“Garmonbozia” is the first single from audio pioneer Flying Lotus since 2022, but don’t think he hasn’t been busy since then. Recently, Steven D. Bingley-Ellison (or FlyLo) has expanded his palette by co-writing, directing, and scoring for the horror anthology V/H/S 99 as well as other ghoulish flicks. This Twin Peaks inspired track follows a similarly spooky path, sounding as though it’s coated in a viscous syrup with the bassline dripping into a steady beat. P.S. We wish FlyLo a very happy birthday today.

As broadcast February 25, 2022 with plenty of masks for all who wish to remain anonymous in their podcast adventures. Tonight we welcome a guy to take over the playlist who has truly been making his own way both in style and substance in the music world while maintaining his secret identity via encrypted Scooby Doo mask. His meld of heavy beats, lo-fi, and indie rock stylings have gained great attention from some important names over the past several months, and he lined up a great playlist of influences and songs he's personally worked on in the studio. Amazingly fun guy to talk to about music, this is an artist to pay attention to and a show not to be slept on.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Danger Mouse – What More Can I SayGriffith James – Obscene BoyJW Francis – Sweet As A Rosesanchez. – Little BirdCHAI – Miracle (Scoobert Doobert remix)Scoobert Doobert – I'm An Idiot Part II (31:10)Shadow Community – Restless Song Meaningful Stone – A Call From My DreamVillagers – The First DayJoan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Get My BearingsBADBADNOTGOOD feat Karriem Riggins & Arthur Verocai – Beside AprilGhost Funk Orchestra – A Song For Paul Part III (62:43)Scoobert Doobert – Think About ItAndrea Chahayed – Who KnowsLittle Simz feat Obongjayar – Point and KillDijon – Many TimesCHAI – WHOLEMatthew E. Flying Lotus is one of those producers who creates an entire aesthetic world with the music he makes. Over the past 13 years he’s released four solo albums, and produced tracks for a ton of artists including Kendrick Lamar, Thom Yorke, and Thundercat. In this episode FlyLo talks to Rick Rubin about visiting his great aunt Alice Coltrane’s ashram, his peak creative hours, and why he directed a horror movie despite being scared to death by the Thriller video as a kid. In this episode, we discuss our new Appreciation Month and how it’s affective in this country’s current climate. Some gentlemen found a way to abandon this atrocity, and we’ll tell you how they did it. We will also be going over the latest new music. Linafornia is a beat maker who honed her craft in Leimert Park. The swing, bounce, and intangible funk of her beats express a true sense of soul that many producers are never able to achieve. She's part of the first generation of beat makers to be inspired by the Low End Theory / LA beat scene mainstays like Ras G, Dibia$e, and FlyLo. In fact, seeing Ras G perform one night moved her to pick up beat making. Finding out he was a friend of her brother's who only lived a few blocks away from her only furthered the desire, and Ras quickly became a big brother and mentor. I saw her perform at his memorial last year and was almost moved to tears watching her fight back her own. Knew then I needed to talk to her and learn more about her journey.Hear her talk about growing up Garifuna, attending and eventually leaving Catholic school, and Pharrell inviting her to the studio.-Lee See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Flying Lotus' brand of music is so off-the-wall, it's hard to describe it as anything other than "Flying Lotus' Music". But the great-nephew of Alice Coltrane is undoubtedly inspired by jazz, and that shows in his two monumental albums, Cosmogramma and You're Dead! With elements of instrumental hip-hop, electronic, soul, and more coming together in a one-of-a-kind fusion, Flying Lotus captures the soul and paints pictures of the universe and afterlife on these two projects. Matt and Rav delve into the songs and elements that gives FlyLo's music such power, look into his influence on jazz and hip-hop, and make a required investment in better audio quality. How inspiring.Podcast art: Pamela HerringIntro/outro music: Seth Greenberg
Oh lawd, we ain’t messing around this year. Without Flying Lotus, the much vaunted Brainfeeder jazz/hip hop/electronica scene that gave rise to Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, Kamasi Washington and Anderson .Paak, wouldn’t exist. Although those guys had all been in each other’s orbits for a while, it took FlyLo’s record label to really bring attention to all of the good shit that was coming out of LA in the late 00s and early 10s. He’s worked with all of those artists, and yet he’s remained obstinately, steadfastly different. Beginning his career doing instrumental hip-hop a la DJ Shadow, he’s crossed multiple genres on his way to substantial underground success. Bringing his rich heritage of jazz to an entirely new audience by splicing it with IDM, Drum n Bass, hip hop, psychedelia and electronica to absolutely stunning effect. Comsogramma is his third album, and as we will go on to argue, marks the moment when his musical vision grew more cinematic and ambitious. He pours everything he has into this cosmic whirlwind of an album. Every version of FlyLo is heard on this record - from jazz fusion freak outs to lush string laden experimental hip hop and everything in between - has been expanded on ever since. But this, this is where the artist is truly born. Is it his best work? Does it deserve a place in our discography? You decide.
