Mary and Alicia use Planta! - You don't need the most expensive soil - but make sure it is well draining soil. - Make sure your pots have drainage. If you don't want to drill for drainage, keep your plant in the growers pot and place inside the outer pot for display then take it out for watering. - Find plants that match your lifestyle. - It is OK if your plants don't make it - even if they're considered "beginner!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Buzz Words From this Episode: Variegation: diversity of colors Root Bound: having roots formed into a dense, tangled mass that allows little or no space for further growth Root Rot: any of various plant diseases characterized by decay of the roots and caused especially by fungi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plants Mentioned in this Episode: - Spider Plant - (Chlorophytum comosum) Also known as spider ivy, ribbon plant and hen & chicken. - Air Plants (Tillandsia) - Crispy Wave Fern (Japanese Asplenium Nidus) - Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum raddianum) Also known as Delta maidenhair fern. - Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica) - Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura) - Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata, Dracaena angolensi or Dracaena pearsonii) Common name varieties include: Bird's nest, twisted sister, mother in law's tongue, rhino grass, Bantel's sensation - Fiddle-Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata) - Aloe Vera - Angel Wing Begonia (Begonia x coralline) - Also known as the cane begonia - Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) - Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum). - ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) - Lavender Plant (L. angustifolia) - Arrowhead (Syngonium podophyllum) Also known as American Evergreen, five fingers, and nephthytis - Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Products Discussed in this Episode: - Alicia's fertilizer: All-Purpose Indoor Plant Fertilizer - Jess's fertilizer: Schultz Cactus Plus 2-7-7 Liquid Plant Food - Moisture Meter: XLUX Soil Moisture Meter ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources: - Indoor Plants and the NASA Air Quality Study - Adorable Airplant Holders

In this month's Chill and Chat, the Plant Daddies go deep with two updates on plants featured in former episodes - Stephania erecta, the charismatic caudex plant from Episode 13, and the Fiddle Leaf Fig from Episode 39. Are they alive? Yes! But has everything gone as planned for these plants? Not quite, but there isn't any bad news! Matthew makes the biggest cut he's ever made, and Stephen "sets himself free."
Fiddle Leaf Figs are BY FAR the most popular houseplant around the world. You can open any home magazine and you will more than likely find one of these in some of the pictures. They make a big impact in a space by filling any corner with lush, large green leaves. In this podcast, I discuss sunlight and water requirements, propagation, questions from Instagram followers and much more! If you have any plant questions, follow Houseplant Homebody on Instagram or Facebook for more information or check out https://www.houseplant-homebody.com/ for info and the corresponding blog post!
TRIGGER WARNING: In this week’s episode, Shannon and Nick discuss cults, religious trauma, and other subjects that might be triggering for some listeners. Please take care of yourself. Join Shannon and Nick for a dive into the murky waters of CULTS! Don’t worry though, they don’t expect you to have twenty folding chairs available at any time (an actual requirement from one of the aforementioned cults), but you will hear Nick report on the experiences of a close friend who was in a cult for a time. They have a long talk about TERFs in the witch community (something that Wands and Fronds vehemently opposes), and specifically discuss the very public and very awful comments made by the founder of Dianic Wicca. On the lighter side of things, Shannon covers a plant with a CULT FOLLOWING (get it?), the Fiddle Leaf Fig. She also accidentally offends wandering Greek poets (again, big apologies), and shares a ritual to help you heal from religious trauma syndrome. To get in touch with these witches to share rubies, invitations to Atlantis, suggestions for Nick’s north-facing balcony, or to just let Shannon have it for her careless comments aimed at the wandering poet community, you can email WandsandFrondsPod@gmail.com or message them on Instagram @WandsandFrondsPod.

What's your favorite plant? Houseplant Appreciation Day is January 10th and I spent some time talking to Meg from Plant Garage in Denver to get the low down on all things houseplants. We talked about the easiest plants to care for, the hardest to keep alive, the best for gifts, and the ones you see everywhere! This interview was filled with mind blowing information that had me reeling and filled with anxiety learning I was potting my plants all wrong!

