In this engaging episode of the podcast, host Brian sits down with Dan Cleary, the charismatic lead singer of the renowned heavy metal band Striker. They dive into an in-depth discussion about Striker's latest electrifying single, "Give It All," which serves as a powerful tribute to the quintessential 80s action movie soundtracks that have inspired generations. Dan elaborates on his profound admiration for the music and cinematic flair of that influential decade, shedding light on the band's creative journey in crafting the new song. The track notably features an evocative saxophone line, a deliberate nod to the unforgettable montage sequences that defined many action films of the time. The conversation then shifts to Striker's eagerly anticipated album, "UltraPower," marking a significant milestone as it's the band's first project in several years to be shaped with the guidance of a producer. Dan provides a sneak peek into the album, revealing that each song carries its own distinctive personality, promising a diverse and thrilling listening experience for fans.Amidst the excitement of new music, Brian and Dan touch upon a more somber note as they discuss the recent departure of the band's drummer. Despite this lineup change, Striker remains resilient, with Dan reflecting on the band's past accolades and the healthy competitive spirit they share with fellow Canadian metal band Unleash the Archers. As the episode progresses, Dan offers his perspective on the Canadian rock and metal scene, with a special focus on their home base of Edmonton. He highlights the unique challenges and opportunities that have shaped the local music community, and how Striker has carved out their own place within it.The podcast wraps up with Dan Cleary sharing his thoughts on Striker's electrifying live performances, which are renowned for their raw energy and connection with the audience. He also teases the band's future musical explorations, hinting at the exciting directions Striker may venture into next, ensuring that fans have much to look forward to from these metal titans.Find Striker here:https://www.striker-metal.com/Find CTMU hereLinktreeNewsletter: https://concertsthatmadeus.aweb.page/p/f065707b-2e34-4268-8e73-94f12bd2e938Save 10% on Band Builder Academy membership by following this link https://bandbuilderacademy.com/Brian_Concerts/join and using promo code "concerts" at signup Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/concerts-that-made-us. Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today we're reviewing the new album Ultrapower from Canadian trad metal crew Striker. Packed into the 41 minute runtime comes an album that very much reminisces the 80s, albeit with a completely modern musicianship and production. The riffs are plentiful, the vocals high-pitched wailing, the drumming fast and clear, the bass guitar strong and snakelike, and the production puts everything right in the front where it should be. There are no ballads and no filler. Striker doesn't deviate from the retro sensibility with any modern silliness like operatic vocals, massive orchestrations, or prog stylings. This comes straight from the era of metal's old days when Maiden and Priest were extreme metal. Ultrapower is loud, proud and completely fucking hair metal through-and-through, and the band exploit that nostalgia in every possible way. So, how good are the actual songs here? Well, to be honest, and as we would say back in the 80s - they all rule! To give a more detailed breakdown, let me have you close your eyes and picture yourself circa 1985 the standing in the hair metal arena as the house lights dim. As the pyro goes off Striker hits the stage with the blazing, straightforward "Circle Of Evil," which rips forth with killer Motley Crue-esque leads and riffs, and outstanding melody. Striker channels Y&T on "Best Of The Best,” an uptempo, hooky as hell track which capitalizes on a strong driving riff and furious drumming to create a sense of urgency. “Give It All” features guest instrumentalist Kenny G… okay, not really, but… really Striker? I love wind instruments in my folk metal, but this is a bit much and I have a playlist reputation to uphold. The next track "Blood Magic" is a high-octane blazer with so many different things going on at once that your head will spin. “Sucks To Suck” is a party-rocker with some killer vocal melodies and heavy guitars that sear and chill with a furious intimacy. "Ready For Anything" has great, trilling guitar-work and a catchy chorus that rivals anything Ratt or Dokken put out back in the day. "City Calling" is a jaunty power-disco anthem with a cool, commercial atmosphere that I'm uncomfortable with how much I enjoyed. Maybe my pick for best song on this thing. “Turn The Lights Out” and "Thunderdome" are more full-speed-ahead AOR, with the former giving hints of Riot V, and then as if straight off the Top Gun soundtrack we get "Live To Fight Another Day." The show and album closes on a high note with the aggressive and hilarious "Brawl At The Pub," leaving the listener at this point exhausted yet still wanting more. The band moves at a forceful rate throughout Ultrapower, pulsating with energy as a unit and just ripping forth walls of sound and having a damn good time while doing so. Dan Cleary's soaring hard rock vocals are brilliant in every track, and he often dips into his bag of tricks to do something unexpected. The twin axe attack of Tim Brown and John Simon Fallon make no pretenses about showing off their skills, preferring to make the songs the thing and any display of their technique secondary. Striker exudes innocence here in the way that they seem to want nothing more than to create this music, have fun and make old school metal fans happy. I enjoyed Ultrapower, but for those like me who can be lactose intolerant of 80s metal cheese, this album can be a difficult one to digest. I mean, we've come a long way since the 80s with so many new metal subgenres and bands doing things that put that bygone era to shame. But I get there are many who will find Ultrapower to be written exactly to their musical tastes, whether they be grey hairs who recall the actual 80s or younger metal fans who just love the aesthetic. My own suggestion: sample this album in moderation to see whether it works for you, but proceed carefully if you feel any bloating. Ultrapower is released on February 2nd from Record Breaking Records.

