Siang Lu is the author of The Whitewash, a tremendous mockumentary style exploration of the movie industry, which won an ABIA for best Audiobook. Siang is also the co-creator of The Beige Index, your definitive guide to how white your movie viewing really. Siang's new novel is Ghost Cities. Xiang is working as a translator at Sydney's Chinese Consulate when it's discovered he really doesn't speak much Chinese. This is considered a less than desirable outcome and Xiang is both fired and culturally shamed for his lack of national pride. If that wasn't insult enough Xiang soon discovers he is going viral in mainland China as the #BadChinese. Something of a cultural parody of the diaspora population. His digital notoriety sees him drawn into the orbit of the megalomaniacal director/entrepreneur Baby Bao. Xiang is quickly whisked off to the Ghost City of Port Man Tou, where he is set to star in the city wide production of Baby Bao's simulation of reality. A movie within a city within a movie that is aiming to create an economy so circular it might just get vertigo. Siang Lu's debut The Whitewash set the stage for his flair for cultural observation and a shrewd type of observational humour that honestly reminded me of the late great Terry Pratchett. Xiang is a kind of everyman who is constantly off-balance in the funhouse mirror world of Baby Bao, who is himself a chimeric beast of modern globalist enterprise. Now if this isn't enough Ghost Cities establishes that the whole enterprise of Port Man Tou is a strange echo of a far distant Emperor and his quest to build a city and a dynasty that will carry his legacy into perpetuity. Ghost Cities is a novel that offers many rewards for both the casual or the committed reader. Lu's writing is effortlessly clever and glides from misadventure to catastrophe, challenging the reader to root for both Xiang and Baby Bao despite their clearly being at odds (and Baby Bao truly seeming like a monster). This reading easily offers up the kind of blockbuster Baby Bao would love to make. In the paralleled storylines, the clever mix of language and the intricately woven plotting we can also find a intellectually stimulating read; a kind of arthouse cinema for the soul that equally Baby Bao would also like to make (I mean he has taken over a whole city and is simultaneously filming all its inhabitants to film multiple movies at once). Ghost Cities is a marvel and beyond all that just tremendously fun to read. Go check out Ghost Cities from Siang Lu. Loved this review? On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 11 at 6:45 a.m. CT: Residents in Gaza are facing an imminent loss of electricity as fuel supplies run dangerously low in the sealed-off territory. Israeli airstrikes left entire neighborhoods demolished Wednesday, and hospitals in the Gaza Strip are struggling to treat the injured with dwindling medical supplies. The war has claimed more than 2,200 lives on both sides and is expected to escalate. The weekend attack that Hamas said was retribution for worsening conditions for Palestinians under Israeli occupation has inflamed Israel's determination to crush the group's hold in Gaza. Foreign governments are tallying their dead and missing as the latest Israel-Palestinian war stretches into its fifth day. MARRAKECH, Morocco — United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says the war between Israel and Hamas militants poses “additional concerns” to the American economy, but she still expects inflation can be contained without causing a recession. BRUSSELS (AP) — Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has joined a meeting of more than 50 defense leaders from around the world to make a personal pitch for military aid. Political support in the U.S. for the war has been lagging and allies are under pressure to send weapons to bolster Israel in its war with Hamas. It is the first time Zelenskyy has attended the NATO meeting in Brussels person. His presence underscores growing concerns about cracks in what has been staunch international backing for Kyiv in its war against Russia's invasion, and worries that Ukrainian forces haven't made measurable progress in the counteroffensive as winter closes in. The new Mideast war has complicated matters and has created competition for weapons and funding. High school students' scores on the ACT college admissions test have dropped to their lowest in more than three decades, showing a lack of student preparedness for college-level coursework, according to the nonprofit organization that administers the test. Scores have been falling for six consecutive years, but the trend accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students in the class of 2023 whose scores were reported Wednesday were in their first year of high school when the virus reached the U.S. The average ACT composite score for U.S. students was 19.5 out of 36. Last year, the average score was 19.8. Dorothy Hoffner, a 104-year-old Chicago woman whose recent skydive could see her certified by Guinness World Records as the oldest person to ever jump from a plane, has died. Hoffner's close