Graham MacKenzie on taking Scottish folk music to the world with Assynt

Streets of Your Town

On my recent travels through the UK and Ireland for Streets of Your Town, I was amazed to find how strong the cross pollination between Australian and Indigenous music and Gaelic traditions were, and how it continues to evolve. While I was in Glasgow, I was lucky enough to meet Graham Mackenzie from award winning instrumental folk trio Assynt. Sitting in his Glasgow living room, his fiddle sits between us, never far from his thoughts, as we chat about the band's recent Australian tour. The band launched in 2018, and had long held aspirations to play in Australia. Even the pandemic - while delaying their plans - couldn't hold them back for long, and last year they came to the Woodford Folk Festival to perform and do workshops. The trio also toured down the East Coast on a hectic trip for the Festival of Small Halls.Inspired by the great piping, fiddle and Gaelic traditions of the Highlands where he grew up in Inverness, McKenzie's self-penned melodies for Assynt have a contemporary edge while rooted in centuries-long musical traditions.Graham tells us on Streets of Your Town how he is relieved to find their workshops and performances both in Scotland and Australia are now filled with young people embracing their fiddles and traditional Celtic instruments, and wanting to pick up tips. One of his favourite aspects of coming to Australia was hearing First Nations performers at Woodford Folk Festival, seeing it as a rare opportunity for two age-old cultures to learn from each other. For more shownotes - please go to my substack for this episode at soyt.substack.com

Trigger warning: Child sexual abuse We've said before that survivors of child sexual abuse often end up more resilient than others, purely because of what they have had to live through.Well Malika Reese is possibly the purest example of that, because not only did she survive abuse as a child, she also went on to face her perpetrator and see him charged, survive a robbery and survive having a car run her and her baby down. Malika Reese was born in California in the 70's, to a White writer and a Black writer. As an emcee, speaker, writer, musician and storyteller, Malika has been performing for over 30 years. Thousands of fantastic individuals and families are truly dedicated to a way of life that in certain respects has a lot to offer. Their positive experiences, however, don't negate the stories of those who have come out with less positive things to say. Falling in love with writing letters again at the Woodford Folk Festival Lettering House

With all the agitation and conflict in the world at the moment - I thought what we need on Streets of Your Town to start this year - is whimsy. Something to make us smile and stir a sense of childlike awe in us again. And so off I meandered in Mildred the Cantankerous Kombi to the Woodford Folk Festival. It's on every year in the foothills of Queensland's Sunshine Coast hinterland helping hippies and hippies at heart to spread harmony and see in the New Year with three minutes of silent contemplation. The festival attracts more than 130,000 people to the pop-up town of Woodfordia on the site of a former dairy farm, making it the largest gathering of artists and musicians in Australia. Amidst this glorious muddy throng of people and throbbing music is a contemplative corner of Woodfordia called the Lettering House. It's where festival goers can go back to times gone by, and connect to their fellow Woodfordians the old fashioned, non-digital way - by writing a letter or typing it on an old fashioned type-writer. A team of Woodfordian posties search out the identify of each letter recipient, often based on the vaguest of addresses and identifies, then get on their bikes to find them and deliver the letter by hand, or notify the recipient by text that they have a letter to pick up. So sit back, and let's ponder the magic of the Lettering House through the words of Postal Clerk Aaron, who explains how they spread their little bit of writing wonder through the festival. Lil Fee has been a professional musician for over 25 years, touring the country and releasing eight self-penned albums. She has achieved many milestones throughout her career, including being the first woman to perform at the East Coast Blues Festival and programming the Woodford Folk Festival for many years. However, Lil Fee's life took a sudden turn in 2010 when she moved to the Northern Rivers and had a near-death experience after falling off a loading dock. This incident left her unable to speak or write, and she was forced to rewire her brain. As she recovered, Lil Fee was introduced to early years music through a program called Rapa Daisy, and this sparked a passion in her for working with special needs children. For the next ten years, Lil Fee ran an incursions business on the border of Queensland and New South Wales, teaching a thousand children a week and driving 700 kilometers a week. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought her business to a halt, and Lil Fee decided to pursue her dream of working in family daycare. Moving to Tasmania to reduce her expenses, Lil Fee began connecting with family daycare providers online and developing her business. She has been able to bring her passion for music education to children in family daycare settings, offering a unique and personalized experience that is not possible in traditional long daycare centers. Lil Fee's journey is a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit. Despite facing many challenges throughout her career, she has never given up on her passion for music and education. Her story inspires anyone who has faced adversity and refused to let it defeat them. Lil Fee is a talented and passionate musician and educator with an incredible career journey. This episode of Streets of Your Town comes to you (again!) from the streets of the Woodford Folk Festival, where the sublime singing of Punjabi Australian singer and dancer Parvyn Kaur Singh drew me into her orbit. As it turns out Parvyn had just completed a cross country adventure from her South Australian home, bringing all her family up in her Subaru wagon so she could perform at the Festival. She brought her new solo expression to Woodford audiences for the first time, synthesising a lifetime of dance and song into into her debut record ‘Sa'. Her eclectic influences range from electronica and jazz to her background in Sikh devotional music and her training in Indian classical music and dance.  But while Parvyn was one of the farthest flung artists performing at this year's festival, she's actually also one of the longest participating - having come to the Woodford Folk Festival since she was a child. As Parvyn says - she's been coming to Woodford before it was known as Woodford. And as she tells us on Streets of Your Town, Parvyn feels grateful to be giving back to the Woodford Folk Festival post pandemic, just as her solo career is taking off, having been featured in Rolling Stone India. Á Tea For Two with Áine Tyrrell

The Á Tea For Two Podcast is all about bringing you the conversations that happen over cups of teas between two creatives. There are creatives like me who are out front of stage, whose name is their art and I have brought you a year of artists like this so far. Our art is very visible and you know when you are in the presence of it because our music, artworks, poetry is in your earbuds and eye holes. But there are a whole layer of creatives in that process that get us out front and centre that unless you become aware of, you may not know exist, yet their practice and mastery of skills is just as intentional and deep as ours. They dress in black and hide behind desks, iPads, computers, lighting rigs. They may get a clap at the end of the night if us performers remember, but in general they aren't who a crowd remembers going to see. They are an army of unseen arts workers that have the ability to lift a show in ways not many of us are even conscious of.In my continued conversations with creatives, I wanted to bring you one of the most creative souls who truly makes not only my job but so many other touring bands and recording artists jobs next level amazing.  I call him my bandmate even though he is not technically visibly on stage with me, but he is. He is very much there and I am always grateful. He hears, observes and sees things that I can't pick up on, it's not in my skills set, but learning from him has been a great gift over the past 3 years of touring. Over many cups of teas with James Boundy I have learned the art behind what he does. From the very first time he mixed a show of mine at Mullum Fest in 2017, I have loved the feeling he creates on stage and in a venue, but I didn't know the nuts and bolts of the intention behind all that until I started asking more questions. As music lovers, I think it is so enriching to understand more about this side of your listening experience. I love all the nooks and crannies Boundy brought us on through this podcast episode from bass sounds, to ear hairs, to Binaural recording, to mental health on the road for crew... this is an episode worth pouring a big cuppa for. ABOUT JAMES BOUNDY: Boundy is a free lance sound engineer based in Byron Bay. He has had over 15 year experience as a live and studio engineer for bands such as (Dune Rats, Tora, Parcels, The Bird, Last Dinosaurs and many other international and national acts) and run festivals stages from Woodford Folk Festival to St Kilda Festival to Mullum Music Festival. He is a tertiary sound engineer educator and an audio consultant. Boundy's reputation for enhancing the creative environment as well as pulling great sounds make him a valuable addition to any project in either an engineering or production capacity.  website: http://boundysound.com/Support the show