Guitarists Tim McIlrath and Zach Blair enjoy tenacious tones with rock's mightiest tag team—Gibsons into Marshalls—aided by a few everyman effects and one mythical stomp. Rise Against rose out of Chicago around Y2k on the back of roaring Gatling-gun guitars, blast-beat rhythms, and defiant, sharp-tongued social commentary. The band's first pair of albums—2001's The Unraveling and 2003's Revolutions Per Minute—are blistering bangers rooted in traditional hardcore chaos, spiced up with fist-pumping, boot-stomping choruses. Siren Song of the Counter Culture in 2004 was their major-label debut, on Geffen. That album highlighted a broadening hardcore sound buffed up with more melody. (Think '90s Bad Religion messaging cloaked in early 2000s AFI harmonies.) However catchy they became, their message still ripped like a dagger. Appealing to a bigger audience with bouncier hooks, acoustic numbers, and string overdubs earned them their first splash into the Billboard 200 albums chart (eventually certified gold in the U.S.). Elevated visibility scored them back-to-back platinum albums—2006's The Sufferer & the Witness and 2008's Appeal to Reason, and that momentum carried over to a continued residency in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 with 2011's Endgame, 2014's The Black Market, and 2017's Wolves. And 2021's Nowhere Generation represents a maturing, melodic hardcore outfit that continues to stand up for what they believe in and still provide the revolutionary attitude to back it up. The continual growth and evolution of their melodic-hardcore formula has allowed them to roll into mainstream airwaves like a Trojan horse. Newcomers who were enamored with anthemic choruses ("Savior," "The Prayer of the Refugee," "Nowhere Generation," "Give It All," "I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore") quickly became dancing disciples because of the band's knack for earworms. The twin-guitar team of singer Tim McIlrath and lead guitarist Zach Blair welcomed PG down to Birmingham, Alabama's Avondale Brewing Company to see how their simple-but-stinging https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-rise-against (setups have morphed since 2015). Songs for a New World is not a typical piece of American musical theatre. There is no book or “story”, per se, with a standard beginning, middle and end. There are no characters to follow from Act I to Act II. There are no lavish production numbers and set and costuming are minimal. “Songs…” is exactly what it says it is – a collection of stories told through song. They are by composer/lyricist Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years, Honeymoon in Vegas) and were apparently written over several years for several different projects while he performed in New York City nightclubs and piano bars. Brown has linked the 16 songs in the piece by the barest of threads. As Brown himself says, “It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.” It’s about the choices we all make in life. The production is a labor of love for producer Lucas Sherman, best known to the local theatre community for his work as musical director and pianist on numerous projects for a variety of companies. Sherman retains that role in this production as well as taking the reins of stage direction and performer. Joining Mr. Sherman for vocal duty are Robert Finney, Daniela Innocenti-Beem and Kat Ray. Mr. Sherman also retains piano-playing duty and is joined by Abe Newman on bass, Quinten Cohen on drums, and Erica Bergeron on percussion. The songs are written and performed in a variety of styles ranging from pop and rock to gospel and jazz. Half are solos, the rest are duets or ensemble numbers. Some are comedic, some are dramatic, some are inspiring, some are downbeat. Regardless of tone or design, they all have the feel of musical theatre, so much so that you almost wish there were entire shows written around some of them. For such a variety of style and themes, a versatile cast is required and Sherman provides one (including himself.) While experience does tell, each performer is given his or her own moment to shine. For Finney, it’s telling the story of a youth overcoming the hardships in life and pressing on in “The Steam Train.” Kat Ray’s moment came with “Just One Step” the darkly comedic tale of a woman’s futile attempt to get the attention of her husband from the ledge of their high-rise apartment building. Sherman acquits himself quite nicely with his earnest delivery of “She Cries”. Dani Beem, clearly the most experienced performer and most comfortable in a musical revue-type show, showed her versatility with her regret-filled woman looking back at what money couldn’t buy in “Stars and the Moon” and as a frustrated Mrs. Claus in the show-stopping “Surabaya Santa”. Beem also nicely duets with Sherman in “I’d Give It All for You”, a song about lovers reuniting after realizing they can’t be apart. The aforementioned musicians provide these performers with excellent accompaniment which is no small feat due to the variety of styles at play. Being it’s really more of a staged concert than a full-fledged musical production and it’s staged in the Spreckels’ small Condiotti space, errors or missed notes would not be easily masked. No such concerns with these talented musicians. The musicians were just as much a pleasure to listen to as the singers. Songs for A New World is a difficult show to review as it is actually 16 different shows in one. Rather than subject you to 16 mini reviews I’ll just say that, like in most shows, some songs hit better than others – both in form and delivery – but that collectively it’s a very appealing night of song and theatre. Because of its unfamiliarity, it’s the type of show that demands an audience’s attention. As with any good storytelling, there are rewards to be had from careful listening. You may not know the songs, but you’ll be glad you heard them. Songs… can be heard Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons through May 7. For more information, go to spreckelsonline.com
Pastor Dawn McCann/Matthew 6:33 We can operate in a dimension where we can see things the way God sees them and operate in His power, in His Kingdom and His promises. Everything stems from relationship, and relationship comes from hearing God's voice. We must think higher and realize there are higher consequences to our decisions. What we have been called to do is what we will be judged upon at the judgment day, not just what we actually do. We all have the same things to offer to the King and to build the Kingdom: Time, Talent, Energy, and Finances. What are you sowing of your time, talent, energy and finances to go after God's presence? Do you want to operate without limits? Do you want the power of God to be with you and move through you? To enjoy the fruitfulness it will bring, it is up to ONE PERSON. That person is you. A fully surrendered person who wants to GIVE IT ALL.
In episode 141, Peter is joined by returning guest Phill of the Off the Turnbuckle Podcast for a non-spoiler review of the 2017 reboot Power Rangers. After the break, they get into details and spoilers! Outro music: Give It All (ft Santigold & Vince Staples)
