Let me start with this: this is a dream interview. If, like me, you spent a lot of time in the 2000s and 2010s reading about celebrity online, Go Fug Yourself was an essential part of your online diet. Heather and Jessica were simply unrivaled when it came to celebrity fashion in general and red carpet fashion in particular. I idolized them the same way I idolized Lainey Gossip — both of whom I read alongside all of my graduate texts in star studies. The problem with those star studies is that they were always rooted in the past. But The Fug Girls and Lainey, they were doing the analysis now, on celebs who were desperately (and often unsuccessfully) attempting to navigate the new, digital gossip landscape — and that's how they became part of my dissertation, on the history of celebrity gossip, themselves. That's why it's such an absolute f-ing treat to talk to Heather and Jessica about the present and future of celebrity gossip: they have the context. They know the history. We talk about Deuxmoi, sourcing, blinds, accounting for past shittiness, so much. Melody had to jump in like 17 times to make us explain various peak 2000s gossip terms here, so if you were part of that universe (HELLO, TOOTHY TILE) you will love this episode — but if you weren't, and you just appreciate an introspective look at how celebrity discourse works, you'll love this, too (in part because Melody made us explain stuff, she's the best). Note: This episode was recorded just before the Blake Lively/New York Times bombshell so don't get mad that we don't mention it!! Welcome to episode three of three in my royal fiction series, which we started with Katharine McGee, continued with Linda Keir, and are finishing with Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, authors of both The Royal We and The Heir Affair. I would argue that The Royal We released in 2015—actually kickstarted this trend of royal fiction that continues and continues today. In this book—which is inspired by the love story of Prince William and Kate Middleton—we meet an American girl, Bex Porter, who meets a dreamy guy named Nick while at Oxford, and finds herself accidentally in love with, casually, the heir to the British throne. Interestingly, the American aspect was introduced by Heather and Jessica in 2015, before Prince Harry ever met Meghan Markle the next year, in 2016. In 2020, the follow up to The Royal We, The Heir Affair, was released, and in this book, we find (slight spoiler alert here) Bex adjusting to royal life, including a scandalous secret that turned her wedding to Nick into a nightmare, leaving them in self-imposed exile. Trying so hard to not give spoilers here. In this book we get to know the character of Freddie more, and—you know what, you just need to add these two books to your summer beach bag, and you just need to read the books. Because if I keep going, I'm going to give plot points away, and I don't want to do that. I am so thrilled to have had the chance to chat with the dynamic Heather and Jessica, who, in addition to writing these two books, are the creators of the unparalleled celebrity fashion blog, Go Fug Yourself, and are known as such as The Fug Girls. In addition to The Royal We and The Heir Affair, they've also written two young adult novels, Spoiled and Messy, and have written everywhere from New York Magazine to Vanity Fair to Cosmopolitan, The New York Times, The Washington Post, W, Glamour, and more. One thing we actively and intentionally avoid in this conversation is the real-life happenings of the royal family—so if you're looking for dish and juice on that, you'll be disappointed—but you won't be disappointed in this chat, which is fantastic. In this conversation, we prefer to stay in the fictional world of Bex and Nick and Freddie, and I think you'll find that you'll enjoy it there with us. These two women are phenomenal. Abby's got notes on Firefly Lane, My Unorthodox Life, and the premiere date for Daisy Jones & the Six. Then she's joined by her friends Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan of Go Fug Yourself to dive into their shared lifetime love of soap operas and melodrama in general. In what they've now decided will be the first of a series (complete with a cliffhanger!), they get into the ways ‘80s and ‘90s daytime and nighttime soaps shaped the culture—and their minds. Think Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, All My Children, One Life to Live, Dallas, Dynasty, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and more.

