We Have Notes is a new podcast from writer Abby Gardner—a self-described Gen Xer with serious millennial and Gen Z pop culture tendencies. She, and some equally passionate guests, discuss their current obsessions and what you need to know to keep up with
Abby's solo this week with notes on THAT episode of Succession (spoilers included!), Taylor Swift + Joe Alwyn's breakup and its ripple effect through SwifTok, Tom Sandoval's disastrous + perplexing appearance on Howie Mandel's podcast, Amazon's The Power, Netflix's Beef, Showtime's Yellowjackets, Ben Affleck's Air + the ‘80s of it all, and more.Subscribe to WHN on Substack: https://wehavenotes.substack.com
Abby has notes on the VPR reunion looks, the new boygenius album, some podcast recommendations, and a few other tidbits before she's joined by writer Kerensa Cadenas to talk lots of fun TV stuff. They get into the most recent season of You—including how they'd like to see it wrap up and Kerensa's recent profile of Penn Badgley for British GQ, Succession, Vanderpump Rules, and lots more.Subscribe to WHN on Substack: https://wehavenotes.substack.com Follow Kerensa: https://twitter.com/kerensacadenas + https://www.instagram.com/kerensacadenas Kerensa's GQ piece on Penn: https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/penn-badgley-interview-2023
Abby and her dear friend Maura Brannigan take a deep dive into the world of Daisy Jones & the Six—the book, the Amazon series, and the album, Aurora. Yes, there are spoilers. And also many a sidebar on such related topics as Taylor Swift, Evermore, Fleetwood Mac, songwriting, slut eras, their own musical dreams, the beautiful complexity of female friendship, and much more. And, of course, Abby has a statement on *that* video from Tokyo.Subscribe to We Have Notes: https://wehavenotes.substack.com/erasspecial
Abby's obviously got some notes on the latest from Vanderpump land and the beginning of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. Then she's joined by her friend Amy Rowell (for the fourth time!!!) to talk about so very many things: more erotic thrillers from our youth, Nancy Drew + the Hardy Boys, Rob Lowe's sex tape scandal, TikTok hilarity, Chelsea Handler + the joys of living a single, child-free life, the toxic relationships of Tell Me Lies + much more.
This week Abby is joined by two of her most devoted Bravo friends—New York magazine's Alyssa Shelasky and writer/producer Lauren Brown West-Rosenthal—to discuss the biggest pop culture story of 2022 so far: Scandoval. Even if you don't watch Vanderpump Rules, you have likely been touched by the news that Tom cheated on Ariana with Raquel/Rachel and this episode gets into ALL OF IT. From why this took over the culture, if the cheaters have a way back, the reasons Ariana is the coolest and so beloved in the Bravo fandom, the legend that is Lala Kent, some tough rounds of F/M/K, and more twists + turns than, well, a Bravo narrative.Subscribe to We Have Notes: https://wehavenotes.substack.comFollow Alyssa: @alyssashelaskyFollow Lauren: @laurenwestro
Of course there are notes to be noted about the SCANDOVAL, aka the Tom/Raquel/Ariana cheating news from the land of Vanderpump, and one of the most important stories of our time. (Don't worry, dedicated Daisy Jones content is forthcoming…but breaking news is breaking news!) Then Abby is joined by her old friend, writer Maggie Bullock, to talk J. Crew and her new book The Kingdom of Prep. They get into the ‘90s impact, the woman behind the scenes back then that you probably never knew about, the fashion reset that was the Linda Evangelista/Arthur Elgort cover, the explosion of the cult of Jenna Lyons and the Mickey/Jenna/Obama era of the brand, why Jenna might have decided to join RHONY, and so much more.Subscribe to Maggie's Substack, The Spread: https://www.thespread.mediaThe latest from the WHN Substack:https://wehavenotes.substack.com/p/vanderpump-rules-tom-ariana-raquel-affairhttps://wehavenotes.substack.com/p/25-scandoval-questions-i-need-answered
Abby's got a couple recommendations—Sharper on AppleTV+ and the new season of Outer Banks on Netflix—and another mini rant about Aidan and Carrie (UGH!) Then she's joined by her friend Courtney Dunlop for a journey back in time to the erotic thrillers of yore like Fatal Attraction (which isn't technically ‘90s, but still), Basic Instinct, Sliver, Single White Female, A Perfect Murder, and more. The gorgeous clothes, the tech (LOL), the tropes, the real estate porn, the way we thought that's what our offices were going to look like, the Michael Douglas of it all, that famous Barneys bag…and, of course, the steamy sex scenes.
Abby's got notes on the new trailer for Daisy Jones & the Six, Harry at the Brits, Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence, and the latest eps of You, Poker Face, and 911: Lone Star. Then she's joined by her friend Wynter Mitchell-Rohrbaugh to chat about Rihanna's Super Bowl halftime show and the new Pamela Anderson documentary on Netflix. Spoiler alert: They're very into both.Subscribe to We Have Notes: https://wehavenotes.substack.comFollow Wynter on Twitter: https://twitter.com/wyntermitchell
Of course Abby has some thoughts on what went down at the Grammys on Sunday, plus a new bad/good narrative fiction pod recommendation for you. Then she's joined by one of oldest friends, Amanda Haury, to talk You People on Netflix, The Last of Us on HBO, their childhood dreams of appearing on the The Bozo Show's Grand Prize Game and Double Dare, their high school's most famous (and infamous) alumni, late ‘80s R&B, OG Nintendo games, and much more.
