Ep #50 with Syed Musheer Ahmed, Finstep Asia Syed Musheer Ahmed has two decades of extensive experience in the realms of capital markets, fintech and virtual assets – including a decade as a global markets' trader, prior to coming to Hong Kong to attain his MBA from the University of Hong Kong and London Business School's joint program. Since 2016, Musheer has contributed extensively to building the region's fintech and virtual asset ecosystem, particularly as the co-founder and the inaugural general manager of the Fintech Association of Hong Kong. For the last five years, he has been the managing director of FinStep Asia – a firm which he founded to provide Venture building and empower cross-border bridges across Asia . In the interim, from October 2022 to January 2024, he served as a financial markets risk assurance lead as part of the foundational team of the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in Dubai. In this episode of Regulatory Ramblings, Musheer chats with host Ajay Shamdasani about his background, growing up in India's information technology hub, Bangalore, his initial training as an engineer and his stint as a regulator in the Mideast's Manhattan. As the discussion progresses, Musheer reaffirms his faith in Hong Kong as a place for FinTech and crypto entrepreneurs, discussing what it is as about the city and the field that continues to attract and marvel him. He also stresses that in the evolution of FinTech, the field has long since passed the nascent stage and is no longer all that new and glamorous since the advent of iPhone in 2007 and Satoshi Nakamoto's paper on Blockchain first released in in 2009. Yet, he acknowledges that technological innovation continues, as he shares his thoughts on the regulatory approaches taken across Asia by mainland China, India, Singapore and Hong Kong – and the similarities and differences between some of the major jurisdictions. While virtual assets which have evolved in some parts of the world, in others, they are still somewhat of a grey-zone. Musheer also comments on the prospects for cross-border crypto regulation in the Asia-Pacific or even internationally evolving to the level of harmonized rules, or even mutual recognition or common passporting – as was discussed a decade ago for the investment funds sector. He also shares his views on how the choice between stablecoins and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) is not binary. Musheer emphasizes it is not an either-or choice because both fulfil different purposes. The conversation concludes with his assessment on the potential for Hong Kong and mainland China to collaborate with the FinTech and virtual asset hubs of the Middle East such as Dubai. June came and went bringing with it some pretty spectacular noteworthy news, that our show is ready to comment!Matteo Rizzi invited previous #NFF host himself Ali Paterson, and got Darren Franks to connect from Cape Town to help us with a more global perspective. For the first time, the company made a presence at the event, proving the value of collaboration across the sector, and increasing the expectations for SIBOS 2022 this year in Amsterdam for the first time. And of course, #buythedip - with the non-stop fall of cryptocurrencies and even GAFAMs, is it possible to achieve healthy returns? What about the booming rise of African-based fintechs - such as Ghanian Fido with a new 30M$ round? Africa is non-stop breaking investment records. Is this trend to continue, and how is it possible to scale it up? He has also worked at UBS, Oliver Wyman, and PwC. “You’ve got to be in the game and not on the sidelines; otherwise, you are never going to get involved to the degree you need to make things work for you.” Benjamin Quinlan Worst investment everInvesting in cryptocurrency with all the hypeIn 2017, there was all this hype going on around cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin was literally on the financial news headlines every day. As a strategic consultant, Benjamin likes to put a lot of data and thought behind how he looks at new opportunities and new developments, particularly in the financial services industry. So Benjamin deployed his team and tasked them with cracking this new cryptocurrency. His focus was on learning what this ecosystem was all about and the real value of this very elusive Bitcoin that everyone kept referring to. Finding a way to value BitcoinAs Benjamin and his team tried to crack Bitcoin, they realized that nobody knew its worth. Analysts in the market said it was worth zero, while the peoplehttps://myworstinvestmentever.com/ep53-ralph-woodcock-following-the-crowd-into-bitcoin-disaster/ ( rushing to invest in Bitcoin) were saying it was worth a million. But they were all in agreement about one thing; there were zero methodologies and approaches to valuing Bitcoin. The team sat down and worked out how to value this new currency. The team came up with four different methodologies. Every single method pointed to the fact that this was a massive speculative bubble. Sharing his report with the marketBenjamin and his team concluded that Bitcoin was just a speculative investment that would plummet in no time. At the time of Benjamin’s research, the price of Bitcoin was around $20,000. In Benjamin’s report, he predicted that the price of Bitcoin at the end of 2018 would be $1,800. By the end of the year, it hit $3,100. Claim to fameBloomberg cited Benjamin’s report as the most accurate crypto forecaster in the world. The report got so much coverage around the world and even made it into Quora and Reddit. The advice he had but never tookOne day, Benjamin was on international TV, CNBC, and the anchor asked him, “So Benjamin, given all of your research and analysis