IntroductionPeople with disabilities are disproportionately affected by climate change; however, they have been traditionally excluded from conversations about national plans and responses to climate change. Including the disabled community in decision making is key to addressing potential harms and designing effective, inclusive solutions. Disabled Community Disproportionately AffectedMany studies provide empirical evidence that climate change poses a particularly great risk for the disabled community. A study in Australia documented that between 2001 and 2018, 89% of heat wave fatalities were people with some type of disability, and actually many had multiple disabilities both physical and mental. Additionally, after Hurricane Harvey in Harris County, Texas in 2017, people with disabilities were disproportionately affected and exposed to harms. Areas flooded by Hurricane Harvey were overrepresented by disabled populations. The highest proportion of people living in public housing being exposed to environmental hazards were people with disabilities. While people with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to natural disasters, they have often been excluded from decision-making surrounding climate change, including in drafting national plans and climate responses. Inclusivity and Accessibility In PracticeEngaging people with disabilities in developing, designing and implementing climate resilient solutions can help protect their livelihoods and autonomy. Meaningful participation can look different in many ways including conducting research to have more data on how people with disabilities are affected and specific ways to help. As well, to develop new technologies and innovations that assist people with disabilities in climate emergencies like early warning systems, communication, and adaptive infrastructure. Spaces can be more inclusive and accessible to people with disabilities. More research is needed on infrastructure design that both reduces emissions and simultaneously will not put disabled people at more risk in climate emergencies, for example, adding ramps and automatic door openers, widening doorways, and having accessible bathrooms. It is also important to host public events in accessible locations to ensure that people with disabilities feel welcomed and valued. Methods of communication should also be accessible like using captions in videos, adding text descriptions and making online materials that work with screen readers so that low vision individuals can also access them. Disability-Inclusive Climate SolutionsIn addition to educating the community about the importance of disability-inclusive climate solutions and for the disabled community to be educated and equipped for climate disaster risk mitigation, it is vital for the disabled community to be part of the large-scale decision making process and promote meaningful participation. By providing people with disabilities with a greater understanding of the impacts that climate change will have on their lives, then they can be more able to respond to effects of climate change and access the resources they need. Expert Dr. Michael Stein points out that everyone knows their own needs and livelihoods best; hence, it is vital to reach out to the disabled community and include them in the conversation and decision making for climate solutions that will support the disabled community who are disproportionately affected by the effects of climate change. About our guestMichael Stein is the co-founder of the Harvard Law School Project on Disability. As a world leader on disability law, Dr. Stein participated in the drafting of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Dr. Stein became the first known person with a disability to be a member of the Harvard Law Review. He has received numerous awards in recognition of his work in disability rights. Blind Faith was a supergroup formed from Cream members Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, Traffic founder Steve Winwood, and Family bassist/violinist Ric Grech. Cream collapsed after increasing strife between members, particularly Baker and bassist Jack Bruce. Traffic went on hiatus, and Winwood began jamming with Clapton in his basement. Baker sat in on a session shortly after they moved to Traffic's rehearsal space in Berkshire, and was added to the lineup after some reluctance from Clapton was overcome. Finally, Grech was invited to join, and left the Family in the middle of a U.S. tour, creating understandable grievances. The group created blues-oriented and psychedelic rock for their eponymously named Blind Faith debut album. A summer tour was launched, but it was a challenging thing. Clapton didn't want to do long jam sessions on the tour, but their single album was not a lot of material for a concert. As a result, they wound up playing a significant amount of Cream and Traffic songs. This delighted the audience, but irritated and distanced Clapton. Despite great buzz from critics and fans alike, the group