friend, Joe Conant, says she was found dead Monday morning by staff at the Brookdale Lake View senior living community. Conant says Hoffner had an amazing energy and “she just kept going.” On Oct. 1, Hoffner made a tandem skydive at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, Illinois, that could land her a world record. Conant says he's working to ensure that Guinness World Records certifies Hoffner posthumously as the world's oldest skydiver. NEW YORK (AP) — A new indictment filed Tuesday charges U.S. Rep. George Santos with stealing the identities of donors to his campaign and then using their credit cards to ring up tens of thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges. Prosecutors say some of that stolen money ended up in his own bank account. The 23-count indictment replaces one filed earlier against the New York Republican charging him with embezzling money from his campaign and lying to Congress about his wealth, among other offenses. Santos told reporters at the U.S Capitol he had no comment on the superseding indictment. The Rangers advance to the ALCS, awaiting the winner of the Twins-Astros series, one of the Vikings' top receivers will be out for a while with an injury, and the much-anticipated debut of Blackhawks center Connor Bedard includes an assist and a victory. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is confirming that U.S. citizens are among the hostages captured by Hamas in this weekend's attack on Israel and he condemned the militant group for “sheer evil” for its shocking multipronged attack on Israel launched from the Gaza Strip. Hundreds of civilians have been killed, including at least 14 American citizens. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke by phone earlier Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the situation on the ground. Biden outlined the actions he and other allies have taken to support Israel in the aftermath of the attack and expressed his horror about “sickening” reports of torture inflicted by militants on innocent civilians. The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, says it is trying to take action on a flood of posts sharing graphic media, violent speech and hateful conduct about the latest war between Israel and Hamas. X says it's treating this crisis with its highest level of response. But outside watchdog groups and a European Union official say misinformation about the war abounds on the platform that billionaire Elon Musk bought last year. Musk himself has recommended unreliable accounts posting about the war. And his job cuts since taking over Twitter last year have left fewer people responsible for taking action on posts that violate the platform's policies. TORONTO (AP) — General Motors and the union representing Canadian auto workers have reached a tentative contract agreement, ending a strike that began just after midnight. About 4,300 striking workers at two GM factories and a parts warehouse will return to work Tuesday afternoon and will vote on the three-year deal later. Lana Payne, president of the Unifor union, said in a statement that, when faced with the strike, GM had no choice but to follow a pattern agreement reached earlier with Ford. GM said it reached the three-year agreement around 1 p.m. Tuesday after workers went on strike at the Ontario facilities. GM said the deal recognizes employee contributions with significant pay and benefit increases and additional job security. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The White House is condemning a violent crash at the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco that ended with police fatally shooting a man. The man created a chaotic scene Monday when he rammed a car into the consulate's lobby. A White House official said Tuesday that U.S. government officials have been in contact with Chinese foreign ministry officials in the aftermath of the crash. The official was not authorized to comment and spoke on the condition of anonymity. San Francisco police had not released the driver's identity or a possible motive as of Tuesday morning. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former baseball MVP Steve Garvey is joining the race to succeed the late California Sen. Dianne Feinstein. The Republican Garvey gives his party a splash of star quality on the ballot in a heavily Democratic state where the GOP hasn't won a U.S. Senate race in 35 years. Garvey signaled in a video that he would lean toward the political center, saying: "I never played for Democrats or Republicans or independents. I played for all of you.” As a Republican, he starts as a longshot. Democrats hold every statewide office. Leading candidates include Democratic U.S. Reps. Barbara Lee, Katie Porter and Adam Schiff. NEW YORK (AP) — Evidence shown at former President Donald Trump's New York civil business fraud trial shows that he signed a 1994 document that gave the true size of the New York penthouse that was listed later as far larger on his financial statements. The evidence appeared in an email attachment shown during testimony Tuesday from Allen Weisselberg, the former finance chief of Trump's company. James' lawsuit alleges that Weisselberg engineered Trump's financial statements to meet his demands that they show increases in his net worth and signed off on lofty valuations for assets despite appraisals to the contrary. Trump denies any wrongdoing. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $1.73 billion after no one matched the game's six numbers and won the giant prize. The winning numbers announced Monday night are: 16, 34, 46, 55, 67 and the Powerball 14. There has been no winner for 35 consecutive drawings. The scarcity of Powerball jackpot winners reflects the game's long odds of 1 in 292.2 million. The $1.73 billion prize is for a sole winner who is paid through an annuity, with annual checks over 30 years. Most jackpot winners opt for cash, which for the next drawing Wednesday night would be an estimated $756.6 million. MOSCOW (AP) — Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained in Russia on espionage charges, has lost an appeal to be released from jail, meaning he will stay behind bars at least until Nov. 30. Gershkovich was arrested in the city of Yekaterinburg while on a reporting trip in late March. The 31-year-old U.S. citizen and his employer deny the allegations, and the U.S. government declared him to be wrongfully detained. Russian authorities have not provided any evidence to support the espionage charges. Gershkovich is the first American reporter to face espionage charges in Russia since 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB. In an AP interview, Matthew Levitt with The Washington Institute for Near East Policy explains the history and focus of Hamas. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. It's been an extraordinary evening in UK politics, with some pundits saying it looks like a "death spiral" for Prime Minister Liz Truss, who's been in the job for just six weeks. There was total chaos in the Commons during a vote on fracking with reports of Tory MPs being "manhandled" into the voting chamber. The drama continued when Home Secretary Suella Braverman resigned over two data breaches, launching an attack on Liz Truss' premiership in her resignation letter. She's reportedly been followed by Chief Whip Wendy Morton and her deputy.

Since 2014, the world has gradually been learning about the horrors that occur in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Media reports have described how Uyghurs are put in "vocational training camps," which are effectively concentration camps. People can be put there for the smallest expression of religiosity, and any hope of getting out requires undergoing a "reeducation" process, though some never escape at all. Members of Xinjiang's other ethnic groups are put in the camps, too -- primarily Kazakhs. Since February 2021, the relatives and loved ones of Kazakh people currently being held in the Xinjiang camps have held daily protests outside of the Chinese Consulate in Almaty. Meduza is publishing photographer Ofeliya Zhakaeva's project "Nearby," which focuses on Chinese Kazakhs whose relatives have disappeared into the Xinjiang internment system. She photographed protest participants outside of the Consulate with objects that remind them of their loved ones and recorded their stories. We also talk about the relationship between Jack and Audrey, Mandy, and Logan.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stopped in Madison on Wednesday to address foreign policy, with an emphasis on China, in the state Capitol. Pompeo’s visit to Wisconsin was one of three from members of President Trump’s administration this week. Trump was just campaigning in Mosinee a week ago. State Senate President Roger Roth invited Pompeo to speak. Republican legislators welcomed Pompeo with applause as he stood before them at the Capitol. Republicans who attended included Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke, and Senate Assistant Majority Leader Dan Feyen. His speech focused on foreign policy, with the majority centered on the Chinese Communist Party’s influence in governments around the world. For example, Pompeo discussed an email that the Chinese Consulate in Chicago sent to Roth earlier this year. It detailed China’s response to the coronavirus and asked Roth to push for a resolution praising the country for it. Roth declined to do so. “The

Tensions between the US and China continue to escalate as China imposed sanctions on 11 U.S. citizens including legislators in response to the U.S. imposition of sanctions on 11 Hong Kong and Chinese officials accused of curtailing political freedoms. Monday’s actions follow the Trump administration’s recent order for the closure of the Chinese Consulate in Houston and China’s retaliatory closure of the US Consulate in Chengdu. Some analysts say the damage may be irreparable, for the short term and potentially much longer. Also, Global coronavirus cases reach 20 million with 5 million in the United States. Plus, as President Trump took to the podium for his daily White House coronavirus update, he was quickly whisked away by a secret service officer due to a security threat.
