Welcome to the 1980s, where the war on drugs rages on and America's teenagers are caught in the crossfire. Enter Straight Incorporated, a controversial new rehab program that promises its tough love approach can set kids back on the straight and narrow. But for the survivors of Straight, their experience tells a horrifyingly different story — one of abuse, torture, and brainwashing. Season 2 of “The Sunshine Place” delves into the shocking tale of Straight Incorporated, an experimental teen rehab that descended into a sadistic cult exploiting parents' deepest fears and their children's vulnerabilities. This heart-wrenching exploration of parenting, family, and the human spirit intertwines with the dark underbelly of power, money, and politics. And at the heart of it all, we find a connection back to the subject of “The Sunshine Place” Season 1, Synanon. Executive Produced by Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Emily Barclay Ford of Team Downey, together with Josh McLaughlin of Wink Pictures. The Sunshine Place is an Audacy original. Michael Lista is an investigative journalist, essayist and poet who lives in Toronto. I've followed his career now for some fifteen years. He's written true crime for the better part of a decade. His story “The Sting” is being adapted by Adam Perlman, Robert Downey Jr., and Team Downey, into a television series for Apple TV+. We talk here about Michael's recent book of true crime stories, The Human Scale; about Truman Capote and the non-fiction novel; about listening and details; being honest when talking with people who've experienced crises, and how tawdry it is to ask for exclusivity; about examining systems, and how tardy the delivery of justice can sometimes be; about how the story resides in the telling, and how Shakespeare stuck his landings; about in extremis and understanding who we really are; fact-checked fairy tales; competing against YouTube and Netflix; and much more.

John Wyatt, the founder of Cinespia, joins host Jessica Kantor for this week's episode of Raising Cinephiles.Founded by entrepreneur John Wyatt in 2002, Cinespia has built an avid online following of well over 250,000 fans through its eighteen-year history. The organization also hosts screenings, concerts, and film premieres at classic movie palaces in downtown Los Angeles.Wyatt attributes the success of Cinespia to his belief that “there's a need in L.A. for people to get together and watch films with each other. That's how these films were meant to be seen: on the big screen with a large audience, emoting, screaming, and laughing. The picnics, the DJs, the community experience, these things transform the movie-going experience.”Over the years, Cinespia has also become a popular attraction for Hollywood directors, producers, and actors. In 2014, Cinespia produced the annual Cinefamily fundraiser with Team Downey, showcasing the films of Robert Downey, Sr., with a benefit hosted by Louis CK at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Cinespia's stellar array of guest appearances to present the films being shown also include Drew Barrymore, Patricia Arquette, Lena Waithe, director Cameron Crowe, Paul Reubens, and Questlove.Past notable events include the FYC screening event for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the premiere of Wonderstruck, and activations for Academy Award-nominated films such as Suspiria and Beautiful Boy.Films discussed:King KongWinnie The PooClash of the TitansRaiders of the Lost ArkThe 400 BlowsBlade RunnerStar WarsTampopoManhunterLa Bande Du DrugstoreElviraThe ShinningGooniesBreakfast at Tiffany'sThe Wizard of OzThe Lego MovieSpongeBob SquarepantsMr Show New Episodes Every Wednesday!EPISODE CREDITS:Host, Producer, Editor: Jessica KantorBooker: Noelia MurphyBe sure to follow and tag Raising Cinephiles on Instagram

In the second season of the Emmy-nominated series, the scion of a powerful oil family is brutally murdered. Power, social justice, immigration, LGBTQ rights, and what it truly means to be guilty, are among the issues raised by the series. Begler's previous series include the Peabody Award-winning The Knick, starring Clive Owen, directed by Steven Soderbergh, writing/producing credits also include comedy series The Tony Danza Show, The Jeff Foxworthy Show and the film Big Miracle starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski. “Creators Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones and Team Downey, this was a sort of a thing that they came up with, but I think what we wanted to explore in season two was really to dig more into this idea of what is it to be a woman with ambition in this era, 3% of attorneys were women in the entire nation in 1933. So that alone is an uphill battle. And then when you add the complication of being queer in this time, and that there are laws against it that you have to make sure every step you take is so calculated and so careful that you don't slip up. It's all based on fear and threat and what happens if something you've established all of a sudden, a woman can come in and do it.When we look at the current political climate, and we look at the way they're trying to erase history, to whitewash history, I think is such a dangerous precedent because we can only learn from our past. We can learn from our mistakes. We can learn from what happened. If we don't tell the truth, where does that leave us? If we can cherry-pick what's important to know and not know, and by an elite view, well, how different are those elite views from the elite view of a hundred years ago? We have to learn from our past. It's the only way to have a future. And I think that to me is essential.”www.imdb.com/title/tt2077823www.instagram.com/perrymasonhbowww.imdb.com/name/nm0066764www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

Once called “the miracle on the beach,” Synanon began in the 1960s as an experimental rehab facility in Santa Monica, California with a radical claim: It could cure heroin addiction. Before long, it would make an even bolder claim: It could cure any of your problems. All you had to do was move in. What started in a house on the beach, soon spread to compounds across the country. The man who made the miracle happen, Charles E. Dederich, aka “Chuck,” would be the one to destroy it all, along with the lives of many of his followers and millions of dollars in assets. The Sunshine Place tells the mind-blowing, true-story of Synanon - one of America's most cutting edge social experiments, turned into one of its most dangerous and violent cults - as it's never been told before: by the people who lived it. Executive Produced by Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Emily Barclay Ford for Team Downey and C13Originals, together with Josh McLaughlin for Wink Pictures and written, produced, and directed by Peabody-nominated C13Originals, a Cadence13 Studio.  Learn more about your ad choices. É hora do docinho!