was destined to only last a few months. Clapton began drifting away while on tour, spending more time with opening act Delaney & Bonnie. He would eventually join that group prior to launching Derek & the Dominos. Ginger Baker would move on to form Ginger Baker's Air Force, bringing in Winwood and Grech for a short stint before Winwood rejoined Traffic. Rob brings us this short-lived supergroup in this week's podcast. Had to Cry TodayThe title track dispenses with the 3-minute single format in favor of a long form jam written by Steve Winwood. The lyrics are ambiguous, and could reference a dying relationship, or perhaps a friend drifting away. Can't Find My Way HomeWinwood also wrote this well-known single from the album, covered by a number of artists including Joe Cocker, Alison Krauss, and Bonnie Raitt. Winwood has been asked about the meaning of the lyrics, but has said that discussing song lyrics is a little like explaining a joke - it doesn't add anything to the experience. Clapton leaves his electric guitar in favor of a rare acoustic one for this song.Well All RightThis track is the only one not written by members of Blind Faith. Buddy Holly, Norman Petty, Jerry Allison, and Joe B. Mauldin wrote this song, and Holly sang it in 1958. Clapton takes lead vocal duties on this song.Sea of JoyA piece of Winwood's writing also leads off side two of the album. While some believe the song references hallucinogens, a simpler meaning would be simply the joy of being on the water. “And I'm feeling close to when the race is run. Waiting in our boats to set sail. Sea of joy.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Pfft You Were Gone (from the variety show “Hee Haw”)This country comedy and music show premiered on CBS in this month. Buck Owens and Roy Clark led an ensemble of regulars and guests in this variety show. STAFF PICKS:These Eyes by The Guess WhoWayne starts out the staff picks with a song co-written by lead singer Burton Cummings and lead guitarist Randy Bachman. This was their breakout song, with lyrics that describe the devastating feeling in the days following a long relationship break-up.Badge by CreamLynch reminds us that while Cream may have disbanded by this time, their music was still on the charts. Eric Clapton and George Harrison wrote this song. It was supposed to be called "Bridge," but was named "Badge," due to a misreading of the handwritten title. George Harrison plays rhythm guitar, credited as "D'Angelo Misterioso" to avoid contractual issues.Oh Happy Day by the Edwin Hawkins SingersBruce features the first gospel song to hit the charts, reaching number 4 on the US singles chart. Edwin Hawkins took a hymn originally written by Phillip Doddridge in 1755, and updated it with a piano introduction inspired by Sergio Mendes and lyrical improvisations influenced by James Brown. See by The Rascals Rob finishes the staff picks with the fuzzy lead off and title track to the Rascals sixth studio album. Between 1966 and 1968, the Rascals released a number of soul-inspired singles. This album marked a change in the band's focus from blue-eyed soul to psychedelic rock. COMEDY TRACK:Gitarzan by Ray StevensOne of the earliest comedy singles from Stevens closes out our podcast this week. This week Karen is joined by Liz Grech, an alumni of Karen's Artisan Perfumery Mastermind course and founder of Olentium, a perfume brand based in Malta. Liz started her career as a journalist before the birth of her son unexpectedly moved her into the world of fragrance. In this interview with Karen, she discusses her career trajectory, how it takes time to find your voice, what you can do as an indie brand to compete with the big boys and how it felt to be a finalist at the Art & Olfaction Awards in 2024. KEY TAKEAWAYS Liz had a successful career in journalism. When her son was born she began to be interested in various skin care products and how they would affect a newborn. She explains to Karen how this eventually led her into the world of fragrance. Coming from a journalistic background, Liz has a deep understanding of the importance of having a story to your fragrances. She describes to Karen how she uses classic literature, the seasons and her home in Malta to create these stories. Olentium wasn't Liz's first iteration of her business. She explains to Karen how her brand and philosophy have changed over the years and how she finally found her groove. One of the restrictions all indie brands face is access to certain materials and packaging as suppliers will not sell in small quantities. Karen and Liz discuss these challenges and some unique ways they have found to work around them. BEST MOMENTS “One of the best pieces of advice I can give is ‘know when to stop tinkering'.” “Do what you can with social media, don't think you have to be everywhere doing everything.” “The people that have opted into your email list are the ones that have said ‘I'm interested.', so don't ignore them.” EPISODE LINKS Olentium Website Olentium Instagram VALUABLE