In this episode we speak with Andrew Krinks about his recent book White Property, Black Trespass: Racial Capitalism and the Religious Function of Mass Criminalization.  The book is really interesting and I highly recommend it, this is part 1 of a 2 part discussion we recorded on it. You can pick it up from Massive Bookshop the bookstore that uses their revenue from book sales to bail people out of jail. In this discussion Krinks goes into the religious function that the mass criminalization of Black, Brown, and dispossessed peoples serves within the racial capitalist system. Engaging with Marxist and materialist explanations as well as Christian theologians and bourgeois philosophers, we get into how police and prisons are tethered deeply with religious ideology, which also finds quarter within the so-called secular theorists who provided the political philosophical underpinnings of the capitalist system. We also get into dynamics of race making and racialist thinking by way of folks like Cedric Robinson and Ruth Wilson Gilmore to examine the connection between race making and property relations.   I'll also note that last year we hosted a video conversation with Melayna Kay Lamb and Tia Trafford about the philosophical underpinnings of police power that has some important areas of overlap with this discussion as well, but focuses a bit more on European secular philosophy and policing. Starting on Monday the 6th we'll be hosting a new live series on our YouTube channel with Mtume Gant who is a filmmaker, media critic, and professor of film, where we will be talking about Cedric Robinson's Forgeries of Memory and Meaning. So if you like this conversation I think you'll find a lot of resonance with those discussions as well as they really go into how and when race-making processes are instrumentalized in the media, using historical examples. And lastly it is a new year, and we have a ton of new content coming this year. Last year we published 115 video episodes, and 38 audio episodes. We hope to be similarly productive again this year, but in order to do that we do need your support to be able to put in the amount of time necessary to get all that work done. You can become a patron of the show for as little as $1 a month. We should have another study group starting up in February and that is open to all of our patrons as well. So head over to Patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism and kick in a $1 a month or more to that effort.

Judith Butler discusses their new book "Who's Afraid of Gender?" published by Farrar Straus Giroux. Named a "Most Anticipated Book of 2024" by Time, Elle, Kirkus, Literary Hub, The Millions, & Electric Literature. Purchase book here: https://citylights.com/whos-afraid-of-gender/ Judith Butler, the groundbreaking thinker whose iconic book "Gender Trouble" redefined how we think about gender & sexuality, confronts the attacks on “gender” that have become central to right-wing movements today. Global networks have formed “anti-gender ideology movements” that are dedicated to circulating a fantasy that gender is a dangerous, perhaps diabolical, threat to families, local cultures, civilization—& even “man” himself. Inflamed by the rhetoric of public figures, this movement has sought to nullify reproductive justice, undermine protections against sexual & gender violence, & strip trans & queer people of their rights to pursue a life without fear of violence. The aim of "Who's Afraid of Gender?" is not to offer a new theory of gender but to examine how “gender” has become a phantasm for emerging authoritarian regimes, fascist formations, & transexclusionary feminists. In their vital, courageous new book, Butler illuminates the concrete ways that this phantasm of “gender” collects & displaces anxieties & fears of destruction. Operating in tandem with deceptive accounts of “critical race theory” & xenophobic panics about migration, the anti-gender movement demonizes struggles for equality, fuels aggressive nationalism, & leaves millions of people vulnerable to subjugation. An essential intervention into one of the most fraught issues of our moment, "Who's Afraid of Gender?" is a bold call to refuse the alliance with authoritarian movements & to make a broad coalition with all those whose struggle for equality is linked with fighting injustice. Imagining new possibilities for both freedom & solidarity, Butler offers us a hopeful work of social and political analysis that is both timely and timeless. Judith Butler is the author of several books including "Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity," "Bodies That Matter: On the Discursive Limits of 'Sex'," "The Psychic Life of Power: Theories of Subjection, Excitable Speech, Notes Toward a Performative Theory of Assembly," & "The Force of Non-Violence." In addition to numerous academic honors & publications, Butler has published editorials & reviews in The Guardian, The New Statesman, The Nation, Time Magazine, the London Review of Books, & in a wide range of journals, newspapers, radio & podcast programs throughout Europe, Latin America, Central & South Asia, & South Africa. They live in Berkeley. Maggie Nelson is the author of several acclaimed books of poetry & prose, including "Like Love: Essays and Conversations" (2024), the national bestseller "On Freedom: Four Songs of Care and Constraint" (2021), National Book Critics Circle Award winner and international bestseller "The Argonauts" (2015), "The Art of Cruelty: A Reckoning" (2011), "Bluets" (2009; named by Bookforum as one of the top 10 best books of the past 20 years), "The Red Parts: Autobiography of a Trial" (2007), & "Women, the New York School, & Other True Abstractions" (2007), "Something Bright, Then Holes" (2007), & "Jane: A Murder" (2005; finalist, the PEN/ Martha Albrand Art of the Memoir). Through an engaging dialogue, these thinkers unravel how care—or the lack thereof—impacts Black lives, and how these dynamics inform Black suffering. They also delve into the roles of kinship and family within Afropessimism, examining the unique experiences of those marked Black and how these relationships can be fractured by the conditions of unfreedom. Romans 