There's a lot of great content out there. So why not find inspiration there? Sample it, remix it and make it your own.In this episode, we're turning to one of the greats when it comes to sampling: the late rapper and producer J Dilla. Together with the help of our guest, Head of Marketing at Crowdcube, John Hills, we're talking about borrowing from content that's already out there, building your content IP, and never losing your human touch.About our guest, John HillsJohn Hills is Head of Marketing at Crowdcube, Europe's leading equity crowdfunding platform. To date, they've helped raise over £1.4 billion for over 1,300 businesses and built up a community of over 1.7 million members. He joined Crowdcube in April of 2022. Prior to his current role, John led the marketing team at FrontFundr, Canada's leading equity crowdfunding platform. There, his team helped 70+ companies raise more than $90M and built up an investor community of over 32,000 people. He has also previously held marketing roles at Duuers and Founder Institute. Outside of work, he is a bass player, marathon runner and a record collector. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Donuts:Sample, sample, sample. Just like J Dilla samples from Dionne Warwick, The Temptations, Run-DMC and more on Donuts, you can borrow ideas from content that's already out there too. You don't have to come up with something totally original every time. John says, “When you're doing content marketing, the bar is incredibly high. You can feel quite overwhelmed. Like, I don't have the budget that Apple has, neither do I have the brand expertise or the people to do it. That doesn't mean that I can't have an impact. I can still be scrappy. I can still look at what's working and create things that are memorable and valuable for people. And so I think that you can just look at what's already out there and how you fit into that rather than feeling you have to create something new. You can take what's there, see what appeals to people and see how you can make that memorable and impactful as well.”Build your content IP. John says, “You could create a load of content and just farm it out. [But instead] why don't you find a problem that your customer really cares about, name it so you're acknowledging it, you're identifying it, and then exist only to solve that problem. You become known - you become synonymous - with that content IP.” For J Dilla, his calling card - what he was known for - was a horn sampled from Isaac Hayes. And John says, “I kind of think of that as his content IP. You know it's him. It's giving you what you want, which is a dopamine hit of great music. He's being there for you. And I think that's what we have to do as marketers too, right? Like basically find your Isaac Hayes horn and blast it where appropriate.”AI's a useful tool, but never lose your human touch. John says “that's really what's going to land with people and what's going to resonate.” It's like how J Dilla sampled from live recordings, which John points out have slight imperfections and variations from a studio recording. He says live recordings catch your ear, engage you more and are more memorable.Quotes*”Sampling is interesting because you're channeling your interests. You're like part curator, part creator. And like that is truly what a marketer is. It's just a perfect metaphor for modern marketing.” - Ian Faison*”If you want to engage and build an audience, you want to be known as someone that's bringing them the good stuff. You filter through. You know which places to look, which is what [J Dilla's] doing on the album. Like, ‘I know this really particular little piece of a song which I dug out from a record shop and turned into something that sounds really cool for you.' In the same way we, as marketers, have an attention economy, right? So it's kind of ‘Why should you have to pay attention to me rather than someone else?' I've done the hard yards and I'm bringing you the good stuff, packaged neatly in a newsletter or a podcast or on a social feed.” - John HillsTime Stamps[0:55] Meet John Hills, Head of Marketing at Crowdcube[2:44] Exploring the Genius of J Dilla and Donuts[10:39] Sampling in Music and Marketing: Creativity Unleashed[22:13] AI in Marketing: Keeping the Human Touch Alive[26:30] Crafting a Content Strategy at Crowdcube[27:42] Content Strategy: Educating Companies on Equity Crowdfunding[28:19] The Art of Content Distribution and Engagement[29:04] Crafting High-Quality, Educational Content[31:18] Innovative Campaigns: From Invoicing Templates to Cricket Burgers[40:25] Leveraging LinkedIn for Demand Generation[44:26] Broadening Horizons: Beyond Marketing Books[46:53] RecommendationsLinksWatch Parks and RecreationConnect with Jen on LinkedInLearn more about IntellimizeAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. The search for business financing can be frustrating. Banks don't want to lend to you because they say your company is too risky. Venture capitalists say you're not fundable. And angel investors? Well, they can be hard to find. Is crowdfunding the answer? Kickstarter and Indiegogo can work well—especially if you can offer great rewards and you're excellent at online marketing. But there's another way to raise money from the crowd. It's called equity crowdfunding. Now you can sell shares of your business to just about anyone. And no, it's not just for tech companies. What is equity crowdfunding? Equity crowdfunding—also known as crowd-investing or investment crowdfunding—lets startups and private businesses raise capital from the public (i.e., the “crowd”). Basically, it allows everyday people to invest in your business and in exchange, you offer them equity in your business (think Shark Tank and Dragon's Den). Each investor is entitled to a stake in your company proportional to their investment. And these days, anyone can be an investor. This type of fundraising has always existed, but until recently, you could only sell your business shares to accredited investors—relatively wealthy individuals who met specific net worth and income criteria. Now, your