This week we're discussing Lower, the latest album by Benjamin Booker. After an 8 year hiatus, Booker is back with an album completely unlike his previous outings and one that's incredibly hard to narrow down to a single genre. However, it offers an excitingly diverse, emotionally resonant, and brilliantly produced (thanks to the collaboration of Kenny Segal) set of songs. Benjamin Booker has been relatively quiet since releasing his 2017 album Witness. He released a song called “Black Disco” in 2020 and has collaborated with Armand Hammer as well as Billy Woods & Kenny Segal back in 2023. Almost eight years since his last project, during that down time he has been working towards his new album Lower, this week's WNXP Record of the Week.
Benjamin Booker entered a new sonic world when he tapped LA-based, “producer’s producer” Kenny Segal to work on LOWER, his first new album in seven years. Booker has always eluded categorization; his rootsy, punky, R&B tones all coming together to make something signature. By enlisting Segal, he’s added extra crispy hip-hop beats and a surreal dreaminess that you’ll hear all over Today’s Top Tune: “NEW WORLD.”

It's been nearly eight years since today's guest Benjamin Booker released his critically acclaimed second album, Witness, but now he's back with a vengeance with his powerful new album Lower, in stores now, which he made in collaboration with producer Kenny Segal. Booker explains his long road to this highly personal collection of songs. And this past week marked the definitive "last waltz" for The Band with the passing of the last man standing, Garth Hudson. Long Ryders singer/guitarist Sid Griffin, author of Million Dollar Bash: Bob Dylan, The Band, and the Basement Tapes, is here to try and convey the monumental impact that Garth and The Band had on American music and around the world, particularly in light of our present Post-Chalamet Dylan Renaissance, And a reminder, you can still help Musicares help the people who bring you the music by donating at Musicares.org/firerelief and if you're a music business professional in need, you may be eligible for assistance by emailing musicaresrelief@musicares.org The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. As soon as you press play on Genuine Dexterity, the new album by k-the-i??? and Kenny Segal, released on Backwoodz Studioz, you immediately hear why this album was indeed called what it was called. k-the-i???'s raw technical skill was put on full display, as he delivered crazy rhyme schemes, intricate flows, and strong moments of personal reflection. On the production side of the coin, Kenny Segal crafted an immensely impressive soundscape that features his trademark hard drums, bass, alongside splashes of dissonant noise, and other experimental weirdness. Through today's conversation with our guests, k-the-i?? and Kenny Segal though, you come to learn that this album title of Genuine Dexterity extends to the album's creation as well. In this episode, we learn more about the immediate connection and effortlessly natural creative process of Genuine Dexterity, what prompted k-the-i??? to return to the rap scene with his first full-length rap album in a long while, the key influences that guided the album's direction, and much more. New York City-based underground hip-hop artist Billy Woods might be best known as half of duo Armand Hammer, but is also well known as a solo artist. His 2024 releaseMaps, in which he worked with beatmaker and producer Kenny Segal, earned a “Best New Music” designation from Pitchfork. On this episode, in which Woods was interviewed before a live audience by guest host and former guest of the show Claire Rousay at the 2024 Big Ears Festival, he talks about how songs by Public Enemy, MF Doom, and Juggaknotts paved his way artistically.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). The Interview (1:49). To me, one of the things that impresses me the most about music is its ability to make me care about life experiences, perspectives, and topics that I either don't know anything about, or have no relation to my current day-to-day life. Today's guest, rapper-producer Pink Navel from Massachusetts, is a prime example of being so good at what they do, that they make me care about something I normally could care less about. This thing in question being video games, because on Pink Navel's latest album fully produced by Kenny Segal, How to Capture Playful, the whimsical passion, lyrical and musical brilliance all combine to create one of the strongest albums of 2023 with video games as its core foundational subject. In this episode, Pink Navel dives into their expressive style of rap, Ruby Yacht, and the makings of their terrific brand-new album. Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). The Interview (2:06). In 2022, roughly 49K songs were uploaded to Spotify each and every day. Therefore, amidst a flurry of music releasing to listeners on a daily, being able to command the attention of a listener in this day and age is tough. The way today's guest, Kenny Segal, acquires this attention is through creating music that simply cannot be found anywhere else. Kenny's one-of-one style has enchanted listeners for over a decade, creating soundscapes for some of rap's most interesting voices in R.A.P. Ferreira, Self-Jupiter, Serengeti, and most recently, billy woods. The LA-based producer joined the show to provide insight into his eclectic production style, his collaboration style, key learnings he's gathered from his illustrious career, and the creation of his latest masterpiece with billy woods, Maps. Kenny's musical journey to becoming a producer (4:50). Kenny's production process (12:26). The elements of music Kenny is primarily focused on (16:32). The role of improvisation in Kenny's workflow - RMPP patron q from André (26:12). Traits Kenny is looking for a rapper to collaborate with (29:07). How Kenny's past work taught him important lessons, and helped him grow as an artist (34:20). Instrumental records vs. collaborative records (42:48). I've been interested in this genre of “abstract hip hop” for a while now. The classification has existed for many years, usually referring to rappers and artists who make perhaps more esoteric music than mainstream hip-hop artists. Kenny Segal has been a consistent presence over the past decade or so, and received several accolades for his production. He's worked with acclaimed rappers such as billy woods, RAP Ferreira, and Serengeti. He's a member of the LA-based group: The Jefferson Park Boys. His latest project, MAPS with New York Rapper billy woods was rated as one of Pitchfork's best new albums, put on The Loved List by Anthony Fantano at The Needle Drop—a critic who I follow almost religiously—and aggregated to universal acclaim on MetaCritic. Kenny's production, like most of my favorite musicians, escapes easy description. He has an affinity for jazzy melodies and acoustic drum-based rhythms, but even those change drastically from album to album. It's almost as if he's entirely changing his palette from one album to the next and reinventing himself with each project. Welcome back to Trve. Cvlt. Pop! a bloody lovely 'ol music podcast. This week on the show Steve is delighted to be reunited with an old school podcast legend in the shape of his former Metal Hammer Podcast co-host Merlin Alderslade. The pair are getting down with the sickness, having just one of those days, waking up and putting on a little make up, moving one step closer to the edge and... er... going me loco...? nah, fucked it. Basically we're counting down some of our favourite one hit wonders from the nu-metal era. Expect silly lyrics, silly facial hair, seven string guitars and some names you had long forgotten.I addition we talk about the new live EP from Denzel Curry and the latest collab album between Billy Woods and Kenny Segal. Plus there is an amazing (for Steve) revelation about how to pronounce the singer from Nickelback's name... if that won't make you tune in...! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Return guest Kenny Segal, one of the most influential and prolific producers in underground hip-hop, joins Dave and Nate to break down his marvelous new album Maps, a collaboration with the best rapper in the world billy woods. Maps is the follow up to 2019's Hiding Places, an album we hold in the highest esteem, so it was great to be able to talk to Kenny about the differences between the two projects. He also enlightens us on the stories behind some of theguest appearances on Maps, including a Danny Brown verse that must be heard to be believed. Big thanks are due as always to the team at Stony Island Audio, the home for hip-hop storytelling.

Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). The Interview (3:14). "I'ma keep it real with you, it's the things you can't undo/The past, the black Rubik's cube" "Payback always inexact but I be squinting over measuring spoons" For most artists, lyrics like this would universally be regarded as their all-time best moments. But for artists like billy woods though… lyrics like this are a dime a dozen… they're literally just Verse 2 off of a song called "Hangman". The praise being thrown the way of NY-based rapper, label head of Backwoodz Studioz, and 1/2 of Armand Hammer… are plentiful, and growing in their fervor. After a string of releases that involved high-profile names such as Moor Mother and The Alchemist in late 2020 / early 2021, billy woods rode this surging wave of acclaim surrounding his music, and delivered two legacy-defining works back to back in 2022. This put the finishing touches on what is, in my humble opinion, the greatest 5-year run in hip-hop history. From 2018 onward, we got Paraffin, Hiding Places, Terror Management, Shrines, BRASS, Haram, Aethiopes, WHT LBL, and finally, Church. And if that wasn't enough, his Backwoodz Studioz camp has added to the flurry of incredible forward-thinking art during this time period, through the emergence of E L U C I D, ShrapKnel, AKAI SOLO, SKECH185, and more. Yet