The Department of Treasury has imposed sanctions on Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, and 10 other individuals for “for undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy and restricting the freedom of expression or assembly of the citizens of Hong Kong.” Meanwhile, the Chinese consulate in New York is destroying documents on a large scale. Around noon on August 6, two shredding trucks from a company, “USA shred” were seen parked in front of the gate of the Chinese Consulate in New York, and videos showed them destroying bins of files for consulate workers. And in other news, the US ban on TikTok is now going through, and will now include a partial ban on WeChat as well. President Donald Trump signed executive orders to ban US companies from transactions with the parent companies of these two Chinese social media apps, that is Bytedance and Tencent Holdings, respectively, on the grounds of national security concerns. Recently it’s felt as though every time the phone rings it’s a scam. Fraudsters pretending to be from the CRA, Chinese Consulate, or police — filling up your voicemail inbox and wasting your time. It’s become such an issue that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has demanded that all Canadian telecoms update their systems by Dec. 19 to limit these types of calls. Host Tamara Khandaker is joined in studio by John Wunderlich, a privacy and security consultant at John Wunderlich & Associates, and board member of MyData Global. They discuss the uptick in phone call scams, and if there’s any way to actually stop them.
Chinese Americans are being targeted by scammers in schemes known as the “Chinese consulate scam” and the “blessing scam,” through which victims have lost millions. When Mandarin-language calls began to bombard residents across the U.S., authorities take a deeper look. They find that these illegal robocalls are targeting areas with large Chinese American populations. Victims of the Chinese consulate scam are told they are in legal trouble with the Chinese government. The scammers then persuade them to hand over money or personal information to resolve the phony problem. Victims lose $150,000 on average. And, in Chinatowns across America, scammers are targeting older Chinese Americans in the blessing scam, aka the ghost scam. This scam uses some victims' traditional beliefs to lure them into an elaborate con that involves a team of scammers who work in tandem to steal valuables and cash.
This week a protest took place outside the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles. More than a hundred people demonstrated, demanding the Chinese government end the horrific dog meat trade in China, where pets are stolen from yards and right out of people's hands and then tortured to death! Yes, no exaggeration. The tormentors believe that torturing the dog makes the dog meat better at combating virility problems. This is sick. Many Chinese Americans are battling this horror and want to help the Chinese people, most of whom do not support this barbarism but are afraid to speak out because of the repressive government. What can we in the United States do to stop this nightmare? Also, while we point the finger, should we also look in the mirror and admit our treatment of millions of factory farm animals is also barbaric and unnecessary.

Two attacks in Pakistan, including a brazen assault on the Chinese consulate in Karachi, are likely to complicate prime minister Imran Khan’s efforts to renegotiate China’s massive, controversial Belt and Road investments as well as an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout and ensure that Pakistan is shielded from blacklisting by an international anti-money laundering and terrorism finance watchdog.

In addition to horses, he regularly works on mules, donkeys, and burrows, and the occasional llama, sheep, goat, pig and cow, and has tended to the foot care of species of ungulates he can’t even name at the La Crosse Municipal Zoo.
On March 10th, 1959, Tibetans rose up in Lhasa to protect His Holiness the Dalai Lama from perceived threat. As a result, the Chinese Army—still in the process of colonizing Tibet—opened fire on innocent Tibetans, killing thousands. This audio documentary brings listeners outside Vancouver’s Chinese consulate, where Tibetan-Canadians gather every March 10th to honour those slain on Uprising Day in 1959 and to demand an end to human rights abuses inside Tibet today.by Rehmatullah Sheikh
