At the dawn of the internet as we know it today, long before social media exploded the Hollywood hierarchy, there was Ain't It Cool News, an in-your-face site, launched in 1996, that covered the movie business — passionately, disruptively and absolutely without fear or favor. Drew McWeeny, who joined Harry Knowles' Austin startup in its earliest days, writing from L.A. under the pseudonym Moriarty, tells Richard Rushfield how Ain't It Cool News remade entertainment journalism, confounded the studios and enraged execs from Tom Rothman to Rupert Murdoch. Among other breaks with industry-coverage norms, McWeeny and his colleagues were the first to publish reports and reviews from test screenings, changing the fortunes of films including Batman & Robin and, most famously, Titanic. “I was addicted to Premiere, Movieline, all those magazines,” McWeeny recalls. “But it was all very carefully stage managed with the studios, and it had to be. We were the response to that, which was the most punk rock version of: No, not only do we not deal with the studios, but fuck the studios.” Learn more about your ad choices. On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist Albert Lanier, a multi-time guest on the show, just started a Substack called The Final Cut. This new venture from Lanier is a return to his roots. Although he's become known, especially to listeners of this show, for his thoughts on true crime cases and politics, in a previous life he was a film critic/movie reviewer. He even contributed to Ain't It Cool News! And over the years he had an opportunity to meet Hollywood players ranging from Nancy Kwan to Roger Corman. In this conversation, Lanier and I will discuss his work writing about cinema and his experiences going to film festivals. But we'll also discuss his thoughts on the state of the movie industry and the state of film criticism as well. In particular, we will look at the decline of film criticism and what phenomena such as film-focused, anti-woke, culture war Youtube channels have on film criticism as well as the impact of Movie Tok on film criticism and how we understand and appreciate cinema. We'll also discuss the cycles of the film industry, the importance of overseas markets to Hollywood, and much, much more.
The Summer of Spielberg begins with Spielberg's biggest hit, the classic 1982 alien/divorce family film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Adjusted for inflation, this is the fourth-highest-grossing movie of all time. Beloved by generations, it is a lot of fun, yes… but it's also some dark, dark shit. Laci explains why it's always been so difficult for her to watch, even though she knows how good a movie it is. There is much gushing about puppets. There has maybe never been a better puppet in a movie. And there may have never been three better child actor performances than the brothers and sister in this movie. This week Mike, Devaughn & Steven are back to talk about BLADE II and the return of everyone's favorite vampire killer. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, it might be the perfect mix of horror and comic book heroics and offered the Spanish auteur his first bonafide hit in the United States. Our trio of hosts break down the troubled path the future Oscar winner traveled to land the movie, and how his encyclopedic knowledge of comic book lore and monsters helped elevate the second Blade during a time when X-Men and Spider-Man movies began raising expectations for what comic book movies could be. We talk about A LOT here, including what might be the worst piece of film criticism ever to enter the public sphere via Ain't It Cool News, why Blade is the asexual hero for our times, the continued bromance between Blade and Whistler, just how early 00s this movie is (if you know, you know) and marvel (no pun intended) at the massive step up in the action set pieces. So strap in, grab a stake, load up on some garlic and settle down for another supersized episode.

