Send us a textImagine sitting across from the woman who pioneered an entire field of human-animal connection. Penelope Smith, often called the grandmother of interspecies telepathic communication, shares her extraordinary journey on the Spiritual Spotlight Series with refreshing clarity and wisdom. From her earliest memories, Smith refused to accept the prevailing notion that animals were "less than" humans. While society insisted animals couldn't think or feel deeply, she knew differently. Her unwavering certainty eventually led her to become a trailblazer in the 1970s, developing methods to help people reconnect with their natural ability to communicate telepathically with animals. What makes this conversation particularly fascinating is how Smith frames animal communication not as a special gift for the few, but as our birthright that's been socialized out of us. "Most people are socialized out of all their intuitive abilities," she explains. "We're a very analytical society." The path back to this connection requires shifting from our logical minds to deep listening—heart to heart, soul to soul.Perhaps most profound is Smith's observation that animals have never forgotten their spiritual nature, while humans have. Animals don't get caught in mental loops or identity crises. When asked about their purpose, they respond with clarity—whether it's a dog who says "I'm here to help my person through tough times" or another who simply wants a peaceful retirement after a difficult previous life. This clarity offers humans a mirror for our own spiritual journey. After decades of teaching worldwide, Smith is offering an unprecedented opportunity—a comprehensive six-month certification program starting September 8th through the Shift Network. For those who've wished to study with this pioneering teacher, this represents a rare chance to learn methods and wisdom she hasn't had the opportunity to share before.Ready to discover what your animal companions have been trying to tell you? Welcome to Season 2, Episode 16 of The Paranormal Rundown! The Gang of Nerds is down to a Duo tonight, just Vic and Dave. So we decided to do something a little different (unusual for us, right?!) Vic is going to take the role of the Atheist, Material Reductionist, and Dave is going to be the Everything is Paranormal, God Loving Hippie. The goal was to debate the possible reality of the topic, and maybe choose a winner. We did have a fairly decent list of paranormal topics, but in true Rundown fashion we only got through Consciousness, a little about the Akashic Record, and a shallow dive into Magick. We also dive into an EVP captured on the last episode with Fr. Justin, and discuss EVPs in general. Along the way we bounce around the subjects of Animal Consciousness, EEG Recorded at Time of Death, Higher Levels of Consciousness, Dolphins, PrayTV, Plant Consciousness, Universal Consciousness, Spooky Action At A Distance - SAAADs, Harry Houdini, Psychics vs Mediums, Remote Viewing, Irrefutable EVPs, Magick, Christian Rituals, Magical Contract Negotiation and Fulfillment, and the Crossroads Demon. Hopefully we did the Gang proud. I am almost certain Sky Daddy lover Dave smacked that Atheist Vic down pretty hard...As always, if you have any questions, comments, or you really liked this episode format, please let us know at feedback@paranormalrundown.comIf you didn't like this show, please let us know twice!!Vic would also like to know your thoughts on Cedric and Avalon. This includes his 2021 report Review of the Evidence of Sentience in Cephalopod Molluscs and Decapod Crustaceans, which led to cephalopods and decapods being recognized as sentient beings in UK law. He was also one of the lead signatories of the New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness. In this episode, we talk about his 2024 Oxford University Press book The Edge of Sentience: Risk and Precaution in Humans, Other Animals, and AI. This is an open access book, meaning that all listeners can read and download it for free entirely legally. In his marvelous new book, When Animals Dream: The Hidden World of Animal Consciousness (Princeton UP, 2023), David Peña-Guzmán (SF State as well as the lovely philosophical podcast Overthink) offers up something new in animal studies--"a philosophical interpretation of biological subjectivity." Although we share no linguistic schema with animals there is lots more evidence than just YouTube (octopuses, dogs, signing chimpanzees, brain scans of dreaming birds etc) to suggest oneiric behaviors and underlying mental states occur all over the animal kingdom. So, David discusses with John his interest in using dreaming as a window into consciousness. Here is what it means that we are not alone in our dreams... David details the "flattening and impoverishing effect on the natural sciences" wrought by 20th century behaviorist paradigms. He also expresses skepticism about the likelihood of AI ever achieving more than a "zombie" state; it now and perhaps always will profoundly differ from animals' varied experiences of our shared world. The biological commonality that most strikes David is the idea it is logically inconceivable that there might be a dreamer devoid of consciousness or sentience. Dreaming, he argues may be the key to acknowledging animal's "moral considerability"--the right to have their consciousness, sentience and in the deepest sense their standing taken into account. . Finally David admits to a feeling of tragedy in writing this book: he has had to engage with experimentation that crosses boundaries in animal treatment in order to make the case for those boundaries. He understands his decision as tragic because either way--to engage or to ignore the science--would be to lose something. Mentioned in the episode: New Wave of "inner space" SF authors who focus on the alien nature of humanity itself: J. G. Ballard, Philip K. Dick, and John's hero Ursula Le Guin. Recallable Books: Susana Monso, Playing Possum a newly translated book on the ways that animals mourn their beloveds. Charles Darwin, Descent of Man and The expression of the emotions in man and animals (both 1872) are two of the crucial 19th century texts begin to think of animals as complete subjects. Charles Darwin as an early theorist of biosemiosis who deserves, Jain and David agree, to be reactivated. Listen and Read here. Learn more about your ad choices. Recent zoological research has shown us that a wide range of animals are likely to have sentience. We don't know for sure. There is sufficient evidence to think that it is likely that, for example, lobsters can feel pain. What should we do in the light of this? Jonathan Birch of the LSE,  author of The Edge of Sentience, discusses this important question with Nigel Warburton.

Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas

It's not immoral to kick a rock; it is immoral to kick a baby. At what point do we start saying that it is wrong to cause pain to something? This question has less to do with "consciousness" and more to do with "sentience" -- the ability to perceive feelings and sensations. Philosopher Jonathan Birch has embarked on a careful study of the meaning of sentience and how it can be identified in different kinds of organisms, as he discusses in his new open-access book The Edge of Sentience. This is an example of a question at the boundary of philosophy and biology with potentially important implications for real-world policies.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2024/10/14/292-jonathan-birch-on-animal-sentience/Jonathan Birch received his Ph.D. in the philosophy of science from the University of Cambridge. In an enlightening exposition, Glen Merzer highlighted the devastating effects of animal agriculture on global ecosystems, stressing its role as the chief cause of biodiversity loss, water pollution, and climate change. Merzer also illuminated the overlooked connections between our dietary choices and the degradation of ocean ecosystems, such as the intricate bond between whales and phytoplankton, underscoring the urgency of shifting to sustainable and vegan choices. As the planet grapples with increasing climate crises, the call is clear: stop eating animals and allow the Earth to heal. #AnimalAgriculture #ClimateCrisis #VeganChoice

A cluster of brain cells in a dish, pulsing with electrical activity. A bee buzzing its way through a garden in bloom. A newborn baby staring up into his mother's eyes. What all these entities have in common is that we don't quite know what it's like to be them—or, really, whether it's like anything at all. We don't really know, in other words, whether they're conscious. But maybe we could know—if only we developed the right test.  My guest today is Dr. Tim Bayne. Tim is Professor of Philosophy at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He's a philosopher of mind and cognitive science, with a particular interest in the nature of consciousness. Along with a large team of co-authors, Tim recently published an article titled 'Tests for consciousness in humans and beyond.' In it, they review the current landscape of consciousness tests—or “C-tests”, as they call them—and outline strategies for building more and better tests down the road.  Here, Tim and I discuss what consciousness is and why theories of it seem to be proliferating. We consider several of the boundary cases that are most hotly debated right now in the field—cases like brain organoids, neonates, and split-brain patients. We sketch a few of the most prominent current consciousness tests: the command following test, the sniff test, the unlimited associative learning test, and the test for AI consciousness. We talk about how we might be able to inch our way, slowly, toward something like a thermometer for consciousness: a universal test that tells us whether an entity is conscious, or to what degree, or even what kind of conscious it is. Along the way, Tim and I talk about zombies, chatbots, brains in vats, and islands of awareness. And we muse about how, in certain respects, consciousness is like temperature, or perhaps more like happiness or wealth or intelligence, and maybe even a bit like fire.  I think you'll enjoy this one, friends—it's a thought-provoking conversation on a foundational topic, and one that takes us far and wide. So without further ado, here's my interview with Dr. Tim Bayne. Enjoy!   A transcript of this episode will be available soon.   Notes and links 4:45 – The philosopher Dan Dennett, who passed way in April, was known for his writings on consciousness—among them his 1991 book, Consciousness Explained. 7:00 – The classic paper on the neural correlates of consciousness, by Francis Crick and Christof Koch.   9:00 – A recent review of theories of consciousness by Anil Seth and Dr. Bayne. 10:00 – David Chalmers' classic paper on the “hard problem” of consciousness.  13:00 – Thomas Nagel's classic paper on what it's like to be a bat. 20:00 – A recent paper by James Croxford and Dr. Bayne arguing against consciousness in brain organoids. 23:00 – A recent paper by Dr. Bayne and colleagues about the emergence of consciousness in infants.  27:00 – A recent paper by Dr. Bayne and colleagues about consciousness in split-brain patients. Are animals self aware? Scientific evidence supports the assumption that it “feels like something” for a fish to be caught on a hook. Shawn and Leah have a bit of a lively discussion regarding animal consciousness. They talk about their dads, wedding preparations, taxes, television shows and more! Scientists and philosophers across the globe agree it is reasonable to assume the vast majority of creatures on Earth are sentient in some way — including lobster, squid and the tiny flies that swarm over drinks left outside in the summer. The New York Declaration on #Animal #Consciousness, released Friday, was signed by 39 cognition scholars at universities from Canada to Australia. It says there is “at least a realistic possibility” that all vertebrates and many invertebrates have conscious experience. The declaration rests on recent scientific studies that show garter snakes can recognize their own scent, crows can report what they see, octopi can avoid pain and fruit flies can sleep — and they sleep best when they're with other fruit flies. Also on this episode are discussions about fears, and how much work has been recently dumped onto Letter Carriers. #Television shows mentioned include #Fallout, #Crusade, #Robocop and #Star Trek Discovery. Leah and Shawn's dad started planting in the greenhouse. They sat and shared their seeds. This week's podcast promo: Cosmic Pizza