They initially pursued a very folky - perhaps even twee - sound on their first two EPs, 2008's "Dead Loss" and 2009's "Different in the Distance". Their later releases explored a more atmospheric indie rock dynamic, as heard on their two albums, 2011's "Take Your Light" and 2013's "Are You Life". Little Scout were a locally popular band in their time, and were able to rack up many major support slots for international touring bands including Belle and Sebastian, Sharon Van Etten and Placebo. For most of the band's life, Tickle and Elliott were joined by Miro Mackie on the drums. Other members throughout their history included Charles Sale, Nick Smethurst, Shem Allen, Laura Kovic, Michael Pringle, and Tickle's sister, Kirsty. While the band officially broke up in 2015, the core partnership of Tickle and Elliott survived into subsequent band PYNES. The two also play in other bands including Holiday Party, Relay Tapes and Rival Territory. This set from the Woodford Folk Festival was one of the last Little Scout ever played. We were fortunate enough to unearth this desk mix from the archives, recorded by the 4ZZZ team who covered the Festival that year. Queensland singer-songwriter Briannah Grace is stepping into an anticipated new venture inspired during the crazy changes caused by Covid-19. ‘If I Had To Guess' is a catchy, fun, and upbeat urban cowgirl pop song. It is a sassy take on the heartache and denial everyone faces while getting over someone you still miss. Rae Leigh sits down for a live chat in the Gold Coast studio to talk about her new path with the origioanl work and what inspires her. We were suprised at what we found out about this inspirational women and artist. Briannah spent 2020 kicking huge goals, that launched her in the award-winning sibling duo as half of ‘Oh Harlow', who in 2020 won the Queensland Music Award for ‘Country Song of the Year', starred in the Top 24 on X Factor 2016, performed at Woodford Folk Festival, Groundwater Country Music Festival and Gympie Music Muster four years in a row. Oh Harlow's debut single ‘Give It A Miss' hit the charts at #3 on The Music Network Australian Country Airplay Charts, #1 on the iTunes Country Singles Chart and the sisters performed around Australia and toured internationally to Japan. Taking with her the hard work and determination that it took to create that success, this short but mighty go-getter has spent the pandemic songwriting, learning guitar, photography and building a community while live-streaming her music on the online platform ‘Twitch' when not performing due to the pandemic. After six years of touring, songwriting and performing in her duo, Briannah Grace is fronting her own debut single ‘If I Had To Guess', recorded at Brisbane's Red Engine Recording Studio, and produced by Andrew Cochrane. To co-incide with the single release, Briannah Grace will be performing at Gympie Music Muster in August. Connect with Briannah: Facebook Twitter YouTube Spotify Instagram Twitch

Captain Dreamboat: Live at Yonder Festival, Mary Valley, 30 November 2019 Captain Dreamboat began as an idea, a nickname, and a tattoo. Singer Ofa Fanaika - whose other project C H U R C H was featured in episode 349 of Live Delay - played in reggae/dub band Chocolate Strings throughout the 2000s and always had a dream of forming a soul and R'n'B band out of jazz musicians. At some point she was given the nickname "Captain Dreamboat" and she tattooed the name on her arm as a commitment to one day get that other band together. A year later, in 2012, the dream came to life. Since then Captain Dreamboat has been a staple of West End's music community, and have played festivals including Jungle Love, Island Vibe and the Woodford Folk Festival. As Australia recovers from natural disasters, with drought and bushfires destroying swathes of land across the country, many people are wondering how they can help native animals caught up in the aftermath. But the question of whether it is ever ok to feed native animals, is a controversial topic that is highly divisive among conservationists. To help people through this dilemma, Griffith University Environmental Science Professor Darryl Jones has written a new book, Feeding the Birds at Your Table, as a guide to what is nutritionally appropriate for native animals, and what foods to avoid. And as he explains on this episode of Remarkable Tales, speaking to me at the Woodford Folk Festival, one of the most common foods given to native birds, is particularly harmful for their health.