The First Part in our Building a Better Monster Trilogy We welcome M. Night Shyamalan's work to the TiT club with the film where it all started to go wrong for "The Next Spielberg." But you know what (show notes author's note here that nothing subtle ever followed a sentence that starts with YOU KNOW WHAT) we actually like this movie. Just go ahead and put one giant SPOILER ALERT for this episode as we discuss the dashed hopes of Ain't It Cool News posters and the parenting skills of William Hurt. But it's lovely, the romance is lovely, the cinematography is lovely and Adrien Brody is... well, it's better than THE LADY IN THE WATER! Which we promise is not coming to the podcast soon. But it will at some later date. Enjoy the love story in LARPing! We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! Places where you can buy The He-Man Effect: A local comic book store A local book retailer Or 'that place' if you absolutely have no other choices. A story about a poisoned water supply, insane misogynists, penis obsession, and way too much semen.***LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED*** Listen in as me and guest, Chris, ...Co-directed by Drew Bolduc (Science Team, Assassinaut) and Dan Nelson (The Taint), and written by Bolduc, Ain't It Cool News called the film "one of the most inanely funny films [we've] seen," while Portland Mercury said "[they] can't recommend this movie, per se, but [they] also can't stop thinking about it." If those don't get you curious, then you'll definitely need to hear this episode. This film is fucking epic and brilliant. Fight me.It tells the story of a small town whose water supply has been poisoned by the TAINT. It makes men go crazy for murder, and murder makes them orgasm like firehoses. Forced to navigate and survive in this ruthless and jizz-soaked world is Phil O'Ginny (played by filmmaker Drew Bolduc), a lazy student who cares more about getting laid and smoking cigarettes then class. He meets up with fierce Misandra (a tough-as-nails Colleen Walsh) and the two set out to learn just what happened to cause the violent mayhem around them. The film is currently available on Vimeo, TromaNOW, and Blu-ray & DVD.

Writer and animation connoisseur Joan Ford, (DC Super Hero Girls, Tiny Toons Looniversity), joins to discuss Pixar's new release, LIGHTYEAR starring Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, and Peter Sohn. The Angus MacLane-directed animated science fiction film is a (sort of) prequel to the Toy Story franchise, presented as a 1995 adventure movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy. But does the movie-within-a-movie live up to the saga's gold standard? We get to the bottom of this question, stopping along the way for some trusty MNAM diversions into Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Child's Play 3, Ain't It Cool News, the lost roles of Tom Cruise, real life Tim Allen encounters, and of course, the AMC Stubs A-List. So buckle up, Star Command rookies, for a podcast that goes to infinity... and beyond!

Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about our collective choice of topic: Peter Jackson's version of The Fellowship of the Ring. Released twenty years ago this month, there's simply no question regarding the sheer force of the impact that the first part of the massive effort to create a three-film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings had. It squarely placed the story directly into more mainstream popular culture, transformed the nature of the longtime fandom and appreciation around the books, and became the anchor point of any number of adaptations and interpretations since. But besides fond memories of a suddenly wild and exuberant time, looking back with a more critical but still appreciative eye is useful in acknowledging flaws and curious decisions as well as reflecting once more on just how striking a film it is. What does a wider consideration of that time in history tell us, not least of which was the shattering impact of 9/11 three months prior, as well as being caught in a continuing new wave of sf, comic book and fantasy adaptations? Are all the various casting choices that the team made for the film successful, as well as the adaptational choices themselves? How does the film succeed as a film straight up, and what are its best moments? And is Legolas really a mink stole? Downlowd: The Rise and Fall of Harry Knowles and Ain't It Cool News
Downlowd is a deep dive audio documentary series that explores the morally complicated, occasionally inspiring and often forgotten oral histories of the internet. For its first season titled “The Rise and Fall of Harry Knowles,” Downlow.d will delve into the meteoric rise of proto-online influencer Harry J. Knowles and his movie news website Ain't It Cool News. This eight-part series attempts to understand how a no-budget website created in a spare bedroom in Austin, Texas flexed unchecked power and influence over Hollywood. Harry Knowles, a semi paralysed man who frequently weighed more than 400 pounds was the last person anyone thought would be famous. Yet through his work on his formerly venerable movie news and reviews site Ain't It Cool News, which he launched in 1997, Knowles became the internet's ‘second celebrity.' The series will also show how Ain't It Cool News helped take internet movie geek culture out of fan conventions and into the mainstream before the site's creator was mired in controversy at the dawn of the #MeToo movement.

