In this episode of Agents Influence podcast, host Jason Cass interviews Bill Martin, President and CEO at Plymouth Rock Property Assurance. Bill talks about how he got into the insurance industry and his journey to becoming the CEO. He also discusses the value of understanding the analytics and data in the industry. Episode Highlights: Jason introduces Bill Martin. (3:06) Is Bill an iPhone or an Android user? (3:41) What was the last app that Bill downloaded? (4:56) Does Bill love to win or hate to lose? (6:10) Has Bill listened to Jason’s podcast before? (6:44) What does Bill attribute to his success, skill or luck? (7:02) Bill shares the first big break of his career in insurance. (7:55) Bill shares his background and journey to success. (8:40) Bill mentions that he did a series of three startups. (11:56) Bill says that the main idea is that you should be able to know before you offer somebody insurance is what you need to charge them. (14:43) Bill mentions that there is no great insurance story that isn't a distribution story. If you have great agents, you're going to win. (18:00) Bill explains that he gets to concentrate on making his product more attractive to both the distributors and the customers, and that's where the value is going to be built. (18:46) Would it be safe to say that a lot of CEOs don't think like Bill? (19:25) Bill mentions that there is some brilliance to the delivery of really good ideas that aren’t apparent at first. (21:38) Jason shares that the distribution system has given him a life, he never thought that would be possible. (22:15) Jason thinks that a lot of people lose sight of understanding that it's a passion, a willingness, and a desire to change an industry and have it look perhaps, different. (22:34) Bill shares that there are some great things about the regulation that we aren't embracing enough, but there are also some things that are just getting old. (24:24) What is the game plan that Bill cast as a vision for Plymouth, and how does he see the future? (26:14) Bill mentions that he started the small piece of a company called Neptune Flood Insurance. (26:50) Why has the industry not tried to take over the National Flood Insurance Program? (28:46) Bill explains the two reasons why NFIP started. (28:55) Bill shares that it's not wrong to tell everybody what the secret formula is. Because they'll come in and ease the pressure on you to offer rates that are not affordable if you aggregate. (30:57) In Jason’s opinion, data is the single biggest differentiator in the insurance industry. (32:06) Bill talks about an announcement from someone in Insurtech. (32:59) Bill shares that it’s weird how they’ve used data to improve the insurance company's lot, and they haven't used it to improve the insure policyholders lot. They tend to use it to make their loss ratios better and out segment everybody, but they don't use it to make the customers’ lives easier. (34:13) Bill says that the interest rates can influence companies, but the companies that are influenced are the ones that probably aren't going to survive in the long term. It's the ones that are disciplined through the interest rate environment that will survive. (40:02) Bill mentions that he’s reading the book entitled The British Are Coming: The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777 (The Revolution Trilogy) by Rick Atkinson. (42:31) Bill thinks that CEOs often don't have time to be nuanced. (42:51) Bill thinks that the big factor for a lot of agencies is that they need to be really good technicians and they need to be really good with people. (44:05) Key Quotes: “I'm not trying something that's enough on the edge to really make a difference. So if I don't push the edge and fail, then I guarantee you that I'm not going to have something that succeeds.” - Bill Martin “Anybody can lose money, you just lower rates. Anybody can make money and not grow, you just raise rates... But nobody seems to be able to grow and make money at the same time.” - Bill Martin “I'm going to do the thing that does make sense and we're going to compete with it, and there'll be millions of things that don't work because there are reasons we do things the way we do, and those reasons don't go away just because you tried something new.” -Bill Martin Resources Mentioned: Agency Intelligence We Got Your Podcast Reach out to Jason Cass LinkedIn- Bill Martin Plymouth Rock Property Assurance Advertisers: Lightspeed Voice ePay Policy

Bill Conway (Editor-in-Chief/Co-Founder, The Hard Times) isn't exactly good at follow through. He started his first job at Dunkin Donuts and only held on long enough to buy a new skateboard...and get fired. He tried to become an electrician, but unfortunately becoming an electrician also means getting electrocuted all the time. So, he bailed on that one too in favor of the warehouse life. But one thing he never bailed on was feeding his punk satirist comedy empire, The Hard Times. Nick and Chase also try to lure Bill into what is almost certainly a job getting murdered at a summer camp in western Massachusetts. He also wrote the book on Search Engine Marketing. [15:39] - What are some of Bill’s other favorite search tips and tricks to find out what’s going on with your SEO? [17:47] - Stephan asks Bill a little bit of a trick question about how you tease out the HTTPS URLs. In his answer, Bill talks about canonicals. [21:48] - What do you do when your canonical is not getting obeyed? [23:32] - Stephan talks about what he finds when he audits clients’ websites. He then uses the example of a specific client, and Bill offers his advice for the situation Stephan described. [26:14] - Stephan points out that XML sitemaps are supposed to only have canonical URLs in them. [30:56] - What should listeners pay attention to with regards to HTTP migrations? [34:12] - Bill discusses chains of redirects and what he would recommend that listeners do about them. [37:17] - We learn about the benefits of using a 410 instead of a 404, with Bill describing the intended uses of each. [41:36] - If you want to reduce the amount of wasted crawl equity or crawl budget, would Bill recommend disallows, noindexes, or 410s to carve pages out of the search results? He likes to do a plain noindex nofollow, he explains. [44:35] - Stephan describes a common approach that he thinks is a huge mistake, which is to disallow these pages. He and Bill then discuss this. [57:53] - Are there any URL best practices that Bill thinks are no longer relevant or no longer true? [59:24] - Bill elaborates on what he meant by saying that there’s no need to localize URLs. [60:58] - Does Bill have any favorite tools for log analysis and looking at what spiders (like Googlebot) are doing? [62:38] - Bill talks about where listeners can find him. Does Bill 46 violate democratic principles? Bill 46, if passed into law, will establish a new Alberta Utilities Commission to oversee distribution and sale of electricity and natural gas, powers which formerly were held by the Energy Utilities Board. A new Energy Resources Conservation Board will focus on the responsible development of energy resources. Bill 46, the Alberta Utilities Commission Act, passed first reading in June 2007. A government news release states Bill 46 is proposed to enhance Alberta's energy regulatory structure. Reviewers of the bill state it reduces the requirements for public notice of major power/energy projects, makes it harder for Albertans to participate in public hearings, and awards the new commission broad powers to deal with anybody who may oppose such projects. Its provisions would be retroactive to June 2003. Although Bill 46 may promise more efficient decision-making with respect to energy projects, presenter Joe Anglin will argue that it is a threat to meaningful public engagement in matters of public interest and violates the principles of democracy including the right to be informed, the right to object, and the right to present evidence in support of an objection. . Speaker: Joe Anglin Joe Anglin is the President and CEO of Anglin Stewart Investment Group Inc. (ASIG), a firm that specializes in managing energy and currency traded funds. He has provided analysis of energy related matters to CBC radio and CNBC television. Joe is also an independent author and writer advocating for social justice. He writes a bi-weekly column for two central Alberta newspapers, the Red Deer Advocate and Stettler Independent. Joe is currently guiding a landowner's group, (Lavesta Area Group) in challenging the tactics used by Altalink and the Energy Utilities Board with respect to an application for regulatory approval of a 500 KV transmission line from Edmonton to Calgary, although he is not directly affected by the proposed transmission line.