RESOURCES Getting Started Guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind ABOUT THE GUEST Anglo-Maltese Olentium founder Liz Grech started out in magazine journalism and digital communications. TRANSCRIPT Welcome to Popeular History, a library of Catholic knowledge and insights. Check out the show notes for sources, further reading, and a transcript. Today we're discussing another current Cardinal of the Catholic Church, one of the 120 or so people who will choose the next Pope when the time comes. Mario Grech was born on February 20, 1957, in Qala, Malta, Qala being a small community on the eastern edge of the island of Gozo, Gozo being the *second* largest island in Malta after, well, the Island of Malta, with Malta itself being a small island nation a bit south of Sicily. At a young age, the family moved to Ta' Kerċem, another small community on the same island. Malta is an outsize name in the history of the Catholic Church, thanks to its hosting of the military order of Saint John of Jerusalem, aka the Hospitallers or more simply the Knights of Malta in the early modern period. Their holding out against Suleiman the Magnificent's Ottoman Empire–who, in fairness, had *successfully* kicked the Hospitallers out of the Greek Island of Rhodes earlier in his career–that success at the Great Siege of Malta was so famous that noted enemy of the Church Voltaire once said “Nothing is better known than the siege of Malta” (Annals of the Empire, 1753) Also, to get this out of the way, there was recently a Maltese Cardinal by the name of Prosper Grech. I haven't seen it explicitly confirmed that the two Cardinals *aren't* related, but I haven't seen anyone suggest that they are either. So… maybe, but probably not? Grech *is* a common Maltese surname, to the extent that a random third party commenting on the passing of the older Cardinal also had the last name of Grech. Anyways, let's actually talk about today's cardinal some, shall we? The island of Gozo has fewer than 40,000 people altogether, but in heavily Catholic Malta, that's enough to support a local seminary, which is where Mario went when he decided to start his priestly studies. Unusually, he did both his philosophy and theology studies at that same institution. It wasn't until after his 1984 ordination that he went further afield, being sent to Rome to study both canon and civil law at the Pontifical Lateran University. Following the pattern of some of our more bookish Cardinals, Father Grech then obtained a doctorate in canon law from the Angelicum. While studying his doctorate and for a span after, Father Grech ministered at the cathedral, at the National Shrine of Tá-Pinu, and also served as a parish priest at the parish of Kercem. You're not going to be too surprised that he also taught canon law at the local seminary and held a number of roles within the Diocese of Gozo during this period as well. In 2005 his white phone rang and Pope Benedict made him Bishop of Gozo. He was consecrated on January 22nd 2006, with his predecessor, Bishop Cauchi, serving as his principal consecrator. I got curious because by longstanding custom–and, well, canon law–new bishops are consecrated by three existing bishops to ensure apostolic succession, and there's only two dioceses in Malta. It turns out the retiring bishop Cauchi- who had ordained Mario Grech as a priest too, by the way– it turns out he was joined not only by the Archbishop of Malta but also by Malta's Apostolic Nuncio, which makes sense and eventually I'll come to expect that. Bishop Grech has traveled a fair bit during his tenure, visiting emigrants from Malta living in the USA twice, and Australia once, along with a couple trips to South America. From 2013 to 2016, Bishop Grech was President of the Episcopal Conference of Malta, which l, I mean, part of me says with just the two dioceses they would have had a hard time getting a euchre game going at their meetings, another part of me says there's probably a few more folks than I'm imagining if you count retired bishops and auxiliaries, and I don't know if they invite senior priests to take notes or what. Someone's got to bring the snacks, is all I'm saying. Anyways, in 2016, Pope Francis published Amoris Laetitia, a post-synodal apostolic exhortation, in other words a Papal follow-up letter recapping the goings on of a synod, a gathering of bishops. In this case, the synod in question was the Synod on Family and the reason we're talking about Amoris Laetitia is because it seemed to open the door to communion for Catholics who had been divorced and then gotten civilly remarried, at least in certain cases and with careful discernment. That's getting into a theological issue, the finer points of which you could definitely spend a lot more time going into than I will here, but in short most Catholic bishops were and I think it's fair to say still are wary of allowing such an accommodation. I mean, I'm here for it, but I make no secret of being a big old softy when it comes to accommodations