Seattle's Dead Bars, in the words of Razorcake, “make something impossible to duplicate look so simple and attainable.” For over a decade, the band—founded and led by John Maiello—has been delivering life-affirming hard rock, drawing comparisons to acts like Japandroids, White Reaper, and Fucked Up. Throughout this time, they've earned national acclaim while remaining a beloved institution. They're the band most likely to be seen sweating it out on stage any given night, delivering "emotional singalong anthems—perfect for screaming along after you've had a beer, or five," as Kerrang! puts it.Their third LP, All Dead Bars Go to Heaven, reaffirms that there is “arguably no better Seattle band,” according to The Seattle Times. With ten hook-laden heavy hitters—from the rousing opener “I Wanna Be a Ghost” to the anthemic closer “Be Me”—the album marks a new chapter: an introduction for the next generation ready to escape the grind, and a reminder to the previous one of their enduring power. The theme is heaven: a place of eternal reward for a life lived virtuously, regardless of the love or loss that once defined it. When the band cries “Dead Bars Forever,” they mean it. This second part of the monthly new release series probably should have been titled after the final song of the show. Former Blackhearts guitarist Ricky Byrd’s “RnR’s Demise (Has Been Greatly Exaggerated)” certainly matches the philosophy of The Ledge, and the fact that month after month we provide over four hours of newly issued tunes is certainly proof. Again, we have a number of “friends of the show”, including White Rose Motor Oil, New Brutarians, Geoff Palmer, and a whole set of tracks from Rum Bar Records. There’s also the return of The Memories, The Minus 5, and Throwing Muses, along with new bands (at least to us) such as The Roxies, Midlife Crisis, Dead Bars, and Creem Circus (love the name, btw).  Also, just a note that due to an upcoming medical procedure there will be now show next week (and possibly the following week).  For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

Since it’s the last episode of March, it is definitely time for first quarter recap. Over two hours of tracks from the best albums released over the last three months. There’s plenty of power pop, garage rock, psych, post-punk, punk, and even some straight ahead rock and roll. There are the usual veterans such as Bob Mould, Guided By Voices, Throwing Muses, and The Men, but there are plenty of newer bands such as Dropkick, Private Lives, Transistors, and Dead Bars. (Yes, there is also an inadvertent 2024 record included. My apologies for the mistake.)  For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

This week, Tristan & Hunter Martinez of the band Decent Criminal are our guests. They recently announced a new EP, which is set to come out in early March of this year via Sell The Heart Records (US) and Gunner Records (EU). The EP is a testament to the band's willingness to evolve their sound and incorporate new approaches to songwriting. That being said, it still retains many of the same qualities that fans have come to love about the band. Decent Criminal got together a little over 10 years ago, and have seen a steady growth in their fanbase along the way. With a a few lineup changes over the years, the band now consists of brothers Hunter and Tristan on drums & guitar/vocals respectively, along with Brian Gellman on guitar/vocals, and Jesse Hernandez on bass/vocals. 2020 was going to be a HUGE year for the band, with appearances at Punk Rock Bowling & Pouzza Fest, along with tours with the likes of Dead Bars, Ariel Salad, and more. They managed to weather the year away from touring by continuing to write new music and it's likely that we'll see another full length from them before too long, but this new EP will be a great dose of new tuneage from them in the meantime. During this episode we talk a bit about the new EP and some of the tactics they've been using over the years with their songwriting. We learn about how COVID-19 has directly impacted them, and we of course go over some of their favorite bands to look out for and their Top 5 Desert Island albums. Gather ‘round the Yule Log, it’s time for some chilling tales of haunted horrors! Ghost Stories Volume III has arrived under the Bobcast tree, just in time for Xmas. Ivy Boyd of the Creepin’ It Real podcast and Ghoul’s Trip blog starts things off with some creepy Christmas ghost stories. Maria of Hollywood Exhumed tells a tale of a departed Uncle who likes to stop by unannounced, even after his passing. Darrin Pfieffer (formerly) of Goldfinger and (currently of) The Dangerous Darrin Show describes what a former girlfriend experienced at a haunted music venue in Buffalo, NY - which was also one of Al Capone’s former “haunts”. Ceasar stays one unforgettable night in the famously phantasmal Jerome Grand Hotel. CJ Frederick of Dead Bars fame tells a chillingly familiar story from the wilds of Jeresey City. And maybe CJ needs a visit from the Ghost Of Xmas Future, ya know, to straighten him out a little. Finally, Amanda of the Pretty F’n Spooky blog and YouTube channel, along with Cherise Williams, talk about their experiences with a VERY haunted doll named Betty. Yikes. The songs of the episode tie everything together, very fitting and very awesome - Parasites, Tsunami Bomb, Night Birds and Pulley help summon the spirits for this one, wherever they’re at. Brought to you by the fine folks of Discount Cemetery. Turn up the Christmas lights for this one, festive frights await!