and thought process, are you shorting Bitcoin?” He said, “No, we do not. Because as an independent consulting firm, we do not get involved in the investment side.” Benjamin watched as Bitcoin continued to plummet throughout the year and could not help but think about the amount of money he could have made from backing the advice he and his team were so confident of. But alas, he did not do it. It would have been great to put his money where his mouth is. Lessons learnedThe success of any investment lies in thorough researchWhen considering an investment, including cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, do thorough research first. Do not just look at technicals and theories. You need to look at what is going on in the broader market too. Back your thought process with convictionYou will not always get everything you do right but no matter what happens, always back up your decisions with conviction. If you strongly believe that your decision is right, then stick by it. Andrew’s takeawaysTake a small position and grow it over timeJust because your gut tells you to do something does not mean you have to go all in. Invest just a little

What does the concept ‘Islamic finance' say to you? Is it solely pegged to a religion from the Arab world? In this episode, we want to shed some light on this fascinating topic, cut through some of the misconceptions, and tell you more about how this well-established, yet very different, banking culture works and what it has to offer. In our third podcast hosted by Helene Panzarino, she talks to Syed Musheer Ahmed, founder of Finstep Asia and co-founder of Fintech Association of Hong Kong. Musheer shares his vast knowledge of Islamic finance, and explains the core foundations and principles that underpin banking for the Islamic community. As Musheer highlights, even though Islam originated in the Middle East, it's now very much a global religion with close to two billion followers all around the world. What‘s more, even though Islamic banks adhere to the core tenets of Islam, this doesn't necessarily mean that Islamic finance is just for Muslims. The entire world can adopt and benefit from these practices with their strong ethical base: where ‘money' is seen as a means to exchange goods, and never as a way to generate ‘interest', and both profit and risk should be shared. Find out more about Musheer via his LinkedIn profile. ‘Banking on Air' is the official Vacuumlabs podcast covering the challenges, opportunities, perspectives and opinions that matter to you and to our community. "When you do your first big punchline, and you have a crowd whiplashing and applauding...something happens to you. It's an out of body experience. That particular skillset is a good gift to give back to the world" Ben is the Founder & CEO of Quinlan & Associates, an independent strategy consulting firm, specialising in the financial services industry. He set up the firm back in 2016 having paid his dues in the Investment Banking world at UBS and Deutsche Bank, and in the Management Consulting world with Oliver Wyman. You’ll often see Ben quoted for his market views on Bloomberg, CNBC, and Reuters. Ben is also heavily involved in the rapidly growing Fintech scene here in Asia and just a few days prior to recording this he was elected as the new Chairman of the Fintech Association of Hong Kong. The secret sauce that makes Ben unique is that come Friday night he leaves the boardroom, swaps his suit and tie for a t-shirt and jeans, and performs on stage as a Stand-up Comedian. He is a regular headliner at Comedy Clubs all across Asia, won the 2017 Hong Kong International Comedy Festival and has opened for a number of big international comedians on their Asian tours, including Russell Howard, Kevin Bridges and Tom Segura. One of my favourite sayings is that clarity of speech, reflects clarity of thought, and in that regard, this episode is an absolute masterclass. We touch on many topics including:Ben's philosophy on leadership and building successful teams The importance of doing what you loveThe sacrifices involved in running your own business His worst ‘bomb’ on stage as a comedian How humour gives him an advantage in the workplace How watching his father live out his dream was the best lesson he ever got in what it means to live a successful life.Links:Benjamin Quinlan on LinkedInQuinlan & Associates Comedian & Speaker ProfileTEDx - Creativity at your feetTEDx - Supercharged FearHome of the Podcast: www.michaelxcampion.com IG: @playingtheinnergame@michaelxcampionJoin the weekly newsletter www.michaelxcampion.com/subscribeOther mentions:Eckhart Tolle - The Power of Now

China is quickly becoming home to the largest fintech ecosystem in the world, benefiting from historically low use of traditional banking, high smartphone penetration, a changing demographic and a consumer acceptance of banking without traditional infrastructure. Dominated by giants like Baidu, Ant, PingAn and Tencent, combined with many highly successful start-ups like WeLab, the success in delivering both personalized financial services and an impressive level of financial inclusion is a model for the rest of the world. This is not a story of disruption of legacy banking as much as a story of filling a previously unmet need for advanced financial services supported by smartphones. To discuss how fintech firms have benefited from open access to data, and how the Chinese consumer benefits from value added services not available to most in the world, I am joined by my friend, Matt Dooley, founding board member of the Fintech Association of Hong Kong and founder of Connected Thinking Ltd. who guided a tour of Shenzhen for myself and the former global CEO of HeathWallace, Dave Wallace.

