Ella Al-Shamahi speaks with two women from the Netherlands and Finland about what's working, what isn't and what needs to change to better support young people in the justice system.Marlen Salonen from Finland used to be a personal trainer but two years ago became a prison officer at Vantaa Prison in Finland, a remand facility for male prisoners awaiting trial or sentencing. She works on the juvenile ward supporting boys held in custody.Fleur Souverein is a psychologist from the Netherlands. She currently works as a senior researcher at the Academic Collaborative Centre for Youth at Risk and as a postdoctoral researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Alexander Rinnooy Kan (1949) grew up in The Hague. He graduated in Mathematics from the University of Leiden in 1972. In the same year, he acquired a Candidate's degree in Econometrics at the University of Amsterdam. From 1973 to 1977 he taught mathematics and statistics at Delft University of Technology. During that period, in 1976, he obtained his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. Between 1977 and 1991 Rinnooy Kan held senior academic positions at Erasmus University Rotterdam and other European and American universities. He was rector magnificus of Erasmus University from 1986 to 1989, has published widely in professional journals and holds a number of honorary degrees. As Chairman of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), a post he held from 1991 to 1996, Rinnooy Kan was one of the main representatives of Dutch business. He was member of the ING Group Executive Board from 1996 to 2006. Rinnooy Kan has been Chairman of the Netherlands Social and Economic Council from 2006 to 2012. In 2012, he was appointed as Distinguished University Professor at the University of Amsterdam. In June 2015, he was elected to the Dutch Senate. He sits on a variety of boards and has advised the Dutch government on numerous occasions.

This week on the podcast we spoke with Drs. Rutger Engels and Ginie Servant-Miklos, who recently staged the "Bildung Climate School," a part-type summer pilot program in Rotterdam, the Netherlands that draws inspiration from the model of the Danish folk high school as described by Lene Rachel Andersen in The Nordic Secret as well as from the microcolleges in the United States. Carefully structured from a research perspective to test pedagogical strategies and program impacts for future prototypes and initiatives, the Bildung Climate School brought together students from differing tracks of the Netherlands' highly stratified post-secondary education system for 2 hours per day for 9 weeks during the summer of 2024. The program they experienced put into practice elements of what Ginie calls "the pedagogies of collapse," combining a frank examination of the sobering ecological and economic challenges facing humanity with embodied artistic and social practices and techniques for working through anxiety, building community, and even having fun.Ginie Servant-Miklos is an engaged environmental educator with fifteen years of experience in education practice, research, and advocacy. She currently holds an Assistant Professorship in behavioural sciences at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Her research and education work focuses on developing innovative pedagogies for societal impact. She developed the Experimental Pedagogics educational design framework, co-founded the Bildung Climate School with Prof. Rutger Engels, and is the author of Pedagogies of Collapse: A Hopeful Education for the End of the World as We Know It. She is a Senior Fellow of the Comenius Network for educational innovators in the Netherlands. She is the founder and chair of the board of the FairFight Foundation, an organisation that provides girls and women from Zambia, Zimbabwe, and India with the mental and physical benefits of martial arts practice, as well as educational support. Ginie is a vocal activist for sustainability and gender equality, advocating for change through public engagements like TEDx talks, debates, podcasts, and other digital media outlets. Ginie obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Kent, an LLM in International Law from Kent Law School, an MA in International Relations from Sciences Po Lille, a PhD in Education Philosophy and Psychology from Erasmus University Rotterdam, and a post-doctoral research grant in Sustainability Education from Aalborg University. She was also a visiting professor in Experimental Pedagogics at Tyumen University.Rutger Engels, PhD, is an award-winning full professor in Developmental Psychopathology, at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), and a board member of the venture philanthropy ‘De Verre Bergen'. Dr Engels received his MA in Psychology at the University of Groningen, his Ph.D. at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maastricht, followed by a post-doc at Utrecht University. In 2001, he was appointed as a professor in Nijmegen. From 2014-2018, he was CEO of the Trimbos Institute, the National Institute for Mental Health and Addictions, and a distinguished professor in Developmental Psychopathology at Utrecht University. From 2018-2021, he was Rector Magnificus of EUR, one of the top public research universities of Europe. Currently, he is cofounding a specialized mental health clinic on psychedelic-assisted treatments. His fundamental and applied research focuses on mental health and substance use in adolescents and adults. In the last decades, he has coordinated programs aiming to design, test, and ship (technology-enabled) interventions for mental health, addictions, resiliency, and personal growth.

