architecture. It is about locating the same emotional truth that already exists in both the audience and the brand, then making that overlap the structural foundation of everything. Identity shift is the highest outcome. The most powerful thing an experience can do is cause someone to see a new possibility in themselves. Entertaining is not transforming. Memorability and enjoyment are not the metric. The metric is whether the visitor leaves prepared to act differently. And it's like, ooh, it's a huge mistake. Because you really want to think of it as just another tool. It's not like, oh, let's go hammer everything and see what happens, you wouldn't do that just because you got a new hammer, right?” “The main thing is, every single person in your organization has patents inside them. That's the starting point. Start with that mindset. Everybody has patents inside them.”“Here's the tricky thing about the pivot. When you're building a business, a bullseye is a two dimensional object, like X axis and Y axis. But in business, it's a multidimensional space. So you're pivoting two degrees in an unknown direction. Talked to Bob Rogers the force behind ULD Care. Bob is based in Hong Kong where Christmas and the New Year was celebrated with the "usual Hong Kong enthusiasm" and of course we are only a few weeks away from doubling down with Chinese New Year as Year of the Dragon approaches as a big celebration this year. So in January while the world takes off in 2024 is the last month of the Year of the Rabbit before February on the Chinese Zodiak Calendar debuts the Year of the Dragon . While hoping that we all still got some of good cosmic fortune left ULD Care is out with some good ideas on the subject closest to Mr. Rogers heart and as usual he is kicking the cans. Question: what do black holes, AI, and digital twins of supply chains have in common? Answer: Bob Rogers, CEO of OII.ai - a company using AI to create digital twins of supply chains, allowing planners to quickly and accurately run what-if scenarios to improve their planning. And the black holes? Bob cut his AI teeth creating digital twins of black holes to understand what was happening around supermassive black holes in space.I invited him to come on the podcast to talk about how that work can be translated (many years later) into supply chain digital twins. He graciously agreed and we had a fascinating conversation covering how the research on black holes led to supply chain digital twins, how having a digital twin of your supply chain can help, and why an AI is necessary to do that.
