Many Rvers don't really want a big RV like a Class A. They want something that is more nimble and maneuverable. Something that is easier to drive. And for that, either the Class B RV or the Class C RV will work nicely. But there are advantages and disadvantages to either of these two very popular types of RVs. So in this podcast, I cover the pros and cons of each so you can make an informed decision about which type of RV will work best for you and the way that you like to travel and camp.

Stress is a suspected cause of shingles outbreaks and Mike tells everyone the key to treatment is starting on a drug regimen within 72 hours after the outbreak. He missed that deadline and is now waiting for it to go away. He was keeping this all quiet but those who see him in Indianapolis will still see the sores, so he decided to come clean. The last time was on his left arm. this time its the left side of his neck. But while I'm on the topic of dog parks, let's talk about problems that can happen at any park, namely, over-aggressive dogs. That happened to us last night at a park we visited. There are times when as a pet owner, you need to either cut your visit short or not go in at all. Last night, there was a German Shepherd and a Great Dane in the park, along with many other dogs. The shepherd was extremely possessive of its owner and became very aggressive whenever anther dog came near.

They're on a hike or jogging or exploring, usually not from camp or a road and they are never seen again. We'll put a link to the article from the magazine on the Roadtreking-dot-com blog but Mary, who used to work for the Forest Service posted this on our Roadtreking Facebook Group that I think is worth passing along here on the podcast. [spp-timestamp time="10:55"] Says Mary: “I am retired Forest Service and I have seen this happen so many times people disappear without a trace. If you are solo make sure people know where you are headed. I witnessed people disappear on Forest Service roads, and no one had an inkling they where they were. We found several dead in unexpected locations. Let your family know your plans and if you hike solo, as I do, take less risk and sign in to those trail head logs, your life may depend on it.” Mary's post brought some good responses and even more tips: Said Rick: “Always carry a little, but loud, whistle. [spp-player] Show Notes for Episode #88 May 18, 2016 of Roadtreking - The RV Lifestyle Podcast: This week's show was recorded at the beautiful Henderson Beach State Park in Destin, FL. That's our Roadtrek where we parked in a lot overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. We opened the rear and side doors and recorded the show right from here, enjoying the nice sea breeze and salty air. Henderson beach boast more than 6,000 feet of natural scenic shoreline border the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Natural features of the park include sand pines, scrub oaks, and dune rosemary. Boardwalks provide access to the beach for swimming, sunbathing, and fishing. Four large and two small pavilions allow for picnicking and grilling. The view out our back door as we recorded this episode There's great camping here. The park has 60 campsites that can accommodate either tents or RVs, with a mixture of back in and pull-through sites. The sites have water, electricity (all sites are 50 amp except campsite #28); picnic tables, ground grills and clothesline posts. Campsites do not have sewer connections; a centrally located dump station is for provided for the proper disposal of waste. Amenities include heated and air conditioned restrooms with showers, coin operated washers, dryers and vending machines. Pets are welcome at campsites. Unlike remote wilderness camping, provisions and restaurants are a short drive away. The only downside is the spots here are usually booked a year in advance. We often to day camping, as shown above. JENNIFER'S TIP OF THE WEEK This week's tip is about cooking and serving sizes. I've shared before that I like to prepare as many meals ahead of time as possible. That means less time spent in the RV on meal prep while Mike and Bo are having fun outside. [spp-timestamp time="5:15"] So we try to spend an afternoon at home before each trip planning meals and cooking them. One easy meal is meatloaf. And when I make meatloaf, I like to bake it in a muffin and cupcake pan. The pan I use is non-stick and it has spaces to make 12 cupcakes. But we make 12 little meat loafs. Just spn the meatloaf mixture into each hole and bake in a preheated oven at 350 for about 25 minutes. I've found that each one is a perfect serving. Sometimes Mike takes two. But after baking the little meat loaf muffins, they store easily in a zip lock bag which then goes into the freezer of our Roadtrek