Growing up in the last years of the Cold War motivated Gabriele Jacobs to enter academia and play her part in building peaceful societies. Jacobs works at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where she researches the role artificial intelligence (AI) can play in public safety and the ethical debate surrounding this.She describes how experiments are being conducted on beaches in the Netherlands to see if AI can be used to predict human behaviour. These experiments also test the ethical, legal and social implications of this use of AI, and question who has the power to choose the definitions used in the algorithms. Jacobs' work addresses Sustainable Development Goal Number 16: to promote peaceful and inclusive societies and justice for all. Remco Vermeulen - Revitalisation of Dutch Colonial Urban Spaces

Some of the most challenging issues post-colonial societies face involve managing the physical remnants of their colonial histories. In Indonesia, centuries of colonialism left many buildings and spaces with strong colonial identities. While some of these spaces are now abandoned and forgotten, others are being remembered and revitalised. In this episode, Tito Ambyo speaks with Remco Vermeulen, a PhD candidate at Erasmus University Rotterdam and coordinator of international cooperation in collection management at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. Remco's professional experience informed his presentation at the EuroSEAS conference in Amsterdam this year on the revitalisation of Dutch colonial urban spaces in Indonesia. His ongoing PhD research examines how young Indonesians interact with and perceive these revitalised spaces. Remco shares fascinating insights from his research survey and visits to Dutch colonial buildings in various Indonesian cities. His findings reveal an intriguing disconnect: while many young Indonesians view Dutch colonialism negatively, they often appreciate the aesthetic and functional aspects of colonial architecture. Jewellord “Jojo” Nem Singh is an Assistant Professor in International Development at the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. In 2020, Jojo was awarded a grant from the European Research Council for the five-year project Green Industrial Policy in the Age of Rare Metals: A Trans-regional Comparison of Growth Strategies in Rare Earths Mining (GRIP-ARM), for which he is also affiliated with us here at IIAS. His new book is Business of the State: Why State Ownership Matters for Resource Governance, forthcoming later this year from Oxford University Press. The book includes analysis of multiple sites, including the case of the State-Owned Enterprise (SEO) Petrogras in Brazil. The guest interviewer, Pietro Erber, worked for Eletrobras for many years and was a consultant for the World Bank and for the World Energy Council. He was also the director of the Brazilian Energy Efficiency Institute and writes for newspapers on economics and energy policy. In their conversation, Jojo and Pietro dive deep into the context of Brazil and its relationship to extraction, State-Owned Enterprises (SEOs), as well as corruption and the Lava Jato scandal in Brazil. In covering these topics, they also explore what it all might reveal about growth strategies for states in Global South more broadly, particularly in an era of decarbonization and the race for cleaner technologies. Shadi Sharif Azadeh is an associate professor at Civil Engineering and Geosciences faculty and the co-director of SUM Lab (Sustainable Urban Multi-modal Mobility) at TU Delft. Previously, she worked as an assistant professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam, in the group of Operations Research and Logistics. She holds a PhD in Mathematics (operations research) from Polytechnique Montreal where she received doctorate excellency award at University of Montreal (CIRRELT) as well as Michael Florian Award for best PhD thesis research award in Canada. Her areas of expertise include integration of operations research with behavioural models for transport, mobility and logistics networks (Choice Driven Optimization). More precisely, her current major projects are related to: (i) developing methods to tackle uncertainty with a special focus on forecasting and scenario generation for passenger mobility and parcel delivery services; (ii) combining pricing and assortment optimisation methods to model supply and demand interplay for last mile trip/delivery; (iii) developing real-time methods to incorporate in combinatorial optimisation framework for large-scale transport problems; (iv) special focus on designing sustainable multi-modal transport systems; and (v) introducing solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change on transport networks. She is an Associate Editor at Transportation Science, an editorial board editor at Transportation Research Part B: Methodological, editorial