FinTech in Japan is far more advanced than most outside observers imagine it to be, and based on new deregulation and government incentives, finTech in Japan is about to accelerate even more. Today we sit down and talk with Toshio Taki, co-founder of Money Forward, advisor to Japan’s Financial Services Agency, and the head of the FinTech Institute of Japan. He not only tells the story of the founding and growth of MoneyForward -- one of Japan's finTech success stories, but he outlines how the Japanese government’s plans to promote financial innovation while still maintaining the integrity and stability of the industry as a whole. The Japanese banking regulators are, at least in this sense, far less conservative than you think, and they are setting up a finical ecosystem in Japan that will lead to far more innovative finTech startups than we are seeing coming out of Europe of America. It’s a great discussion, and I think you’ll enjoy it. Show Notes How banking and credit card use is different in Japan Why most Japanese need multiple bank accounts Why finTech is evolving differently in Japan Who really controls household finance in Japan How Money Forward was reluctantly pulled into the B2B market How Japan's FSA is promoting finTech and financial innovation in Japan How the FSA is forcing Japan's banks to open up to innovation Links from the Founder The Money Forward homepage Japan's Financial Services Agency Connect with Toshio on LinkedIn [shareaholic app="share_buttons" id="7994466"] Leave a comment Transcript Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan’s most successful entrepreneurs. I’m Tim Romero and thanks for listening. Okay. For all of you fastidious followers and fanatical fans of all things FinTech, I have a fantastic show for you today. We’re going to sit down and talk with Toshio Taki, co-founder of Money Forward, about how the Japanese government is forcing the banking sector to allow startups to innovate. Well, perhaps forcing is too strong a word, let’s just say that Japanese banks are being strongly encouraged to work with startups. Now, Toshio studied under Peter Thiel at Stanford before co-founding Money Forward which has become the leading personal finance app in Japan. He’s also an advisor to Japan’s financial services agency and the head of the FinTech Institute of Japan. After listening to Toshio, you’ll understand why the Japanese banking regulators are far less conservative than you might imagine them to be and why the Japanese financial sector is about to become a whole lot more competitive than what exists in Europe or North America. Of course, this being Japan, risks must be understood and managed. And Toshio walks us through the Japanese government’s blueprint for fostering financial innovation while still maintaining the integrity and stability of the industry as a whole. This episode is required listening for anyone who wants to understand the future of FinTech in Japan. And you know, Toshio explains that much better than I can so let’s hear from our sponsor and get right to the interview. [pro_ad_display_adzone id="1411" info_text="Sponsored by" font_color="grey" ] [Interview] Tim: So I’m sitting here with Toshio Taki, the co-founder of Money Forward and head of the FinTech Association of Japan. Toshio: Cancelled meeting today and I’m very excited for this podcast. Tim: I’m glad to have you here because I think FinTech in Japan right now and Money Forward, it’s pretty amazing space to be in. Before we get started on the overall market, let’s explain what Money Forward is. I know it’s online financial management software that you sell to individuals and small business but tell us more about what it actually does. Toshio: Sure. In brief, Money Forward operates two types of businesses. One for the B2C where probably the most familiar name would be mint.com.