in general–and honestly I think it's fair to say Pope Francis has a similar mindset. But again, most bishops are of a more conservative bent. Except for our friend Bishop Grech, who was instrumental in helping implement exactly that sort of accommodation for divorced and civilly remarried Catholics–in certain cases, as specified– in Malta–though it's worth noting he's also on the record as being against divorce generally, which is pretty well expected of Catholic bishops. Just, you know, to be clear. Anyways, Bishop Grech's time in Malta's surprisingly existent Bishops' Conference did not go to waste, because he also served on the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Commission of Bishops' Conferences of the European Union (COMECE). In 2019, he made the big time, being named the Pro-Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops–not for the Malta, not for the EU, but for the whole Catholic Church: a sufficiently big enough job that he stepped down as Bishop of Gozo in order to take it on. The next year, he was named member of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity and in that same year–2020, if you lost count– he was named full on Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, so the top dog post. A couple months later, Pope Francis gave him his red hat, making him a Cardinal deacon with Santi Cosma e Damiano as his deaconry. The next year, Mario was also added to the The Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the highest judicial authority in the Catholic Church apart from the Pope himself, should he choose to intervene, which he usually doesn't, but, you know, he could. As a dedicated Curial Cardinal, Cardinal Grech also serves on the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, as well as the Dicastery for Bishops. Mario Cardinal Grech is eligible to participate in future conclaves until he turns 80 in 2037. Today's episode is part of Cardinal Numbers, and there will be more Cardinal Numbers tomorrow. Thank you for listening; God bless you all! Thanks, Joe!

Chuck and Dan chat ocean thermal energy conversion. Pretty sure Chuck still couldn't explain what OTEC is but at least recognizes how super cool it could be. Basically you can use the thermal heat of the ocean to run an electric turbine which would be an ideal, environmentally friendly application for warm ocean islands. And it's an area that I'm still figuring out because I think all of us are still figuring out AI and AI tools, but they're, they're at least two ways in which my journalistic background has come into there actually three ways in which my journalistic background and come into direct specific play when it comes to AI. So it helps to just give a little bit of background Sure. Ai, in its current form is really dependent on Okay, so AI is called artificial intelligence. And artificial intelligence is basically getting algorithms or robots to do work for you. And the most popular best-known version of AI is Chachi Beatty. It's what's known as generative AI, which means you ask them a question, and it creates an original new answer. And there are three things that journalists know how to do really well, that are very helpful with generative AI and Chachi PT. So the first is we're really good at precise communication. Right? Like we're very expert as journalists in communicating things clearly and simply and that's a really important skill when you're writing a prompt. Yes. The second is we're really good at fact-checking. And one of the big problems with AI is it, quote hallucinates. It's actually the word that they use the technical word for making shit up. And so journalists are really good at sniffing out bullshit and fact-checking. Sure. And then the third, the third thing that we're really really good at is interviewing. And if you actually look at what the quote prompt and Engineering are, which is the back-and-forth between an AI bot and a human being. It isn't a form kind of interview where you're continuously deepening and asking new questions and getting original responses and replanting returns. So I, you know, I've taught all these topics in journalism, I practice them as a journalist, and I'm finding generative AI and catch up at like, a very comfortable space for me.Can you elaborate on what me too marketing is and what your perspective is?Yeah. So first of all, my passion isn't marketing. My passion is business storytelling, and more specifically, helping businesses grow. And I feel this is an important distinction because it was a big realization on my in my life that marketing is interesting to me. building my business and helping others build theirs is a life passion. I am so on fire on that. And marketing is an instrument for doing that. But it's not, in and of itself, a passion of mine, what I'm passionate about. And I do this a lot seeing a business and helping them get to the next phase. And particularly I do really well with small businesses from micro-enterprises to sub $50 million base witnesses and, and really like they can mark it before and after where biz hack and I have been in their life and glory like there's literally not enough money in the world to replace that feeling of just deep...

