Some have claimed that Freud thought the Irish were impervious to therapy. While we may never know if he actually said that — we know for goddamn sure that John Haggerty is impervious to any of Scott's lines of questioning. But that's okay. Like all great heroes, John's stoicism belies a heart of gold beating with generosity, fairness, and a firm belief in the human collective. Did we mention that he's also a hell of a guitar player? On this episode we try to get Mr. Haggerty to talk to us about Pegboy, Naked Raygun, the Chicago punk scene, Steve Albini, Stratocasters, Herb Rosen, O'Banion's, disco duds, plumbers, Renaissance faires, and the loneliness of saxophone playing guitarists.

It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a true recording innovator and master of his craft: the amazing Mr. Steve Albini. Our good friend and fellow podcasting brother, Chris L joins us from the awesome Pod Of Thunder podcast. We knew we needed someone who represented the region of the country Steve was from and where he did most of his work; a magical faraway place called Chicagoland. Chris was a musician in the Chicago scene in the 90s when Albini's “production” was soaring, and his recordings were impacting the rock and alternative world hugely. This a tough loss, as Albini's ability to capture the true essence of a real rock n' roll band was second to none.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace, Steve. The sounds of recorded drums will never be the same!Songs this week include:Bodhisattva – “Broken” from Bodhisattva (1993)Big Black – “Bad Penny” from Songs About Fucking (1987)Urge Overkill – “Lineman” from Wichita Lineman (1987)Pegboy – “Never A Question” from Fore (EP) (1993)Shellac – “My Black Ass” from At Action Park (1994)Spy – “Way Inside” from Spy (2005)Foxy Shazam – “Shoe Box” from GONZO (2014)The Mean Reds – “A Little Truth” from CRC Demo (1996)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

Pierre Kezdy was a staple of the Chicago Punk scene for more than 25 years.  Beginning in the early 80's with Strike Anywhere Kezdy made his mark with his distinctive bass playing and melodic songwriting.   His work with Naked Raygun across classic albums from 1986's “All Rise” through 1990's “Rayun…Naked Raygun" would cement his legacy and joining ex-Raygun guitarist John Haggerty for several Pegboy albums further confirmed the high regard that he was held in throughout the Windy City.  We sadly lost Pierre to cancer in 2020.  He was only 58.  To celebrate his life through the music of Naked Raygun a number of Chicago area bands put together this compilation to support his late wife and children with all proceeds going to the family.  You can contribute and help support the Kezdy family by buying it on BandCamp:  https://godspeed-tribute.bandcamp.com/album/godspeed-a-tribute-to-pierre-kezdy-of-naked-raygun.  RIP Pierre.      Recommended Listening   HHPP EP16:  Naked Raygun - Complete Discography  https://huntsmanhill.com/2017/03/12/ep16-naked-raygun-complete-discography/   HHPP Spotify Track:  “Gear” by Swingin' Utters https://open.spotify.com/track/47xKxv09SoqAoIypYhrK28?si=8d06c8af7c114c5f   Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com   huntsmanhill.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRwAcademy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ Mid City Three:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/2LW7wWSHd9bi3n3Q5N8i35?si=aVFU0HdnRzqI1UOTAfc-ig

Naked Raygun is one of the greatest bands to ever “whoa whoa” their way onto a Chicago stage, and their influence continues to loom large on the generations that follow in their footsteps.   With that, a new Raygun tribute compilation is on the way: “Godspeed…  A Tribute to Pierre Kezdy.” Scheduled for release on July 28, the album features NR covers from the likes of Face to Face, and J. Robbins. Also featured on the comp are a “who's who” of former Car Con Carne guests, including Josh Caterer, Pegboy, the Bollweevils, the Methadones, the Brokedowns and Death and Memphis. All proceeds from the project go to the family of Pierre Kezdy, who passed away in 2020.   The guys behind the compilation, Curt Harrison (the Usuals) and Pat Mineau (Grey Trash Aliens), jumped in the car to talk about putting the project together, as well as the impact of Naked Raygun's music.    Oh, and there's food in this episode … wonderful food from the recently-opened Rogue's Corner in Elgin (109 E. Highland). Owner Matt Habib shared a handful of his pizza originals, including Pipe n Wrench (Italian beef, sausage, giardiniera) and Jury Rig (Mac & Cheese + Sloppy Joe). Matt was also comfortable and happy to offer his thoughts on Naked Raygun; he's a fan just like the rest of us.    Naked Raygun will do a rare signing event at Rogue's Corner on August 26 at 1 p.m., where they'll sign “Godspeed” records and merch.   ###   Car Con Carne is proud to be sponsored by Alex Ross Art (alexrossart.com). San Diego Comic Con is fast approaching. If you're going, make sure to visit Alex Ross Art while you're there (Booth 2415)!