Accomplished musician and small business owner Lachy Doley is a world-leading expert on the Hammond Organ. He's also Jimmy Barnes's keyboard player and he played for Powderfinger back in the day. He's no slouch! In this very honest and open interview he shares how he makes a living from one of the world's toughest industries.   A little bit more about Lachy Doley … Righto, so a few years ago, this fellow by the name of Lachy Doley sent me an email (out of the blue) saying he listened to my show when touring, and that he loved it so much that he'd gone ahead and wrote, sang and recorded a new intro and music bed for me. I took a listen, loved it, and have been using it ever since.  I then rang to thank him and offer to get him some work. He politely replied that he was busy enough as he was Jimmy Barnes's keyboard player. For oversea's listeners, I'll explain who Jimmy Barnes is during the interview, suffice to say he's no slouch … and neither is Lachy. In fact, he's one of the world's leading Hammond Organ aficionados.   “My ultimate goal is to win people over so that they'll have enough of a connection to you the person or artists that they'll want to buy your music, merch, tickets to gigs … as soon as you put out anything they just want to get it. That's what I'm always aiming for.”    - Lachy Doley   So why am I interviewing a well-established musician on this show? And why are they even listening to a show like this? Because Lachy is a small business owner just like you ... and whilst he's played with some of Australia's biggest bands including Barnsey and Powderfinger … he also has his own band and he constantly has to hustle for live gigs, to sell more CDs, merch … put simply, he too has to make a living.   Now this is a very honest chat in which we cover: How he built his profile How he manages to bring his A-game to every gig Why he sent a heart-felt email to his listeners and what impact it had Plus he talks about the multitude of revenue streams he's created in order to make a living    As a wannabe rockstar myself, I started off by asking Lachy to indulge me by explaining what it's like to walk out on stage to tens of thousands of screaming fans …   Here's what caught my attention from my chat with Lachy Doley: I loved Lachy's honesty and transparency. When was the last time you let your guard down in front of a customer, employee or supplier? Would you even dare? I love the fact that Lachy has multiple revenue streams including an e-Course, (print on-demand merch). I've linked to both in the show notes. And I love the fact that he's segmenting his email list when people sign up.   What was your main take-away from this chat?   “I was so inspired by Powderfinger and their work ethic … they were a huge democracy. They were always doing meetings, they were just on to it all the time.” - Lachy Doley   Here's that email Lachy sent back in 2017 THE TRUTH ABOUT MY CAREER, FAMILY AND THE RELEASE OF MY NEW ALBUM #LOVELIGHT I'm not gonna lie. I'm still doing it tough at the moment with all the shit that went down last year regarding the cancelled 6 week Europe tour with Glenn. So more than just letting you guys know that the preorders are open for the new album, I wanted to ask you all a few questions and tell you bit about what's going on here. Firstly I gotta thank all you guys once again for being such a great support to me, my music and ultimately my family. I started recording and performing as the Lachy Doley Group in 2010 and apart from Jimmy Barnes I haven't really done any work as a session player with anyone else since. Playing with Jimmy Barnes has pretty much gotten me through these years. The Lachy Doley Group has only cost me money. like lots of money! And that's not even mentioning the time I spend working on it. I mean I've been working my fucking ass off, every spare second I've had for the last 6 years to get it to where it's at and it's talking it's toll on my family, myself and my mental health. I mean I: Write the music (time) Perform the music (time) Record the music (time and heaps of money) Mix the music (time) Master the music (time) Then I market the album (stupid amounts of time and money) I also pay a publicist to market the album (I can't say exactly the amount, but it's thousands) I send the albums off to radio, blogs and magazines around the world (stupid amounts of time and money, especially overseas radio stations, everyone wants a physical copy and postage is nuts) This album makes 4 Studios albums and 2 Live albums plus a DVD since 2010 (WTF?) I book all the shows , except overseas (so much time) I promote the shows (stupid amounts of time and money) I video a lot of the shows (so much money and setup) I edit the videos of the shows (so much time) I promote them on Facebook (So much time and money) I built and update my website (Lots of time, some money for hosting) I design all the artwork and posters (time) I tour manager everything. Which I'm absolutely hopeless at. (time) Public Liability Insurance (money) My Europe tour of 2015 ended up costing me $6000 dollars. Having said that. My Europe 2016 tour broke even. So that was good :-) I ENGAGE WITH ALMOST EVERYONE WHO CONTACTS ME on fb, email, twitter and alike. But now I've got over 28,000 Facebook likes, this adds up to ten's of hours a week just replying to people but unfortunately doesn't do anything for my hopeless financial situation. I give out so much advice to musicians via comments and private