Risser shares candid conversations with John about the symptoms he faces—fatigue, appetite loss, and pain—yet he emphasizes John's remarkable resilience and his determination to maintain a sense of normalcy, including enjoying meals and engaging in social activities. The narrative underscores the importance of personal agency in the face of illness, showcasing how John continues to assert his will to live fully, even as he confronts the inevitability of his condition.A significant highlight of the episode is the 'golf portion' of the Die Happy Tour, where Bill, Paul, and Vernon join John on the golf course, a longstanding venue of friendship and joy. Risser articulates the promise he made to John to ensure they would always share these moments together, regardless of the circumstances. The recounting of their golfing outings not only illustrates the therapeutic benefits of friendship but also serves as a reminder of the importance of shared experiences in fostering joy during challenging times. Through laughter and camaraderie on the course, Risser captures the essence of life's fleeting moments, making this episode a heartfelt tribute to friendship, resilience, and the enduring human spirit amidst the shadows of terminal illness.Takeaways: In this poignant episode, we discuss John Bjorlie's transition to hospice care as he embarks on the next phase of his Die Happy Tour. On this episode of Tent Show Radio, experience a high voltage hour of countrified rock & roll as Wisconsin bred band Them Coulee Boys play tunes from their album Namesake. Them Coulee Boys craft a brand of Americana that blends folk, punk, bluegrass, and rock & roll. They sing their conversational songs in 4-part harmony, often with a banjo stomp and rhythm section punch that drives the audience onto the dance floor and into community. Their trusty van has propelled them thousands of miles across the country and into the hearts of strangers, who tend to leave each show as family. Soren Staff and Beau Janke, who both grew up amidst a stretch of glacial melt-carved river valleys in the upper Midwest, and more often than not could be found with an instrument in hand, became fast friends and formed their electric music partnership, after having met as counselors at a bible camp in northern Wisconsin in 2011. The duo played their first gigs as the rough-around-the-edges folk/rock/Americana outfit Them Coulee Boys in 2013. The additions of Jens Staff on mandolin, Neil Kraus on guitar & bass, and Stas Hable on drums helped to grow the band into the rollicking outfit it is today. With three full-length albums and an EP behind them, including 2019's Die Happy, they released their fourth studio album Namesake in 2021. The new album feels familial, like old friends with no need for small talk. There are moments of power and punch, balanced with an intimacy only felt between the ones we love. The ten-song collection spans from pure and genuine ballads to a leaping, countrified take on rock and roll. Namesake finds Them Coulee Boys following a new trajectory, combining their signature take on folk-grass and Americana with comfort on electric instruments and playing rock and roll. The record lives and breathes. It's both intimate and bombastic.     EPISODE CREDITSMichael Perry - Host Phillip Anich - Announcer Matt Jugeinhemer - Engineer Gina Nagro - Marketing Support   FOLLOW BIG TOP CHAUTAUQUA https://www.facebook.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.instagram.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.tiktok.com/@bigtopchautauqua https://twitter.com/BigBlueTent FOLLOW HOST MICHAEL PERRYhttps://sneezingcow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sneezingcow https://www.instagram.com/sneezingcow/ https://twitter.com/sneezingcow/ 2024 TENT SHOW RADIO SPONSORSAshland Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.visitashland.com/    Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau - https://www.bayfield.org/  Bayfield County Tourism - https://www.bayfieldcounty.wi.gov/150/Tourism  The Bayfield Inn - https://bayfieldinn.com/  Cable Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.cable4fun.com/  Kylmala Truss - https://www.kylmalatruss.com/ SPECIAL THANKSWisconsin Public Radio - https://www.wpr.org/

About This Episode In this episode, we have Martin O'Toole, Author of How to Die Happy and Podcaster. We explored themes around life “in the Matrix”, depression, consumption, distraction, and “success”.  We went deep down the rabbit hole of pointless pursuance of success in today's society. We also got a little snippet on Martin's new book: How To Die Happy, and how it examines why many of us feel robbed of this much sought-after prize.  About Martin O'Toole Martin is “a man on the mend”, a recovered addict who once lived a very different materially-immersed life before hitting rock bottom. Moments from suicide, his Beagle talked him out of it. His healing journey provided a vast array of insights, from ancient Eastern philosophy, to extensive work with psychedelic medicines.  "If you told me I had five minutes left to live, I'd spend that time basking in gratitude for the incredible gift of life. I want others to have that choice too.” - Martin O'Toole Through his experiences of the “pointless pursuance of success”, Martin uncovered the alchemy of everlasting happiness. Understanding the depths of depression and contrasting heights of delight, his compulsion to share his story resulted in How To Die Happy — his first book. Singing is a big deal for Christians. It's “one of the most repeated commands in Holy Scripture,” according to Jim Thompson, author of Sing Loud, Die Happy: An Exploration of How God's Gift of Song Is Meant to Change Us. “It's right up there with ‘believe' and ‘do not fear.'” It's so important that Martin Luther said, “Next to theology, I give to music the highest place and the greatest honor.” And yet I'm not sure that many of us have given much thought to why singing matters to us as Christians. That's why I'm Thompson wrote this book. Ep 108 - Western culture teaches us to fear death which really handicaps us to never truly live. We avoid death at all costs. We don't want to talk about it or read about it and most do not enjoy attending funerals. In this episode I interviewed a lady by the name of Presence Grace, yes that is her name, she also goes by Blessing. After you listen to this episode you will know why people have given her those names. Presence is a death midwife or death doula, who is a proponent for conscious dying. She takes us back into her journey to become a death doula and shares many real “end of life” stories she has witnessed as she helped people transition. Our conversation I believe is going to be a powerful tool to awaken many who listen to wake up and truly start living. A statement I got from presence was “You can't fully embrace life until you face death.” Think about it. If you had six months to live what would you do? What would you say to those around you? What would you do that you have put off? What is important to you? Thanks again for listening and if you like the show please like, share and subscribe! Love & Light -Coach Tim.
