Today's Life's Black Belt is Amberly Lago. What an honor it was to interview her and have her share her amazing story with our listeners. The advice, inspiration and incredible strength she shows in this interview is priceless. This is a must listen to episode. Amberly was a professional dancer, fitness coach/model and even was featured in MC Hammer's "You Can't Touch this Video." Having grown up in Texas in a small town dancing and eventually teaching dance, Amberly wanted to pursue her dreams, so at 18 she packed up her belongings and moved to California. Determined to succeed she found a lot of work traveling around the world. Then tragedy struck. Her life was deeply altered and her world completely changed in May 2010. While riding her motorcycle in Woodland Hills, CA, she was hit by an SUV and thrown thirty feet down a busy street. Her right leg took the brunt of the impact and was crushed almost beyond repair. After an arduous recovery process, lengthy hospital stay and 34 surgeries, doctors were able to fuse her leg together and repair her severed femoral artery, despite the doctors original recommendation to amputate her leg. To make matters even worse Amberly was then diagnosed with a nerve disease called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (also known as RSD). This disease has been nicknamed "The Suicide Disease" because of the intense, chronic pain that it causes on a daily basis. Determined to turn her tragedy into triumph and along with the support of her family, Amberly authored her first book titled, "True Grit and Grace" which launched in 2017. She continues to spread her message with multiple public speaking and book signing events around the country, in front of thousands. Today's Life's Black Belt is US Army Veteran, Author and Public Speaker, Richard Kaufman.Richard is now known at "The Comeback Coach" for all the work he is doing with helping veterans and people in general to overcome their addictions to drugs and alcohol.Richard and I had a very open and honest conversation about how he finally got sober at the age of 20. He talks about growing up without a father, getting into trouble a lot as a child, getting hooked on drugs and alcohol by 12 years old and the battle to get and stay sober. He covers his many failures in life including dropping out of school, getting kicked out of the military and almost getting arrested for robbing a bar he worked at. Instead at that time the arresting officer gave him a choice of going to jail or going into 90 days of rehab. He chose the later and then went well past the 90 days and spent the next year in rehab, going almost every day.He got himself together but still battled his demons. Then September 11th took place and Richard has a very emotional story of how this tragic event changed his life forever. This was the catalyst that was needed for him to truly take control over his life. He rejoined the military and very quickly started receiving awards for being an incredible leader and soldier. He was in charge of many men and women on base and dedicated over 25 years to military service. A major injury in the military caused another setback that caused him to be medically discharged. ;Richard now is the General Managers of the most successful GNC in NJ. He spends his remaining time with public speaking, writing his new book and helping thousands to get control over their life and become the best version of themselves possible. He hosts weekly live videos on his Facebook page, with thousands of followers and also spends a lot of time bringing awareness to all of the daily suicides that are affecting our veterans and society in general. This truly is a story of perseverance in life and I hope you find his story as inspirational as I did.You can follow Richard online here:Website:https://thecomebackcoach.wordpress.com/Comeback Coach on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/206710673204283/Instagram:@comback_coachTwitter:https://twitter.com/Rickkaufman07------------------------------------------------------Follow Life's Black BeltsTwitter, Facebook and Instagram @lifesblackbeltsWebsitehttp://lifesblackbelts.buzzsprout.com

Today's Life's Black Belt is Ken Schumacher. Ken has a great story of perseverance and constantly pursuing your passion in life. How to never be afraid to fail and to always try new things in your life. He learned this through his involvement in school sports, where he wasn't the natural athlete but found success through his hard work and surrounding himself by people that were better then him. School sports led to a love for music, where he had a natural gift, and eventually joined a band where he was 6-8 years their junior. Again through this experience Ken discusses how not being the best motivated him to work harder and prove himself, which he did. Ken does discuss some challenges he had goofing off in school and almost failing out of high school. Fortunately a school administrator recognized he wasn't living up to his potential and he challenged Ken to get all A's in order to graduate, which he did. From then on he had a consistent love for learning and bettering himself. He tried many careers, lots of side projects and never truly found his passion. Then he met the love of his life and they were engaged a year later. Ken discusses what it takes to maintain a successful marriage and that life is not perfect. That it takes commitment, trust and understanding from both partners. He stood by his wife side as she battled and overcame cancer. This truly brought them closer together. Having move across the country together to Texas, Ken wanted to pursue his creativity and began a custom furniture company. The were many growing pains, he had to break away from his original partners and founded KS Woodcraft. They now have an expanding staff with sales Nation wide. With major clients such as AT&T, Starbucks and more Ken recently caught the attention of a high profile designer that will be featuring his work in 2019 on HGTV. It's a wonderful story of sticking with your dreams, working hard, not fearing failure and to always keep after it. Surrounding yourself with people who love and support you as well as mentors to help get you to the next level in life. I hope you find inspiration in his story and it helps impact your life for the better. Thank you for listening! If you’ve listened to past episodes, you know that my podcast focuses on an individuals story. How their life’s journey is similar to the martial artist’s journey towards Black Belt and beyond. Through these episodes I’ve highlighted stories that have shaped my guests into the people they are today. I thought it would be interesting to offer episodes in addition to our full interviews that go more into more detail of these impactful events. Stories of the past or present that substantially stand out and have a deep impact on your life. In martial arts these lessons often come from hard work, consistency, overcoming adversity and learning more about yourself in each class. As the instructor sees that you have learned the next set of lessons that they set out for you, that’s when you earn a stripe. Get enough stripes and you move up in rank. If you look at your timeline in life you can probably pick out multiple “bookmarks” of moments and memories that stand out to you. The moments that shape us, that we can remember in detail and that teach us the greatest lessons in life from good and bad experiences. These are “Life’s Stripes.” In these special episodes I will highlight specific stories on my guests or myself. My hope is that these stories will help inspire you to reflect on your own life’s experiences and the lessons you’ve learned from them. After all, your outloook on life is all about perspective. On this episode I highlight my knee injuries that led to my recent ACL and Meniscus surgery on July 11, 2018. What the experience has been like so far and how I’m mentally dealing with recovery and the future therapy and long road to recovery that awaits. I thought it would be interesting to not only feature stories of the past but also ones that are current as well. I hope you enjoy. Please leave feedback on the Facebook or Instagram page. Episode #1 - Introduction to Life's Black Belts

In this intro episode Eric discusses what the idea is for the Podcast "Life's Black Belts." Guests chosen to interview won't all be in the marital arts but rather how we view them as Black Belt's in life. That doesn't mean perfection just like in martial arts. The path to Black Belt has a beginning, lot's of challenges and adversity and the need to constantly learn and grow. To overcome failure and stay focused on your goal. Then when the goal is reached you need to continue your growth, there is no perfection. Just like in life. Celebrities are not the only people with interesting and inspiring stories. We want to highlight these everyday heroes. How have they overcome their challenges. What do they still struggle with. What are they proficient in. How they have created a successful business, marriage and more. The hope is to show how all of us have amazing stories that we can find inspiration in. Maybe it will help you to put your phone down and talk the the stranger across the room or on the bus. To take the time to get to know their story. I've put this off for too long out of fear of failure. This episode will be choppy and not my best. I hope to learn, grow and improve as a podcaster. I chose to launch now to remove my excuses and accept the hardest thing in any new goal is to just get started. So that's what I'm doing. I hope you join me on this journey. I have no idea where it will take me or a potential audience. But I'm excited to give it my all. I'd rather try and fail then have the fear to start in the first place. Stay tuned to our future interviews and episodes. Find us on Facebook, Instagram and more. Share with friends and if you like and listen, please give us a 5 star rating in the itunes store.
