Gospel Order For God's Means Of Grace - Pastor Mitchell Moore - 10/15/23i by First Presbyterian Church San Antonio
Second Sunday in Lent | John 3:1-17 | March 5, 2023 | Rob Hamilton, preaching "Ultimately, at the end of the day, as we go through Lent, that is the journey that we must be about, asking the questions about where is God in this moment, how we understand God, and how do we practice that faith in a wider community. Ultimately, as we develop that discipline, we can come to see Christ more clearly in our lives. And that's what I hope for each one of us now, and for all the days coming forward." Romans 1:16-25 English Standard Version (ESV)The Righteous Shall Live by Faith16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”God's Wrath on Unrighteousness18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Guest Speaker Jared Berry speaks on the Gospel Mission as it relates to the Gospel Order and our identity in it.
To Know and Be Known! (Matthew 16:13-17) 1. How did we come to know God? 2. How do we know God knows us? Scriptures used: [1Co 13:12 NASB] God's relational knowledge: [Gen 18:19 NASB] [Exo 33:12-13 NASB] 12 Then Moses said to the LORD, "See, You say to me, 'Bring up this people!' But You Yourself have not let me know whom You will send with me. Moreover, You have said, 'I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.' 13 "Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. Consider too, that this nation is Your people." [2Sa 7:20 NASB] [Psa 139:1-7 NASB] [Jeremiah 1:5 NASB] [Amos 3:2 NASB] Eternal Implications: [Mat 7:22-23 NASB] 22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’ [Jhn 5:39-42 NASB] This week… To Know God: [Mat 16:13-17 NASB] 13 Now, when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" 14 And they said, "Some [say] John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets." 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17 And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona because flesh and blood did not reveal [this] to you, but My Father who is in heaven. We came to know God through the revelation of the Gospel… Order of Salvation: [Eph 1:13-14 NASB] 13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of [God's own] possession, to the praise of His glory. [Rom 1:16 NASB] [Eph 2:8-9 NASB] [Rom 4:5, 16 NASB] [Rom 10:17 NASB] Conclusion: We came to know God through the revelation of the Gospel. Although proclaimed through flesh and blood, this revelation was from the Father. This is why the great commission is so important. This is why Romans 10:4 speaks of the blessedness of the person who brings this good news. This is also why the Scriptures teach us that we’ve been given the ministry of reconciliation. [2Co 5:17-21 NASB]
In our first episode, we'll hear from Dr. Michael Goode an assistant professor of early American history at Utah Valley University. Michael is no stranger to the Library Company: in fact, his book project, “A Colonizing Peace: The Quaker Struggle for Gospel Order in Early America,” emerged during his time here as a Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellow. In a new co-edited volume published by Brill, The Specter of Peace: Rethinking Violence and Power in the Colonial Atlantic (Brill, 2018), Michael offers a window into his thinking about the role of peace-making in colonial America. Here's a link to the digital copy of the map we discuss at the top of the episode: https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3300.ct000232/?r=-1.049,-0.05,3.099,1.766,0
God has given us the ability to create children so as to learn more about His character and about our own character. In that learning process there are specific responsibilities that God has required of parents. How we live as Christian parents and raise our children is how we will associate with members in the church. This is a part of true Gospel Order that God requires for families and the church.
True church unity and organization, biblically speaking, starts at home. It started at Creation as God ordered everything according to His will, which is perfect order. God, not the author of confusion, demonstrated Gospel Order in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve.
Spiritual order is the foundation of Gospel Order. As we learn more and more of Christ we will be taught more and more of the divine characteristics of true order… as individuals first, which will ripple into our family life and all through the church. This well ordered life will be seen by others and be a testament to Jesus working in you.
What is Gospel Order? It is proper order and system established for the conduct of all affairs pertaining to the spiritual welfare of the believers in God! Where do we find this system delineated? In God's Word! Who is at the heart of this order? Let's see what the Word of God says...
Now that we understand what elements God wants in a worship service, we need to think about when He wants us to do each of them. A good Reformed liturgy gives careful thought to the order of the elements in a worship service. http://media.urclearning.org/audio/SS-Ten_Commandments_15.mp3
