On this week's episode of The Waves, Host Kat Chow dives into the public divorce of actress Sophie Turner and pop artist Joe Jonas. But we're not so much getting into the actual divorce, more the way tabloid news is covering it and leaning into some seriously sexist tropes. As news spread about the marriage's end, articles immediately started speculating as to who was at fault, and tabloids reported using anonymous sources saying Turner was more focused on partying and going out, leaving Jonas at home with their two young kids. Kat is joined by Rolling Stone senior writer Ej Dickson, to dig into the long history of sexist tropes about mothers and motherhood, the “bad mommy” PR spin, and more.  Further Reading: Sophie Turner Isn't A Bad Mom. Podcaster, pop-culture writer and three-time and reigning Ms. Noir City AUDRA WOLFMANN joins us to talk about defending her Ms. Noir City crown, and one of her favorite sub-genres: Beatsploitation. We kick things off with Seijun Suzuki's psychedelic yakuza noir, TOKYO DRIFTER (1966). This isn't Beatsploitation per se, but there are plenty of dudes in mod suits and the film is so incomprehensible that it's gotta be poetry man. Plus it's got jazz, rock and roll, 60s bubblegum pop, and haunting Japanese torch songs. Audra asks if this movie is really a noir, and Bob wonders if it's actually a musical. Either way, Cory gets it right when he says it's a "trip factor 10." Our next film is Roger Corman's dark, beatnik satire A BUCKET OF BLOOD (1959), where Walter Paisley (Dick Miller) becomes a coffee house arts sensation by killing pets and people and covering up his victims with clay. It's one of Roger Corman's best and Hollywood everyman Dick Miller's only lead roles. We also talk about the unexpected dominance of Gweneth Paltrow's new weed brand, the return of Taco Bell's Volcano Menu, how Covid drove Bob to binge on Hostess Ding Dongs, and how the movies are back baby--but at what cost? Audra also discusses her history with Noir City, her all Weird Al burlesque troupe, and her podcasts: SPEAKEASILY VS. THE 80s and RETROPHILIA. If you're digging OMFYS, you should definitely check out and subscribe to Audra's amazing pods: http://www.audrawolfmann.net https://podcasts.apple.com/no/podcast/retrophilia-the-90s-in-music-film-culture/id1598247675 Philena also joins us later on for "The Strike Tok Report," a now regular feature on OMFYS until those cheap studio bastards pay the actors and writers some decent wages and royalties for keeping our asses at home watching Netflix, Hulu and Max (It's not HBO; it's just Max). Dear Midlife...
Building Loving Bonds When the Stakes Are High

Dear Midlife...

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2023 49:57

You know, women in midlife are often starting over in some respects. This time in our lives can be a period of rebirth, reinvention and (if you're Gweneth Paltrow or one of the other fancy schmancy celebs out there) "re-coupling". Regardless, building new relationships at this time in life is imperative, but not always easy. That is an understatement! Girl, have you tried dating these days? And yes...I'm talking to you out there? EVERYBODY comes with some kind of baggage...and when I say baggage, I'm talking about those old-timey trunks they used to pack to take on a ship across the Atlantic kind of baggage. Lol and its hard to unpack THAT kind of baggage and, at the same time, show up with the kind of transparency and vulnerability it takes to forge new relationships when the stakes are high and the relationships are complex and with more than one player involved. Forging romantic relationships not only requires navigating your potential partner's history, but the children and familial ties they bring into the relationship as well. Our guest today, Maria Natapov, is the daughter of divorced immigrants and a stepparent herself and this led her to her work now as a Stepparenting Coach and a Rapid Resolution Therapy Practitioner to help others, heal, expand and grow as she provides support to help her clients navigate these complex relationships to transform chaos into harmony. Today, she shares with us how we can make small shifts during our most difficult seasons to work through whatever challenge we may be facing. And she reminds us that we already have all the gifts and everything we need inside of us right now to do it, it's just about unlocking the path to it. Maria is an expert at helping people navigate new experiences such as stepparenting or blending a family, or building new relationships, in general, where the stakes