As teenagers, kung fu disciples Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) were inseparable. Fast forward 25 years, and each has grown into a washed-up middle-aged man seemingly one kick away from pulling a hamstring—and not at all preoccupied with thoughts of martial arts or childhood best friends. But when their old master is murdered, the trio reunites, soon learning that avenging their sifu will require conquering old grudges (and a dangerous hitman still armed with ample knee cartilage) if they are to honorably defend his legacy. Tran Quoc Bao | Writer/Director/Editor Mentored early on by master action director Corey Yuen, Bao was instilled with an approach to action that doesn’t rely solely on spectacle, but also draws on story and character. Screen Anarchy praised his written-and-directed short Bookie for its “flawlessly realized world populated by entirely fleshed out and believable characters, driven by a compelling narrative and brought to sumptuous life.” He has since traveled back to his homeland of Vietnam to work as a feature film editor. His editing credits include Cho Lon, one of Southeast Asia’s highest-budgeted action blockbusters, and Jackpot, a heartfelt comedy selected as Vietnam’s official entry to the 2016 Oscars for Best Foreign Film. Our guest today is Dr Andrew Howell who leads the supernova group at the Las Cumbres Observatory and is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In other words, he's an astrophysicist. As a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, he helped to confirm the acceleration of the universe, for which his mentor, Saul Perlmutter was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. After that he moved to the University of Toronto, where he helped make the best measurements of the Dark Energy driving the acceleration of the universe. Andy is also the Principal Investigator of the Global Supernova Project, a worldwide collaboration to observe 1000 supernovae more intensely than has ever before been achieved. He's also been named to the list of the highest cited researchers in the world for the past two years. He is a co-author on more than 200 scientific papers, and has been instrumental in the discovery of several new classes of supernovae, including explosions brighter and dimmer than previously thought possible. His group co-discovered the first kilonova, a merger of two neutron stars, and helped to determine that they are the source of the heaviest elements in the universe like gold and platinum. This was widely heralded as the biggest scientific discovery of 2017, and Andy was selected by the National Science Foundation as one of a handful of scientists to make the official announcement in Washington, D.C. Andy also appears on and hosts radio and television shows about science for outlets such as National Geographic, The History Channel, and the BBC. Perhaps more surprisingly, he's also an accredited film critic who has written for sites such as Film Threat and Ain't It Cool News. His love of cinema inspired him to co-create the show Science Vs. Cinema, which he hosts. On the show he talks to both scientists and the cast and crew of films about the science portrayed in them. He's been a scientific consultant for books, comic books, and TV shows. He regularly gives public talks about science or the science in film all over the world. In Episode 8, Billy Donnelly tells of a recent bout with PTSD. Throughout the show, he dives into the story of his dismissal from a prior workplace (Ain't It Cool News) and the mistreatment he experienced on the way out. He explores all the feelings he went through as a result and thought that he'd been able to move on. That is until a name from the past resurfaced in the last few weeks, bringing with all sorts of negative feelings about that ordeal and re-opening the wound. He then discusses the prevalence of PTSD in our everyday lives and how easily it is to trigger memories of past trauma at a moment's notice. Mentored early on by master action director Corey Yuen, Bao was instilled with an approach to action that doesn't rely solely on spectacle, but also draws on story and character. His editing credits include Cho Lon, one of Southeast Asia's highest-budgeted action blockbusters, and Jackpot, a heartfelt comedy selected as Vietnam's official entry to the 2016 Oscars for Best Foreign Film. Ain't It Cool News enthusiastically declared Bao as “a director I expect to see big things from.” How to not be complacent in your life and career How to go for your dreams and passions The importance of mentorship Using the dreams of your childhood to guide you in the decisions you make in adulthood The film industry of Vietnam and struggles of censorship The evolution of film editing throughout the years How to support Asian American filmmakers What “It's a Wonderful Life” and “The Terminator” have in common The Paper Tigers Movie Kickstarter POV Films website theasianamericanvoice.com/podcast/39 "Like" our Facebook page for updates on future shows and other resources: https://www.facebook.com/TheAsianAmericanVoice/