While we check in on our winterizing efforts and recommendations for movies and TV, we also talk about Stephania erecta, Stephania nova, Tylecodon, and [many] other plants. But don't worry - we still argue! Stephen claims that all succulents are "his thing," and then Matthew gives us a glimpse of the inner turmoil a Fiddle Leaf Fig, thoughts about a potential Dracaena, and a sliver of unoccupied window can cause him. Stephen offers a useful solution that will take nine years.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, we are joined by Sarah Jones Decker, author of the new gorgeous photobook "The Appalachian Trail: Backcountry Shelters, Lean-tos, and Huts". We learn what goes into a project as massive as doing a photo essay of all of the AT's shelters, Sarah's personal favorites, the history of these structures, which have the best privies, and much more. Sarah is also the co-owner of Root Bottom Farms, an organic farm based in North Carolina, and we selfishly pick her brain on how to suck less as plants. Take a trip with Alyssa and Kristen as we divulge the secrets of the Seven Sisters Bridge and all the misery experienced there, before pivoting to the Argo Hotel which is, unfortunately, not based on the film. Ben Affleck would be proud of this one, y'all - better not miss it. Let's go see a ghost (#includewomen)!
Are we still thinking about our Fiddle Leaf Figs? The Plant Daddies attempt a Ficus lyrata deep dive, with special attention paid to those mature plants we may have bought during that craze a few years ago. If yours is now growing into the ceiling and/or misshapen… what now?? Matthew details his myriad attempts to create bushier trees, and then hatches a bold new plan. And don't miss another one of Stephen's vaguely rude descriptions of a plant he just isn't that into!

So thrilled to be joined again by Leslie Halleck after the wildly successful two part episode on Understanding Natural Light (Episodes 46 and 47) last season. After the success of her recent book, Gardening Under Lights, Leslie published a new book this month on propagation called Plant Parenting. Today Leslie joins me to discuss not the techniques for propagation, by how plants actually multiply. If you are on any photo sharing website and looking at home decor then I bet you have seen a Fiddle Leaf Fig in the background you just might not have known it. They have giant leafs that can instantly give a room color, life, and complete it all together. I should warn you, they are a little tricky to keep. So if real plants aren’t your thing then you can get a large faux Fiddle Leaf Fig plant for your home. If you want an easier real plant for you home to welcome spring I really recommend the snake plant also known as the mother-in-laws tongue. It needs water every few weeks not that much sunlight which makes them so tolerante for many owners. Tip of the Day-When you are selling your home get greenery and put it in your home. Get house plants that you like and can move with you to your next home, on your kitchen table or island a big bowl of green apples and at the front door nothing beats the curb appeal and welcoming someone to your home like two giant boston ferns! Buyers, if you are in a rental get a house plant and enjoy it in your rental and then bring it with you to your new home. It will instantly give warmth to your new space! Truth or Fail-If all agents were forced to wear a warning label, what would yours say?Don’t forget to play Would you rather on Instragram tomorrow just follow me @realtorjoyfraser. Alan Yip, Masters in Horticulture and Biodiversity, joins today for a discussion on houseplants. Alan is an expert on orchids, and we will do an upcoming episode specifically on those. Here we talk about all things houseplants, focusing on ones which are easy to grow, tips for making them thrive, and common problems and solutions. We also dive into which houseplants are the popular ones currently. We’ve gone retro, because 1970’s houseplants are in! The Fiddle Leaf Fig, also known as Ficus Lyrata, has been steadily taking over our instagram, pinterest and drool worthy magazine spreads for some time now. It seems to be many interior designers favorite planty accent to a room. Although it may be a plant that’s a go to for design, it isn’t a recommended “beginner” plant, as it’s been known to be somewhat finicky or high maintenance. Today, Erin Kobayashi, of the instagram account @leighkiyoko, joins us to talk all things Fiddle Leaf Fig. Erin is the proud plant mom of TWO fiddle leaf fig trees: Figgy Spice and Notorious F.I.G. and she joins us to discuss her journey caring for these plants and what she’s learned along the way. She is also the cofounder of the #FLFFriday hashtag with @alina.fassakhova and shares the reason for creating the #flffriday movement. In this episode we learn: -The story behinds Erin’s personal collection and what plant she is loving these days -The stories behind her two insta famous Fiddle Leaf Figs- Notorious FIG and Figgy Spice - Fiddle Leaf Fig Care 101- water, light, fertilizing, pruning Types of Fiddle Leaf Plants Why they are so appealing - Why Erin created #FLFFriday with Alina Mentioned in the conversation: Fiddleleaffigplant.com Black Coral Taro (Colocasia Esculenta) Follow Erin and Figgy Spice and Notorious FIG IG: @leighkiyoko Use #FLFFriday to connect with other Fiddle Leaf lovers in the world! and follow the other founder @alina.fassakhova Follow Bloom and Grow Radio: Garden Club: www.bloomandgrowradio.com/garden-club IG: @bloomandgrowradio Facebook: www.facebook.com/bloomandgrowradio www.bloomandgrowradio.com Special thank you to the Bloom and Grow Radio Media Plant Lady Intern Chelsey Zaplachinski for editing this episode!
