This week we return to the Vault and have only one question: IS THERE A CAVE?Two scholars ready to get medieval on us all: Thomas Lecaque and John Wyatt Greenlee. We're celebrating the great epic that wasn't: The 13th Warrior. This movie is so good and so bad at the same time that it's hard to quantify. But we're gonna do it anyway. We're talking Vikings, the Abassid Empire, man-bears, and maybe the greatest language scene in film history. Grab some mead, because it's made from honey, just like this podcast.About our guests:Thomas Lecaque is an associate professor of History at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. He specializes in the nexus of apocalyptic religion and political violence. He has written for the Washington Post, Religion Dispatches, Foreign Policy and The Bulwark, among others.John Wyatt Greenlee is a medievalist and a cartographic historian. His academic research is primarily driven by questions of how people perceive and reproduce their spaces: how movement through the world — both experiential and imagined — becomes codified in visual and written maps.

Recorded on 6 June 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Prof John Wyatt Artificial intelligence is everywhere and is seems as though science fiction fantasies are starting to come true. It's hard to separate the hype from reality but analysts predict that deploying AI in healthcare could save hundreds of thousands of lives every year and dramatically reduce healthcare costs in developed countries. At the same time many countries with less established health infrastructure are starting to see the remarkable potential of bespoke AI systems. What are the ethical, societal and spiritual issues which lie behind these extraordinary developments and how can Christians prepare for the coming wave of AI innovation and disruption? This week Jamie Goodall joins #HATM regulars John Wyatt Greenlee and Leah Lagrone to get to the bottom of a serious question: to which generation does The Goonies belong. We are up to no good in this episode and even through in some pirate history to boot. HATM never says die.About our guests:Dr. John Wyatt Greenlee is a medievalist and a cartographic historian. His academic research is primarily driven by questions of how people perceive and reproduce their spaces: how movement through the world — both experiential and imagined — becomes codified in visual and written maps. She graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, with a PhD in history focused on borderlands, labor, and gender studies in early 20th century. Her research examines state legislation and the discourse on minimum wages for women, specifically the connections of sex work with low wages. Her current book project, “A Woman's Worth: How Race and Respectability Politics Influenced Minimum Wage Policies,” demonstrates that the politics around race and the minimum wage for women drove conversations among labor, politicians, and progressive reformers about the future of white supremacy in Texas. Recorded on 29 February 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Prof John Wyatt. We live in a sex-saturated culture and it seems obvious that romance and sex provide the most powerful, vital and fulfilling aspects of human living. By comparison non-sexual friendship can seem either weak and unimportant, or potentially abusive.Yet the Bible celebrates committed covenantal friendship. How can we re-imagine Gospel-shaped friendship in the sexually obsessed and suspicious world in which we live? What are the red flags that indicate when friendship is going wrong and how can we create healthy Christian communities in which friendships can flourish? This week Thomas Lecaque and John Wyatt Greenlee drop in to talk about the most historically accurate film of all-time: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Ok, it's nowhere near accurate but that doesn't mean we can't love it all the same. We talk about when and where the myth of Robin Hood emerges, our favorite portrayals of the character, the score and the soundtrack, and yes, the accent. This one is fun. Recorded on 5 August 2021 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Prof John Wyatt. Conscientious objection as a right is enshrined in the laws of many countries and in professional medical guidelines, but has recently come under attack. The concept of the conscience goes to the heart of what it means to act in a moral way, with integrity. There have been shocking historical examples of medical abuses after conscience has failed. The right helps preserve individuals' moral integrity, preserves the reputation of the medical profession, and safeguards against coercive state power. John Wyatt, the founder of Cinespia, joins host Jessica Kantor for this week's episode of Raising Cinephiles.Founded by entrepreneur John Wyatt in 2002, Cinespia has built an avid online following of well over 250,000 fans through its eighteen-year history. The organization also hosts screenings, concerts, and film premieres at classic movie palaces in downtown Los Angeles.Wyatt attributes the success of Cinespia to his belief that “there's a need in L.A. for people to get together and watch films