are high, there are multiple stakeholders each with their own specific needs, and it's necessary to quickly create and build rapport and connection. She also specializes in helping people identify and heal trauma through the Rapid Resolution Therapy modality which helps them shift unwanted or disturbing thoughts, emotions, and actions in a painless, quick, pleasant way (yes, you heard that right...pleasant) with lasting results. When forging new, complex relationships where there are a lot of parties involved and the stakes are high, jumping in with both feet may not be the right approach. It does take time and it is important to know this: identify and get clear on your own boundaries and values (such as how to approach discipline and parenting and what you're comfortable taking on as a step-parent) and then gain alignment with the other parties involved. You are exactly where you need to be right now. Building trust means being vulnerable yourself. Show up authentically, as you are, and don't pretend to be something you're not. Acknowledge and embrace difficult moments and invite conversation about them so as to diffuse the negative energy. Otherwise, the tension within these moments builds and becomes amplified. Our brains are wired to fill in any gaps in factual information with our own narratives and imagination and these perceptions may or may NOT be true. When navigating difficult conversations, make sure you're coming to the table in a regulated frame of mind. And when you're in the process of unpacking that big old trunk, honey, and need some help or support from like-minded women going through the SAME shit, we're your girls. Join our Facebook Community, make sure we're connected on Instagram and share this podcast with a friend. No one needs to navigate the messy middle alone. Another five-day work week in the books & we're on to the holiday weekend! We started you off with the Monday Morning Throwback this week & a new A.I. powered lawnmower that Brian actually had some interest in. Our Monday edition of "Bad News with Happy Music" included stories about Satan-Con in Boston, a sheriff's wife who got busted for DUI after driving her car into someone's home, a violent bicyclist mob that attacked a man for honking at them, a great story about a double amputee who climbed Mt. Everest, and a man who got arrested while pretending to be Captain Jack Sparrow! We discussed a new list of the best movie quotes of all time, and we found out about the "Gather of the Kyles", the "Council of Andrews", and "All the Brians". Weird. Plus, a very interesting Father's Day gift guide from Gweneth Paltrow's GOOP website.  Our Tuesday edition of "Bad News with Happy Music" included stories about a man who drove on the sidewalk to chase children, an alligator that bit a guy's arm off, Lester the Steer got loose, a guy who shot his roommate because he ate his last Hot Pocket, and a bunch of kids & adults arrested for stealing cars. Shaw whiffed on this week's "You're Killin' Me, Shaws", and we talked about some wine stats on National Wine Day. When I saw Gwyneth Paltrow was featured on Dr. Will Cole's podcast The Art of Being Well, a show that I enjoy and respect, I was anticipating a lively and educational conversion. Instead, I was alarmed by the comments that the Goop “wellness guru” made about fasting, nutrition, and aging. In today's episode, I unpack the routine that Gweneth Paltrow described on The Art of Being Well and highlight how her habits reveal a darker side of the wellness industry. I share my personal approach to chasing better outcomes than my ancestors, including how I work on supporting a healthy immune system, optimal mind, and strong body. I find most women are chasing the image of their younger selves, and I've even found myself doing the same thing. But when I bring my focus back to the present moment and who I am today, this is where the real wellness journey is happening. I want to encourage you to block out the unrealistic standards and airbrushed photos that wellness “experts” sell to us, and instead  feel the power that is rooted inside of you and allow yourself to express it out in the world. Listen in to hear my reflection on the current wellness industry trends and influencers.  If you are enjoying these conversations, please subscribe and spread the love by leaving a review and sharing it with your friends.