David is a proud Chicano working in the ambient and experimental side of music. His music has been described as cinematic, patient, moving, and emotional. His intention is to tell short stories through his compositions. Fascinated by science, love, and the nature of birds, many of his albums focus on time, distance, and the struggle to stay alive. In this episode, Al interviews author, podcaster, and retired US Air Force Master Sergeant, David Soto Jr. (recorded 2-21-19). After retiring from the US Air Force, David spent close to three years traveling and living in a van. The excitement quickly unraveled and, having a great deal of time alone, David did a significant amount of introspection. He came to realize that he needed help. He finally realized that he had experienced a fair amount of anger throughout his life, he had long assumed he had ADD, and he eventually realized that he had pulled himself out of what seemed to have been depression on several occasions. David sought out support from the Veterans Association and believed that most of his troubles were past him. However, after many years apart from a woman he could not forget, David reunited with her recently. They quickly conceived a child and became engaged. While David believed he was now living the life he had dreamed of, he fell into the deepest depression he had ever experienced; one that included suicidal thoughts that he could not escape! David Soto Jr. is a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant who didn't realize until reaching his forties that he was a writer. As a child, he struggled with learning disabilities, which yielded him grades that barely earned him his high school diploma. With marks like that, the thought of being an author never occurred to him and college was out of the question. He joined the military and retired 23 years later. The same week David took off the uniform for the last time, never to put it back on, he hit the road traveling the U.S. in his van. David has penned several fitness and nutrition articles and books, but after listening to On Writing by Stephen King, he decided to give writing fiction a try. Todos los que decidimos movernos en bicicleta por la ciudad en el transcurso del viaje comenzamos a percibir el poco espacio que tenemos para acomodarnos junto a los demás medios de transporte. Habiamos escuchado mucho de David Soto y estabamos ansiosos de conocerle en persona. Sus estudios de maestría en Ingeniería de Transportación en Portland lo habían llevado lejos de la isla, lo que atrasó el encuentro.Como todo joven comenzó a moverse en bicicleta en su pueblo cerca de la Playa de Cerro Gordo, sin embargo, su uso de la bicicleta como medio de transporte se materializó más tarde cuando llegó al Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez donde formó parte de Ride a Bike siendo presidente por dos años corridos. Ride a Bike es la organización que se dedica a crear una cultura de ciclismo en el Recinto.Escucharlo fue recibir un boost de energía para los que nos apasiona la idea de tener un país diferente. Me inspiré al notar como ve la vida desde las tantas oportunidades que tenemos de cambiar nuestro entorno. Al transitar por las principales carreteras de Puerto Rico podemos notar que el tema de la movilidad sustentable no estuvo en el panorama de quienes las desarrollaron. Por tanto, conocer un estudiante de ingeniería interesado el tema es fascinante. Una oportunidad de presentar un proyecto innovador le abrió las puertas a David para transformar su campus en uno bici amigable y así atender el problema de congestión vehicular. La planificación estratégica del Plan Maestro de Bicicletas UPRM está tan bien pensada que cada detalle tiene una acción necesaria para el logro de los objetivos. El atractivo del proyecto es la capacidad de involucrar estudiantes de diferentes departamentos para poder utilizarlo como una plataforma de investigación.El Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez logró convertirse en el primer campus con carril exclusivo para bicicletas en Puerto Rico. Este proyecto actualmente involucra a la facultad, empleados, estudiantes y familiares, además de vecinos de la Universidad. La clave según nos relató; es hacer a los participantes dueños del proceso, del diseño y de la planificación. Sin depender de factores externos,  realizan el mantenimiento de las Bici-Flechas sintiéndose motivados por arreglar sus alrededores y como resultado de esta acción los ciclistas que transitan por el área logran sentirse más seguros.Entre los muchos planes de David esta el desarrollar un mapa con las rutas más transitadas por ciclistas, ayudar a las comunidades que deseen adoptar el concepto de pintar Bici Flechas o diseñar rutas ciclistas en su comunidad. But some of the most valuable advice Davis shares is about building his brand and the role of consistency: Be consistent in what you post. Be consistent in when you post. Be consistent in how you engage with your audience.
