PECO does more than just keep your lights on - they're marking 20 years of their Green Region Open Space Program, which has provided over $2.5 million in grants to preserve, protect, and expand green spaces throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. Spaces like gardens and parks are vital for our physical and mental health, but they can be hard to find in the city, especially in disinvested neighborhoods. We hear how PECO has partnered with Natural Lands and Neighborhood Gardens Trust to make nature more accessible to everyone. Then, on Shara in the City, we visit Fireman's Hall Museum in Old City. The renovated 1898 firehouse is a treasure trove of Philadelphia fire history and home to the first exhibit commemorating the firefighters who died on 9/11. SSE Airtricity has launched a €5 million all-island Community Fund today, with the aim of delivering meaningful community benefits across the island of Ireland. The company plans to undertake a ten week consultation process, which opens today, and which will continue until 26 July, inviting views from communities, individuals and organisations from towns, villages, inner cities, and rural heartlands, to advise how the fund could best support green initiatives throughout our communities. The SSE Airtricity Generation Green Community fund is part of SSE Airtricity's commitment to customers and the communities it serves by supporting them on the path to net zero through education, awareness raising, as well as grant funding and energy efficiency supports. The fund aims to support communities in reaching net zero by delivering a positive and lasting social impact. Heather Humphreys T.D., Minister for Social Protection and Minister for Rural and Community Development, said: "I am delighted that SSE Airtricity has officially launched its €5 million Green Generation Community Fund. This is a transformative level of funding that will make a real and lasting difference in rural and urban communities. It's pleasing to see SSE Airtricity acknowledge the integral role that local communities the length and breadth of Ireland will play in the transition to Net Zero through the launch of its community fund and consultation process today. "This new fund will support local communities across Ireland with biodiversity, education, and decarbonisation projects, along with enhancing services and amenities in rural and urban areas. I would encourage local communities and organisations to positively engage with SSE Airtricity and its Green Generation Community Fund during the consultation phase." Klair Neenan, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity, said: "Getting to net zero is in everyone's interest and local communities will be at the heart of the energy transition. We know there are passionate people and groups working hard across Ireland and we want to help them make a positive difference by powering up their sustainability plans. But funding can often be an issue. That's why we're delighted to launch our unique Generation Green Community Fund. "We know issues like biodiversity, education and decarbonisation are big priorities but to ensure the funding makes the biggest difference we want to hear from local communities directly. That's why we're launching this initial consultation, and we look forward to hearing from communities and individuals, to inform how the fund should be used." As part of the consultation process, SSE Airtricity is inviting local communities and individuals to shape what the priorities for the fund should be. This will ensure the fund focuses on what is most important to communities. Examples of priorities may include green energy upgrades for community buildings, community biodiversity projects or green skills workshops and education. The SSE Airtricity Generation Green Community Fund will be administered in line with a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals, aligning with SSE Airtricity's core sustainability priorities around community, biodiversity, education and decarbonisation. The company has a long-standing commitment of supporting its customers and community groups. In response to the global energy crisis in 2022 and 2023, SSE Airtricity established a €25 million customer support fund to help its customers deal with the impacts of inflation. The SSE Airtricity Generation Green Community Fund will be open to application later this year, following the initial consultation period. To submit your views to the consultation or for more information, please visit www.sseairtricity.com/communityfund.