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, or on your favorite podcast platform. Topics Covered: Gweneth Paltrow's response to the public outrage over her interview A metric that for determining if you're overly taxing your adrenal glands My experience with physical and spiritual fasting Understanding what you're really looking for when you reach for food between mealtimes Celebrating the natural cycle of womanhood What feeling younger while growing older means to me today Resources Mentioned:To learn how you can activate your own stem cells with a simple patch, go to: lifewave.com/vitallyyouGwyneth Paltrow: On Approaching 50 Gwyneth Paltrow's photoshoot Get in Touch: My WebsiteInstagramSpecial offers: Download the Daily Vitality eBook at danafrost.com/daily-vitality/Credit:Podcast Production by the team at The Wave PodcastingMusic by Phoebe GreenlandPhotography by Amy Boyle PhotographyPodcast art by SimplyBe. Hour 1: Jerry and Sal are in for Boomer & Gio today. We start with a video that annoyed Sal where players said winning the World Baseball Classic would be better than winning a World Series. Sal thinks this should piss off the fans. C-Lo is here for his first update of the day and starts with Edwin Diaz most likely missing the season with a torn patellar tendon. We heard from Billy Eppler, Justin Verlander and Brandon Nimmo. #15 Princeton upset #2 Arizona. Sal thought Al really went to Princeton when he said he did during the Warm Up Show. Al went to Kean University, not Princeton. #13 Furman upset #4 Virginia. In the final segment of the hour, we talked more about the WBC and how players are choosing their country over MLB, where they actually get their paycheck from.  Hour 2: Are the Jets and the Packers at an impasse as far as  compensation goes for Aaron Rodgers? The person who really has all the leverage is Aaron Rodgers. Anthony in Belleville calls in to reference Hulk Hogan since Sal is wearing a Hulk Hogan jacket. We then went into some wrestling talk from the 80s and 90s. A woman calls because she wants Sal to yell at her. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with reaction from the Mets on Edwin Diaz's season ending injury. Jerry wonders how many games this injury is going to cost the Mets this season. Sal is worried about the Mets. They are loaded on paper, but he's worried about them. Jerry thinks the Mets will do everything they need to do at the trade deadline. Kodai Senga is locked in on the Mets and not on Japan in the WBC. Princeton upset #2 Arizona and Furman beat Virginia. In the final segment of the hour, Al says he hates St. Patrick's Day parades, yet he's wearing a sweatshirt promoting one.  Hour 3: The L.A. Clippers had a plane issue as their plane was hit by lightning during the flight. Sal is getting on a plane today so this is not great timing. Sal is going down to see the Mets in Florida. C-Lo returns for an update but first Sal is starting to get worried about getting to JFK for his flight to Florida. Chris Russo said Steve Cohen has ‘Rembrandts in his bathroom'. The Mets will not have to pay Edwin Diaz, as that will be covered by MLB since it happened at the WBC. The Rangers won last night so C-Lo was happy. In the final segment of the hour, a caller is afraid of getting in a plane crash and then getting eaten by a great white shark.  Hour 4: Sal says we are less than two weeks away from baseball opening day. Jerry asks Sal about Matt Ryan, as he still seems to be in love with him. C-Lo returns for his final update of the morning and starts with reaction from the Mets on the Edwin Diaz injury. We love that we are bringing attention to vaginal health but this idea that your vagina is dirty and should smell like a flower or taste like fresh pineapples is ridiculous. We had a few listeners asking if the Lemme gummies are good for your vagina or are we being swindled? This product suggests that women need to smell a certain way—and that's just not normal and could also lead you worrying about the smell of your own vagina, when it is completely normal. The vagina is actually a self-cleaning oven. Because vaginas clean themselves, no special products are needed to maintain hygiene. Dr. Oakley suggest rinsing the vulva off with warm water is enough to keep vaginas healthy (unscented soaps are safe too); mild soap for body areas with hair, the inner thighs, and the rectum is all you need. I mean, do we talk about penises like this? Nooooooo… LOL - From Kourtney Kardashian's Lemme to Gweneth Paltrow's Goop, are celebrity supplements actually worth the hype??!! Holly & Dr. Oakley will go over this very question in this episode. Thank you for listening. Please send in your comments, questions and suggestions for future topics at TheLadyBodPod@gmail.com.