messages it's bordering on crazy. But I have to say I really do love this part of everything. It's just so many hours. On top of this I haul around a stupidly OVERSIZED HAMMOND ORGAN and WHAMMY CLAV all the around the world and then put in every single bit of energy and conviction into every performance, I feel like I'm gonna faint sometimes. Not to mention the cost of maintenance and petrol on my van when it's running over 15,0000 kms a year SO…. when you find yourself home after driving 12 hours straight from an incredible week away playing 5 awesome shows to standing ovations at Woodford Folk Festival but you simply can't pay your mortgage and feed the family that week. It's time to really think hard about WHETHER THIS IS ALL WORTH IT. Sadly, There's no work with Jim at the moment as he's doing his book tour and the small amount he has coming up is directly when I've booked my new Album tour. BAD TIMING Don't get me wrong I know I've achieved so much and I know I'm a great product. Infant everyday someone comments to me about how well I'm doing or how I'm just killing it at the moment. This makes me feel good for second but because I know that it's totally not the case it really brings me down further. I'm still flat broke, actually broker than ever. I'm seriously this close to just giving up and finding a real job. But I've got to see this new album and it's tour through.  So i wanted to ask a few things: If you do enjoy my music, watch my videos, learn from my videos or get something good from what I do, would you consider helping me to keep them coming by becoming a member of my VIP membership group. It's a bit like CROWDFUNDING by a more spread out and sustainable version. All the info is here at www.lachydoley.com/vip please watch the video and see if it's something you'd like to be apart of :-) Otherwise if you're planning to buy a copy or preorder of the new album at some point. Would you mind doing it now as I'll get the funds almost immediately AND it'll help my chances of charting on the week it's released. You can do that here www.lachydoley.com/bandcamp If you're in Australia, Please come to one or more of my shows and book early so the venues don't freak about whether anyones coming. All the shows are listed here www.lachydoley.com/shows SHARE AND TAG THE HELL out of my videos and posts :-) Sorry for the depressing tone of this email but it's just where I am right now. soil regeneration: put all your organic material directly onto soil, cover with mulch, monitor the soil- watch the mycelium grow & observe the broader impact- can use human waste also - Sandra is a big fan of poo!- just do one experiment for 6 months- every life form requires food, water, and shelter: if you give it these, you can't go wrong- not just creating life but also creating habitats for that life- Sandra has a Facebook page where she would be happy to see your citizen science projects.  Healing through fungi - Paul Stamets magic mushroom experience- went from being a forester to preserving forests because of that experience- not all benefits of mycology can be scientifically quantified- psychiatry article: cases of micro-doses of psyllocibin to treat mental illnesses, makes us childlike and therefore emotionally connected to ourselves, and allows for healing- the experience cured Paul Stamets stutter- becoming a scientifically studied process- starts with personal experiences, which is why citizen science is so important  Discussion of further projects - Ben: countertop system - air filtration through plants- Sandra: growing bowls / cups of oyster mushrooms, feeding it wood-chips / sugar cane mulch/coffee- possibilities of mycelium growing replacements for many common products e.g. styrofoam, leather- experiments in making a filter out of mushroom mycelium to absorb oil spills- cleansing environments so next generation are not born with diseases caused by toxins- Sandra believes this will happen through citizens doing their part, not waiting for governments- experiment in your own backyard & your own kitchen, and pass it onto a friend! Closing remarks - Sex On Toast: Sex On Toast are a funked up lot, specialising in overblown choreography and onstage antics, these new-jack swingers feel ripped straight from another era. Last month saw the release of their brand new single, “Oh Loretta”, a throwback track that could have been recorded in the 70’s, but is nevertheless yesterday fresh. Equal parts righteous and ridiculous, Sex On Toast are known for their raucous and engaging live shows. These Festival regulars, have performed on numerous stages across Australia, from Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Adelaide Fringe, to Apollo Bay Music Festival and Woodford Folk where this set was recorded. Live from the Bazaar stage and running through the new year, this is Sex On Toast. Recorded & Mixed by John Robinson. Recorded at Woodford Folk Festival, 27th December, 2014. The Eagle Junction: Local band The Eagle Junction are hard at work at the the moment, touring their particular brand of blues pop, kitsch-rock around Australia. After taking home the prize for Best Original Song at this year’s Qube Effect with their track, Your Face Ruins My Day, the band have gone on to release their debut LP. The set was recorded on April 18th of this year for Street Soundzzz, as part of 4ZZZ’s youth week celebrations. Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at 4ZZZ Car Park on the 18th of April, 2015.