with each other. That's how these films were meant to be seen: on the big screen with a large audience, emoting, screaming, and laughing. The picnics, the DJs, the community experience, these things transform the movie-going experience.”Over the years, Cinespia has also become a popular attraction for Hollywood directors, producers, and actors. In 2014, Cinespia produced the annual Cinefamily fundraiser with Team Downey, showcasing the films of Robert Downey, Sr., with a benefit hosted by Louis CK at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Cinespia's stellar array of guest appearances to present the films being shown also include Drew Barrymore, Patricia Arquette, Lena Waithe, director Cameron Crowe, Paul Reubens, and Questlove.Past notable events include the FYC screening event for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the premiere of Wonderstruck, and activations for Academy Award-nominated films such as Suspiria and Beautiful Boy.Films discussed:King KongWinnie The PooClash of the TitansRaiders of the Lost ArkThe 400 BlowsBlade RunnerStar WarsTampopoManhunterLa Bande Du DrugstoreElviraThe ShinningGooniesBreakfast at Tiffany'sThe Wizard of OzThe Lego MovieSpongeBob SquarepantsMr Show New Episodes Every Wednesday!EPISODE CREDITS:Host, Producer, Editor: Jessica KantorBooker: Noelia MurphyBe sure to follow and tag Raising Cinephiles on Instagram

You've been asking for this film ever since I announced there would be a Historians At The Movies Podcast. Today we jump in head first to the Director's Cut of Ridley Scott's 2005 epic, Kingdom of Heaven. This is a beautiful and seriously flawed film, but it is fun to watch. I decided that a film this big needed an army of historians, so I invited back HATM Podcast alums David Perry, Matthew Gabriele, John Wyatt Greenlee to talk all things Crusades. We talk about the film's strengths and its flaws, and dive deep to discuss things that matter, such as how to see this film as a response to 9/11 and exactly how many orcas would it take to fight Liam Neeson.About our guests:Matthew Gabriele is a professor of medieval studies and the chair of the Department of Religion and Culture at Virginia Tech. His research and teaching generally explore religion, violence, nostalgia, and apocalypse, whether manifested in the Middle Ages or the modern world. This includes events and ideas such as the Crusades, the so-called “Terrors of the Year 1000,” and medieval religious and political life. He has also presented and published on modern medievalism, such as recent white supremacist appropriations of the Middle Ages and pop culture phenomena like Game of Thrones and the video game Dragon Age. His book, co-authored with David M. Perry, is out now: The Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe (Harper Books, 2021). His new book will also be with David M. Perry and is entitled Oathbreakers: The Carolingian Civil War and the Collapse of an Empire in the Middle Ages (Harper Books, 2024).David M. Perry is a journalist and historian. He is the co-author of The Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe, out now from Harper Collins. The Boston Globe called it “incandescent and ultimately intoxicating.” Perry was a professor of Medieval History at Dominican University from 2006-2017. His scholarly work focuses on Venice, the Crusades, and the Mediterranean World. He's the author of Sacred Plunder: Venice and the Aftermath of the Fourth Crusade (Penn State University Press, 2015). Now he works for the University of Minnesota, convincing students that studying history is good for them and good for their careers (it is!).John Wyatt Greenlee is a life-long map enthusiast. I love how maps can make fantasy worlds come alive, and how they can give context to histories. He holds a PhD in medieval history, with a focus on the history of maps and map making. He has written articles on cartographic analysis, setting maps within their historical and cultural contexts. He has built multiple digital projects annotating medieval map. In addition to maps, he spends time working on his other major academic interest: the role of eels in human history. He is The Surprised Eel Historian on Twitter — perhaps the world's only eel historian!Thomas Lecaque is an Associate Professor of History at Grand View University. In this episode we are joined by Emeritus Professor John Wyatt. John was a consultant neonatologist and academic researcher. He is now engaged in addressing new ethical, philosophical and theological challenges caused by advances in medical science and technology in particular the issues raised by rapid advances in AI and robotics, and the interface between cutting-edge science and Christian faith. We had a fascinating conversation about the recent developments in artificial intelligence and got John's perspective on what the future may hold for this technology. It was brilliant hearing John's thoughts on whether we should be amazed or terrified (or both!) of this technology and how his Christian faith helps him process what the future may look like.Visit: Home - John WyattRead: The Robot Will See You Now: Artificial Intelligence and the Christian Faith: Amazon.co.uk: Wyatt, John, Williams, Stephen N: 9780281084357: BooksVisit: TechHumanFIND OUT MORE