This session of the radio show shares the output of The Climate Minute podcast episode hosted by Ted McIntyre, Franklin resident and climate activist, where he and I talked with Town Councilor Cobi Frongillo. We met to record via the Zoom conference bridge on Thursday, December 28, 2023. The key topic for this session is Cobi's advocacy for Franklin to be part of the Climate Leader Community program established by the State of MA. Our conversation covers the six criteria for this program:Be a Green Community in good standing Have a local body (sustainability committee, energy committee, etc.) that advises the municipality on clean energy/climate initiatives Commit to eliminate on-site fossil fuel use by 2050 (municipal buildings/operations) Create a municipal decarbonization roadmap Adopt a Zero-Emission Vehicle first policy Adopt the Specialized Opt-In building codeThis discussion continues our journey understanding the MA roadmap toward net zero and while it helps me “make sense of climate”, we hope it helps with your understanding as well. If you have climate questions or Franklin specific climate questions, send them in and we'll try to answer them in a future session. The conversation runs about 53 minutes. A former teacher at Cherokee Charter Academy and her husband were recently arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on charges of sexual exploitation of children, the GBI announced. On December 29, William Sandridge, 42, and Allyn Sandridge of Gordon County, were arrested and each charged with eight counts of sexual exploitation of children by the GBI's Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit. Allyn Sandridge was formerly a teacher at Cherokee Charter Academy near Holly Springs. According to the GBI, the agency's CEACC Unit and Homeland Security Investigations began a joint investigation into the Sandridges' online activity after receiving a report in reference to their online activity. This investigation led to a search warrant of the Sandridges' home and their subsequent arrests. The Sandridges were taken to the Gordon County Jail upon their arrest. As of Thursday, they remained in custody, according to the jail's website. A spokesperson for the charter school said that Allyn Sandridge is no longer an employee there, but declined to comment further. The Office of Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration has been honored by the Georgia Secretary of State's office with the 2023 Foundation Builders Award. This is the very first year that this award has been given out. The Office of Cherokee County Election and Voter Registration received the award in front of 300 of their counterparts January 4 while attending the Georgia Registered Voter Information System conference in Athens. For more information on Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration, visit cherokeegavotes.com Georgia's second straight CFP National Championship win, a 65-7 victory over TCU, brought plenty of excitement to the residents of Cherokee County, many of which made the trip to SoFi Stadium to see the action in person. The Bulldogs became the first team to repeat as national champions since the College Football Playoff era began in 2014. Cherokee County District Attorney Shannon Wallace was among the area's residents to venture to Inglewood, California, for Monday night's title game. She went with her husband, Kyle, and enjoyed every minute. Kyle Wallace took in a moment of history as Georgia throttled TCU on college football's biggest stage. Two Woodstock residents and Georgia graduates, Bill and Alicia Bishop knew they had to see the Bulldogs play in their second straight title game, hoping to witness another special college football moment. They flew from Atlanta to Phoenix, and then drove another six hours to LA for the game. For Tom Sheehan, Monday's game was more than just a national championship. Sheehan's son, Drew, is a junior tight end for Georgia, so it was about seeing his son experience the pinnacle of college football. Drew played for Woodstock, coached by Brent Budde, and walked onto the Bulldogs' roster last season, and Tom said the last two years have been life-changing. The Bulldogs will be hosting a championship parade and celebration today in Athens, where certainly many more Cherokee Countians will make the trip to revel in the victory. The Atlanta Regional Commission has recognized Cherokee County as a certified silver level Green Community. In metro Atlanta, 16 other local governments comprised of 11 cities and five counties have received a Green Community distinction. At the silver level, Cherokee County has amassed more than 229 points by implementing changes that reduce the environmental impact of the county, according to ARC. Cherokee County was Energy Star Certified after renovations to county facilities, including the marshal's office and public works buildings. Officials also worked toward expediting solar permits for residential projects, permitting over 100 solar energy projects in the last four years. According to ARC, the county's fire training center has saved 150,000 gallons per week by reusing water during fire suppression training procedures. The practice has saved $3,000 a month. In addition, the county purchased three propane-fueled buses for the Cherokee Area Transportation System as part of a program exploring alternative fuel use.  