This week, our guest Mike Avarant finally gets his chance to introduce the crew to California musician/producer Flying Lotus (aka FlyLo) and his 2008 release “Los Angeles”. What did the guys think of this critically-acclaimed electronic release? Brainfeeder founder Flylo caught up with Radd ahead of his set at London’s Field Day Festival. George Clinton described him as the next generation of Funk Musicians" along side Thundercat and Kendrick Lamar.
This week, two of our favorite Bullseye guests. First up: Ellie Kemper, star of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. If you haven't seen it, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has a pretty unusual premise. A woman emerges from a mid-western bunker. She's been held captive there by a cultish kidnapper. She and her fellow captives are national news. So, she moves to New York, the one place she can think of where no one will care. The mix of characters and dense, super joke filled pace has earned Kimmy love from critics and a bunch of Emmy nominations - Ellie's up for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series this year. Then, Flying Lotus. Jesse talked with the musician back in 2010, he'd just released his third record, Los Angeles. Born Steven Ellison, he was at the head of a burgeoning beatmaking scene here in LA that would eventually leave a huge, lasting impact on pop and hip hop. Over the course of five records, dozens of collaborations, FlyLo has created lush, kind of psychedelic soundscapes. It's a little disorienting sometimes, but it's always gripping. Now, Ellison's directed his first ever film. It's called "Kuso," and it's probably one of the most intense, and frankly gross, movies to come out in the last few decades.

Sri Lanka’s SMPRSN (alternate alias Daffy Maestro) is the next selector to contribute to our growing music division here at Wild City. The Kandi based artist, known to his peers as Gihan Senevirathne, has been making tunes at home since the late 90s. He put out his debut four track EP ‘Home’ on Soundcloud under the name Daffy Maestro in 2013, playing with lo-fi, bass centric electronic sounds with a touch of experimentation. He came into the spotlight as Daffy Maestro in 2010, after he began contact with Border Movement and Colombo based DJ, producer and label owner Asvajit. The last year has seen him play live in his country and also recently in Mumbai for the Border Movement Sound Lab, where he performed and collaborated with acclaimed Indian and German acts including Sandunes, Aqua Dominatrix, SnowShoe and Sasha Perera, Toto Wolf and Oren Gerlitz - together known as Perera Elsewhere. Senevirathne’s Wild City Mix echoes the streamlined auditory aesthetic of SMPRSN which explores the dark contemporary bass and future garage inflected electronica that hs influenced the artist. You’ll notice a lot of familiar names and possibly familiar tunes in this star studded mix, which, with featured artists like Nosaj Thing, Burial, FlyLo, Amon Tobin and so many more, can really do no wrong. SMPRSN’s mixtape begins with some warm 80’s synth jams courtesy Come Truise and gets progressively dancier and at times, darker, with some stellar electronic compositions. Its sound takes a bass heavy turn midway with The Bug’s taking over, then moves on to the splintered beats, ghostly samples and earworm vocals of Burial and Ghostek and ends on a surprising ambient note with Need A Name. We recommend a good pair of headphones for this one. Tune in, you’re going to like it. Thanks to the mans like Illum Sphere and Jonny Dub, Groovement landed these two LA hipsters in front of its microphone back in April: Gaslamp was playing fastbecominglegendary club night Hoya Hoya together with Sean Vinylment of Finders Keepers at the Roadhouse in Manchester, while FlyLo was visiting the Mint Lounge on a Monday night in an event put on by Hit n Run, Hoya Hoya and New Bohemia. A little warning: the FL interviews swerves into deep geek territory. If you’re averse to videogames and comics, turn away after the first twenty minutes…