Abby's reporting from the last few shows of Love on Tour with Harry Styles (duh!) in California, coupled with the news of Beyoncé's Renaissance tour. Translation: There's a LOT going on. Then she's joined by WHN's first mother/daughter duo—her dear friend/return guest Alexis DiResta and her amazing 7th grade daughter Violet—to talk about revisiting the shows and magazines of OUR youth…with an ACTUAL youth + much more from a cool Gen Z perspective.
There was too much good stuff to edit down, so here's a continuation of Abby's conversation with her friend Bonnie Morrison where they get into Prince Harry, Spare, the timing of telling one's story, the Anderson Cooper interview, the royal fairytale + our own role in perpetuating it, and more.
Abby's back in LA for some shows with the British man—and some notes on Daisy Jones and the Six, Kaia Gerber, and Apple Martin's fashion debut. Then she's joined by her good friend Bonnie Morrison to talk about their obsession with terrible romance fiction podcasts, Austin Butler's accent, storytelling for women in their 40s, the MTV of our youth, the uniqueness of Gen X's perspective, and so much more that there's even a part two coming soon.Bonnie on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fiercegrandma/
Abby's got notes on the premiere ep of The Last of Us on HBO, the silly fun of The Traitors on Peacock, and the riveting novel Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka. Then she's joined by her friend Amber Katz to discuss S2 of the Netflix show Ginny & Georgia, which is somehow a mix of Gilmore Girls, My So-Called Life, Mermaids, Hart of Dixie, and Dexter?!? They also get into the new Bernie Madoff docuseries on Netflix, some initial thoughts on Prince Harry's Spare, and more.Subscribe to the newsletter: https://wehavenotes.substack.comAnd Amber's Things I Buy as a Civilian: https://amber.substack.com
Abby gets into the reactions to Taylor Swift, director, (also happy birthday blondie!), the return of the Golden Globes, this season of White Lotus and Meghann Fahy's rising star, The Menu, Fleishman Is In Trouble, Riches, and more fun ramblings.
Abby's got notes on Firefly Lane, My Unorthodox Life, and the premiere date for Daisy Jones & the Six. Then she's joined by her friends Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan of Go Fug Yourself to dive into their shared lifetime love of soap operas and melodrama in general. In what they've now decided will be the first of a series (complete with a cliffhanger!), they get into the ways ‘80s and ‘90s daytime and nighttime soaps shaped the culture—and their minds. Think Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, All My Children, One Life to Live, Dallas, Dynasty, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and more.
You know Abby has some notes about how that Taylor Swift pre-sale went down on Ticketmaster this week. Spoiler Alert: It was traumatic and messy AF. Ticketmaster must be defeated and maybe Swifities and AOC can band together and do it. Plus: the new season of Grey's Anatomy, The Crown, From Scratch, EmRata + Pete Davidson, the Jerry Falwell Jr doc God Forbid on Hulu, the great John Aniston as Victor Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives, and more.Subscribe to the We Have Notes newsletterhttps://wehavenotes.substack.com Follow Abby Gardnerhttps://www.instagram.com/abbycgardner/ https://twitter.com/abbygardner Follow We Have Noteshttps://www.instagram.com/wehavenotes https://www.tiktok.com/@wehavenotes https://speakstudiopodcasting.com/wehavenotes Podcast powered and distributed by Speak.Studio
Abby survived Harryween and lived to tell about the glorious night that featured Harry as Danny Zuko singing Olivia Newton-John's “Hopelessly Devoted to You”. Then she's joined by her friend Jamie Rosen to talk about lots of fun stuff including the intersection of beauty and pop culture, Gwyneth Paltrow, House of the Dragon, their shared passion for movie trailers, and much more.
Abby and fellow Swiftie Elana Fishman, the editor of Page Six Style, go deep on every single track of Taylor Swift's new album ‘Midnights'—including the 3 AM bonus songs that were indeed a “chaotic surprise”. It's a long one, who is more deserving than Taylor Alison Swift? Spoiler alert: They love it. Abby's got notes on the latest goings-on with Taylor Swift ahead of the release of Midnights, witchy movies to watch that are NOT Hocus Pocus, the movies that haunt her (but in a good scary way), Netflix's The Watcher, Selena and Hailey Biebs, and more. The Haunting of a Dream Househttps://www.thecut.com/article/the-haunting-of-657-boulevard-in-westfield-new-jersey.html Subscribe to the We Have Notes newsletterhttps://wehavenotes.substack.com Follow Abby Gardnerhttps://www.instagram.com/abbycgardner/ https://twitter.com/abbygardner Follow We Have Noteshttps://www.instagram.com/wehavenotes https://www.tiktok.com/@wehavenotes https://speakstudiopodcasting.com/wehavenotes Podcast powered and distributed by Speak.Studio
This week the WHN sports trio is back! They're talking football + why it's hard to be a fan sometimes, sports tears (and fights and, um, arrests), Friday Night Lights and other sports-adjacent shows (Does One Tree Hill count? Abby says yes!), John Tesh, Tom and Gisele, and so much more. Plus, Amy has a special statement to read regarding her last appearance on the show and what it did to the Kentucky basketball program.