A glass pulverizer purchased in 2021 for the Cherokee County Recycling Center has saved over $11,000 by using the repurposed material for infrastructure projects. Four points were the difference on Wednesday as the Reinhardt men's basketball team got back on track in the AAC. The Eagles outlasted Milligan 83-79, finishing a second straight win after knocking off Tennessee Wesleyan last Saturday. It's been a season of ups and downs for Reinhardt, but following the two straight wins, it moved to 8-6 in conference play and is one game away from the .500 mark for the season at 8-9 overall. Wednesday's game was a rare moment where the Eagles were outshot by Milligan but managed to still escape with the win. Reinhardt shot 42.2 percent overall compared to the opposition's 54.3 percent and 47.4 percent from behind the 3-point line. Milligan shot 63.6 percent in the second half yet only outscored Reinhardt 48-47. The Eagles' defense made a difference in the first half, finishing with an 8-4 advantage in steals while hauling in eight offensive rebounds to keep possessions alive. Four Reinhardt players finished Wednesday's win in double figures. Tafari Thomas led the way with 20 points while nearing a double-double with nine rebounds. Nate Louis was right behind him with 18 points, including a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line. Reinhardt will look to win a third straight game Saturday afternoon as it hits the road for Kentucky Christian. If the Eagles can beat the 4-14 Knights, they will even their overall record and move three games over .500 in AAC play. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners will hold special called meetings on January 19 and 20 for its annual planning retreat. What is the green home industry? If you'd like to learn more about it, find out how to connect with people within it, and get to know about all the new things coming out in it, you're in the right place because you will hear all of that today!  I'm Marla, the Green Home Coach, and I am excited to have Allison Friedman from Rate It Green with me today to talk about all the wonderful work she is doing! I love what Allison has built by tying her product, company, and service together!  Rate It Green Rate It Green is an open directory network for the green building industry or anyone interested in green building, from beginners to experts, including trade professionals, consumers, and advanced DIY-ers. They are both residential and commercial and have individual members, as well as organizational and company members. The aim is to get people together to shorten the learning curve by engaging, collaborating, sharing information online, and talking about their experiences building sustainable and healthier places to live. It's all connected People are finally beginning to understand that health, sustainability, and living better lives are all connected. It is a learning process, and we all need to know that we are not alone and can help each other. Where it all started for Allison It all started in 2006 when Allison decided to renovate her home. It did not start out as a green project, and she made several mistakes along the way. She learned that it is hard to renovate sustainably while learning on the job- particularly back when it was hard to find any information on sustainable building practices. A learning process  Renovating her home was a learning process for Allison. If she had known when she started the project what she now knows, she would not have done it. However, she hopes all she has done and is still doing make her the best steward for building green homes. The future Allison is optimistic about everyone living healthier and more sustainably in the future, but moving the needle has been more difficult than was predicted. Sharing information    Allison would like to make the experience of sharing information online more human. However, she still prefers to engage with people and share information in person whenever possible. Sharing her journey Allison would like to use her resource to share her journey with others. She would like to talk more about improving indoor air quality, reducing the energy load, having clean water, and the things we are unaware of that could endanger us or cause health problems. Health and energy assessments The Inflation Reduction Act requires energy audits and assessments for some rebates. Unfortunately, there are very few companies doing those assessments. Free energy audits are available in Massachusetts.  Tighter homes and indoor air quality People have been getting excited about energy efficiency over the last few decades. Many have been tightening up their homes and learning to make do using less energy. As a result, better indoor air quality management is necessary to avoid any health risks associated with air pollutants getting trapped inside tighter homes.  Advancing indoor air quality systems Advancing indoor air quality systems happens on a level above the regular kind of energy audit, and Allison is working toward finding that. Initial energy assessments For an initial assessment, find someone with either a BPI or a HERS certification. Many utilities also offer some type of energy assessment, but they tend to vary from municipality to municipality or state to state. You can also go to www.energystar.gov  and www.energy.gov to learn more and find resources. Content Rate It Green has five key types of content: Discussions Groups Articles News Open Events Calendar Feedback and member content Rate It Green is a member-driven community that depends on member content and questions to thrive.
