Laurie Woolever is a food writer in New York, but she's probably best known for two other jobs she's held: an assistant to Mario Batali, and an assistant to and collaborator with Anthony Bourdain. Laurie was working with Bourdain when he took his own life in 2018. After his death, she published Bourdain: The Definitive Oral Biography. Now she's telling her own story in a new memoir called Care and Feeding, in which she details her struggles with addiction, and explores how her desire to emulate her famous bosses fed her destructive behavior. As you'll hear, in a lot of ways, there was only a thin line between what happened to them, and how Laurie's life unfolded. The Sporkful production team includes Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, Kameel Stanley, Jared O'Connell, and Giulia Leo. Do you ever think of what you eat as being political? Back in 2017, celebrity chef Mario Batali sent out an apology letter for the sexual misconduct allegations made against him and infamously included a recipe—for pizza dough cinnamon rolls. Shortly after Batali's recipe, went viral, Popular blogger Geraldine DeRuiter decided to make the recipe and then she wrote about it. Her subsequent essay, which documented each step of her cinnamon roll preparation but also tackled topics like misogyny in the food world, was read millions of times, lauded by industry luminaries such as Martha Stewart, and landed DeRuiter in the middle of an unanticipated media firestorm. Who knew dessert could be so controversial? If You Can't Take the Heat: Tales of Food, Feminism, and Fury is DeRuiter's new essay collection. The James Beard Award–winning blogger behind The Everywhereist addresses an array of topics, from being “hangry” to receiving death threats to meal-planning for the apocalypse. If You Can't Take the Heat aims to connect the broader culture to the culinary. This event may interest those curious about how patriarchy, pop culture, and plated dishes intersect, or who are just seeking some levity. Geraldine DeRuiter is the James Beard Award-winning blogger behind The Everywhereist and the author of All Over the Place: Adventures in Travel, True Love, and Petty Theft. Her writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The New Yorker's Daily Shouts, Marie Claire, and Refinery 29. Abortion legislation facing a Senate test vote would enshrine into federal law the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide. Senate Democrats are moving quickly to try to codify the 50-year-old ruling after a leaked draft of a U.S. Supreme Court opinion suggested the court is poised to overturn the case. Republicans are expected to block the Senate bill with Wednesday's vote, giving Democrats few options to fight the court's eventual ruling. The government is expected to report Wednesday that consumer prices jumped 8.1% last month compared with a year earlier. That would be down from the 8.5% year-over-year surge in March, the highest since 1981.  The House has emphatically approved a fresh $40 billion Ukraine aid package that beefs up President Joe Biden's initial request. The bill moves to the Senate. The risk from wildfires remains high in New Mexico even as many homes have survived so far. Parents across the U.S. are scrambling to find baby formula because of supply disruptions and a massive safety recall by manufacturer Abbott. Ongoing supply problems have intensified since Abbott shuttered its largest U.S. formula plant due to contamination concerns. In Tuesday's sports highlights, the Heat and Suns win big, a rooke throws a no-hitter for the Angels, and the Hurricanes move to within one win of eliminating the Bruins. Correspondent Chuck Freimund reports. Elon Musk said he will reverse Twitter's permanent ban of former President Donald Trump if the Tesla CEO follows through with his plan to buy the social media company. Musk, speaking virtually at a Future of the Car summit hosted by the Financial Times, said Twitter's Trump ban was a “morally bad decision” and “foolish in the extreme.” He said permanent bans of Twitter accounts should be rare and reserved for accounts that are scams or automated bots. Musk earlier gave his support to a new European Union law aimed at protecting social media users from harmful content after he met with the bloc's single market chief. An Indiana sheriff says the Alabama murder suspect and jailer who evaded authorities for more than a week were heavily armed and preparing for a shootout when they were captured. Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said they were carrying four handguns and an AR-15 rifle along with $29,000 in cash. He said convict Casey White showed no remorse over the death of jail official Vicky White, who was found mortally wounded with a gun in her hand. He said they don't believe Casey White shot Vicky White, but a coroner will make the final determination. President Joe Biden is warning voters unhappy with soaring inflation and his stalled domestic agenda against turning power over to “ultra-MAGA” Republicans in the midterm elections. The president is increasingly trying to cast former President Donald Trump and his adherents as a political foil. Speaking at the White House less than six months before the elections, Biden acknowledged that he could “taste” the country's dissatisfaction with Washington, particularly over rising prices. The president sought to channel the anger against the GOP. Republican Sen. Rick Scott, a prime target of Biden's criticism, responded that it's the Democrats' agenda that is "hurting American families and no amount of spin can change that.” Celebrity chef Mario Batali has been cleared of sexual misconduct following a criminal trial in Boston. A woman had accused Batali of forcibly kissing and groping her while taking a selfie at a restaurant in 2017. The career of the 61-year-old former Food Network fixture crumbled amid sexual misconduct allegations from four women in 2017. Just as Americans gear up for summer road trips, the price of oil remains stubbornly high, pushing prices at the gas pump to painful heights. AAA says drivers are paying $4.37 for a gallon of regular gasoline. That's especially hard on people who drive for a living. The high price of oil is the main cause of the biting gasoline prices. This has left drivers in New York fuming. A barrel of the U.S. benchmark crude has been selling for around $100. Oil prices worldwide have been high in recent months, mainly because many buyers are refusing to purchase Russian oil after its invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says history will hold Russia responsible for its invasion. Tesla is recalling about 130,000 vehicles across its U.S. model lineup because the touch screens can overheat and go blank. The recall covers certain Model S sedan and Model X SUVs from 2021 and 2022, as well as Model 3 cars and Model Y SUVs from 2022. Tom Brady will join Fox Sports as a football announcer when his playing career ends. That announcement was made Tuesday by Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch on an investor call. Brady had announced his retirement at the end of last season, but later renounced it and said he was going to play at least another season as the Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback. Atlanta rapper Young Thug co-founded a violent street gang that committed multiple murders, shootings and carjackings over roughly a decade and promoted its activities in songs and on social media, prosecutors allege in a sprawling indictment that charges him, rapper Gunna and 26 others with racketeering. Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced that New York will make $35 million available to help abortion providers boost services and security if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the landmark Roe v. A middle-aged dad infiltrates the brutal world of high-end restaurants… Bill Buford is a writer who specializes in throwing himself into high-pressure environments that he’s not equipped to handle. For his seminal book "Heat," he spent a few months cooking in Mario Batali’s New York restaurant kitchen, a decade before Batali’s #MeToo downfall. For his latest book, "Dirt," Bill moved his family to Lyon, France, so he could learn to cook French cuisine. He saw firsthand the French reverence for rules and learned to follow them. But he also came face-to-face with the “toxic aggression” that permeates high-end kitchens. He tells us about rethinking his role as a journalist, cook, and human being after that experience, and we ask him how much the food world has changed since he covered Mario Batali. Mark Zuckerberg says this time, he really, really means it about improving Facebook's privacy. As Facebook bleeds users--it's estimated it's suffered a net loss of 15-million users since 2017--co-founder Zuckerberg announced today his team is going to devote the next year to overhauling the Facebook platform to improve privacy, encryption and its messaging service. In other words, changing what Facebook has been all about-- Are Zuckerberg's claims to be taken seriously? We will go In Depth. Chef and restaurateur Mario Batali has jumped out of the frying pan of the Me Too movement and into the fire of losing his empire. Several of his employees claimed he had harassed and inappropriately touched them. Today, Batali is officially out of all of his food-related businesses..........But has the restaurant industry really changed for the better? And, we are about to get a visitor from outer space. Nervous?? The number of Illegal immigrants trying to get into the country has spiked since