It's been a hot minute since we've done a BaconBit, but it's also been a few years since Captain Marvel was in theaters. Both Joel & Kent went into The Marvels with some pre-conceived notions about the current state of the MCU, and during this review we'll see if Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan can change their minds. Don't worry, we'll isolate the spoilers in another dimension during the first part of this review. And we'll use our powers to alert you before we swap places into spoiler territory. There's no need to watch WandaVision, Ms. Marvel, or Secret Invasion to understand this BaconBit, just press play.

Both Joel and Fletch are in for Thursday, Fletch has been out to the Easter Show and Joel has been back at the gym.
Greetings listeners! We made it through 2021! But before we put it to rest and look forward to all the great new games coming up in 2022 (we are in the month of Elden Ring!) it's time to take a final look back at the year that was. Both Joel and Kyran have put together top ten lists for their personal Game of the Year lists in the same manner as last year, it's something we found incredibly fun so decided to give it another shot! Kyran's list starts at 0:13:39 and Joel's list starts at 0:28:17. It was another surprisingly good year for games, we also make some time for shout outs for games that didn't make the cut or we didn't play enough of to really put them in the running to make our lists. Thanks for sticking with us for another year, we've got a packed Quest Log episode coming up with both of us currently getting lost in the Hisui region in Pokemon Legends Arceus, so you can look out for our impressions on that soon! If you want to get in touch with us, especially if you want to let us know your Game of the Year then use the links below!! Sign up for our mailing list! We also have t-shirts and mugs with our logo! Happy Halloween! Let's learn about some shapeshifters of folklore, including the werewolf and kitsune (thanks to Joel, Pranav, and Emma!), and a real-life shapeshifter. Don't forget the Kickstarter, as if I'd let you forget it: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kateshaw/beyond-bigfoot-and-nessie Further reading: Folklore and Mythology Breeding Butterflies Further listening: MonsterTalk (note: sometimes there's adult language or really scary themes) Sandman Stories Presents podcast A death's head hawkmoth, looking spooky: A death's head hawkmoth caterpillar, not looking spooky at all: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. It's Halloween week and that means we need to talk about a truly spooky monster! Both Joel and Pranav suggested the werewolf a while back and Emily suggested the kitsune [kee-tsoo-neh], so let's learn about shapeshifters and were-animals of all kinds. “Wer” is an Old English word that just means “man,” and just to get confusing, the word “man” used to refer to any person. The word “wif” referred to a woman, with wifman actually meaning woman. From those words we get the modern uses of wife, woman, and man, while “wer” is obsolete except in werewolf. Let me derail myself from talking about language by reminding you about our Kickstarter! It ends pretty soon, on November 5, 2021, so if you've been thinking about backing the project this would be a great time. It's to help me publish a book all about mystery animals, called Beyond Bigfoot and Nessie: Lesser-Known Mystery Animals from Around the World. The book has a foreword by Blake Smith of MonsterTalk, the science show about monsters, and if you don't already listen to that podcast, it's a whole lot of fun and informative too. Thanks to everyone who has already backed the project! Now, Happy Halloween and on to the spookiness! The important first question we need to answer is if werewolves really exist. No. They do not exist outside of folklore and fiction, and I'll explain why later so you don't ever have to worry about werewolves or any other shapeshifters. But first, let's learn what werewolves and kitsunes are. Werewolves are supposed to be people who can turn into wolves. Depending on the story, this can happen when the person wants to turn into a wolf or it can happen during the full moon whether the person wants to be a wolf or not. Sometimes the person has a magical wolfskin or some other item that they put on in order to transform. Sometimes they have to cast a magic spell, but sometimes it's a curse that someone else has inflicted on them. Some stories say that the only way to kill a werewolf is by shooting it through the heart with a silver bullet, especially one that's been blessed by a priest. The werewolf is mainly from European folklore, where for many centuries all werewolves were also supposed to be witches. Until about the 18th century in some areas, if someone accused you of being a werewolf, you could be put on trial as a witch. Lots of people were convicted of witchcraft and killed during waves of witch-hunts in various parts of Europe. Most of the people accused were women, especially elderly women, especially women who were widowed or single, especially women who owned land that someone else wanted. Hmm. The kitsune is a creature of Asian folklore, especially from Japan, that's basically a fox that can work magic. It's sometimes said that all foxes can turn into humans if they want, especially older foxes. The older and more powerful a kitsune is, the more tails it's supposed to have, up to nine. Kitsunes sometimes play tricks on people but they can also act as guardians and friends. About the same time that old ladies were being accused of being werewolves in Europe, though, around the 15th to the 18th centuries, something similar happened in Japan.

