I made this recording during a few days of vacation with my wife and daughter. For two days in a row, it was about 34 degrees Celsius, and cooling off in this spring was a good idea. The Wouter Spring is a natural swimming pool in Belgian Limburg. It's an ideal biotope for several rare species of frogs and salamanders. These amphibians are completely harmless to humans, which unfortunately is not always the case the other way around. Every day, about a million liters of drinkable spring water bubble up from the natural springs at the bottom of the pool. From all accounts, the ancient Romans knew how to do leisure—the priviledged classes at least. According to historians, they didn't see leisure time as something they got to enjoy once their obligations were completed, but rather, as the ideal state in which to live, when they had control over all their actions. Can we learn something from this? Are we looking at leisure the wrong way? ------------------------------------- ADVERTISE WITH US: Reach expats, future expats, and travelers all over the world. You've heard the "stat" before: men tend to apply for jobs when they meet only 60% of the qualifications and women only once they reach 100% of them. We're supposed to conclude that women simply need more confidence to stretch outside their comfort zone, right? Wrong. In today's episode, I'm diving into the details and breaking down why perpetuating this myth is so harmful. Have you ever thought, "dang, I just got out of work and I already dread going back tomorrow!"? Most of us have, and in response we did something to make ourselves feel better, something to take the edge off: we treated ourselves to an ice cream cone or binge watched our favorite Netflix series. That's the norm of 21st Century capitalism. Today's episode is about America's drug problem, but I take a route through a number of related topics including capitalism, leisure time, the "culture industry" (a term coined by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer), and Marx's alienation.I also cover some theory from Friedrich Nietzsche, Theo Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Herbert Marcuse and Karl Marx. Hobbies and leisure activities aren't just neat ways to give your characters something to do in-between plot beats -- they can also communicate a lot to the reader about the world you're building! Developing hobbies and entertainment in a world also touches on what that culture thinks about work, income, community, and many other components of society. Guest Matt Wallace joins us to discuss the opportunities presented by giving your characters the chance to play, craft, and just muck about with things! How much of a hobby is devoted to pure pleasure? What changes when it's a side hustle that you monetize, or when it becomes competitive in some fashion? What does it mean when your characters have the money to spend on a hobby -- and who's providing them the goods and services they need for it? We explore these considerations and more as we pull apart what it means to kick back and relax in a fictional world. [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Matt Wallace is a Hugo Award winner and the author of the Sin du Jour series, the Savage Rebellion Trilogy, and the middle grade novels BUMP, THE SUPERVILLAIN'S GUIDE TO BEING A FAT KID, and NOWHERE SPECIAL. He's also penned over one hundred short stories in addition to writing for film, television, and video games. In his youth he traveled the world as a professional wrestler and an unarmed combat and self-defense instructor before retiring to write full-time. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Nikki.
The left thinks we need more leisure time and is using some spurious history to make their case. We go from Medieval Europe to Ancient China to see comparisons with workers today.

A great conversation from the archives when one thinks about topics on "love" and Valentine's Day, listen to Brigid Schulte, author of "Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time." Original aid date 19 March 2014. The book was published on 11 March 2014.
During our high-velocity nomadic year, I resolved that I would vent my pent-up gaming energy on a long binge whenever I pulled my PC back out of the storage unit. But part of this resolution was that I'd be careful about it and select finite, story-driven games. This highly-relatable piece on video game addiction from Eric Hoel (thanks to my pal RobG for the link) makes this "finite"/"infinite" distinction about gaming that I'd internalized but hadn't put into words before. I learned back in college that League of Legends, Starcraft, or World of Warcraft-types of games consumed my time, my motivation, and, ultimately, me. My first battle in League of Legends was fun but also revealed just how much I sucked. Instead of shutting it down and doing homework, I cracked my knuckles and decided I would level up. That's the moment where these things can go wrong, because there's no end to that project. It's an infinite-type game. The addiction starts because you get good enough to win, but then the game places you in rounds with increasingly competent players. The time investment required to start winning against better opponents grows and grows. If you stay committed, something else in your life has to give: Relationships, grades, job, etc. For many players, it's a toxic spiral into a bad place. Most certainly it has. You no longer need to leave your home to spend time with friends; you just do a video call with them. Even the way we meet people has changed. Most of my current circle of friends are people that I met online. Let's talk about books. What type of books do you read? Well, I make every effort to read books written in English. I tend to prefer historical fiction books. I used to try to read classics but I find that language has changed so much in the past two hundred years or so that when I read something from that era, it's like reading a different language! So, now I prefer more contemporary fiction. #ielts #learnenglish #study

When you are your own boss, there is always a lingering temptation just to shut down and take some time off. However, indulging in such temptations will certainly slow if not completely shut down your growth. When you just randomly take time off, the guilt of unfinished (or unstarted) tasks will often prevent you from relaxing and enjoying your sudden free time. However, when you are able to reach your maximum productive state through deep work all of that changes. In this episode, we take a closer look at the impact that truly relaxing and planned downtime can have on your rate of success. Such rest accomplishes much more than just recharging your batteries.
Dr. Kashey speaks to desk jockeys or anyone else that has a typical 9-5 workday. Although it can seem like work takes up the entire day, Dr. Kashey proposes that there is still a whole other day's worth of time after work. This time should be filled with meaningful hobbies and other skill-building activities that enrich your life. In turn, your job productivity and workplace satisfaction will increase. After a long day at work, spending time in front of a screen in the name of “relaxation” can be enticing, whether it be scrolling through social media, falling for various click-bait strategies, or watching TV. Dr. Kashey challenges us to instead fill that time with purposeful, passion-driven activities.