The last ten years have witnessed rapid advances in the science of animal cognition and behavior. Striking results have hinted at surprisingly rich inner lives in a wide range of animals, driving renewed debate about animal consciousness. To highlight these advances, the NYU Mind, Ethics and Policy Program and NYU Wild Animal Welfare Program co-hosted a conference on the emerging science of animal consciousness on Friday April 19 at New York University. This conference also served as the launch event for The New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness. Two separate streams of experience? - Theories of consciousness that are untestable or fail to make predictions - Panpsychism, illusionism - "The Darwinian bottleneck" - "Philosophers very rarely ask the question 'where does the mind come from?'" - "In order to understand how it works we'll need to understand why it evolved" - "We can only understand what consciousness is by understanding how it evolved" - Evolution & development processes - Epiphenomena - Marian Dawkins - "This attitude that anything goes in the literature... it doesn't seem like we're making any progress... we're just creating new outlandish views without having any means of trying to filter them out... like panpsychism" - JW: "It's very common for people to say 'we know nothing about consciousness' which I find a bizarre statement" - "We've made so much scientific progress" - "There are some mental properties that are unique to humans but it's very unclear those are the ones that matter for moral purposes" 20:31 The Origins of Sentience & Consciousness - "It is adaptationist... very complex phenomena don't just appear out of nowhere... They almost always have a functional role. They're not just spandrels..." - "Consciousness is just far to complex and evolutionarily fine tuned for that to happen" - "In our own experience we can see how well it helps us... even if it sometimes can misfire" - The mistaken view that consciousness must be sharp-edged & binary, on or off - "If you can't explain how it can gradually come into existence you must believe that it has always been there" #panpsychism - Wanting to apply crisp well bounded concepts (baldness, life, health, consciousness) to a messy reality ...and much more. Most people who share their home with one or more companion animals take it for granted that their companions have feelings including emotions of happiness and wellbeing. Although the behaviors they observe support their presumption, there are those in the scientific establishment who continue to disparage the belief that other animals have emotions or even consciousness, claiming it is “unscientific,” “sentimental,” and “anthropomorphic” to ascribe emotions to a Hen or a Hamster or a Horse. Tune in for more on today's topic.

Do animals dream? If you're a pet owner, it may seem obvious that your furry friends dream. Most of us have seen dogs running in their sleep or cats meowing during a nap. But this is an academic podcast and really proving that animals dream isn't so simple. In his new book, When Animals Dream: The Hidden World of Animal Consciousness, philosopher David M. Pena-Guzman of San Francisco State University argues the science shows that animals really do dream, and that those dreams are evidence of consciousness.

From snoozing puppies kicking their legs to controversial octopi who change colors while asleep, nonhuman dreaming fascinates us. Science says that sleeping animals experience “reality simulations,” rich dreamscapes which they navigate as conscious agents. Inspired by David's book When Animals Dream (fresh off the press!), this episode kicks off a 3-part series tracing his thrilling investigation into the nature and philosophical implications of animal dreaming. Ep. 52 introduces David's argument that animals' capacity to dream reveals the need to radically rethink animals as conscious beings with complex inner lives.Works Discussed:David Peña-Guzmán, When Animals DreamNature (S38 E1), PBS TVElizabeth Preston, "Was Heidi the Octopus Really Dreaming?"William Lauder Lindsay, Mind in the Lower Animals in Health and DiseaseSigmund Freud, The Interpretation of DreamsEvan Thompson, Waking, Dreaming, BeingMaurice Merleau-Ponty, Phenomenology of PerceptionCharles Darwin, The Descent of ManPeter Godfrey-Smith, Other MindsRatatouille (2007)Website | overthinkpodcast.comInstagram, Twitter & TikTok | @overthink_podEmail | Dearoverthink@gmail.comYouTube | Overthink podcast