board member of Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies. She serves as an Associate Editor of Nature Series (npj) Sustainable Mobility and Transport journal. ACRC defines inclusive urban reform coalitions as partnerships between government, experts and civil society organisations – often directly involving communities and groups most directly affected by the issues at hand – to drive sustainable urban transformation.In this episode, Shuaib Lwasa, ACRC's capacity strengthening lead and professor of urban resilience and global development at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, talks to Ezana Haddis Weldeghebrael about building and sustaining reform coalitions, drawing on his experiences as founder of the Urban Action Lab (UAL) at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.He discusses how knowledge co-production became the most important aspect of the UAL's research, along with challenges around bringing together disadvantaged and advantaged groups, and how academics and researchers in the contemporary urban space should play a bridging role between communities and other actors – to identify commonalities between different interest groups and empower communities to advocate for themselves.Highlighting the importance of decency in urban development, he argues that there is a need to look beyond standardisation to achieve this, and to embrace alternative methodologies and tools – such as reform coalitions and other bottom-up approaches. Shuaib Lwasa is professor of urban resilience and global development at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. Hendlin is assistant professor at the Erasmus School of Philosophy, and core faculy of the Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity Initiative at Erasmus University Rotterdam, as well as research associate in the Environmental Health Initiative at the University of California, San Francisco. Hendlin's research has been published in journals such as Annals of Internal Medicine, BMJ, MMWR, American Journal of Public Health, Environmental Ethics, Ambio, and Environmental Philosophy. The international press regularly features Hendlin's public health research. Hendlin's interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects tackle major questions in philosophy of biology, environmental philosophy, and political philosophy. Hendlin's epistemological inquiries into public health follow the via negativa of agnotology, comprehending the systemic transmission of ignorance. Hendlin earned a PhD in Philosophy (magna cum laude) at the University of Kiel, Germany in 2015; holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, UCLA, and the London School of Economics; and held postdoctoral research fellowships at the University of Vienna and the University of California, San Francisco. I loved this conversation with Professor Sandra Langeslag where we talk about the science of love. She shares her research on ways that we can identify and navigate the various stages of love. Bio: I earned my Ph.D. in Biological and Cognitive Psychology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in The Netherlands. I moved to the United States in 2011 to become a post doc at the University of Maryland. I became an Assistant Professor in Psychological Science / Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Missouri - St. Louis in 2014. I was promoted to Associate Professor last year and I am now also Associate Chair of the department. I have three research lines. I study how 1) love improves cognition such as attention and memory, 2) love distracts people from other tasks such as homework or work, and 3) how we can increase or decrease our love feelings using cognitive strategies. Then, we welcome to the podcast the brilliant Dr. Daphina Misiedjan from Erasmus University Rotterdam (https://www.eur.nl/en/people/daphina-misiedjan) to help us better understand the evolving legal and cultural debates concerning Rights of Nature. Daphina surveys the places around the world where Rights of Nature has become an active political discussion, beginning with Ecuador and its pathbreaking constitutional recognition of Pachamama. We talk about the challenges Rights of Nature interventions face in overcoming European colonial law and legal principles like terra nullius that naturalize extractivist and individualistic property relations. We compare Rights of Nature movements to Universal Human Rights movements and discuss where rights meet obligations. We turn from there to Daphina's research on Yemen, the first country projected to run out of drinking water. We talk about the ethical questions raised by endemic water shortages in places like Yemen, South Africa and California. René Belderbos is full professor of Strategy at KU Leuven (Belgium) and part-time professor of International Corporate Strategy at Maastricht University and UNU-MERIT (The Netherlands). He