Tony-nominated actor Grey Henson joins Alan for an engaging conversation about his journey through the world of Broadway comedy. Grey reflects on his rise from a Georgia-born performer with a background in ballet to a Tony-nominated role as Damian Hubbard in Mean Girls: The Musical. He opens up about the challenges of transitioning into comedic roles, including his current portrayal of Buddy the Elf in Elf: The Musical on Broadway. Grey shares the importance of embracing your unique qualities and how his comedic style evolved through his experiences in high school theater, college at Carnegie Mellon, and professional work. Throughout the episode, Grey discusses the impact of comedy on his career and the importance of balancing preparation with spontaneity. He talks about his time in Shucked, a show that required him to be constantly aware of the audience's reactions and how that shaped his performance. The conversation also touches on his thoughts on comedy in general—how it should feel effortless and truthful rather than forced—and how he brings that mentality into every role, from Mean Girls to Elf. Grey also dives into the reality of performing eight shows a week, the pressures of portraying iconic characters, and how the key to a long career in theater is remaining grounded and generous to your scene partners. Grey Henson is a Tony-nominated actor best known for his comedic roles on Broadway. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon's prestigious School of Drama, Grey first made a name for himself as Elder McKinley in the Book of Mormon first national tour before joining the Broadway company. He later earned a Tony Award nomination for his standout performance as Damian Hubbard in Mean Girls: The Musical. Grey has also appeared in Shucked, playing Storyteller Two, and most recently, he's been bringing holiday cheer as Buddy the Elf in Elf: The Musical on Broadway. A musical about “Cats”… a musical about a Founding Father of America… now we have a musical about corn? They'll write a musical about anything. But “Shucked” is not just a musical about corn - it's about tearing down walls, and sharing the love we have for one another in a divided nation. In today's episode, Quinn VanAntwerp (“Shucked”, “Jersey Boys”) talks with Lance and discusses all things “Shucked” - from joining the show in its early creation to the big Broadway premiere, you'll find that the hard work happens behind a closed barnyard door! The musical plays Houston's Hobby Center for the Performing Arts November 19th to the 24th as part of the 2024-2025 Broadway at the Hobby Center series.

A lot has changed since Izzy McCalla first appeared in episode 38 back in 2019 and she's more than happy to share the latest news in her journey – from her early roles to now playing Marlena in "Water for Elephants." She reflects on how each role built her confidence and prepared her for new challenges, her tendency to gravitate towards ensemble pieces, and her ability to go back and forth between the comedic and dramatic genres. Izzy opens up about the challenges of replacing actors in established shows, the pressure of delivering in front of audiences, and the process of finding inner peace and self-acceptance. She shares an important lesson on being funny on stage, and that nothing kills comedy faster than hesitation and anxiety. Currently playing as Marlena in “Water for Elephants,” she talks about the character's complexities, and her evolving perspective on love, relationships, and self-worth. She also discusses her Haitian heritage and its personal connection to her role, sharing her family's history and how they immigrated to Haiti with the Danish circus. Izzy gets real as she opens up about vulnerability, self-discovery, her tendency to fix others, and the importance of setting boundaries while maintaining empathy as she navigates emotional growth. Izzy McCalla first appeared in episode 38 back in 2019 and our special 150th Pride episode in June of 2021. Since then, she has added more credits, including the Paper Mill Playhouse production of “Clue” and “Hercules”, and “Footloose” at the Kennedy Center, and was part of the closing cast of "Shucked" earlier this year. She's currently part of the recently opened production of “Water for Elephants” as Marlena. [REBROADCAST FROM May 18, 2023] Country singer-songwriter Brandy Clark has been nominated in six different Grammy award categories. Clark is a co-writer of the music and lyrics to the hit new Broadway musical, "Shucked." And on Friday, she's releasing a new self-titled solo album, produced by Brandi Carlile. She joins us live in the studio to perform some songs from the album and talk about her work.

As an aspiring artist, Brandy Clark found herself in love with the craft of songwriting, as some of her peers were working on their image and presentation. She became a top songwriter in Nashville, contributing songs to performers like Kacey Musgraves and LeAnn Rimes. Being a lesbian also complicated any desire to be on the public stage in a conservative industry. But she eventually emerged as a solo artist, partly under the tutelage of Brandi Carlile, who acted as producer. Carlile has ushered her toward the sound of Americana—a “dirtier” aesthetic than Nashville's, Clark says, and a more inclusive community, which is sometimes mocked as “country music for Democrats.” Clark met recently with Emily Nussbaum, who recently wrote about the culture war in country music, to discuss her recent album, which has been nominated for no fewer than five Grammy Awards. It originally had the title “Northwest,” reflecting Clark's Washington roots, but she scrapped that to avoid confusion with North West, the child of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, and released the album as “Brandy Clark.” Of her four solo records, “this is the most authentically me.”Clark performed “Buried” and “Pray to Jesus” live in our studio.

The truth is finally really spoken aloud on Las Culturistas this week as Matt & Bowen catch up on culture, discussing interim agreements vs. scabbing during strike era, The Morning Show returning, Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS and the important of the sophomore album, Chappel Roan on the horizon, the fact that Shucked on Broadway is a blast and, unfortunately, the Drew Barrymore of it all. All this, BONGOS, Joe catching Sophie on the ring camera, Married To Medicine and the overuse of "god damn" in pop music. Consider this episode Dishoom. Matt & Bowen may be back in little boxes on a computer, but that doesn't mean they're not injecting you right in the little veins with a culture catch up for the ages. After Matt's two-Eras-Tour weekend and Bowen's one-canceled-Carly Rae-concert-Monday, there is much to discuss, such as Alex Newell in Shucked, Patti LuPone's upcoming shows at Cherry Grove, being in indictment watch for the third time (got him! btw), the Lizzo of it all, psychics, and getting fingered. All this, how GHB is kinda taking over the gay community and TBH it's a little weird, pros and cons of the new RHONY, mass uncoupling and how dating can feel like doom, establishing routines, adjusting to new medication and Grindr sucking in more ways than one. Sign up for Big Money Players's Diamond Subscription for bonus episodes of Las Cultch early! We explain it all in this episode