CS Adventurous. It takes only a couple of minutes to heat them up in our RV's microwave/convection oven. So simple. We serve with steamed green beans and a nice salad. Meatball muffins. Try ‘em. Mikie likes em. One of the neatest things about RVing is how it complements so many other hobbies like hiking, kayaking, photography and.... amateur radio. Yes, amateur radio, or ham radio is it is often called. There's a huge resurgence in the hobby these days with more people participating in the hobby that ever before. Jennifer's Tip of the Week - The Best Way to Pack Your Clothing In an RV, space is at a premium. And few things take up more room that suitcases packed with clothes [spp-timestamp time="5:52"] That's where eBags Packing Cubes come in so handy. We heard about them from fellow RVers who sang the praises of this very affordable way to pack and carry clothes on an RV trip. Some RVers are so hooked on eBags that they even put them in a suitcase when they do traditional and  airplane travel. But in an RV, they're the hands-down best way we've found to pack. I've done a video that shows how much you can get into an eBag. A three piece set of the packing cubes costs $19 from Amazon. They come in different colors. Mike uses blue, I use raspberry red (the closest they come to pink). They have a mesh top panel for easy identification of contents, and ventilation We store them in the overhead bins above the bed in the Roadtrek. It keeps everything wrinkle free and compact. They let you “unpack without unpacking” –that is, you can remove the cubes to get at your stuff, but still keep things neat and tidy. Trust me, in an RV, or on a boat, or if you want to make your suitcase neat, these are what you need. [spp-player] Listener Questions: Heating an RV – Is carbon monoxide an issue? Carbon Monoxide is an invisible, odorless, and deadly gas, produced by the partial combustion of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels. Carbon monoxide is the number one cause of poisoning deaths each year. [spp-timestamp time="7:53"] Almost all of today's RVs come with carbon monoxide monitors. But they can, and do malfunction. Thus,  as a matter of routine, you should test the carbon monoxide detector every time you use the RV If they have batteries, replace them at least once a year, twice if the unit is exposed to extreme cold. A good tip is to change the batteries when when you change clocks for daylight savings time. B+ is a made up category. There really is only Class A, Class C & Class B sometimes they are referred to Type A, Type C & Type B. [spp-timestamp time="10:26"] Basically, if the RV base vehicle is a van then it is a Class B. If the RV base vehicle is a cutaway chassis then it is a Class C.

Sometimes, RV dealerships will try to talk you into expensive add on procedures that really aren't needed. Indeed, one of their top profit makers is convincing new owners into buying very expensive spray-on treatments for the interior or exterior. After an RV dealer asks for Mike's advice on whether he should pay $900 for such a treatment for his new RV, Mike offers much cheaper and very practical advice. That's one of many topics tackled in episode 64 of the Roadtreking RV Podcast. [spp-player] Complete shownotes for episode 64: How to Protect your RV's Exterior To the listener who wondered about spraying on some exterior protection for $900 on his new RV, Mike offers his opinion [spp-timestamp time="9:25"]. Perhaps a better investment is a good cover for your RV, he says. Don't buy the cheap ones. A good cover is like good shoes. It should snugly fit your RV. [spp-tweet tweet="Why you should have a cover for your RV"] Over time the roof and exterior of your motorhome begin to show signs of wear, caused by constant exposure to the elements. Ozone in the air and ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun start to take their toll, which is first evident by signs of fading paint. The ozone in the air also causes products like rubber and vinyl to dry out, crack and start to deteriorate. The UV rays from the sun make this aging process happen quicker. If possible, try to keep your RV covered when not using it, to help protect it from Mother Nature. The cover model Mike recommends is Hugger Covers. Now… as to having someone spray stuff on… for $900. Mike says he does not recommend this. The best way to protect yourt RV is to clean it. Wash it afer use and wax it once or twice a year. These treatments the caller's dealer is trying to sell him is pure profit. Mike instead suggests that he use Turtle Wax Ice. It costs about $7.50 for a 48 oz bottle and produces a thick foam which encapsulates and loosens abrasive soils. The encapsulation technology helps prevent soils from re-depositing on the paint finish to reduce the