Dr. James Burt believed women's bodies were broken, and only he could fix them. In the 1950s, this Ohio OB-GYN developed what he called “love surgery,” a unique procedure he maintained enhanced the sexual responses of a new mother, transforming her into “a horny little house mouse.” Burt did so without first getting the consent of his patients. Yet he was allowed to practice for over thirty years, mutilating hundreds of women in the process. It would be easy to dismiss Dr. Burt as a monstrous aberration, a modern-day Dr. Frankenstein. Yet as medical historian Sarah Rodriguez reveals, that's not the whole story. The Love Surgeon: A Story of Trust, Harm, and the Limits of Medical Regulation (Rutgers University Press, 2020) asks tough questions about Burt's heinous acts and what they reveal about the failures of the medical establishment: How was he able to perform an untested surgical procedure? Why wasn't he obliged to get informed consent from his patients? And why did it take his peers so long to take action? The Love Surgeon is both a medical horror story and a cautionary tale about the limits of professional self-regulation. Sarah B. Rodriguez is a medical historian at Northwestern University in the Global Health Studies Program, the Department of Medical Education, and the Graduate Program in Medical Humanities and Bioethics. Her teaching and research focuses on the history of reproduction, clinical practice, and research ethics. She is an entrepreneur and the author of 'Free and Whole: My Journey Towards Education and Freedom as a Fulani and Muslim Girl.'Mariama was born in Spurloop, Wilberforce, Freetown, Sierra Leone. She was born into the Fulani Tribes and lived between Sierra Leone and Guinea. She now lives in the U.S. in New Jersey.  She has fond memories of visiting her grandmother in Guinea, but there was also trauma that she experienced there as well. The Fulani Tribes value more tradition and faith than female rights and education. In her culture the traditions included arranged marriage at a very young age. Her father wanted her to marry at the age of 11 or 12. From fighting to get an education in a culture that values religion over education, manipulated and suffered into circumcision (please note that there is some very personal content in this part of the podcast), choosing not to accept an arranged marriage, and marrying for love. Mariama was able to move out of Sierra Leone to the United States. Listen in to hear how she was able to accomplish this. Mariama shares her determination to carve her own path and create the life that she believes she deserves. She hopes to inspire girls around the world who are on their own paths towards education and independence. Mariama says that this book is for all the women, girls, and others who are trapped by customs, tradition, and religion to encourage and enable them to achieve their dreams. Recently, the U.S. Department of Justice decided to drop the appeal on a 2018 Detroit ruling that overturned the federal ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). For girls at risk of FGM, this federal ruling has put them in great jeopardy because it sent a signal to supporters of FGM that the practice is allowed, and the violence against girls, mostly around 7-8 years old in age continues. Therefore, it’s up to the states to outlaw the practice. What is female genital mutilation? Why is it practiced? How prevalent is it really? FGM is a human rights issue and is a form of gender-based violence and sexual violence against children. And it does not just happen in “other countries” or specific religions. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 513,000 women and girls have undergone or are at risk of FGM in the United States, including girls in families of both Christian and Muslim faiths. Survivors of this horrifying practice rarely come forward due to the taboo nature of the practice and the backlash survivors endure at the hands of their own family and community. The practice is not about religion but about upholding patriarchy and is misogynistic control over women and girls. On this episode, Ameé speaks with Maryum Saifee, a former U.S. Diplomat, FGM survivor and advocate who is speaking out against the practice of female genital mutilation. And in her words, FGM is simply child sexual assault with a sharp object and conversations need to be had to normalize talking about it so that the practice can be stopped. The 9/11 attacks, Islamic fundamentalist terrorism and the heinous practice of female genital mutilation (aka female circumcision) are obviously serious topics. However, when Owen came up with the idea for Glenn to share his theory on how genital mutilation led to 9/11 and Islamic terrorism on the 18th anniversary of 9-11-2001, the decision was made to proceed with Episode 101 in the same “organized fun with a purpose” way of the previous 100. It all commences with the guys laying the spiritual foundation which allows for a logical approach to life in general and why they think all humans (including terrorists) are perfect and righteous. Then Glenn lays out his theory of how the religious tradition of so-called “female circumcision”, which is still prevalent in the Middle East, Africa and other parts of the world, eventually led to Islamic terrorism in general and 9/11 specifically. We begin this episode by once again coming to the rescue of a desperate information seeker, who stumbled onto our site (Google tells us) in a futile search for knowledge that we did not have, until now. How do women pee with wearing old chastity belt in the middle ages? Or did they at all? Not the new chastity belt, mind (that's easy!) the old ones! We know nothing about the true answer, of course, but we don't let that stop us from discussing it at length. And Google Images teaches us all kinds of true or untrue things there are even male chastity belts! It's all quite disturbing, thanks to some dude. Fucker. But at least we answered his question! One final tip: keep T-Bone away from the floral arrangements and the yellow snow. Send us pictures of your friends wearing the chastity belt of your choice by email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net).