President Trump took office---despite--and maybe because of---his often heated rhetoric. We'll go in depth on why that's happening. A California assemblywoman says her new legislation, that would limit the circumstances under which police officers could use force, might have stopped Stephon Clark from getting killed in Sacramento. We'll check it out. And the Democratic Party is at war with itself over how to handle one controversial Congresswoman and the question of how to support, and criticize, Israel. Classical Acupuncture and Healing… Imagine sitting in Mario Batali’s restaurant and feeling spiritually guided to talk with him, only to be offered a shot in his kitchen. In an interview covering everything from repressed memories to a Buddhist pilgrimage, Holly Burling, Spiritual Intuitive, Acupuncturist and Healer, joins guest host Jessica Brodkin [Episode 11] in the MouthMedia Network studios powered by Sennheiser. In this episode: Burling describes how her spiritual awakening began in her teens, how she knew something was wrong, how she developed eating disorders, thought something inherently bad about her, she began drinking heavily, then after her freshman year of college she met Andre and fell in love, felt deeply connected while afraid of intimacy. At that time she also recalled being sexually abused by a distant family member. People started coming to Burling for help at 19 years old with their issues and asking for guidance, while she’s in her own trauma Discovering she had a powerful force working through her. Knowing a divine force was always around her and supporting her, and a first waking vision happening at 22 How she lost her romantic partner in devastating way and it broke her Hearing a voice of the Divine, embedding a message that no matter how wounded you are you can always heal and transcend that Realizing her spirit is strong, and it took her out of the dark place Becoming a chef, moving from a BBQ place into fine dining, moving to Italy to learn to cook, and being inspired to meet Mario Batali and a remarkable moment when he approached her with a job Working with Batali at the time his kitchen was at the top of its game, which Burling describes as the most misogynistic kitchen she’d ever worked in The way she works with people, intuitive, acupuncture, empowering people in their self-trust, and tapping into their own intuition The pulse, the liver, and becoming a Buddhist Freeing up energy that was used for bad things and then becomes used for life force Being in the Himalayas, and feeling like she had returned home Everything can be healed, and anyone can have an amazing and fulfilling life even if they have experienced a lot of pain and trauma, moving toward healing

On today's HRN Happy Hour, we're feeling bene! Caity and Kat are joined in the studio by Patrick Martins (as always) and our special guest, Mario LaPosta, Chef of Babbo Pizzeria in Boston. This is the final week of our winter season, so we recap the highlights of all the shows' season finales, plus a very special episode of The Front Burner in which Jimmy & Andrew interviewed Jeremiah Tower, Anthony Bourdain, and Lydia Tenaglia about the new documentary, The Last Magnificent. We share our favorite news stories of the week, and of course we have to talk to Mike Edison on this 4/20 holiday! Finally, we chat more with Mario about what's new in the Batali empire and ask for his food and travel tips when visiting Naples and Rome. Mario LaPosta’s lifelong obsession with pizza started when he was a child watching the pizzaioli in his father’s hometown just north of Naples. LaPosta began working in local pizzerias when he was fifteen years old. During his time studying hospitality at Central Connecticut State University, LaPosta worked in the kitchen at Bricco in West Hartford, one of Connecticut’s most celebrated Italian restaurants. After graduation, he moved to Italy to apprentice in Rome. From there, he moved south to the town of Piedimonte where he earned his chops at a Neapolitan-style pizzeria called Pietra di Luna. After reading that Mario Batali was planning to open a restaurant in Westchester, New York, LaPosta contacted Batali veteran Andy Nusser. Nusser tapped LaPosta to build the pizza program at Tarry Lodge in Port Chester. Soon after it opened in 2008, Tarry Lodge was named among the best pizzerias in the country by GQ’s Alan Richman. In 2011, LaPosta opened the second location of Tarry Lodge in Westport as Chef de Cuisine. LaPosta has competed in the World Pizza Championships in Italy finishing 10th place overall in Pizza Napoletana. He comes to Boston with fifteen years of pizza making experience, both in Italy and New England. His dedication for authentic, simple, and soulful food comes from his mother— who is an exceptional cook— and her homemade pizza.