formation of swirl marks and minor surface scratches. Jennifer's RV Tip of the Week Jennifer shares how she attracts hummingbirds to a feeder that attaches to an 'sRV outside window. It's called the Perky-Pet 8 oz Window Mount Hummingbird Feeder. It costs about $9 on Amazon. [spp-timestamp time="7:00"] Hummingbirds are very active so if there are any in the area you are visiting, it won't take them long to find you window feeder, even if you have just set it out. [spp-tweet tweet="Attract hummingbirds to your RV"] RV Question: Tire Pressure Monitoring System A listener asks what kind of tire pressure monitoring system Mike recommends. [spp-timestamp time="14:53"] While there are many different monitoring systems available. In your case, I would recommend the EEZTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System with six sensors. Even if you have provisions for one, things like mounting, cooling, wiring, fuel supply, exhaust routing, noise and vibration, and accessibility all need to be seriously considered and planned for. Onan generators have lots of good material online, including an RV generator handbook and a guide to choosing a generator for a Class B motorhome. In business, having more demand than supply is usually a good thing - and that just happens to be the current state of the super hot RV rental market. So says Joel Clark, co-founder, RVshare.com. Our trip west could have turned out much different were it not for the technology that makes RVs like ours energy self sufficient - the kind of tech that provides a look into the future of Class B RVing. We can boondock pretty much anywhere, anytime. Case in Point: We didn't have a reservation for one of the campgrounds near Grand Canyon and would've been stuck waiting forever to get one instead of enjoying everything this amazing landmark has to offer. As winter loses its grip over the country, RV season is here and in this episode of the Roadtreking RV Podcast we talk about the many different trends that are driving the industry and, in particular, why small motorhomes are so hot right now. [spp-player] Here are the shownotes: Reader Questions and Comments Bob, from Maine, asks about undercoating to prevent rust on his Class B RV, particularly in northern states where they use a lot of salt on the roads. I share how the suggested pressure for his unit (a Roadtrek 190 on the Chevy chassis) is 50 psi for the front, and 80 0si for the back. All RVs should have a sticker mounted just inside the driver's side door that list the ratings for tire pressure. Don't mess with the back one. If it says 80, leave it there as that is calculated based on the weight that an RV carries at the back of the vehicle. The front tire number can be adjusted up to about 65psi. Experiment a bit, in 5 psi increments. Never go below the rating on the door. Generally, the closer you are to that front rating on the door sticker, the smoother the ride will be. Further, I share details from a post by Roadtreking Reporter Campskunk, specific to small motorhomes and Class B RV's (Read More) RV News of the Week: Winnebago Recall, Walmart Chaos, Where to Retire Winnebago Recall - Winnebago Industries is recalling 519 model year 2015 Winnebago ERA, View, and Itasca Navion vehicles manufactured Sept. 11, 2014, to Feb. 27, 2015 and built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis. The abutting wedge, a component attached to the door jam to make opening the door easier after a severe frontal impact, may have been installed incorrectly. A greater force may be necessary to open the doors, increasing the risk of injury. Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and their dealers will check the installation of the abutting wedge, correcting it as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2015. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz Sprinter customer service at 1-877-762-8267. (Read the recall notice) Walmart Lot Shootout - Eight officers and a Walmart employee were assaulted in a Cottonwood, Ariz. parking lot Saturday night in a fight that left one suspect dead, another wounded and seven in custody, officials said. The fight happened Saturday night, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. When officers arrived, the suspects were in the parking lot and attacked officers, DPS said. One suspect was shot and killed during the fight, another was shot in the abdomen, and a total of seven others were taken into custody, DPS said. The suspects had been staying in a Suburban vehicle for at least four days in the parking lot, according to a man camping out in an RV in the parking lot. The man said he looked out of his RV's window after the brawl and shootout woke him up Saturday night. He heard screaming and saw people running around and firing guns.