Thick Records was formed in 1994 by Detroit native Zak Einstein, who started the label when he relocated to Chicago after graduating from Michigan State University. Early releases include albums from Chicago ska-punkers The Blue Meanies, Alton, IL's Judge Nothing, Seattle's grunge rockers Truly, and the Omaha-based Commander Venus. Blue Meanies singer Billy Spunke joined Einstein and signed multiple Chicago punk rock artists including The Tossers, The Arrivals, and The Methadones. Thick released picture disc vinyl including 7" records from Alkaline Trio, At The Drive-in, ALL, and Citizen Fish. The label also released several compilations documenting Chicago rock and punk music. The compilations included 2000's Magnetic Curses: A Chicago Punk Rock Compilation, which included music from Gaza Strippers, Alkaline Trio, and Pegboy. Oil: Chicago Punk Refined, a 2003 release from the label, included tracks from nineteen Chicago-area punk acts, including Rise Against, The Lawrence Arms, The Tossers, Plain White T's, Bob Nanna, and Local H.  In 2004 Einstein moved the label to Los Angeles. The last label releases came in 2007 with CDs from The Brokedowns and Seven Storey Mountain. Thank you Monika Ebly for the intro to Zak who I got on the Skype and this is what we chat about. Brendan Kelly Rise Against Picture disc vinyl The palette of Blue Meanies CDs The letter the Blue Meanies sent to MCA What did the record label look like on a day to day basis The At the Drive-In / Burning Airlines split Turning an oil production factory into a studio What really killed the music industry What 2008 did to the label And a ton more Check out my new book The Couples' Checklist for my webcomic dailyBred. Denis Buckley and Dan "Mr. Precision" Wleklinski of long-running Chicago punk legends 88 Fingers Louie join me for a trip to "Krampus: A Haunted Christmas," a Christmas-themed haunted house on the site of the 13th Floor haunted house in Melrose Park. It was incredibly well done, and we wish it was year-round. Discussed in this week's show: Mr. Precision rigged up the CX-9 like a recording studio. The tactical decision to go with Chipotle instead of Bakers Square. The awesomeness of the Krampus haunted house. We think the haunted house could be year-round, and we imagine what a St. Patrick's theme could look like. Why did all the ladies of the haunted house fall in love with Mr. Precision? Was it his hair? His hammer? Laugh tracks are added in post. With this episode, Denis makes his fourth appearance on Car Con Carne... but he's not in first place. Sandwich idea: "Thank you for being a vegetarian special." The band's getting ready to head to Costa Rica, something that never happened in the band's first run. Mr. Precision's remixes of 88's old albums: Was he hearing stuff the fans weren't hearing? "Knowing as much as I know.... I've always wanted to get my hands on it." If you like Schlong, you're gonna love 88 Fingers Louie. THE FIRST CAR CON CARNE "REMOTE" IS COMING! Lots of guests planned for 12/22! 88's upcoming gig in the lilac village of Lombard on 12/21, opening for the mighty Pegboy. Denis's audition process to join 88 Fingers Louie: Mr. Precision doesn't remember much. Park Ridge landmarks: The Sandlot wasn't always the Sandlot. Remembering the Fireside Bowl. The mature 88 Fingers is the best 88 Fingers.   Mentioned in this week's show: Traci from Hot Lips Messiah Josh Caterer from Smoking Popes Tyler Wildey of Epic Deli Schlong, the band Turnspit Daryl Wilson from the Bollweevils Take the Reins Julia Shell Car Con Carne is presented by the Autobarn Mazda of Evanston

This week, "punk rock doctor" Daryl Wilson joins me for a beef and sausage combo from one of the greatest places on earth, Johnnie's Beef (7500 W North Ave, Elmwood Park, IL 60707). Daryl's most famously known as the frontman for legendary Chicago punk rock band The Bollweevils. By day, he's the EMS Medical Director at Edward Hospital in Naperville. If you're listening to this before Thanksgiving 2017, go see Bollweevils with Pegboy on 11/22 at 1st Ward/Chop Shop! Here's what we chatted about on this week's Boost Mobile-sponsored extravaganza: Daryl went hot; I went sweet My first contact with Daryl, and the punk rock ethics that kept us separated in the 1990s My sense of relief that Daryl's a doctor, as I committed myself to the not-cardiac-friendly beef combo. The time I was flipped off in Wicker Park, just for working in radio Daryl's med school experience Daryl and I wore kinda-similar outfits to the podcast recording The documentary "Men: The Series," which features Daryl Daryl's strange burping issue The temptation of going for a second round of beef/sausage combos: Do we do it? We surely aren't that irresponsible... right? Daryl's most fond memories of the 90s Chicago's punk scene vs. Metro in the 90s The Bollweevils vs. Metro in the 90s ("Were you guys banned from Metro?" "Technically, yes.") The Fireside Bowl and the horrifying bathrooms there The ongoing influence of Naked Raygun ("they're the shit") What would have happened to the Bollweevils had Daryl not gone to med school? Technically, Daryl could kill any of his bandmates and bring them back to life My gratitude to Daryl's wife for letting him spend the night eating like an asshole with me The topic that causes Daryl to freeze  The great Power Man and Iron Fist comic books of days past