Abby's got notes on the new season of The Kardashians, Survivor, 9-1-1, the latest on Taylor Swift's Midnights, and whatever the hell The Try Guys are. Then she's joined by her good friend Rachel Nichols (the actress, not the sports journalist!) to talk everything from cooking shows and comedy fests to cute dads, big trucks, a peek inside the life of an actress, and what it's like when your name twin gets into some trouble on the interwebs. So, basically a journey inside one of their wine-soaked FaceTime chats.
A lil mini up from Abby (who of COURSE stayed in New York for the British man's final show at MSG) where she brain dumps on Adam Levine, Taylor's latest Midnights news, Princess Charlotte's superior standing in the royal family, a new song from Stevie Nicks, Leo + Gigi, the 30th anniversary of Singles, and more.
We are BACK, babiesssss!!! Abby's actually coming to you live from NYC where she's doing her own mini-residency alongside a certain musical British Fruit Witch who loves sparkly outfits and high kicks. She's running down some of the latest stories before going deep on one of the great NY films, The Muppets Take Manhattan, with fellow Muppet superfan/dear friend/return guest, Alexis DiResta.Don't forget to subscribe to the (free!) the We Have Notes Substack which comes out on Fridays here: https://wehavenotes.substack.com
Abby's back this week (then off for a few, European-summer style) with notes on the glorious union of Ben + Jen at long last, Harry's new video for Late Night Talking, and that college class about him that she, frankly, finds lacking and unimpressive. Plus, Real Housewives, First Kill, Boo Bitch, the DB Cooper docuseries on Netflix, and that HBO Max one, The Anarchists.Subscribe to the We Have Notes newsletterhttps://wehavenotes.substack.com Follow Abby Gardnerhttps://www.instagram.com/abbycgardner/ https://twitter.com/abbygardner Follow We Have Noteshttps://www.instagram.com/wehavenotes https://www.tiktok.com/@wehavenotes https://speakstudiopodcasting.com/wehavenotes Podcast powered and distributed by Speak.Studio
Abby has a few notes on the awfulness that is the Roe decision. Then she's joined by her friend Alexander Mae, of Rodeo Break and the new Talk Rodeo podcast, aka a millennial lil sister in all things pop culture and beyond. They get into so very many things: One Direction, Hailey Bieber's new skincare line Rhode, Kim Kardashian's SKKN, why we love the Kardashians but can acknowledge when they are problematic, some notes for Kravis, a detour into breast reduction surgery, Pete Davidson, Gwyneth + GOOP + Apple Martin, the utter cool of Dakota Johnson, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Taylor, Jonah Hill + Seth Rogen, wedding season, and cats...the animal not the musical. Why yes, Abby did indeed survive two nights of Harry Styles at Wembley. She's sharing all the manic fangirl details and some other London recommendations. “As It Was”, the first single from the new Harry Styles album Harry's House, has finally arrived. It's a melancholic bop, a sad banger if you will…quite possibly Abby's favorite kind of song. Upbeat melodies + angsty lyrics are simply the best. She's got some immediate reactions and vaguely coherent notes on this piece of brilliance that feels at once extremely new *and* very familiar with its ‘80s synth-pop Depeche Mode and A-ha vibes. The video is stunning and the song keeps getting better with every listen. Abby's solo this week for episode 47 (IYKYK) with some notes on Oscars fashion and the moments she's still thinking about that have absolutely nothing to do with Will Smith, the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters and how hard it's hitting Gen X, Bridgerton, WeCrashed, The Dropout, the new Hillsong documentary, and the current, gloriously chaotic, season of Summer House. March Madness is upon us! Rejoice! Abby has a few things to discuss at the top of show like the glorious collaboration between Manolo Blahnik + Birkenstock, the impact of William Hurt's movies on Gen X, and the best alternative to the nonsense that is Deux Moi. Then it's WHN (but make it sports) with returning guests Sarah Jenks-Daly and Amy Rowell. The ladies are getting into college hoops, weird sports superstitions and behaviors, the pain that comes with fandom, WTF is going on with Tom Brady, sports movies (ahem, American Anthem!), and so much more—all with a very fun spin, whether you're typically a sports person or not. Abby's got a few quick notes on Rihanna, Wordle (and Taylordle), current obsession Joe Burrow, and the Janet Jackson documentary before diving into a wide-ranging conversation with the amazing writer/actor/producer Robinne Lee—whose delicious novel, The Idea of You, is basically WHN canon. They talk about the book (and how she feels about a sequel), boy bands, fandom, Leo, Titanic, the appeal of angst-y stories, the writing process + so much more goodness. And, of course, Harry Styles and One Direction.