Welcome to this month’s DisNOT episode. Avery chose this film from her childhood with open, innocent childlike wonder and nostalgia...and then it all takes a dark turn in Part 2. Both Joel and Avery had seen this movie and really enjoyed some of the funny characters and lines when they were kids. This movie is very quotable and both Avery and Joel remember quoting this movie in their daily lives. Who doesn’t remember laughing at Dana Carvey while dressed as a turtle and asking if he’s not “turtly enough for the turtle club?” However, after watching this movie again today, we have both come to very different opinions. Someone once asked if this movie should be a cult classic and we both agree the answer is no. It is simply a bad movie. We now get the 1% rating it has on rotten tomatoes. If you haven’t seen this movie or haven’t seen it in a long time, listen to our episode and learn WHY we think it’s so bad and why it does NOT hold up to today. This may be the worst one we’ve watched so far, but that’s ok, because it was still entertaining and our nostalgia for it will never go away...but that is where this movie shall stay, in our memories.
The guys are down a Reacher this week but press ahead and seem to all try and do their best to make up for the missing conversation of Ralls. Joel and Micah kick off this episode and are soon joined by Richard, as he senses a disturbance in the force and decides he better try and keep them on track! Both Joel and Micah ended up at the Dr. this week, Micah thinks his doctor is much cooler and way more legit than Joels. Joel is continuing to explore the stock market and has started getting some positions in call options, which everyone just shakes their head in like they understand what that is. Richard had a great road trip and gives some great insight into the Carbon Market and Agrivoltaics. The gang dive into a discussion on the current political climate, divide and concur, covid payments, the American "system", universities and the confederate flag. Truly fast paced and interesting discussion, and impressive for this group. Micah leads a brief review on the David Goggins book, Can't Hurt Me which is a phenomenal source of motivation. If you have read the book, you often find yourself saying, "Would Dave have given up?" when they hit a problem and keep on pushing through! Micah had word of the week as well, and took a suggested word from a loyal listener (Thank you Spoon) and discussed Honyonker with the gang. There is some excellent reader mail and feedback from our Bob O'Rourke stories and admiration of Bob. Richard has the next entertainment spotlight and choses the book Devolution by Max Brooks, so be prepared for some interesting discussion around that one for sure! Joel does a stellar Norm McDonald impression and the guys talk about some favorite comedians and being willing to ask for honest feedback even though you probably won't like it. The gang wrap up with the best part of their week, and Micah is stoked to sign up for Starlink internet and hopes Richard will do the same to cure his internet woes. The guys missed Ralls, and but pressed on like a Reacher should. Another amazing episode and one you will mark as your favorite. Don't forget to get your Far Reaches logo submissions in as well. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/micah87/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/micah87/support
Welcome to our first DisNOT episode! We are introducing a new theme once a month where we watch a movie from our childhoods that may seem like Disney, but DisNot (Get it??) For our first choice, Joel picked one of our favorites, “Anastasia” from 1997. Of course Joel picked one from the 90s. Both Joel and Avery absolutely love this movie and know it pretty much by heart. From the character development, to the background animation, to the music...it doesn’t get much better than this. Avery has some cute memories that she shares regarding one of the songs and Joel teaches us the dark reality and history of the story. So go ahead and “Russ-ian” to your living rooms if you haven’t seen this one, or want to see it again. We highly recommend it!

