On today's show, artisan craftsman Chelsea Miller tells the story of how and why she got inspired to work with metal and wood - combining art, story-telling and re-purposed family farm tools into beautiful and functional handcrafted knives. Chelsea discusses some of the challenges she's faced being a woman in a male-dominated industry and provides an on-the-ground opinion of post-pandemic New York. GUEST OVERVIEW: Chelsea Miller is an artist and a craftsman who makes unique knives from reclaimed materials. She grew up on a farm in Vermont, where she learned to appreciate the beauty and utility of nature. She moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting, but found her true passion in working with metal and wood after returning to Vermont to care for her father, who was also a knife maker, and discovering his workshop full of old tools and files. She decided to transform these discarded items into something new and valuable, and thus began her journey as a knife maker. Chelsea's knives are hand-forged from high carbon steel horse files, which give them a distinctive texture and edge. The handles are made from spalted maple and apple wood, which are native to Vermont and have natural patterns and colors. She shapes each knife by hand, following her intuition and creativity. Chelsea is not just a knife maker, but a storyteller. She infuses each knife with a piece of her history, her family, and her environment. She hopes that her knives will inspire others to create their own stories, and to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship that goes into making something by hand. Chelsea's knives have gained recognition and admiration from chefs, restaurateurs, and home cooks alike. Her knives are used in some of the finest restaurants in New York City, such as Eleven Madison Park, where they are part of the tableside cheese service. She also sells her knives online, through her website, ChelseaMillerKnives.com.

It's been 10 years since the Black Lives Matter was founded in response to the acquittal of the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Kai Wright speaks with organizer Chelsea Miller about the impact the movement has had on a generation of young people. She makes the case for why we must keep telling the story of Black life and death in America and saying the names of those killed as a result of police violence. Plus, in partnership with New Yorker Radio Hour, Kai discusses the impact of the movement with Samuel Sinyangwe, a policy analyst with Mapping Police Violence & Police Scorecard, Anya Bidwell, an attorney for the Institute of Justice and the Federalist Society, and Mike White, professor of criminology and criminal justice at Arizona State University. They look back on some of the policy changes that have been implemented to reduce use of force by police and whether they've been successful.   Tell us what you think. Ask a group of highschoolers, “who was Trayvon Martin?” and you'll see some tragically blank stares. But replace that with “George Floyd”, and you'll see heads nod.