So how exactly does that turn into a plea for the use of women s breast milk in cooking Ray is as enthusiastic about the culinary delights of breast milk as Chef Kevin, and Margo is not exactly opposed to the concept. If you ve wondered when you re ever going to hear a serious discussion about recipes for human breast milk, from milkshakes to cheese, complete with a healthy dose of hilarity, you re in luck. Chef Kevin s serious about solid food too, specifically sandwiches. Describing Wayfare as a "dynamic sandwich brasserie," the Batali trained pasta chef describes how he set himself a specific goal on moving from New York to New Orleans "to put fine dining in a sandwich." The skill and imagination that goes into Chef Kevin s sandwiches from 35 different home made mayonnaise varieties to the sandwich names are an ode to the universal staple as lyrical and loving as Mike Coustay s fondness for Scarlett Johansson. Mike aka Mikey is Chef Kevin s 1 guest. Although his appearance with Chef Kevin was a surprise, we d met Mikey off the air when we first started Midnight Menu 1. He was also starting up a food podcast. Since then Mikey has gone on to become less of a podcaster and more of a Tweeter nolachef504 as well as having the distinction, he claims, of being banned first from Whole Foods and now from all 38 of Rouse s supermarkets. We started Midnight Menu 1 because we believe people in the world of New Orleans food have so much more going on than recipes and as people are as fascinating as our musicians and other creative artists. If we ever wanted proof we were right, this show is it This is one of our most entertaining, informative, revealing, fascinating, surprising to say the least and fun Midnight Menu 1 s. From the secret to cooking perfect pasta to the marginally weird visionary recipes for breast milk, this is New Orleans culinary conversation at its finest.

This week on The Main Course, host Patrick Martins welcomes Chef Josh Laurano to the program. Having completed his first three months as Executive Chef at Lupa in New York City (starting there years ago as a line cook), Josh checks in with Patrick and shares his notable past experiences at Batali & Bastianich restaurants such as: Del Posto, Babbo, and Terry Market in Port Chester. The two also discuss Josh's personal background and how it inspired him to gravitate to the kitchen, starting with the woman known as the knish queen of West Virginia: Josh's mom. She owned and operated a local organic bakery while his dad had a vegetarian restaurant in New Jersey. Josh also addresses the grass-fed beef movement with his thoughts and even offers some tips when cooking with the leaner cuts of meat. Navigating Josh's impressive career with the B&B Hospitality Group, Patrick gets the details of the inner workings of these successful kitchens. This program was brought to you by Rolling Press. “I try and eat, when I can, the meats that you guys stand behind; locally, organically, delicious meat. Fundamentally, as a chef and a consumer it really comes down to the taste of the product.” [5:44] “You have a couple of options as a young cook starting out. You can work and then party and not do anything in between, or can work and read and you can figure out, “alright I overcooked this, why did I do it.”… So, maybe that helped propel me faster.” [9:13] “You can't just say I cook food and I'm a chef. We are responsible for the entire dining experience.” [13:46] –Josh Laurano on The Main Course

Ep. 82 - Restauranteur, Masterchef Co-Host, Italian wine expert, and marathon runner are all things this week's guest are known for.  But did you know that Joe Bastianich also has his own band, The Ramps.  We talk to him about that (spoiler: they're huge in Italy) as well as his music experiences growing up in Queens- whether it be listening to his family play polka music in the living room, or sneaking off to the pier by the west side highway in NYC to see The Smiths, The Clash, and Miles Davis.  We also talk about how revolutionary the music was at the beginning of Babbo w/ Mario Batali, Tom Colicchio's guitar playing, Gordon Ramsay's obsession with Abba, and at the very end Graham Eliott returns to the podcast- for the sole purpose of being ridiculed by Joe.

We would cook the recipes and take notes, and then we would go on the computer and write up the recipes.” [6:20] — Leo Batali on The Main Course “One of the ways to make sure that kids will be open to eating everything is having them come into the kitchen with you.” [14:45] — Mario Batali on The Main Course