Marvel's Iron Man: Why Sharing Your Company's Origin Story Builds Stronger Customer Relationships

Remarkable Marketing

Marketers are always focused on what's next. We're constantly planning the next campaign, predicting trends, and conducting research. Always onward! But there's a critical piece of content from the past that you're probably overlooking: your company's origin story. It's a powerful tool you can leverage to detail your company's mission and align customers with your values to get deeper buy-in and drive sales. This week, we're taking inspiration from the origin story that launched an entire cinematic universe: the origin story of Marvel's Iron Man. We're showing you how to apply the structure of the hero's journey to your company's origin story so that your customers become superfans.About Marvel's “Iron Man”Iron Man is a 2008 superhero movie based on the Marvel comic book character created by Stan Lee. The film stars Robert Downey, Jr., as Tony Stark, Gweneth Paltrow as his personal assistant Pepper Potts, Terrence Howard as James Rhodes, and Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane. The storyline follows rich businessman and inventor Tony Stark after he's kidnapped and forced to build a deadly weapon. Instead, he builds himself a high-tech suit and escapes – only to uncover an evil plot to cause devastation around the world. He then vows to fight evil as Iron Man.The Hero's JourneyThe hero's journey is a narrative structure in which a character goes on an adventure, faces a crisis, comes away victorious, and returns having undergone a transformation. Author Joseph Campbell analyzed the hero's journey in his seminal 1949 book, “The Hero with a Thousand Faces.” He defined a hero as “someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” This structure is one as old as storytelling itself; it has been used from The Odyssey to Star War to Harry Potter – and Iron Man, of course! What B2B Companies Can Learn From Marvel's “Iron Man”: Share your company's origin story. Attract your ideal customers by showcasing your company's journey. Telling your story demonstrates your company's mission and fundamental values, and most importantly, it helps you distinguish yourself from your competition. This is especially important as consumers trend towards aligning their values with their spending. How does this apply to Iron Man? We wouldn't appreciate his character without seeing his growth from self-absorbed jerk to the selfless hero he becomes. Even though Iron Man is a billionaire genius living in a Malibu mansion, we are invested in his compelling emotional arc.Show both the successes and the struggles. Let's be real. Starting a company isn't easy. It's a journey – and dare we say it, a Hero's Journey! But part of the Hero's Journey is that you will make mistakes – and no one is immune from this. For example, back in 2015, Apple got negative publicity – notably from Taylor Swift – for offering a free one-month trial of streaming in which artists wouldn't receive royalties. Apple's SVP of Internet Software and Services tweeted an apology: “#AppleMusic will pay artists for streaming, even during customer's free trial period,” and, “We hear you @taylorswift13 and indie artists. Love, Apple.” Not long after, Taylor Swift struck a deal with Apple to stream her latest tour exclusively on the platform. Apple owned up to their mistakes quickly and transparently, allowing them to be on the public's (and Taylor Swift's) good side again. But being transparent about your values also means living up to them as well. The founders of tech company Basecamp have made improving work culture an integral component of their brand. They have published five books related to the topic and make resources like their company handbook publicly available. “Treating people right is fundamental to how we do business,” they write on their website. However, their actions didn't line up with their values. A third of their employees resigned after Basecamp put in place a policy banning “societal and political discussions.” The takeaway? Posting your values on your website is only one step. Living up to them is even more important. And if you fall short of your standards? Apologize and make it right. That's what Basecamp did.Keep telling your story. Every time you make a big decision, make sure it aligns with the values embedded in your origin story. Communicate your reasoning with your audience. Your transparency will strengthen your audience's trust in you – and help you continue to build a loyal group of sidekicks!Key Quotes*”With business storytelling, we focus on the timeline of accomplishments and not the thought and the rigor, the difficulties and the struggles that go into those middle pieces because we don't want to air dirty laundry. But if you illuminate the process a little bit more, you'd get a richer story.” - Ian Faison*”Another element to explaining what your mission is and bringing people on that mission is bringing them on the journey with you and continuously giving them updates on things from a business perspective. I like when there's an emotional connection between me and the brand. And a lot of times a good way to do that is through social media, for example. So, like I use Canva, as an example. And I follow them on LinkedIn. It's the only business account that I follow on LinkedIn. And I actually care what they post because I feel like I'm going on a journey with them. You feel like you're a part of it. And I think that's a really key element to building a relationship with your audience.” - Colin Stamps“If you anchor back to your origin, it shows the reason for your mission. This is why we have these values as a company. This is why we believe in the vision that we're trying to achieve, is having this foundational element of a company that we set out to solve. It feeds into a future looking assessment of where you want to be. And that's why the origin story is so important.“ - Ian FaisonTime Stamps[1:30] Tell me more about Iron Man[4:14] The backstory behind the creation of the 2008 movie[7:28] What can I learn about telling my origin story from Marvel?[11:31] Why is it important to share my company's origin story?[14:39] Do I need to share the messier side of the origin story?