received a doctoral degree in economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research focuses on innovation strategies and international business strategies of multinational firms, including real option theory in international business, location strategies, global knowledge sourcing, top management teams and internationalization, international R&D collaboration, intellectual property rights and innovation, and knowledge spillovers. Dolores Romero Morales is a Professor in Operations Research at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. Her areas of expertise include Supply Chain Optimization, Data Mining and Revenue Management. In Supply Chain Optimization she works on environmental issues and robustness. In Data Mining she investigates interpretability and visualization. In Revenue Management she works on large-scale network models. Her work has appeared in a variety of leading scholarly journals, including European Journal of Operational Research, Management Science, Mathematical Programming and Operations Research, and has received various distinctions. Currently, she is Editor-in-Chief to TOP, the Operations Research journal of the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research, and an Associate Editor of Omega. She has worked with and advised various companies on these topics, including IBM, SAS, KLM and Radisson Edwardian Hotels, as a result of which these companies managed to improve some of their practices. SAS named her an Honorary SAS Fellow and member of the SAS Academic Advisory Board. She currently leads the EU H2020-MSCA-RISE NeEDS project, which has a total of 14 participants and a budget of more than €1.000.000 for intersectoral and international mobility, with the aim to improve the state of the art in Data Driven Decision Making. Dolores joined Copenhagen Business School in 2014. Prior to coming to Copenhagen Business School, she was a Full Professor at University of Oxford (2003-2014) and an Assistant Professor at Maastricht University (2000-2003). As Laura and I are big fans of her work, we were excited to speak to Payal Arora, researcher, author, professor, and speaker. Diane is also adjunct faculty at Yale University, where she teaches a workshop on Aesthetic Values in a Changed Cultural Context for its Theater Management MFA and a doctoral candidate at Erasmus University Rotterdam (in the Netherlands), where she lectured 2011-2015 in the cultural economics and sociology of the arts programs. #32 – Having literally circled the globe during the course of his career, and living in 8 countries along the way, Zach Desson would probably describe himself not as a nomad but as someone open to new experiences. Leaving his home town when he was 18 to volunteer in Peru is where his journey began before he headed back to Canada to start university as a political science student at Wilfrid Laurier University. After graduating, he spent some time working for the Red Cross but continued to look for his next big adventure. After considering becoming a fighter pilot, he decided he wanted the experience of being a paramedic, so he started school once again, this time at Centennial College. After graduating and working for years in the heart of downtown Toronto, Zach began to feel the burnout that so many of us experience at some point in our careers. As he pondered what to do next, he realized that his recent experience had opened his eyes to some of the gaps in the healthcare system so Zach set out to impact change on a greater level. Looking to further his education once again, he looked overseas as his French passport allowed him the privilege of studying in a variety of European locations. After settling on a European Master in Health Economics and Management from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Zach dealt with the same instability that we all did – the Covid-19 pandemic. We discuss 'Player Chemistry: Striving for a Perfectly Balanced Soccer Team' with Lotte Bransen. This paper builds on the VAEP framework previously introduced Lotte and her colleagues, in order to quantify player chemistry. Our discussion covers details of the paper along with general challenges of estimating player chemistry in soccer and other sports, as well as the importance of interpretable machine learning. Lotte Bransen (@LotteBransen) is a Lead Data Scientist at SciSports, where she leads the Data Analytics team that develops analytical tools to derive actionable insights from soccer data. An avid soccer player herself, Lotte primarily works on developing machine learning models to measure the impact of soccer players' in-game actions and decisions on the courses and outcomes of matches. Prior to SciSports, Lotte obtained a Master of Science degree in Econometrics & Management Science from Erasmus University Rotterdam and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Utrecht University.