It's Thursday, June 15th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark European Christian faces prison for embracing heterosexuality Last Friday, a Christian went on trial in the Mediterranean island country of Malta. Matthew Grech faces fines and prison time under charges of discussing and advertising “conversion practices.” Back in 2022, he had simply spoken to a media outlet about his conversion to Christianity and leaving a homosexual lifestyle. Malta became the first country in Europe to criminalize so-called “conversion therapy” in 2016. Ahead of the trial, Grech said, “My Christian journey of transformation, from being a practicing homosexual interested in the occult . . . to becoming a committed Evangelical Christian, is one that should be told without fear of being criminalized.” Paul wrote in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” Contracting European economies The Eurozone is a currency union of 20 member states of the European Union. Based on the latest data from the European Union's statistical agency, there has been a slide into recession during the first quarter of this year. The 20-nation bloc has experienced a decline in its Gross Domestic Product for two consecutive quarters now. Ireland led the first quarter drop in GDP. Other contracting economies included the Netherlands, Malta, Germany, and Greece. Economists expect further economic decline in the Eurozone over the rest of the year. Alabama, Texas, Indiana, & Mississippi friendliest to religious liberty The Napa Legal Institute released its first annual “Faith and Freedom Index” yesterday. The report ranks U.S. states based on their friendliness to religious freedom and regulatory freedom for nonprofits. Overall, Alabama, Texas, Indiana, and Mississippi scored the highest while Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin scored the lowest. Mary Margaret Beecher, Executive Director of Napa Legal, said, “Faith-based nonprofits face threats to their religious freedom and the often-crushing weight of regulatory burdens. If we value faith-based organizations . . . our state laws should encourage, not hinder, these organizations.” JPMorgan Chase punished for enabling Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking JPMorgan Chase agreed to a $290 million settlement on Monday with victims of Jeffrey Epstein. The lawsuit accuses the banking giant of knowingly facilitating Epstein's sex trafficking operations through financial means for decades. Last month, Deutsch Bank agreed to a $75 million settlement in a similar case. Catholic health network performed transgender surgeries & abortions A new report from the Lepanto Institute exposes the largest Catholic healthcare network in the U.S. for performing so-called sex-change surgeries. The report accuses facilities with CommonSpirit Health of performing transgender-related services, abortions, and sterilizations. The Lepanto Institute stated, “Given everything contained in this report, it is clear that CommonSpirit Health is NOT a Catholic institution and must be immediately stripped of its Catholic identity.” Disturbing church attendance trends post-COVID Dr. George Barna released another report on Tuesday about the reshaping of Christian beliefs and behaviors since the COVID-19 pandemic. The study noted three trends. First, the proportion of U.S. adults who attend church services weekly is 33% this year, down from 39% at the start of the pandemic. Plus, the proportion of Americans who attend church infrequently or never attend, jumped from 41% to 56% since the pandemic. Second, Christian affiliation in the U.S. is now 68%, down from 72% in 2020. Both Protestants and Catholics experienced declines in affiliation. Among Protestants, mainline denominations saw the largest increases in affiliation since the pandemic. And third, the incidence of adults possessing a Biblical worldview declined over the course of the pandemic from 6% to 4%. Biblical worldview incidence among evangelicals decreased from 21% to 14%; among mainline denominations it decreased from 8% to 6%. It held at 1% among Catholics. Christian jockey thanks Jesus Christ, credits horse, for Belmont win And finally, the thoroughbred colt Arcangelo won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. The victory makes Jena Antonucci the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race. Her victory comes on the 50th anniversary of the historic Belmont win by racehorse Secretariat, owned by Penny Chenery. Jockey Javier Castellano guided Arcangelo through the one-and-a-half-mile race in just over two minutes and 29 seconds. Castellano already won this year's Kentucky Derby, riding another racehorse named Mage. The jockey credited the amazing horse in Saturday's race, but first he gave thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ for giving him the opportunity to win. CASTELLANO: “First of all, I always say, thank the Lord Jesus Christ for giving me the opportunity to win a second Triple Crown, the third Triple Crown this year, second Triple Crown for myself. I give all the credit to the horse.