Novelists and Go Fug Yourself editors Heather and Jessica are back to talk about the Sex & The City...update? reboot? whatever you call it, you can also call it And Just Like That. And you can ALSO call it "tone-deaf," "cringey," and "a clumsy character assassination," as the legendary HBO sit-rom-com returns with a bunch of new characters, and one very notable absence. Is there anything to relate to here? Does the show, as it used to, still do a couple of things extremely well while being exhausting the rest of the time? And couldn't they just have given Samantha COVID? Later, Dan Cassino was NOT a crackpot for suggesting that many Netflix properties would benefit from a faster watch speed, and then we went Around The Dial with Love Life, Live In Front Of A Studio Audience, The Big Leap, The Monkees, and Call My Agent!. Listener Laura hoped there wouldn't be "Bad Blood" between her and the panel when she submitted yet another X-Files ep for the Canon. Yellowstone won, wasting the court's time lost, and we contemplated the legendary hookups of the Big Apple in a non-regulation Game Time. Grab a sad fascinator and have a listen to an all-new Extra Hot Great! GUESTS

Before the pandemic, we were the show that invited scholars, makers, and professionals out to brunch for informal conversations about their work, and we look forward to being that show again one day. But for now, we’re recording remotely to maintain physical distancing. It’s still a pretty fantastic job.Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan are the authors of four novels, most recently The Heir Affair, which was published this summer by Grand Central and is the sequel to their bestseller, The Royal We. Much like the two of them, the books are witty and hilarious, following the lives of a fictitious, modern-day British royal family from the perspective of a young American woman who falls in love with the heir to the throne while both are studying at Oxford. And it’s fitting that Heather—a 1999 Notre Dame grad, by the way—and Jessica should write about royals because they are something akin to internet royalty themselves. They are the creators of Go Fug Yourself, the iconic website that bears witness to “fantastically ugly” celebrity fashion. Their work has also appeared in publications ranging from New York magazine to Vanity Fair, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, W magazine, and Glamour.Heather and Jessica talked to host Ted Fox about their new book and how they work together as a writing team as well as what makes for successful characters and the challenges of writing a sequel. The three made some time at the end to discuss the do’s and don’ts of covering celebrity fashion, too.As for where they started, Ted had the opportunity to see just how well Heather and Jessica know each other’s writing.LINKSHeather and Jessica’s two royal novels: The Royal We and The Heir AffairHeather and Jessica’s website: gofugyourself.comEpisode Transcript

Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan have been writing together since they founded their witty celebrity fashion blog, Go Fug Yourself, back in 2004 as a way to procrastinate from their day jobs. Today, not only are the “Fug Girls” pioneers in the space, but they’ve also received rave reviews as novelists with the best-selling The Royal We—loosely based on the courtship of Prince WIlliam and Kate Middleton—and the highly anticipated sequel, The Heir Affair, which just hit bookshelves on July 7. But before they were writing novels, the ladies were working as TV series recappers, writing about shows such as Judging Amy and Making the Band, before parlaying that experience into working in the world of reality TV. Hear how the pair pivoted from digital to print and ultimately found their stride in balancing the two on today’s episode of Second Life.
On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, we promised you the second round of World of Dance duels, but it turns out they're airing tonight, July 14, so we'll discuss them next week. Instead, we talked about The Heir Affair, a sequel to The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan of Go Fug Yourself (which we discussed in 2017). The new book is a delightful continuation of the stories and characters we'd so enjoyed in round 1. Recommended! We can't really recommend the episode of Veronica Mars we watched, titled "Green-Eyed Monster" and guest-starring Laura Bell Bundy as a truly annoying client of Mars Investigations. She hired Veronica to investigate her fiance, but he's the one who dodged a bullet. Next: Season 2 episode 5, "Blast from the Past."
Guys we're doing minisodes now and we are rating books and documentaries and tv shows and any other stuff about Royals. This episode is all about a beaut new novel about a fictional British Royal family drama (including an American) the book is titled The Heir Affair written by the Go Fug Yourself girls Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. Have a listen to find out what we reckon.
It’s possible you’ve been consuming content by Kim France for thirty-ish years, and we’re here to talk about all of it (including her new podcast—which, have you listened?!). Also, not to be the people who talk about our meditation experiences, but we kind of can’t shut up about this one time, ok? The linkage: Hit up the Sky Ting yoga classes taught by Marisa Meltzer (in NYC) that we loved. Check out Kim France’s podcast, which she co-hosts with Tally Abecassis, called Everything Is Fine and her fashion ‘n shopping blog Girls of a Certain Age. Both are ideal for women over 40 and the over-40-curious. How Sassy Changed My Live, which the very same Marisa Meltzer co-authored with Kara Jesella, is itself iconic at this point. Kim goes deep on her creative partnership with Andrea Linett while running Lucky in our book Work Wife. For a preview of the book Kim is writing, read her Medium essays about the beautiful house that didn’t make for a beautiful life and depression at the Condé Nast holiday lunch. Oh, and read her essays on vanity and dressing your age for The Cut while you’re at it. Speaking of editors in chief, Dan Peres (of Details) just released As Needed for Pain, and this NYT story about that whole late-nineties/early-aughts magazine era is pretty juicy. Kim shops The RealReal (join the club!), Warm, and Maria Cornejo. Shout out to the magazine Gossamer, which is for people who also smoke weed. Two friends we lost much too soon: David Rakoff and Jason Polan. Bring on that menopause content. See: Darcy Steinke’s book Flash Count Diary, Party Girl, this Broad City scene, and this Fleabag one. You wanna talk about beauty stuff? Excellent! Kim is very into Drunk Elephant, SK-II Pitera Facial Treatment Masks, Tatcha The Silk Canvas Protective Primer, and Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. For a red lip, she’s all about Kosas in Royal, Lipstick Queen, and those Nars Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencils. Kim’s watching Cheer, Fleabag, Killing Eve, The Crown, Victoria and reading Why We Can’t Sleep by Ada Calhoun, Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret, and (as always) Go Fug Yourself. Produced by Dear Media
The Crown has returned for Season 3 with new actors in all the key roles, and who better to talk about it than semi-professional royal watchers Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan of Go Fug Yourself? This week: Constance Wu's outburst after 'Fresh Off The Boat' was renewed last week, and her iNotes written 'apology', wound up doubling down on what people took issue with in the first place -- but is this a mistake she can recover from? Then we talk with Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, otherwise known as GO FUG YOURSELF!! Olivia Munn is very thin-skinned. She goes after the Go Fug Yourself fashion ladies. You can order food to be brought to your gate at MSP. It's DNA Day. A dumb gender-reveal idea. Is Lori Loughlin just not very smart? Top songs of the 90's.

Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan are self-proclaimed “authors, bloggers, and fashion assassins.” Creators of so many people's favorite celebrity fashion blog, Go Fug Yourself, and authors of bestsellers like the fortune-telling The Royal We (about an American who falls in love with and marries a British prince), Heather and Jessica share with us their collaborative process, their intentions to make the blog communal and someplace people want to come. “You always want the site, as your baby, to be something you're proud to share with people.” For links to some of the things we talk about: http://bedrosian.usc.edu/lahashtags/
This week, I got to sit down with Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks, the writers behind Go Fug Yourself and one of my favorite books The Royal We, for Raise Your Hand Say Yes. In this episode, we go behind the scenes of what it's really like to run a super glam celebrity fashion website and write an amazing novel. (Hint: there's a lot of hard work involved. And diet cokes! And compression socks!) (Hint #2: Laughter helps a lot.) You'll hear how Heather and Jessica have evolved their voices on Go Fug Yourself through the years, how they got The Royal We written collaboratively, what they learned from the earlier books they wrote, and their tips for anyone who's feeling shy about putting their work out into the world. And, of course, we talk about Hamilton. Heather and Jessica, thank you so much for making the time to share your stories!! Pour a strong drink and leave your denim culottes at home for this conversation with Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, who together make up blogging and writing duo the Fug Girls (of Go Fug Yourself)! We talk about how terrible the new X Files is going to be, hear behind the scenes stories about America’s Next Top Model, talk writing as a team, and ask the universe for an oral history of how Summer '07 was the best time Hollywood gossip ever. Fug Girls Show Notes Pamela Ribon Television Without Pity (previously Mighty Big TV) Tough Enough (MTV show) Judging Amy BrilliantButCancelled.com Wolf Lake (TV show) Linda Holmes, NPR's pop culture reporter Richard Glatzer (director, Still Alice) Morgan Spurlock Sleepover (movie) Brooks Barnes (formerly WSJ, New York Times) The Royals (TV show) Fug Girls articles on The Toast
Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan joined the gang this week to take a closer look at Project Runway as it returns for a fourteenth season. Liv trolled us in her Face Off report, Tara recharged the amethysts Under The Dome with rage, and we went around the dial with Jon Stewart, Cait Jenner, Becoming Us, Nic Pizzicato Five, the resurgence of Big Brother, and the lies Saturday-morning ads tell -- before Heather wigged us out with a Melrose Place Canon submission. We declared a winner and loser, then scaled a traditional Egyptian burial structure for 25 Dave points in this week's Game Time. Work wives, dead wives, crying and cutting: we've got it all (plus a ton of TV Republicans for some reason?) on an all-new Extra Hot Great.Special Guests: Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. The Blaze with Lizzie and Kat! The Original Beverly Hills 90210 Podcast
The women behind the amazing fashion blog Go Fug Yourself, and authors of the recent hit novel The Royal We, the Fug Girls themselves Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan are on The Blaze with Lizzie and Kat podcast this week! The four of us discovered that we're all basically identical spirits, and we break into one of the most emotionally tortured Dylan McKay episodes of the series. Special thanks to Shaun of the No, Totally! podcast. You can listen to Kat's guest appearance on his show here, and you can continue listening to our Beverly Hills Beach Club Summer of ‘91 Spotify playlist here! What we were drinking: Princesa Cava BrutWhat we were eating: orange cool whip pie
Go Fug Yourself co-founder/co-editor Jessica Morgan makes her EHG debut as we discuss the imminent decommissioning of SOAPnet, and what we'll miss about it most. We take a moment to touch on NBC's live The Sound Of Music, and the new season of Best Ink on Oxygen, before Jessica presents Beverly Hills, 90210's "The Next 50 Years" for submission into The Canon. We click Around The Dial and name the week's winner and loser before getting to Game Time (though...not without some problems). GUESTS
