While the 2008 financial crash turned out to be a reliable source of career lessons for many of our finance leader guests, Joel Campbell may be the first CFO to share with us a customer support lesson learned from the crisis. Back in 2006, Campbell, a seasoned treasury executive, had been recruited to help to build a robust treasury function for Ameriprise Financial, the recently spun-off financial planning division of American Express. “Those first 2 years were really about finishing this spin-off process, but the day that's burned infamously into my mind is September 16, 2008,” remembers Campbell, who reports that this was the day when a money market fund widely used by Ameriprise customers “broke the buck.” “It became the first money market fund in investing history to let its net asset value drop below a dollar—and this had just never happened before,” continues Campbell, who adds that the fund served more than 300,000 Ameriprise customers who had routinely deposited their excess cash into it with the intent of using the proceeds to pay a variety of expenses, from mortgages to college tuitions. Not more than 10 days after the fund “broke the buck,” Ameriprise's management team committed $400 million from its own balance sheet to support those customers impacted by the fund's sudden collapse. Besides underlining the prioritization of customer care, Campbell notes, the experience also shaped his perspectives on treasury and finance. “It helped me to think about how to look forward,' remarks Campbell, who continues to laud Ameriprise's response, “and I'm saying ‘look forward' with regard not just to what's happening in a business but also to trying to understand where the market is headed. It's all about reading the signs so that you can step back and make sure that you're making the right decisions from a risk or liquidity standpoint to be able to both run your business and support your customers in the right way.” Says Campbell: “It's the response that sticks with me. It was how the executive team quickly pivoted and said, ‘We need to take care of the customer, period. Full stop.'” –Jack Sweeney

New Zealand's Fifa World Cup dream is over – and this is going to hurt for quite some time.Of all the ways to lose an Fifa Intercontinental World Cup playoff, this was undoubtedly the worst.Even Peru's fate the night before in a penalty shootout would have possibly been better than this scenario.Never has a New Zealand side played so well on the world stage and got so little, as they couldn't convert numerous chances, after Costa Rica's soft third minute goal to Joel Campbell, to lose 1-0.They could have won; they probably should have won; they outclassed their opponents for long periods but ended up with nothing. The All Whites were given no favours by the officials, with a first half Chris Wood goal controversially chalked off via a VAR intervention, while substitute Kosta Barbarouses was sent off within minutes of coming on (though that looked a correct decision).Former All White Jacob Spoonley joined Sportstalk.LISTEN ABOVE

AL and Jules join Darren Campbell at Shrewsbury Prison to catch up with him. Not since the Biscuit first launched have we spoken to him, so it was nice to check in and see how things have been. Well the end of 2019 and of course 2020 have not been favourable to most in Shrewsbury. Joel has felt the wrath too but instead of burying his head in the sand, he shows drive and determination to come at things from different angles. An "entrepreneur in the true sense of the word" Joel calls it, someone who can quickly adapt and make positive changes to the environment around him. While the Prison cells were firmly closed during lock-down, Joel, Stacey and Lauren have been working on online shows that give people the opportunity to check in with the team and snoop in on cameras to look for ghosts. This has been hugely successful. Joel has been a good friend to us at the Biscuit and we reminisce about the good, atmospheric times we've had working at the prison (AL's was mostly while he was wearing a wig and make-up!) Originally the Prison was supposed to re-open on the 20th of June but could not for reasons out of Joel's control. So disregard anything that mentions the Prison opening on this episode. Kick in Russ – Die WM 2018 – meinsportpodcast.de

Panel: Pasha Hajian, Babak Golriz and Daniel Karbassiyoon. This is part one of our interview with Daniel Karbassiyoon. Karbassiyoon is a former professional footballer with Arsenal who was forced to retire at 22 due to recurring knee injuries. Soon after hanging up his boots, he was hired as a scout for Arsenal and spent 7 years scouting the Americas full time before recently moving back to London. Despite his short-lived career as a player, Danny made three appearances for the first team in 2004, becoming the first American to score for the Gunners when he scored the winner against Manchester City in the League Cup. He later went on loan to Ipswich Town before signing for Burnley Football Club in 2005. In 2007, Danny re-signed for Arsenal as a scout and has since been credited for finding Gedion Zelalem and Joel Campbell. The second part of this interview will be released soon.
