POPULARITY
As November approaches, two near opposites clash for the nation's highest office. It's Ven Hess, firebrand populist breaking all the old rules, known as "The Hessian" for his intimidating tactics on the pitcher's mound, versus Democrat Alec Maynard, an African American Admiral with his own flaws but who offers the nation at least some hope of normalcy. Pete Vankov, a political operative known as the "Dark Angel" because of his reputation for winning at all costs, spearheads the Hess campaign. Meanwhile, an estranged colleague, David Gruber, together with The Globe's political reporter, Jane Berglund, devises a plan to thwart Vankov's march towards a dirty and dangerous victory. Who wins? With Guile, veteran political strategist Craig Snyder has written a thriller exposing the dark underbelly of American politics, a novel rich in suspense and intrigue that will have readers turning its pages quickly in rueful anticipation of the next election.
These gentle giants of the ocean have long been a source of fascination for us humans. And while researchers have made huge gains in fostering a greater understanding of these majestic creatures in recent decades, the use of AI may have just cracked open the mother lode of all puzzles: their language. Could this lead to one day the possibility of talking with whales? David Gruber, the founder & president of Project CETI, an interdisciplinary scientific and conservation project aimed at listening to and translating the communication of sperm whales, joins The Excerpt to share this exciting new development.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If aliens landed on Earth tomorrow, how would we talk with them? Well, we already have a kind of creature on this planet we could attempt to talk to first, and in the last few years a team of renowned scientists have been exploring the ocean studying sperm whales to get that conversation going.David Gruber is a professor of biology and environmental science at CUNY and the founder of Project CETI, an interdisciplinary scientific initiative that is using the latest developments in AI to understand, and possibly communicate with, sperm whales. The day when we break the cross-species communication barrier may be here sooner than you think. Just this year CETI managed to decode what could be called a sperm whale “alphabet”.

Episode Summary:On this World Whale Day we devote our episode to the Ocean - one of the most important places on our planet and home to thousand of different plant and animal species. The aquatic ecosystems make up 70.8 percent of the earth's surface and act as a buffer against many critical global issues including pollution and over-harvesting, it is a source of half of the oxygen we breathe. We have the pleasure to meet Markus Reymann, a Director of TBA21–Academy and an advocate for ocean literacy, research and conservation. He expands on his mission and tells us about how creativity and global collaboration with tribalizers in the fields of art and science - such as Olafur Eliasson, David Gruber and the new exhibition with Wu Tsang 'Of Whales' opening this 21st of February - can foster ocean's restoration. The Speaker:Markus Reymann is Director of TBA21–Academy, a non-profit cultural organization he co-founded in 2011 that fosters interdisciplinary dialogue and exchange surrounding the most urgent ecological, social, and economic issues facing our oceans today. Reymann leads the Academy's engagement with artists, activists, scientists, and policy-makers worldwide, resulting in the creation of new commissions, new bodies of knowledge, and new policies advancing the conservation and protection of the oceans. In March 2019, TBA21–Academy launched Ocean Space, a new global port for ocean literacy, research, and advocacy. Located in the restored Church of San Lorenzo in Venice, Italy, Ocean Space is activated by the itinerant Academy and its network of partners, including universities, NGOs, museums, government agencies, and research institutes from around the world.Follow Markus Reymann, TBA21-Academy and Ocean Space journey.Hosts: Farah Piriye & Elizabeth Zhivkova, ZEITGEIST19 FoundationFor sponsorship enquiries, comments, ideas and collaborations, email us at info@zeitgeist19.com Follow us on InstagramHelp us to continue our mission and to develop our podcast: Donate

Animals are communicating -- but what are they saying? And can we talk back? Marine biologist David Gruber introduces Project CETI: a team of scientists, linguists and AI specialists hoping to decode sperm whale language. Using noninvasive robots and a machine-learning algorithm to collect and analyze millions of sperm whale vocalizations known as coda, the team aims to demystify the communication structures and dialects of these majestic creatures -- and possibly even crack the interspecies communication code. (This ambitious plan is a part of the Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change.)

The deep ocean is the least explored environment on Earth, and scientists estimate that many thousands of species are yet to be encountered. Marine researchers depend on tools primarily developed for the military or the oil and gas industry to study and capture undersea organisms. Many of them are extremely fragile, some thousands of years old, and too often they are damaged or destroyed by equipment that is hard, bulky, and hard to control. In this episode of Disruptive, Rob Wood, a roboticist and Core Faculty member at the Wyss Institute, and David Gruber, a marine biologist at Baruch College, discuss a chance encounter that led them to develop soft robotic tools that enable a new, non-invasive approach to interacting with deep ocean life.
On better customer experience through refining process and removing waste, David Gruber, "there's a tremendous focus on how to get cost out of the system. One of those costs are these negative processing, or the irritants that members are actually experiencing- if you have to call customer care six times to get some issue resolved- that is actually waste within the system. That waste is actually translating into higher costs for members. How do you now actually get that cost out of the system? That's through better customer experience and understanding what members are wanting."

Baruch associate biology professor David Gruber was at a National Geographic Explorers meeting showing video of deep sea coral reef research when a fellow Explorer wondered if he had heard of soft robotics and whether that tool could be used in Gruber’s work. “There’s no biologist who’s using squishy robot fingers to go underwater,” Gruber says. He changed that by trying out the technology during a weeklong expedition on reefs deep in the Red Sea using Baruch’s remotely operated submarine. With the soft robotics, one can “work delicately with deep coral reef organisms,” Gruber says. And who knew Baruch has a submarine?

What a terrifically "diverse" show this week as we hear excerpts of debbie's exclusive interview with Joseph Fiennes talking Kevin Reynold's RISEN, a unique telling of the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Christ as seen from the eyes of a non-believer with the approach of a mystery/detective story. A compelling journey for believers and non-believers alike. And we get started with some excerpts of debbie's exclusive interview with RACE director Stephen Hopkins who brings the amazing story of Jesse Owens' journey to the 1936 Olympics to the big screen. Delving into the political and societal machinations both in the United States and in Nazi Germany, Hopkins focuses on Jesse Owens the man and the triumph of friendship and sportsmanship. Joining BEHIND THE LENS live is special guest, Markus Reymann. Currently appearing in the hilarious dark comedy short from Sheri Sussman, One Night in Hollywood (a fave here at BEHIND THE LENS), in addition to his acting, Markus is also Director of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Academy, a unique venture which puts artists with cutting edge scientists and thinkers to communicate the issues of our time. Reymann and TBA have spearheaded some important environmental and oceanic philanthropy with the Alligator Head Foundation and Marine Lab and Mexico's Cabo Pulmo marine protected area and national park and others, all of which is being documented on film. Given the surge and success of documentaries like "Racing Extinction" and "Energizing Our World", among others, we see the importance of melding science and the arts, something that Markus showcases with TBA21 documentary shorts, including one on the discovery of a biofluorescent hawksbill sea turtle, which discovery was made by Markus and marine biologist David Gruber! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