cousin, your neighbor, or almost any public member can buy shares as a non-accredited investor, provided you set your business up properly (more on that later). Equity crowdfunding vs. crowdfunding Crowdfunding refers to raising money from the public, primarily through online forums, social media, and crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter to finance a new project or venture. In return, these people might get a reward, like a copy of what's being produced, for example, or nothing at all. Project creators on Kickstarter and similar platforms maintain 100% ownership of their work and business. With equity crowdfunding, the crowd can fund your business or project. In exchange for relatively small amounts of cash, public investors get a proportionate slice of equity in your business venture. How does equity crowdfunding work? Navigating the equity crowdfunding landscape can be pretty confusing. Typically, securities and those who offer securities to the public must be registered and subject to regulation. Securities regulation protects investors by ensuring that investors obtain the information they need to make an informed decision, and that issuers are held accountable for any misrepresentations or fraud. But equity crowdfunding is considered an exception. In recent years, regulatory bodies have allowed registered platforms to act as an intermediary between crowdfunding issuers and your investors. But that means you can only raise financing this way by signing up for a registered equity crowdfunding platform in your country or region. There are plenty of equity crowdfunding sites out there right now, but you should do your research to find the right one for your business. In general, FrontFundr is one of the best Canadian portals for equity crowdfunding and in the USA, SeedInvest and Indiegogo are the better options. And depending on your campaign and how many investors you're looking for, it may even be an option to use more than one platform. While the structure of your offer, including the equity percentage and the type of securities you will sell, is a bit complicated and best done with the help of your lawyer, the process of creating a campaign is fairly straightforward. Here's a general overview of how the process works in the U.S. and in Canada: Sign up for a registered equity crowdfunding platform. Set up an offer on a registered equity crowdfunding platform and raise funding in exchange for real, legal shares in your company. Make your pitch. Once accepted by your platform, you have to prepare your crowdfunding pitch. This is the most time-consuming part of the process and may involve frequent iterations to keep interested going. You'll also have to determine your pitc...

Lori discusses the current Frontfundr, equity crowdfunding campaign that is currently underway at Betterwith (the why and benefits of crowdfunding), some brand building and marketing tips (hint: get out of your own way and get into the spotlight), as well as what she wanted / didn't want to build into Betterwith after what was learned from the experience of her first business - the famous ‘Cupcakes' (co-founded with best friend Heather White) of which the hit reality TV Show 'The Cupcake Girls' was born. In this episode, Hall welcomes Bryan Saint-Louis, Pastor, Investor & Host of the M.A.D. Casters Podcast. M.A.D. Casters focuses on people who are looking to make differences in their lives (financial freedom, spiritual growth, personal growth, etc) and those actively making differences in their communities (nonprofits, charities, social justice, organizations, etc). The goal is to inspire those around us to be the change they want to see. Bryan is currently a Youth Pastor in Calgary, Canada. He has worked in the youth sector for much of his adult life. Youth work was never something that he had considered in the past but was something that he truly fell in love with once the opportunity was in his journey. He worked as a youth specialist at a juvenile detention facility in Michigan. It gave him a realization about life that he has never seen before and was the catalyst that opened his heart to youth mentoring. Bryan eventually became a teacher and principal at a school for at-risk youth who were on the path most likely where they would not graduate high school. He often likes to use the phrase "youth that are misunderstood" rather than at-risk because once you actually get to know them, their stories tell you why they're in their current predicaments. His approach has always been to look at life through a different lens in order to see the full picture. He mentors youth and helps them figure out their passions. The concept of impact has led him to build M.A.D. Casters (Make a Difference Podcast) where they highlight high-impact leaders, people, and organizations that are actively changing the world around them. As an investor, Bryan started into the space of private equity two years ago. Ever since then, he has not looked back. He has invested in 80 companies through equity crowdfunding platforms. He's also a brand ambassador for FrontFundr. He's invested in cryptocurrencies as well. Bryan advises inventors and entrepreneurs, shares how he sees the crowdfunding industry evolving, and discusses his investment thesis. You can listen to the M.A.D. I wanted to share my experience and thought process on small private equity investments through new innovative companies like FrontFundr and Invesdor. It's important to note that private equity is a very risky investment and should not be considered an option for everyone, it really varies based on your personal situation and you should consult a certified financial planner and definitely sleep on it before heading into this territory. I am not a CFP or a financial professional, I'm just a regular guy sharing his own thoughts and findings. For me personally I am going to mitigate my risk by keeping it a small portion of my portfolio (less than 10%, maybe 5%) and also I have evaluated my own risk tolerance to be very high and that falls in line with my pension plan and goal horizon.
