Is it the doctor who causes the discord in the cancer patient's heart? Is it the cop who stirs up dissension for the driver guilty of speeding? Likewise, is it the faithful pastor and/or layman who sows division when he addresses the false teachings of false teachers? Let's dive into Scripture to find out. Rev. Francis Pieper offers us wisdom from Vol. III of Christian Dogmatics. Find the Freedom of Conscience and Religious Liberty Conference at stmarksferndale.com/freedom. Host Rev. Poor Anselm, the favorite medieval-scholastic whipping boy of apparently enlightened moderns. Outraged at the attack on Anselm's honor, Dad and I endeavor to make satisfaction for his slandered reputation, give the best and most charitable account of his atonement theory, make some slight tweaks to it in a Lutheran-ish direction while taking serious issue with Gustaf Aulén's attempt to do the same, and overall make the case that the Anselmian concern for justice and recompense is not nearly as foreign to our sensibilities nowadays as his cultured despisers like to claim. Notes: 1. Anselm of Canterbury’s Cur Deus Homo can be found in A Scholastic Miscellany 2. Gustaf Aulén, Christus Victor 3. Karl Barth, Anselm: Fides Quaerens Intellectum 4. The Nominalists, from the Latin nomen (“name”), were a school of late medieval philosophers who held that concepts do not exist in reality (opposing the position of the “realists”) but are only names that human beings create to categorize or classify really existing things or persons. As Dad explains to students: “To me, the tree stump along the Appalachian Trail is a chair, but to a termite, it’s a meal.” While we’re at it, Dad—who once described himself as anti-Kantian par excellence, has co-authored a book arguing that Kant is just Plato continued by other means, and has written another book on the confrontation between biblical and philosophical monotheism in the Arian controversy (Divine Complexity)—discusses the various atonement “theories” in chapter 3 of Luther and the Beloved Community. 5. The divine dei in Greek means “it is necessary” 6. Anselm’s definition of God as “that than which nothing greater can be conceived” is found in his work the Proslogion 7. Brandt Jean’s victim-impact statement 8. Friedrich Nietzsche talks about the “evil genius” of God dying for His debtors in Beyond Good and Evil 9. A major source for Luther’s christology is his Confession Concerning Christ’s Supper 10. The Tome of Leo is a patristic document supporting the two natures of Christ but at the cost of assigning very different duties to each nature in a hermetically sealed kind of way 11. admirabile commercium = joyful exchange (in Latin) 12. Peter Abelard gave his version of “atonement” theology in his commentary on Romans, an excerpt of which is also in A Scholastic Miscellany 13. Gerhard O. Forde, “The Work of Christ: Atonement as Actual Event,” in Christian Dogmatics vol. 2 14. Hans Urs von Balthasar writes about Luther’s doctrine of atonement in Theo-Drama vol. 4 15. Welcome to the second season of Queen of the Sciences! We begin our conversations in 2020 with a deep dive into the foolishness and stumbling block that is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Overfamiliar today as a religious symbol, the cross was once the supreme declaration that the person thereon was trash, subhuman, and beyond redemption—certainly not capable of redeeming others. We try to imagine ourselves back into the shame of crucifixion, examine its uses in Roman political control, and explore how the death of God upon it can possibly become the source of eternal life. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.” 11. 00:00 - Introduction 03:40 - Scripture Narrative (John 1:24-34) 09:48 - Free-for-All (Favorite and Least-Favorite Christmas Gift Ever) 24:19 - Main Topic (Luther's Baptismal Rite - Part 2) On episode THIRTY-EIGHT of Let the Bird Fly! the guys hold Wade off for one more episode, so that Mike and Peter can continue the discussion on Luther’s Baptismal Rite that they began with Ben on Episode 37. The guys are joined once again by Peter’s two oldest girls, as well as Mike's middle daughter. After Peter discusses how the Gospel according to St. John handles the baptism of Jesus, the girls help the guys our in the Free-for-All. Mike proves to be so-twentieth-century and Peter once again discusses his “classy” upbringing. But eventually they make it back around to Luther’s Baptismal Rite, picking up with Luther’s wonderful Flood Prayer. Mike again references volume 3 of Francis Pieper’s Christian Dogmatics. And Oliva demonstrates the Augustinian influence that has caused her to reconsider her Donatist position on baptism. If you haven’t listened to Part 1 of our discussion yet, you may want to do that first. You can find that in Episode 37. We hope the two-part discussion isn’t too much, but trust us, we reigned ourselves in (we probably could’ve made this a twenty-part discussion). Guests Rev. Adam Filipek and Rev. Adam Moline join host Rev. Jonathan Fisk to continue sharpening iron in an ongoing study of Francis Pieper’s Christliche Dogmatik, or Christian Dogmatics, a defense of the Christian faith based on the premise that Scripture Alone is our foundation. Listen to your worldview demolition special, breaking down the stronghold bad opinions of our enemy and setting up shop with the mighty fortress of our Lord’s most holy and inerrant, inspired, and unending Word. Today’s conversation covers the standard of propositional truths, men’s opinions make only a spineless theology, hold on and speak for yourself, and Pastor Preus goes on ranting. Guests Rev. 00:00 - Introduction 02:52 - Scripture Narrative (Mark 10:13-16) 06:29 - Free-for-All (Favorite Part of Christmas--excluding Jesus and presents) 25:15 - Main Topic (Luther's Baptismal Rite - Part 1) On episode THIRTY-SEVEN of Let the Bird Fly! the guys shake Wade once again and are able to talk about what they want to for a change. Ben, Mike, and Peter welcome a couple of their daughters (between the three of them they have 9 daughters and no sons) into the studio while they discuss Luther’s Baptismal Rite. The talk goes long, so they decide to pick it up again on a future episode, so we’re calling this Part 1. Before getting to the main topic (and two Peter’s daughters revealing that he’s evidently raising them as Donatists), Mike walks us through the little children coming to Jesus in Mark 10. We also get into the Christmas spirit asking, What’s your favorite part of Christmas? in the Free-for-All (and we prohibited the obvious answers of Jesus’s birth and presents). Although we don’t make it all the way through the Baptismal Rite, we hope that you still find this first part of our discussion worth your while. Mike refers to Francis Pieper’s Christian Dogmatics a number of times during the episode. If you’re looking for that text, it can be found in Volume 3. One last thing, we're doing another BOOK GIVEAWAY (just in time for Christmas, no less). If you'd like to sign-up for your chance to win a signed copy of Wade's most recent book, A Path Strewn with Sinners: A Devotional Study of Mark’s Gospel & His Race to the Cross, head over to our BOOK GIVEAWAY PAGE and register. And if you're wondering what Wade's book is all about, head over to Episode 30, where Wade talked with Peter about his book.
