Comedian, performer, and writer Robin Ince has been asking questions about the world around him for as long as he can remember. Perhaps most famous for his radio show The Infinite Monkey Cage which he co-hosts on BBC Radio 4 with Professor Brian Cox, Ince has been bringing science to the masses in new and hilarious ways since the 90s. In this interview with our sister publication, Research Features, we discover what it's like performing 'science' at Glastonbury, why people may be frightened of science, and neurodivergence in STEM.

Why is Fight-or-Flight still a thing? Our brain’s unhelpful primitive reactions to modern stresses. As a listener points out, a lot of the stress we experience in modern times, and the subsequent harm this does to our mental health, can be pinned on our brain’s fight-or-flight response, reacting to things unnecessarily. But if we now live in a world where physical threats don’t lurk around every corner, and fighting or flying are rarely any use, why do we still have this reaction at all? Dean and Rachel get into how the brain really evolves, and the time scales it requires, as well as unpicking the way modern lockdown life sets off our brain’s stress systems, in the second episode of Brain Yapping: Battle Damaged. Robin Ince is a Comedian, Writer and Host of the BBC Series The Infinite Monkey Cage alongside Physicist Brian Cox. Robin also has his own Broadcasts within the Cosmic Shambles Network. For more: https://cosmicshambles.com/ “They aren't just scientific facts – They are stories of what it is to be in the universe.” Today, Robin discusses the strange place he has found himself in, being the resident science comedian. He chats about why it's a good thing to be the stupidest person in the room and how, after having met some of quite literally the greatest minds to have ever walked the face of the earth, some of his opinions about people have actually changed. Konner and Robin also talk about the idea of "stupid questions" and how Robin has come to the realisation that although people may perceive certain questions as stupid, when they are motivated by curiosity, they can often be the most profound. Konner and Robin also discuss the idea of telling the story of science. For the longest time science has been looked at and delivered, in a very cold and unappealing way. Now, through shows such as the infinite monkey cage, we are starting to uncover the emotions, the poetry, and the human story of science and scientific endeavour.

Robin Ince is many things. A comedian, an author, a broadcaster and a populariser of scientific ideas. The Guardian once declared him a ‘becardiganed polymath’ which seems about right. He is probably best known as the co-host of the Sony Gold Award winning BBC Radio 4 series The Infinite Monkey Cage with Professor Brian Cox. He also co-hosts the podcast Robin and Josie’s Book Shambles, which gains over 100,000 listeners a month, which is part of The Cosmic Shambles Network, which he also co-created. His most recent book, I’m a Joke and So Are You, was described by Chortle as ‘one of the best books ever written about what it means to be a comedian’. He also wrote the book, The Bad Book Club, and has edited and written short stories for two volumes of Dead Funny: Horror Stories by Comedians, as well as writing and presenting documentaries about the history of self-help, comedians and melancholy, Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds, Richard Feynman, General Relativity and Dr Seuss. On May 11th 2018 the Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman would've turned 100 years old. But Richard Feynman was so much more than just one of the greatest physicists, the greatest scientists, of the 20th century. He was a beautiful writer, a man of boundless curiosity, a bongo player, a clown. Fellow physicist Freeman Dyson once said that Feynman was "Half genius, half buffoon". He would later revise those words, replacing them with "All genius, all buffoon." So we at The Cosmic Shambles Network have put together an audio documentary featuring interviews with fellow physicists and Feynman admirers to mark this occasion. Presented by Robin Ince and featuring interviews with Professor Brian Cox, Dr Helen Czerski, Professor Jon Butterworth, Dr Leonard Mlodinow, Dr Marcus Chown, Chris Addison, Christopher Sykes and more. And featuring music from Grace Petrie, Rachel Fisher, Patrick Cootes and The FGs. The trailer was released on Feynman's 100th birthday. The full documentary will be released very soon.