For our first December film we get in the Christmas spirit by going to a winter wonderland. Frozen was released in 2013 and was a smashing hit. If you knew any child or had a child in your life at that time, you definitely saw this movie. Both Joel and Avery were focused on school at the time and were a little late to the party seeing this movie. But once they did watch it, they realized why so many people were talking about it. The music is the BEST part of this movie. Every song is either funny, emotional, or powerful. How many people had “Let it go” stuck in their head for weeks after seeing it?? Also in this episode, Joel reads the original story that inspired Frozen and it is very, very different. Disney spent a long time developing this film, and in the end, all the effort and time spent on this film made it one of the most watched Disney movies ever!
In our seventh episode we jump forward to 1989 with another Princess tale, but maybe not as classic as the original fairy tales. The Little Mermaid has a similar plot as those films, but her struggle is not being human, which is a unique predicament. Both Joel and Avery love the music of this film and were quite familiar with the songs. Joel shares the origins of the story and once again, it is much darker than the Disney version. We both struggle with the idea of two people falling in love without ever speaking to each other and we discuss the complications and plot holes of this story.
So, is Medellin really ALL is ought to be? Both Joel and Andrew have lived in Medellin for nearly a decade now. Greetings listeners, It's finally time for us to sit down and talk about 2019. We took an extra few weeks in January this year to try and squeeze in a few extra games, so that we could truly feel satisfied with our lists. As always there are games that slip through the cracks or some that unfortunately fall short, so if there's anything particular that stood out to you in throughout the year that we didn't talk about then we'd love to hear from you. Both Joel and Kyran have compiled lists of ten games picked from the absolute best games they played in 2019, plus a few bonus shout outs at the start because they just can't help but celebrate as many games as possible. Thank you for following us through 2019 and we hope you look forward to an incredible 2020! If you want to get in touch with us, check out the links below! Samantha Geovjian Clarke welcomes Joel Campbell, co-host of the Michigan Robin podcast, to talk about climate change and how we learn to cope--and fight back--on a spiritual and emotional level. Both Joel and Samantha were raised religious, and we talk about how Christianity's relationship to the apocalypse both helped and hurt us in preparing for the impact of climate change.
Both Joel and Jonathan have been published and self-published quite a few books. In this episode, they dispel a lot of the myths people have about writing a book. Prepare to be ruined for book writing.

Can't a be a Christian and hate God's people?! Strong words! But Jesus speaks of a judgment at the end of the Tribulation period that teaches just that. People will be judged based on their treatment of the Jews. So this is the final lesson on the Olivet Discourse. This study started in Episode 5, with the Jews fully and finally rejecting Jesus. Jesus then told them that He would not return to the Temple until they welcomed Him back. His strong words led the disciples to ask three questions: When will these things be? What will be the sign of your coming? What will be the sign of the end of the age? Jesus answered these questions. He gave specific signs for each. In the last episode, we learned what will happen to Jews who reject Jesus. In today's episode, Jesus will focus His words on the judgment of gentiles, or non-Jews. Your Takeaway A believer must have the right attitude about the Jewish people. Judgment of the Nations Matthew 25:31-33 Jesus sets up His throne, most likely the Throne of David, and begins to sort people into two groups - the sheep and the goats A word to help us understand this passage is "nations" in verse 32. In this verse, the word "nations" means "gentiles." Joel 3:1-3 Both Joel 3 and Matthew 25 are speaking about the same event. Joel tells us more about the judgment. God judges the gentiles based on their treatment of the Jewish people. The Valley of Jehoshaphat could be the valley created when the Mount of Olives is split in two. Zechariah 14:4 In Matthew 25, what makes a sheep a sheep or a goat a goat? Are the Jews sheep and the gentiles goats? No. Both sheep and goats are gentiles. Here are three things