Season 2, Episode 6, AJ talks to Tom Hambridge., multi-Grammy award winner. Although he grew up in Buffalo, he really made his name in Boston after he graduated Berklee in the early 80s. He started out drumming and singing lead for guitar legend Roy Buchanan, created his own band: T.H. and the Wreckage and also quickly became the “must have” drummer when any legend needed a back up band. Since then he has become the “must have” songwriter and producer for such artists as: George Thorogood, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Delbert McClinton, Meat Loaf, ZZ Top and many others. He has even won or been nominated for Grammys for his work with: “Kingfish”, Kenny Neal, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Johnny Winter and Susan Tedeschi. He is currently on tour as the drummer in blues legend Buddy Guy's band as well as the opening act. To say I am exhausted just typing that is an understatement, but somehow AJ covers all this and more. A must listen with an extraordinary talented musician.

By the mid-80s, The Channel was a successful venue. Big-name acts played The Channel in lieu of theatre and even arena shows. The legendary Roy Orbison played his final shows at the club. Bo Diddley and Ron Wood brought their “Gunslinger’s Tour.” Management increasingly relied on alcohol sales to subsidize the ever-growing costs. Rent was climbing. Slam-dancing was a regular occurrence, as were rising insurance costs. Ownership was distracted with other endeavors, leaving the club exposed. Everyone has a story. Some are able to tell their stories in a way that transforms the listener. Others, have a story that can change people but cannot seem to share it due to fear or some level of fear that minimizes the sharing. Ethan Freckleton had been so filled with fear that he was unable to lift himself up at one point and then something changed. He recognized that fear was the only thing between himself and his dreams. On this episode, Ethan, known as the Ambassador of Fearless Storytelling, shares how he went from feeling trapped to live his life out loud and helping others do the same. Ethan shares several powerful questions you can ask yourself to shift you from feeding fear to nurturing hope and more. If you are, or have ever been stopped by fear, this episode is for you. Bellingham, WA based Ethan Freckleton continues the tradition of honest storytelling, whether that’s in the form of Americana - melding a heavy influence of blues and country music with the louder and heavier guitar sounds of the grunge era that he grew up with - or as an author of speculative fiction. As an author, Ethan Freckleton has helped hundreds of people start living their best lives with ‘The Change Habit,’ and entertained thousands more with his fiction. His debut novel, PROPHET OF VIRTUE (March ‘18), was a humorous exploration of the oft-dysfunctional Seattle software culture. Recent releases include OF DONKEYS, GODS, AND SPACE PIRATES (May ‘19). As a songwriter, devoted to writing great songs, he has continually refined his approach while studying the craft of songwriting with hit writers - among them: Jeffrey Steele, Tom Hambridge, Hugh Prestwood, Angela Kaset and Don Henry. Their teachings left their mark, as Ethan emerged with his own brand of sincere, soul-infused rock n' roll. Notable releases include FINALLY (March ‘16), EMPTY PALACE (May '14) and UNLIMITED LOVE (May '13) recorded in Hawaii, THE CRAZY THINGS WE SAY(Feb '12) recorded with his band and produced by Johnny Sangster(Mudhoney, Maggie Bjorkland), as well as ALL SHE NEEDS (June '12) recorded in Nashville and produced by Jim Reilley (New Dylans). He has been carried in rotation on independent and commercial radio stations around the globe, from the UK's HOT RADIO 102.8 to Southern FM 88.3 in Melbourne, Australia; as well as in the USA on such stations as Los Angeles' KPFK 90.7 FM and Hawaii's KTUH 90.3 and KKCR 90.9. Ethan is currently the host of THE FEARLESS STORYTELLER podcast, and busy penning the third and final book in a humorous science fiction trilogy. As a musician, he’s an alumni of Seattle, WA area bands The Troublefakers, Alectrophobia, The Disappointments and Lust for Kicks. As a teenager, he shared the stage with blues greats RL Burnside, Lonnie Pitchford, Dave Conant. https://www.ethanfreckleton.com/

For 15 years, Altered Five Blues Band has been winning audiences with a swaggering stomp of bruising, barrelhouse grit. According to Downbeat magazine, frontman Jeff Taylor “sings powerfully” and “Jeff Schroedl’s live-wire guitar reaches the high bar of mixed invention and fluidity.” Blues Bytes magazine declares the group features “the funkiest rhythm section outside of Memphis.” For its fourth album, Charmed & Dangerous, the Milwaukee-based quintet joins forces with Blind Pig Records, one of the world’s premiere blues labels. Produced by multi-Grammy-winner Tom Hambridge, and featuring guests on harmonica and backing vocals, the 13 tracks of original, contemporary blues prove worthy of the recent groundswell of acclaim. American Blues Scene proclaimed the album “will be making huge waves… one of the year’s best.” The group’s third album, Cryin’ Mercy, reached #3 in the iTunes blues store, hit #1 on the Roots Music Report blues album chart, and won “Best Self-Released CD” at the 2015 International Blues Challenge. The band was also named “Blues Artist of the Year” at the 2014 WAMI Award Show, and was recently asked to contribute a track (“Tightrope”) to a Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute album being released in early 2018. Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, December 19th to hear the latest from Milwaukee’s Altered Five Blues Band – WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour.

Kenny Neal stands tall among the younger generation of blues players. His trademark brand of blues, featuring a combination of Louisiana swamp blues, funky rhythms and soul-deep vocals, powered by his slashing guitar playing and--on his solo albums--loping harmonica, puts him at the forefront of contemporary blues players. He’s the second-generation bluesman under the Neal brand following in his father’s footsteps, the great late Raful Neal. Slim Harpo gave him his first harmonica and by the time he was 17, he was performing with his dad and Buddy Guy. He’s recorded extensively since 1987; including 9 albums with Alligator Records and 3 for Telarc. His latest effort is Bloodline on Cleopatra Records produced by Tom Hambridge and features several generations of family blues musicians.