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, June 15th in the year of our Lord 2023. It's Wednesday, January 25th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Pakistan's new law punishes Christians with 10-year prison sentence Last Tuesday, Pakistan's National Assembly passed a bill to make the country's blasphemy laws more stringent. Under the new bill, the person who insults Islam's false prophet Mohammed faces 10 years in prison and a fine of over $4,000. Pakistan's blasphemy laws already criminalize insulting Islam which carries a death sentence or life in prison. Religious minorities, including Christians, are concerned the new measure will be used to target them. Christian Solidarity Worldwide President Mervyn Thomas said the bill was “approved without debate by Pakistan's parliament despite the fact that existing blasphemy legislation has resulted in extra-judicial killings and countless incidents of mob violence based on false accusations.” Former homosexual pleads with nations to pray for his trial As The Worldview reported yesterday, a Christian charity worker in Malta, the island near Sicily, is facing criminal charges for allegedly discussing and advertising “conversion practices.” Last year, 33-year-old Matthew Grech told PMnews Malta about how he stopped practicing homosexuality after converting to Christianity. In the interview, Grech said, “I understood that in the Bible, homosexuality . . . is a sin. Just like every other sin, one can repent from it and ask God for forgiveness and ask Him for strength to overcome.” Grech now faces trial on February 3. Malta was the first country in the European Union to ban so-called “conversion therapy” in 2016. He said he hopes his case will overturn the ban. GRECH: “Joined with me in prayer, join with us here in Malta, that God would use the situation to overturn things and to revoke this evil ban on so-called ‘conversion therapy.' And that it would have a ripple effect across the nations, so that righteousness would prevail again.” Isaiah 61:11 says, “For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations.” Thousands attend France's March for Life On Sunday, thousands of people took to the streets of Paris for the French March for Life. The annual event coincides with the anniversary of the country's legalization of abortion in January 1975. This year's march protested plans by the French government to legalize euthanasia and to include support for abortion in their constitution. America's explosive $31 trillion debt Last Thursday, the U.S. government hit its $31.4 trillion debt ceiling established by Congress. The Treasury Department implemented extraordinary measures to temporarily keep the government from defaulting on its debt while lawmakers debate terms for raising the limit. For decades, both Republicans and Democrats have been increasing the debt ceiling to finance wars, tax cuts, social security, emergency measures, and other federal spending. Under Republican Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump, the national debt grew $12.7 trillion dollars. It has grown $13 trillion under the Democrat administrations of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Parents concerned with children's potential anxiety A new report by Pew Research found that the top concern of U.S. parents is if their children struggle with anxiety and depression. When it comes to aspirations, most parents prioritize financial stability and job satisfaction for their children. Parents also said it was very important for their kids to be honest and ethical, hardworking, and helpful to those in need. However, very few parents said it was important for their children to share their own religious beliefs. Protestant parents were notably more likely to want their children to carry on their religious beliefs. Psalm 78:4 says, “We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and His might, and the wonders that He has done.” Oldest human alive today just died at age 118 And finally, Lucile Randon, known as Sister André, died at the age of 118 in the southern French city of Toulon last Tuesday. She was the oldest known person in the world at the time. The nun devoted her life to service, caring for children during World War II and spent decades supporting the elderly and orphaned at a hospital. She's lived under 18 French presidents, including President Emmanuel Macron who sent her a handwritten birthday note last year when she turned 118. Sister André not only survived the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918 but also beat COVID-19 at the age of 116. Of course, the oldest person in world history was Methuselah, who died at the age of 969 according to Genesis 5:27.