to consider. Both sheep and goats are gentiles. People are sorted into these groups based on how they treated the Jewish people during the Tribulation period. They are condemned based on whether they are saved or not. So the first consideration comes from the correct understanding of the Joel passage and the Matthew passage. There is a key word in Matthew 25:40 that helps us understand. That word is "brethren" or "brothers". When Jesus uses "brethren" He means Jews. The Jewish people are His brothers. Jesus does not set up the throne to judge His brothers. He set up the throne to judge gentiles. The second consideration is that Jesus divided the gentiles based on how they treated the Jews. Look again at Matthew 25:35-40. All the wonderful things done for Jesus were actually done for the Jews. The third consideration is that people are never saved based on their deeds. They are saved based on the grace of God. See Ephesians 2:8-9. Note how in Matthew 25:37 Jesus refers to the sheep as "righteous". Believers have the righteousness of Christ. This righteousness is applied to a person when they believe on Jesus. Self Evaluation What is your attitude toward the Jewish people? Are you pro- or anti-Semitic? If you hate the Jewish people then you are in error. The Bible teaches three important facts about the Jews. The Jews are God's people. Look at Deuteronomy 7:6-8 God has promised to bless people who bless the Jews. See Genesis 12:2-3 Salvation comes from the Jews. Read John 4:22 I know that most Jews today are secular. I know that most do not believe the Bible, even the Old Testament. I know that some Jews, like all nationalities, do bad things. But none of that removes our responsibility. We are to love the Jewish people. And believers should be witnessing to the Jewish people. Closing Thoughts This study on the Olivet Discourse has focused on three things. I have repeatedly stressed the right relationship toward the Jewish people. That was a feature of this episode, episode 14, and episode 6. I have frequently asked you to share Jesus with your friends, neighbors, and loved ones. I hope you have done so. Time could be running out. I have shared the truth of Jesus with those who do not believe. I told you at the beginning of this study that I am a reluctant end-times preacher. I get no joy in it other than this - Jesus is coming again. For those who do not believe, the return of Jesus means judgment. For those who believe, His return means salvation. I hope you are one of the saved. I hope you have put your faith in Jesus. If not there is still time. Stop what you are doing at this moment and sit down in a quiet place. Share your heart with God. Ask God to show you your sin. Ask God to forgive you your sin. If you believe on Jesus - that He died for your sin and rose again - share that with God. Look at Romans 6:23. This verse teaches two important points. 1) The wages of sin is death. That means left to ourselves, our plans, our methods, it all leads to death. And not just any death, but eternal death or hell. 2) But the gift of God is eternal life. Eternal live is in Jesus Christ our Lord. Stop trusting in your ways. Those only lead to death. Trust in Jesus. Choose eternal life. Choose Jesus. Sign Up & Subscribe Sign up for our show notes. To begin with, every cup of coffee Panther serves is roasted on site, in small batches, each of which have their origin in farms personally-selected by the Pollocks for taste as well as and individuality. Both Joel and Leticia benefit from longstanding relationships with coffee producers throughout the world, and these friends and colleagues not only possess generations of knowledge and passion, but they produce some of the finest lots of coffee available anywhere. After the selection of green coffee beans (using a professional technique known as “cupping”), Joel uses his 20 years of experience to roast them, achieving correct development and caramelization of the sugars present within the coffee bean, without the conversion of these precious caramelized sugars into carbon, which can result in an ashy or smoky taste. Great care is taken to expose the magnificent natural sweetness and the most subtle flavor nuances often lost in the roasting process. Furthermore, Panther fields a team of extensively- and continuously-trained baristas to showcase these wonderful coffees and the people behind them. There’s good reason why Panther has become the go-to spot in Miami, and why its coffees and expertise are now being implemented from here to New York City; that’s because a Panther cup of coffee is just how great coffee is meant to be enjoyed.