13:2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. The encouragement we receive today still is with reference to those that God has set over us for our good. The words of verses 1-2 in the Greek are interesting. The root word tasso is the word translated subjection in vs. 1, established in vs. 1, and then again in the word resists in vs. 2. Subjection (hupo tasso) is to arrange oneself under God's appointed agent. Established (tasso) describes God's appointment of an agent to a place of authority. And the word resist (antitasso) is to arrange oneself over against God's appointed agent. When our goal is to love everyone God puts in our paths with Jesus, our relationship to the government agent or agency is to love them for their highest good. That means we must not obey laws that hurt or harm others or obey rulers who advocate actions that are detrimental to others. In situations like that, love makes an appeal based on the truth revealed in God's Word. We not only show what is the loving thing to do, but also how it will be good for them when Jesus returns and they are to give an account for the administration of the jurisdiction to which they are appointed. This fulfills Paul's admonition to submit to the governing authorities. Paul suggested that those who love in this way will not be condemned by God or by those authorities. There may be times when we are called by God to suffer at the hands of evil authorities. In such cases, the last verses of chapter 12 are to be applied. “Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,' says the Lord. ‘BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD.' Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” This is not resisting or setting ourselves against God's agents, in fact, quite the contrary. We are living to love with Jesus those God has placed in our paths with a view to His receiving glory on the day of His coming. Welcome to Day 2231 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Hebrews-3 Subjection...Suffering...and Sanctification – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 04/30/2023 “Subjection…Suffering…and Sanctification”  Hebrews 2:5-18 Last week, we continued our extended series through the book of Hebrews in the New Testament. Our focus was not to drift away from our spiritual foundation. Today, I will read Hebrews 2:5-18 as we go through the message on page 1864 of your Pew Bibles. Perspective (Point of View)—that's what the first-century readers of Hebrews needed and what we all need as we face the tsunamis of suffering in this life. We need to recognize where we are in God's story and trust that the pioneer and perfecter of our faith will bring this world (and all His faithful followers) to a good and glorious end. /The remainder of Hebrews 2 provides this perspective. (Point of view) Following his comments regarding angels in chapter 1 (and a strong warning that Christians must guard against neglecting their salvation in 2:1-4,) the writer of Hebrews returns to his discussion of angels,/ this time in their relationship to humanity. At the beginning of God's story, humans were originally designed to exercise dominion over the created world. But on this side of Genesis 3, after the fall of humanity, that original intention for men and women was suspended, and we are subject to suffering and the effects of a cursed world. However, the writer of Hebrews pulls back the curtain ever so briefly and gives us a teaser trailer of a future in which the ultimate Son of Man, Jesus Christ, will lead the redeemed to realize their full potential in God's plan. Coming to their rescue, Jesus Christ will restore to humanity what they lost in Adam. Until then, we're all stuck in an often bleak series of scenes characterized by suffering. But even amid this suffering, God is working things together for our good and His glory (Rom. 8:28). Until Christ comes and establishes the new global Eden, that is, the finalization of God's kingdom, we can expect to suffer through the long, arduous, and often painful process of sanctification. 2:5–8 5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: (PS 8:4-6) “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7 You made them a little[a] lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8     and put everything under their feet.”[b][c] In putting everything under them,[

Hebrews 2:5-9 5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that You are mindful of Him, Or the son of man, that You care for Him? 7 You made Him for a little while lower than the angels; You have crowned Him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under His feet. Now in putting everything in subjection to Him, He left nothing outside His control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to Him. 9 But we see Him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. Key Words: Angels, Subjection, Control, Jesus, Crowned, Glory, Honor, Suffering Keystone Verse: Now in putting everything in subjection to Him, He left nothing outside His control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to Him. (Hebrews 2:8) Download Bulletin

The Rev. Martin Schultheis, Chief Ministry Officer in the Southeastern District, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study 1 Peter 3. “Wives be subject to your husbands.” “Husbands show honor to wives as the weaker vessels.” St. Peter focuses on the dynamics of relationships, particularly within the family, offering invaluable insights into how believers can navigate life's trials with grace and gentleness. It emphasizes the enduring strength that lies in maintaining a spirit marked by humility and respect, even in the face of adversity. The Books of 1 and 2 Peter, found within the New Testament of the Bible, collectively offer profound and inspirational letters written by the Apostle Peter. These letters provide timeless messages of enduring faith and unwavering hope for Christians facing trials and challenges. Throughout these epistles, Peter emphasizes the importance of living holy and God-honoring lives, even amid adversity. He reminds believers of their living hope in Jesus Christ and encourages them to stand firm in their faith.