here we are, in May of 2023… and billy woods has done it again. Teaming up with Kenny Segal for a second time, woods has released his latest masterpiece, Maps... and he's here today on the show, to talk about his experience creating this record, his writing style and the frequent themes found in his work, Armand Hammer, the legacy of Backwoodz, and so much more! If you're familiar with me and this show so far, you know how I feel about woods. You know I had to make the most of my opportunity speaking with the GOAT. You won't wanna miss this... Staying grounded amidst growing acclaim (4:52). The concept of ‘survivor's guilt' as it relates to woods' career and life in general (9:41). The legacy of Backwoodz Studioz (16:18). Working with E L U C I D as Armand Hammer (19:50). New Armand Hammer album later in 2023 (24:49). woods' writing process and a breakdown of “No Hard Feelings” (25:46). The key ideas underpinning the creation of Aethiopes (33:10). Love and relationships in woods' music (47:44). woods' mind state creating Maps (53:13). How Maps differs from Hiding Places (59:34). Working with Kenny Segal (1:01:48). Breakdown of the ending to Maps, and how fatherhood has impacted woods' music (1:19:42). Upcoming work to expect from woods and Backwoodz Studioz (1:30:07). In this episode we speak to Wordsound Recordings CEO Skiz Fernando and Self Jupiter of Freestyle Fellowship, and we share some essential listening recommendations. Skiz “Spectre” Fernando, AKA The Ill Saint, guides us through some rarely-told history, illuminating the vital connection between Jamaica and NYC, encompassing the dub reggae and early hip hop that would inform his unique approach to beat production and the dark, dusted aesthetics of his label, Wordsound Recordings. We go over the label’s roster including Prince Paul, MC Paul Barman, Sensational, Scotty Hard and Hawd Gankstuh Rappuhs MC’s Wid Ghatz. We also talk about Bill Laswell and the Jungle Brothers’ fated project Crazy Wisdom Masters. Finally, we discuss Skiz’s long-term relationship with Wu-Tang Clan and his forthcoming book, From The Streets of Shaolin: The Wu-Tang Saga. This month’s Patreon bonus episode features additional time with Skiz, as he details his early influences, explains how he became a writer for The Source, and shares some arcane knowledge! After that, it’s an exclusive hour-long Sensational mix by Supreme Low who dubs out a selection of some of the greatest, most fucked-up works (including some rare and unreleased tracks) by the self-proclaimed “freak styler”. Get this and all the past bonus episodes (including Anti-Pop Consortium, New Kingdom, Cambatta, Brzowski, and Tokyo Cigar) for just $3 via patreon.com/weirdrap. Guest correspondent Beverly Fre$h returns to break down Self Jupiter’s verbal and lyrical approach, from his work on Freestyle Fellowship’s Innercity Griots album through his latest releases with Kenny Segal, discussing the subconscious, finding hidden rhythms, leaving room for interpretation, and artworks as living entities. Jupiter also takes us back to the very first night of the infamous Good Life open mic, followed by the formation of Freestyle Fellowship, up through the subsequent years of Project Blowed, sharing how he regarded the growing underground hip hop scene of the late 90s which he and his peers had helped to birth. We recommend some new releases by Tracy Jones and Bilal Salaam, and an older one that deserves more attention: FLANCH. And we recommend a podcast, Rhythms Per Minute (hosted by Bloodmoney Perez), particularly an episode illuminating the brilliance of Bigg Jus. Weekly Weird Rap Discussion Gang at youtube.com/weirdrap. Kenny Segal Talks Moving to LA for School (But Really The Weed), Staying Relevant For 20 Years, And P.E.A.C.E. Being The Guy On The CouchKenny Segal has a long and colorful history with Los Angeles rap. He's been a part of the underground scene in one way or another for 20 years now, dabbling in everything from Drum n' Bass, Turntablism, Blowdian rap production, to the current beat scene. He's had a rebirth of sorts in the last few years working with artists like Milo and Busdriver, his project The Kleenrz with Self-Jupiter, and becoming a part of Team Supreme. This episode paints a broad stroke of Los Angeles music scenes from the late 90's to today. Hear us talk about moving to LA for school (but really for the weed), keeping his sound relevant after 20 years of work, and P.E.A.C.E. being the guy on his dorm couch throughout college. –Lee See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Busdriver is a rapper from Los Angeles, and since 2001, he's been releasing albums with a signature hyperliterate, intellectual style. But over a decade later, Busdriver has found himself reaching for something more intimate and personal. In this episode, he breaks down the 2015 song "Worlds to Run," along with the track's producer, Kenny Segal. It features guest vocals from Anderson Paak and Milo, and you'll hear how their contributions shaped Busdriver's vision for the song.