John Wyatt recently became an empty nester, but that doesn't mean he's forgotten any of the knowledge he learned as a dad to two daughters. In this episode, he's sharing all the things he wants others (including his future sons-in-law!) to know about fatherhood. Full SHOW NOTES for today's conversation Key Takeaways Will you choose to be right or choose the relationship? Being present for your children leads to trust and open communication. Teaching your kids to listen to God and honor their parents is a worthwhile battle. Audit your performance as a father with these three questions: Are my kids communicating with me? Are they spending time with me? Do they feel prioritized? John Wyatt John Wyatt and his wife, Carrie, are newly empty nesters living in Jacksonville, Florida. They have been married for 25 years and successfully launched their two daughters into the world. John is an Associate Executive Pastor at Celebration Church. Key Quotes 3:13 - "You can't control them, they control themselves. So it's very difficult letting them be young adults and maybe they're making choices, whereas 25 years down the road you're like, that's not a very good decision. But you have to let them decide for themselves and love them through it." 4:51 - "We try to just love our kids through stuff. And the most important thing is relationship. You know, you can be right or you can have a relationship. So instead of trying to be right all the time and defend your decisions or defend, you need to do this, and here's why, because I know what I'm talking about. We didn't find that that worked very well with our kids." If surveillance capitalism permeates all of modern society, how on earth can we step back to think critically about what it may be doing to us? In this episode we think through more of the implications of living in a non-private digital village in the 21st century, but is privacy even a Christian virtue in the first place? We also ponder the implications of the more deceptive and destructive aspects of addictive digital technologies and think through some initial efforts believers have made to carve out space for family time and spirituality in our disembodied always-on world. Every tap, swipe and click we make on our phones, tablets and laptops is being recorded by big tech firms. This is often called surveillance capitalism – a network of products and services we use every day which sucks up large quantities of data about us and then sells it on to advertisers at huge profits. It's garnering increasing concern from citizens and regulators around the world, but should we care as Christians? The prophet Isaiah speaks of the foolishness of those who bow down to the work of their own hands, idols made of wood that cannot speak and have no power of their own. And yet the irony of idolatry is that idols come to have a strange power over us and our actions. John Wyatt of the Faraday Institute sees this biblical image of the idol as a powerful lens for assessing the spiritual, ethical, and philosophical repercussions of AI. Although AI is developed with the goal of helping mankind shape a better future, in many ways it is us who are changed by the technology we've created. From children forming relationships with analogous persons like Siri and Alexa, to engineers who believe that programs can become sentient, to people who prefer interacting with chatbots over human relationships—in these and many other ways, we are only beginning to feel the impact of AI on the human person. John and Gretchen discuss these issues and more, and bring up important questions that Christians must ask in the age of AI. If we are image bearers created in the likeness of God, is mankind then making AI in its own image? How do we respond to the desire to “upgrade” humanity in light of the Incarnation and Resurrection?

John Wyatt is Professor of Ethics and Perinatology at University College London and also Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, Ethics & Perinatology at University College London. As a paediatrician, he specialised and led an intensive care unit for premature babies in London for 25 years. But alongside his medical practice, he has been a frequent contributor to the major medical ethical debates of our time, enabling him to play a significant part in updating John Stott's Issues Facing Christians Today. He first joined All Souls, Langham Place as a medical student in the 1970s and was invited by Uncle John to become one of the initial members of his books and culture discussion group. Having spent the last 50 years at All Souls, he got to know Stott well, becoming one of his key medical advisers. It was John Wyatt who convinced Stott to include two very personal chapters in his very last book, Radical Disciple, under the titles of Dependence and Death. John has written several books of his own, particularly focused on the major ethical dilemmas surrounding the beginning and end of life. Most recently, he has researched the implications and challenges raised by Artificial Intelligence for medical ethics. He is also a much sought-after speaker and lecturer all over the world.