In this episode we interview Dr. Kris Manjapra. Kris Manjapra works at the intersection of transnational history and the critical study of race and colonialism.  He is the author of five books, in this episode we discuss his comparative study of global emancipation processes and the implications for reparations movement today: Black Ghost of Empire: The Long Death of Slavery and the Failure of Emancipation.   In addition to his scholarly work, he is the founder of a site-based nonprofit, Black History in Action, dedicated to the restoration and reactivation of a Black cultural heritage center in Cambridge, MA.  Kris also co-organizes a free online community certificate course, entitled Black Futures Matter, serving people's assemblies across the US and the Caribbean. Our conversation with Manjapra focuses on Black Ghosts of Empire and on unsettling our mystified and highly inaccurate dominant views of emancipation processes globally. Dr. Manjapra walks us through the origin and history of the legal apparatus of emancipation and takes a materialist approach to analyzing whose interests were served through these processes to demonstrate how these historical shifts preserved and upheld the interests of slave owners. He also demonstrates the various ways that emancipation processes were designed to place Black people into a state of indebtedness and delay their freedom from bondage. This is an excellent discussion for thinking through the ways that the white supremacist capitalist state and the property owning classes  seek to respond to crises in ways that preserve existing hierarchies and power relations. We also discuss many of the vibrant Black abolitionist movements that demanded, organized, and struggled for alternative futures. Taking a look at some of the earliest Pan Africanist and Black Feminist thinkers, cultural workers, and organizers Manjapra stitches together a rich tapestry of movement lineage that carries into the current ongoing struggles for reparations for slavery and its long afterlives. In this episode we interview China Miéville.  China Miéville is the multi-award-winning author of many works of fiction and non-fiction. His fiction includes The City and the City, Embassytown and This Census-Taker. He has won the Hugo, World Fantasy, and Arthur C. Clarke awards. His non-fiction includes the photo-illustrated essay London's Overthrow. He is also the author of October: The Story of the Russian Revolution. He has written for various publications, and is a founding editor of the journal Salvage. He is also a former member of multiple socialist party formations and organizations. In this conversation China joins the podcast to talk about his latest book, A Spectre, Haunting: On the Communist Manifesto. The book provides an introduction to The Communist Manifesto which provides readers with a guide to understanding the Manifesto and the many specters it has conjured. Through his unique and unorthodox reading, Miéville offers a spirited defense of the enduring relevance of Marx and Engels' ideas. The book also contains the full text of the Manifesto and multiple prefaces penned by Marx & Engels.  You can pick the book up directly from Haymarket Books at 40% off currently. We really want to thank Haymarket and China Miéville for donating 40 copies of the book (!!) and also for making a donation to help cover the cost of postage to our incarcerated book club through our partnership with Massive Bookshop and Prisons Kill. We do still need to raise about $150 more dollars to cover the cost of postage to get this book inside, and we'll include a link to contribute to that effort in the show notes. Last month we were able, along with some donations from Massive Bookshop and our patrons to provide 40 copies of Saidiya Hartman's Scenes of Subjection to those incarcerated readers. As for the show itself, It is December, currently for the month we've had more nonrenewals than we have new patrons, which is not unexpected this time of year as people try to balance holiday expenses. However if you have the capacity to become a patron of the show, you can do so for as little as $1 a month or $10.80 per year, at patreon.com/millennialsarekilingcapitalism.