As the Fantastic Fest company parts ways with Harry Knowles, female accusers come forward to say their warnings fell on deaf ears for years. Troubling allegations continue to surface regarding Alamo Drafthouse, the Austin, Texas-based movie empire currently embroiled in a sex assault and sexual harassment scandal involving several employees and business partners. On Saturday, IndieWire first reported on Jasmine Baker, a former Drafthouse employee who says Ain't It Cool News founder Harry Knowles — who co-founded Fantastic Fest with Drafthouse's married owners Tim and Karrie League in 2005 — "groped" her "opportunistically on more than one occasion" in 2000. That news comes on the heels of a scandal involving Devin Faraci, a Drafthouse-employed film writer who stepped down in October 2016 after being accused of sexual assault, whom League then quietly rehired to pen promotional material for this year's Fantastic Fest. It also comes less than a month after Los Angeles' own nexus of movie nerddom, Cinefamily, ceased operations amid its own sexual harassment scandal. Since that report, multiple women have come forward to allege that Knowles has subjected them to various forms of sexual harassment and assault over the years. Several, including Baker, say they informed the Leagues about Knowles' actions and were consistently greeted with words of concern but ultimately inaction. Knowles, for his part, had denied any wrongdoing. On Monday, League announced that Knowles, 45, is "no longer affiliated with the company in any capacity." The CEO went on to say that he had skipped Fantastic Fest this year, currently underway in Austin, to instead go on a "listening tour" of the 22 Alamo Drafthouse locations around the country. (Some, like the Austin, San Francisco and Brooklyn locations, are owned by League; others are franchises.) One day after IndieWire's report, a Drafthouse customer named Gloria Walker accused Knowles on Twitter of having "on more than one occasion grabbed my ass and other parts of me." Walker cited another incident in which she tried to enter the cinema to watch Captain America; Knowles allegedly stood in the doorway and told her "I had to kiss him to get in." The Daily Beast, meanwhile, on Tuesday published screenshots of a text conversation between Knowles and an anonymous film blogger, in which he allegedly told her, "Come hither to Austin. Your eyeliner makes you look good enough to eat. Obviously I'm talking about cannibalism, baby. You have can have my Vienna sausage anytime." Andy Signore, creator of Screen Junkies and the “Honest Trailers” series, has been fired effective immediately, Defy Media announced Sunday evening. Signore has been accused by several women of sexual harassment, and at least one said he tried to sexually assault her

This week, Jinx welcomes Scott Foy back to the show! A writer and reviewer who’s written for such websites as Ain’t It Cool News, Creature Corner, and Dread Central, Mr. Foy (aka "The Foywonder”) discusses Hajime Sato's 1966 horror/sci-fi/superhero masterpiece Golden Bat for this week's ep. With its beautiful black and white photography, fun action sequences, and the astonishing level of utter lunacy on display, Golden Bat inspired a conversation which covers the film's zany plot and comic book origins, its should-be iconic hero, and the film's sad lack of availability here in the US. Along the way, Foy and Jinx discuss the Japanese worldview of wabi-sabi, the other attempts to bring Golden Bat to screens big and small, and quite possibly the most disturbing series of superhero movies ever (...ugh). It’s a helluva fun chat with a great guest about an underloved gem, and it’s one we hope you enjoy! Back in the early days of fandom, you could pretty much count on one hand the number of online sites to get the latest news. Ain't It Cool News was one of those sites. Long before the web was the destination for everything... Harry Knowles and his team were paving the way with scoops and previews of all the pretty genre things. Now, Ain't It Cool (yes, it's still around) is dealing with a staff exodus in the wake of 20-year-old sexual harassment allegations against Knowles. That, plus the news that Devin Faraci went back to work for the Alamo Drafthouse folks after the reveal that he was accused of the same thing, now puts Tim League and Alamo in the cross-hairs.Plus: there was a thing what happened this week. A thing calling itself Star Trek. And you know what? It might not be all bad... but let's talk about it.
